Costa Chop salad (no onion)
Alison L.

1836 is a local favorite for my fiancé and I. We go for lunch often and their weekend brunch is our favorite. We love bringing our friends and family from out of town here because of their diverse menu and atmosphere. My personal favorite is the costa chop salad, pictured below. I would love to give 5 stars if the service was consistently good. Staff is always nice there is no denying that. But sometimes it takes to long to be greeted at the table and/or servers have too many tables so refills may take long or service just lacks because of it. One of the owners is there often though and always wants to make sure you have a good experience.

Fried shrimp is very good and tastes fresh

First visit and enjoyed the uniqueness. Menu is very different and diverse. Easy to find and park. Reasonable prices and good size servings. Fried shrimp was very good. Gumbo was not great very over seasoned couldn't eat it. Salmon tacos were different and cooked well.

Shrimp and grits
Veronica L.

The shrimp and grits had decent flavor, but I wouldn't call it authentic low country shrimp and grits, having lived there several times. The ratio of grits to everything else was wrong. I wish the sausage had been cut into smaller pieces and rendered for flavor. Walker was an outstanding server- attentive and polite without being overbearing.

Christian L was our server. Coming to the ambiance the place was set up nice and neat. The girl at front desk was courteous. We initially thought Christian was lost but he was checking on us regularly and also saw us almost finishing the free nachos and brought in the refill. We were full and wanted to work on our dishes so didn't get them. My friend wanted the scrambled eggs but he was served sunny side up. We didn't inform him about it. Fried Green Tomatoes - 5/5 was nice. The tomatoes were not fried and it was baked which is good thing. I was afraid it would be oily but was good. Bloody Mary - 4/5 I went I could sense some alcohol in it but usually that's not the case. The glass was set up neat and clean. Spicy Watermelon- 5/5 it was nice and tasty. Side of Queso - 4.5/5 it was nice and good. Chilaquiles de pollo - 4.5/5 dint enjoy the chicken Tinga on it. Beans has meat in it so substituted with fries. Overall a decent experience. Can visit again when back in town. Overall I would say a 4.5 star experience.

Chicken rolls

The service was excellent and the restaurant is pleasing to the eye with a modern country time look. We ordered crawfish queso, chicken rolls and two kids meals with a spicy Margarita. Nothing really stood out besides maybe the Margarita but, tasted like bubble gum for the first few sips. Pricing is adequate and nothing was poorly cooked. Just seemed pretty plain Jane. The chicken rolls came with two dipping condiments one which was a jelly infused cilantro type. Was not a fan. Would return and try something new I think. Not dissatisfied but, not impressed.

Green chili Queso. The only good thing we ate there.

Horrible experience. We were so exited to try this place after reading reviews and hearing by word of mouth about how good it was. What a disappointment. We were seated in the bar area (which we didn't want to be) and it appeared that the bartender was the only staff on the floor. When we told her we didn't want any alcohol with our lunch, her response was 'oh'. She seemed rather disgusted that we weren't wanting to day drink. She spent the majority of her time laughing and having a grand time with her bar customers, which I get since they are her bread and butter, but if you don't like sober patrons, put a real waitress on the floor in addition to the bartender. I ordered what I thought was buttermilk fried chicken (since that's what it said on the menu) but what I received was chicken strips. The menu did not clarify that it was chicken STRIPS. When I expressed my disappointment, the bartender only said 'we have gravy you could eat with that'. Having spent many years in the service industry, I can tell you that's not how I would've treated my customer. What could have been said was 'I'm sorry it's not what you expected - let me bring you a menu and I can bring you something else if you don't like chicken strips. Apologies for the confusion on the menu'. Nope. She didn't offer to let me choose something else and more importantly, didn't care. Not. One. Bit. On top of not being what I thought I ordered, the chicken strips were terrible. The breading was funky and the chicken under the layers of breading was dry like the Sahara. I mean, Chicken E has waaay better strips... and that's a sentence I never thought I'd write... I give 1 star...well, because I can't give zero...and for the green chili Queso. That was actually good, and it's a good thing because that's all I ate for lunch. That and my non-alcoholic soda. I left hungry, disappointed beyond belief, angry about the rude and hateful server/bartender, and feeling duped by all the great reviews this place has. I can confidently say that I won't be back and will be sure to relay my experience to anyone who asks. Overall: NEVER AGAIN. PS - what's up with Tyler that NO ONE here serves REAL fried chicken except for the drive through at KFC?? (Which is where we went after we left this place.) So strange. I think I must be in the twilight zone...

The crawfish queso is our favorite! We try to eat here anytime we are visiting Tyler. Service has always been good.

Delisch! The ham salad appetizer is so good, I have dreamed of it. All dishes are seasoned perfectly!

The manager personally came over to ask about my allergy and to assure me they had gone as far as making a new breading mixture for my entree to avoid cross-contamination. Talk about going the extra mile!! Very impressed with the quality of service and our server Kevin did a fantastic job of taking care of us! Now - the food. We had the chips, salsa and queso to start. The queso is thick, creamy and has just the right touch of spiciness. So good! The salsa is finely chopped and very flavorful. 10/10 on all of the above! Everything fried was delicious!! The seasoning in the breading was good and the sides were a good quantity and also very good. But - the desserts...YUM!! We got the chocolate cake which was so fluffy and coated in chocolate that melted in our mouths. The key lime pie was equally high on the yum factor! Don't skip dessert here!! Can't wait to go back and try more menu items. I'm quite sure everything they make will be worth the trip! Thank you for an amazing experience!!

I ordered grilled salmon and my wife ordered fried catfish. Service was prompt and food was plentiful. My salmon had a cilantro cream sauce that was lightly seasoned and complemented my generous portion of salmon. It was accompanied by some nicely cooked rice and green beans and two hush puppies. My wife enjoyed her generous portion of fried catfish and coleslaw and ate a little of her fries and pinto beans. She said the fries and beans were fine but she was full from all of the catfish. Overall, it was a tasty meal but y'all better be hungry because you're gonna get plenty of eat here. Come check em out!
