Monte Cristo

Cheddars... What happened? Went into this establishment to take my Mom out to lunch. My Mom has never eaten at a Cheddars and wanted her to get the Cheddar Experience! Given my experiences from Cheddars around Houston TX, figured the experience would be the same here in Tyler... Great! Well sad to say, I was sorely wrong. Took forever to get our food. Seemed we were waiting forever. My Mom got the Chicken Fried Steak and I had the Monte Cristo. Cheddars serves the best Monte Cristo! The best! Thank goodness my Monte Cristo was hands on and didn't require any silverware. Silverware was dirty. Yikes! I was so put off by it. Silverware still had food stuck to it. Yuck! Also the cloth napkins were all worn, tatered and burned? Looked like they needed to be retired. Do better Cheddars. Do better.

I asked for median rare steak and they gave me raw hard to cut the steak and really hard to chew

We were seated immediately at a clean table - no last minute wipe down that leaves the table sticky - our server was quick to take our drink orders and not pushy to get our food orders. The menu is very extensive so it took the man a couple more minutes to decide but as soon as I saw that double BLT sandwich I knew that was going in my belly! He ordered a meat lovers skillet, it seemed to us a small serving with more potatoes than meat, but he said it was tasty. I ordered the double BLT with candied pepper bacon. It was an exquisite sandwich. The bread was toasted to a beautiful crunch, the meat, tomatoes, lettuce were a good ratio to the bread. The aoli was good, too... not too sweet or hot, just full of flavor. This BLT was also BIG... I hate half and he ate the inners of the other half. He said for diner coffee it was really good and had four mugs! I had Diet Coke. You pay at the table. Our server was attentive and the food was good, the diner was very clean - even the glass doors. Will go again when we're down in Tyler.

There's plenty of nice local establishments, but some can be pricey and some are just more casual than you want. Scott Williams has perfected the restaurants of Tyler that are balanced between affordable and still quite nice. He got his toes in the water with FDs, before expanding into Javi's, Twelve, and now the fanciest of them all in III Palms. I thought of all those options, Twelve would be the most unique and tasty for my girlfriend and I. We went in an hour before they closed on a Sunday and were seated immediately. We weren't too hungry so we didn't expect to be there past their closing time, and we were ready to go. Our waiter was quick and attentive, bringing us water and helping us decide on drinks from the bar and our order. He also showed us their insane over-the-top whiskey menu. If you like whiskey, give Twelve a shot I guess. To order, I just got their 'Osaka Style' Pressed Roll while my girlfriend got a Sushi Bowl Salad. We got Sweet Potato Fries to share. As for drinks, I started with their Monkey See, Monkey Do, an impressive and firm beverage, while my girlfriend ordered their Destin Dream, a fun Pina Colada-like drink. It wasn't long before our food came out. The sushi was beautifully plated with some wasabi and pickled ginger on the side. I destroyed all the rolls. They were all very fresh and very high quality, which was remarkable for their $13.50 price tag. My girlfriend's sushi bowl looked insane. She ate most of it, but I filled the gaps and devoured the rest of it. The sweet potato fries were crispy and heavenly like all sweet potato fries usually are. I felt adventurous and I got a second drink of their Rose Garden, which was simple but flavorful. Compared to FDs, the menu might be a little more sea-inspired and more adventurous, but I think it leads to better, more unique food, especially with offerings like Oyster Rockefeller and a sushi bar. I also know Twelve does a great brunch as well, so keep that on your radar. Ultimately, as the bill came, the price was very manageable even with the alcohol. It's nice that you don't fully have to break the bank to have a nice meal in Tyler thanks to places like Twelve. I rate it a 12/10. Get it? hahahaha... RIYL: A slightly adventurous, but affordable night out.
