There were 4 of us arriving around 11:00 am for breakfast. The staff was very pleasant. The menu had a good variety, however, breakfast for me was very disappointing. I ordered the traditional breakfast, two eggs, bacon, toast and their breakfast potatoes. The bacon wasn't cooked it might have touched the grill, the potatoes were barely warm if that, the toast was bread not toasted. The eggs were perfect and if they had been at least warm they would have been the best part to the breakfast. I realize they were busy but I'm sorry cold and uncooked food isn't what I consider good. read more

We arrived at Chef's Hat after exploring the northern part of Door County and found a quiet and comfortable dining experience. No crowds, no waiting and no fuss. In the summer there is a choice of indoor or outdoor seating and since it was a beautiful day, we sat outside with a view of the harbor. My wife started with sangria and I had a cherry lime ice tea. Both were delicious. Lunch items included a variety of sandwiches, soups, and other entree items. Each of us and our friends found our orders to be good and satisfying. In a resort area like Ephraim, crowded and overpriced restaurants can be found in every corner but a comfortable and reasonably priced place like Chef's Hat is a true find. read more

Our "5-10 minute wait" was over half an hour when we left. Food looked ok coming out, but limited menu.

First time here in the years that it's been open. Plenty of outdoor seating. Indoor as well. We opted for indoor because we were on a schedule. Among the lowest food prep and delivery that we've ever experienced. Gorgonzola Mushroom Burger: Way tough (even though Waseda Meat), mushroom mix tasted canned mushrooms. I've never had a burger that was tough... Bun felt like it was sitting under the heat lamp for way too long. Meat WAY over seasoned. Quasadilla: wild rice cheese and asparagus... odd and at the most average. Server never checked back to ask how things were. Chalking this one up to maybe we just ordered wrong. May try it again, but many other options in Door County that created a much better first impression. read more

When people ask me, "what is the best meal you've ever had?" I tell them about my first meal at Chef's Hat. Sitting on the patio, surrounded by flowers, and looking out on the bay in Ephraim. Their tomato basil soup was the best soup I've ever tasted and it came out at the perfect temperature. Even the kettle chips were the best I've ever had. Then, i found the best apple pie with caramel, second only to my mom's recipe. I don't even like whipped cream, but now i can't imagine eating pie without it! Chef's Hat in Ephraim, WI is now my favorite restaurant on the peninsula. Cheap too. I've been going there once a year ever since, and the waitress still recognizes me! ADVICE: Get the half soup/sandwich meal, only about $13, and you get a dessert. Call ahead and check what their soup of the day is; they alternate between pumpkin and tomato basil (you want the tomato basil soup). Then ask for the apple pie with caramel. One of the better choices in Ephraim, but there's aren't many. Trixi's next door is good, but much more expensive. The choices at Chef's Hat are trendy, but the results don't always claim quality. I had Brisket chips (because that's what they were) over mashed potatoes with blackened (not sauteed as stated) green beans, mushrooms and red pepper slices, all covered with gravy. Very tasty comfort food, but kind of thrown together rather than presented as haute cuisine. $17. My wife had Door County Cherry and Walnut Salad with chicken for $16. The wait time for peculiar reasons (the "breakfasters" came late and stayed long?) was over an hour (came at 11:30 and were served at 12:30). I love having breakfast here. The outdoor seating with the view of Eagle Harbor is terrific on a sunny day. I'm a big fan of the meat lover's scrambler, and the scones are a delicious and unique side that shouldn't be passed up (though they were a little overbaked on my last visit). There aren't a ton of tables, so would not recommend this space for large groups. Kayla, our server, was very polite and friendly. My only complaint has nothing to do with the food or service: Ephraim is one giant dead zone when it comes to mobile connectivity. Businesses like the Chef's Hat would be doing their customers a favor by providing free guest wifi. read more

My wife and I found this hidden gem a few years ago and it is now our favorite 'go-to' for any meal when we're in Door County. The environment, the service, the food - all EXCELLENT!! I came here for dinner by myself while I was on a solo biking trip in Door County a couple weeks ago. There were many delicious-looking things on the menu, but because of my dietary restrictions, I couldn't order what I really wanted. I got the Door County cherry & walnut salad (because when in Door County) and had them add the shrimp to give me a little protein, and when they say "herb shrimp," let me tell you, they mean "herb shrimp." These shrimp were over-herbed. Obnoxiously herbed. To me, herbs should be a flavor enhancer, not a dominator, and these herbed shrimp took it too far and terribly clashed with the salad and especially the dressing. I had to move them to the side and eat the salad as its own thing. I didn't finish the shrimp because they were just too much, which was a bummer because for a six-dollar upsell, I could have had another Oktoberfest. (They had a nice Oktoberfest on draft; I don't remember where it was from). The service was fine and the bartender who helped me choose a beer was very helpful and patient. I would go back, actually probably for breakfast since so many other Yelpers are praising breakfast, especially the asparagus scramble. read more

I have driven past this place for some time and received a gift certificate so I figured it was time to stop in and check it out. The service was fantastic. The food was great also. I did not get a picture, and I wish I would have, but we dug into it before I thought to get a picture. We had the sampler appetizer and everything was great. It is good to explore different types of food and most of these were new to my one sister and she loved everything. The stuffed peppadews are a must to try, so good. Everything else on the sampler plate was delicious also. I just wished they would have given some crackers or tortilla chips for the spinach & artichoke parmesan. The rosemary olive oil bread points was good, but I we only received 3 points and we had a lot of leftover dip. My one sister had the Asparagus Quesadilla and she said it was very good. It sure looked good and was pretty darn big too. My other sister and I each had the Big Ben. It was so good. We each ate half. I could have used more horseradish aioli on mine, but my sister requested hers on the side and shared with me. I changed my cheese from white sharp cheddar to the farmers cheese. Delish! The baguette was very good and fresh. This is a keeper on the list of places to stop. They also have outdoor seating if the weather permits, right across from the bay with an unobstructed view of the bay. read more

I want to preface this by saying that had we been sat somewhere else...the rating would have likely been a 5/5. .... this is possibly the best food that we have had during our long weekend here. Food was awesome. Service was over the top. Our server (long curly dark hair with glasses) was obviously busy and made the effort to check on us multiple times and make sure that we had everything that we needed. She also sat us because the hostess was otherwise occupied. HOWEVER, The entire experience was overshadowed by the disgusting wall covered with spiders less than a foot away from where we were eating. I highly recommend the food. I think they need to power wash and spray the siding of they are going to sit people next to ot. The entire breakfast had me looking over my shoulder. read more

SOLID! This place impressed me after a weekend of mediocre meals in northern Door County's off-season. I point out the off-season because I'm hoping there is better food to be had when more tourists visit the area. I hope so anyway. This restaurant, however, puts out great product in the off-season, too. Our group of 20 made a reservation a week in advance and converged for breakfast. There were a few egg scrambles that caught my eye, but I decided on the Matzke ($8.99), including bacon, ham, andouille sausage, bell peppers, onion, tomato, mushrooms, tossed with white sharp cheddar and homemade pesto - what you said! I know. That just sounds awesome, doesn't it? Well, it WAS! It came served with a side of red, diced pan fried breakfast potatoes, and my choice of toasted artisan bread or a fresh-baked scone. One of the toast options was rosemary and olive oil and scone flavors included white chocolate raspberry and apple cinnamon. So I did what any other human would do. I ordered the fresh baked white chocolate raspberry scone AND the rosemary and olive oil toasted artisan bread. Both were stellar. The scone stayed warm even after I inhaled my Matzke scramble. It was crisp and soft and I think I heard a harp playing when I bit into it. The service was on point and the manager pitched in and checked on us regularly. THIS is what I expect when I eat at an establishment in Door County, where there is plenty of competition for business. I would gladly go back to the Chef's Hat and I highly recommend you patronize them when you're in Door County. I challenge another Door County restaurant to serve me a better breakfast experience than I had at the Chef's Hat. read more

Wonderful little place to grab a bite to eat. The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Everything we had down to the toasted bread was great. Their homemade split pea soup was full of color and flavor alike. The turkey club had a nice thick amount of meat with a good ratio of aioli and bread. And the chips and salad were fresh and flavorful. (Also the raspberry vinaigrette was tasty too). Oh and their home made dutch apple pie was amazing. Chef's Hat used to be one of our favorite places, but the last two times we've been there, we feel the quality of the food has gone downhill. We just went for lunch and enjoyed the patio and had great service. But our food was below average. My husband ordered a roast beef sandwich which came on a gigantic piece of bread, and the beef appeared to be processed - an odd consistency. I had the pear gorgonzola turkey wrap which was ok, but I never did find the gorgonzola. I'd never order it again. The soup was excellent. There are just too many excellent restaurants in the area to return. read more

Firstly, our server was extremely rude, when I told her about my dietary restrictions and was about to ask if they can suggest something, she bluntly replied "no, I dont know what you can order then" The food doesn't taste good either.
