I'm adding in an update since it's been 4 years since my last review, but please also see my previous two reviews. The food here continues to be wonderful. On this visit we shared the chicken and goat cheese wontons as a starter and they were delicious. We also enjoyed the complimentary bread with chive butter; it was so good, we took the rest of the loaf home as we didn't want it to go to waste. I had the special for my entree which was a crab encrusted cod. It was delicious and came with asparagus, roasted tomatoes and fingering potatoes. This was a hearty entree! The cocktail list is always creative and I enjoyed the Kentucky lavender lemonade which was a bourbon based drink. The lavender was present without being overpowering. Service was excellent and our server knew the menu well. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed with indoor and outdoor patio seating. Popped in here for an early dinner and it was good that we were early... by six pm this place was getting packed on a winter Thursday night. Food was absolutely amazing. My three girlfriends and I visited Chives on a Saturday evening at 8PM in April (off-season in Door County), and even then, the place was incredibly busy--so definitely make a reservation in advance! First impressions: I loved the dark, moody ambiance. The black and brass décor gives it a chic, cozy vibe that feels both upscale and welcoming. We started with their complimentary bread and chive butter, and it was so good! The bread was warm, fluffy, and tasted freshly made. The chive butter it came with was a pleasant surprise. For dinner, I had the baked French onion soup and a mixed greens salad with grilled chicken and dressing on the side. The soup had great flavor, but it came out scalding hot. I had to wait over 15 minutes before I could really enjoy it, and I burnt my tongue and the roof of my mouth. By the time the soup cooled, my salad had already arrived. The salad was great- the greens were fresh, and the chicken was juicy and perfectly cooked. The only downside was the dressing was very acidic. I was glad I got it on the side. One of my friends ordered the same salad with the dressing mixed in and didn't like it as much. Overall, it was a nice place with good food and a buzzing, moody atmosphere. We were up in door county for our mini-moon so we had to check out Chives. The restaurant itself is so cute and cozy, but also upscale. Our server was very nice and helpful when we had questions. My mother-in-law and I booked Chive in Door County two weeks in advance, excited for a cozy dinner -- emphasis on cozy. Instead, we were seated outside at 7 PM... in 50° weather. One brave little heat lamp tried its best, but it was no match. Apparently, indoor seating must be requested ahead of time (wish we'd known!). My poor mother-in-law had to trek to the car for her jacket while I sat there in heels with no socks, sipping tea just to feel alive. Through the window, we watched everyone inside warm and glowing -- like a Hallmark movie we weren't invited to. The silver lining? The food was phenomenal. Made a return trip to Chive to experience the full impact of a great place. Place was busy and noisy for a Sunday night. We had a perfect table facing the street/water. Started with the Trio appetizer offering - crab cake, smoked salmon and two tiny cheese puffs with a great sauce. Servings were very small. Crab cake was the star. Decided to go with steaks by elimination. Just not drawn to other offerings. Both of us had the filet with fries and side salad. Steaks were cooked a perfect medium and fries were a real treat. Side salad had a light dressing and worked well with the rest of the meal. Steaks came with a flavor packed demi glaze. Protein portion was large. We LOVED this place and actually dined here twice during our quick weekend getaway. We strongly suggest making a reservation but the bar is always first come first served. This place has a dialed in menu. The scallops with butternut squash were perfect for the season. We also split a burger and mixed green salad. All of the entrees come with fresh sourdough (that's honestly perfect) and chive butter that is so addicting - you'll probably want to ask for more! Great beer and wine selection. The server we had was super friendly and answered all of the question that our party had about food and drinks and went to check a few things with the bartender even. Driving into door country in the evening is not easy - you have no service and not many food options! I'm glad we were able to discover chives and they were able to accommodate our large order ! We order several dishes like burgers, chicken, steak and scallops. The inside is sucker charming and fun to dine in. The only downside is it was freezing inside! We stayed in Bailey's Harbor and were looking for somewhere nice to eat on a Sunday night for our anniversary. Many of the restaurants we looked at online were either closed on Sundays or shut down due to the recent storms that swept through. So when we saw Chives had availability and was just down the street we figured "why not?" The reviews also looked great, so this seemed like a solid choice. Things started off well. The greeter at the door wished us a happy anniversary and there was very cute anniversary card waiting for us at the table that had been signed by all the servers. Such a nice touch! Our drinks were solid, but nothing to write home about. The complementary bread and garlic butter was delicious. Unfortunately, we waited almost an hour for our food after ordering, which was a little odd since the restaurant was only half full and we did not order anything particularly complicated (steak frites and french fried white fish). My partner said his steak was fine. Not the best steak he'd ever had, but not bad either. My white fish was... strange. Good quality fish and a nicely-sized portion. But the "french fried" part wound up just being egg? Imagine a piece of fish with an omelette cooked on top. No flour, no seasoning, literally just cooked soft egg. It didn't taste bad, but it was certainly not what I was expecting and not something I'd choose again. The potatoes and green beans served with it were also very undercooked, which was strange considering the long wait for the food to come out. Overall, I wouldn't say Chives is bad. You can tell the quality of the ingredients is good and the ambiance is nice too. But it was a very expensive, very meh meal. I probably would not return unless I couldn't get a reservation somewhere else. I will add that we did visit the Chives food truck and had very delicious cheese curds! Some of the best I've had, actually. And we watched some people getting some very scrumptious looking pizzas from the truck. We had a great experience at Chives! It was really busy at 7:30 on a Thursday, so we did have to wait in line for a little even though we had a reservation (but we did get there a couple minutes early). We were sat right away and all ordered different cocktails, which were full of all different flavors and well made. For appetizers we ordered the goat cheese and chicken wontons which were incredible! An order comes with five, so we got two orders so we could each have two since they're more bite sized. We also ordered the fries which were really tasty, but they do come with a lot of meals, so I'd recommend holding off on them as an app since we ended up have leftovers as sides. Lastly, we had complimentary bread and butter and the butter was the best butter I've ever had! It had chives and I think a hint of garlic, as well. For main courses we had some burgers and I had the beef cheeks, which were super good! The portion sizes were pretty good but not overwhelming. We also tried the chocolate mousse and eclair, and both were great. We did float it out that we were celebrating a birthday once or twice but I don't think our server heard, or there's a chance they don't do anything for birthdays. Honestly, this place is overhyped. We always come to Sister Bay with our dog, and Chives has a no-pet policy (even on the patio), so we waited a long time to try it. We did finally leave our dog behind and got a chance to dine in at Chives, and we were very excited to try it. My husband ordered the duck and I ordered the beef cheek. Both were underwhelming (the beef cheek was salty and unbalanced, the noodles dry; the duck was bland in general). Fries were fantastic, though - I'd come back for these. Drinks were strong and the wine selection was lacking, so not for us. The waitstaff is typical to the area - friendly but new to the business. There were a couple of old hands that I think would have provided a better experience overall, but service isn't why you come here, either. Server was awkward, brought food to wrong tables, food seemed to take awhile. Some really basic stuff like wiping bug splattered windows could be done. You walk into a great bar right away! FOOD - A+. Fine dining at its best without the pretentiousness. Everyone is so relaxed and genuinely friendly. My wife and I were looking to end our week long vacation in Door County with a good meal here. Unfortunately, this was the worst place we visited all week. The only thing I would come back for is the French onion soup, but I'm not going to a restaurant for just soup and tap water. We sat outside because it was a beautiful evening. The waitress claimed everything outside was cleaned everyday. Our table was covered in dust, and the worst part was the number of spiders crawling around us. I ordered a Negroni but was asked if I wanted their special, which was a boulevardier for some reason? Do they not know these are different (although similar) drinks? The Negroni was terrible. I only drank it to numb my senses. Steak and frites seem to be the showcase here, so that's what I tried. I went with a ribeye, medium, and opted for mashed potatoes instead of fries. The steak arrived well done with absolutely no pink in the middle, and nothing was seasoned. The cut of meat was thin and looked like they got it from the local Piggly Wiggly. My wife ordered the whitefish, which had some sort of breading, and she said it just tasted eggy. I tried to get the waitresses attention, but she didn't come to check on how things were going. Probably because she knew how bad it was by looking at it. While waiting for her to return, a spider fell from the ceiling into my food and crawled around a bit. After that, two more spiders crawled right past my wife. Is this the dining experience they wanted us to have? Clean your patio. It's not even this filthy in France. All we got was a "I'm sorry". They still got $100 out of us. Hope they enjoy it. We will not be back and I will never recommend this place to anyone. Up your game and be better. read more

This is for Chives Food Trucks -- not their indoor dining establishment. A group of us ate here last night. It was crowded, as expected, but the line moved quickly. Finding a spot to sit can be a bit tricky. They need just a few more tables. We enjoyed the music and ambiance. We ordered two fish sandwiches, poutine, and a cheese pizza. I'm not a fan of most fish, but the sandwich was terrific. It's two generous pieces of fish so the sandwich is filling. The cheese pizza had an herb sauce (pesto?) so no red sauce. This was also very good! We all split an order of poutine. I highly recommend NOT ordering these. The appetizer is described as "a bed of fries topped with pit beef, fresh cheese curds and horseradish sauce". The fries were on the bottom, topped by the cheese curds, which was topped with what looked and tasted like Parmesan cheese from a shaker can. Then on top was the "pit beef." This meat was chunks of overcooked and dry beef cubes. As frequent meat smokers and grilled, this was disappointing. We also noted that there was no horseradish sauce. We inquired to the cook, "is this supposed to have gravy?" To which he replied, "No, it doesn't come with a gravy." After looking at the menu again we said, "The description says it has a sauce." He said, "You asked if it had a gravy. A sauce is not a gravy." Then we asked if we could please have the "sauce" as it had not come with our item. He rolled his eyes and gave us a cup of a curdled horseradish something. We took a few bites hoping the "sauce" would make it better, but it didn't. With one bottle of root beer, one pizza, two fish sandwiches, and an order of poutine, our bill was about $70. No cocktails ordered and three of us drank water. An hour later, two of us (the two who ate the fish and poutine) were in two separate bathrooms for a few hours. If anyone else got sick after eating at Chives Food Trucks on 7/15/23, please let me know. A side note, the guy calling out the names on the megaphone and the young lady who took our order were really welcoming and kind! read more
