Just went to lunch there today, and it makes me wonder why I don't come here more often. The menu is fairly traditional American, but what makes this great is the low prices combined with goo food. Take one of my stand-by dishes: The blackened catfish with two sides. The normal price is $8.39, but there's a lunch menu portion for $6.99. The only difference between the two is one vs. two catfish filets. I'm a pretty big eater, and the single filet is plenty - it's served on a bed of rice with two sides; if you pick a baked potato for one of the sides, you've got a huge meal. Pretty much everything else on the menu is less than $9 as well and I don't think we've had anything that could be described as bad. Today I had the chicken caesar pasta salad for $6.99 - a big plate of salad, ziti, and shaved parmesan with a nicely grilled chicken breast on top. Very good. The fried catfish my mom had was great, as was my son's bacon cheeseburger. The $3.99 onion ring appetizer can feed two people for a main meal if you want to order an appetizer. Well we hadn't been to cheddars for a long time my wife and I guesstimate maybe eight years. It was crowded and noisy and it seemed like people were a little disorganized. Our waitress was nice and apologetic about our long wait but she had no sense of urgency. It seemed like everybody who worked there had one pace slow . I love Cheddar's! I love the food, the prices, the portions, and the service. I usually describe Cheddar's to others as similar to Chili's but with better and cheaper food. Whenever I drive up to Austin, I eat at Cheddar's... because the closest one to me in Houston is 30 minutes away. Yes, I know that makes a lot of sense. I always order a side of honey-buttered croissants. They are undoubtedly unhealthy for you, but they are oh so delicious. Some entrees I've found to be consistently good are the chicken pot pie, baby back ribs, chicken tenders (these really are tender and breaded well), and dijon chicken and mushrooms. The other day I tried bourbon glazed salmon, which was pretty good but I actually preferred the other dishes I previously mentioned. Each entree comes with two sides, which are also very tasty. I haven't tried many of the appetizers, but the homemade onion rings (appetizer) comes in a HUMONGOUS batch. The food is almost always great, and it's very reasonably priced. The food would easily get 4 stars. They have the best chicken tenders in town! The salads are always nice and fresh. The hot croissants they serve are delicious. The prices are cheap! It is conveniently located. The service and long wait make it only a 3 star experience. (Some nights it gets only a 1 or 2!) Last nite was one of those nights. It was fairly busy. We were told the wait was 25 minutes. I adamantly refused to go next door to Fish Daddy's again, so we wait it out. 42 minutes in, my dining companions are fixing to bail! Oh wait! They're calling our name. We get seated and our waiter is there in a flash. Drinks arrive quickly, he takes our orders. Speed on the food orders? Um, not so much. It must be truly the worst place to work on the planet, because only once or twice have we ever seen the same people. The place is always packed. I would give no stars if an option!!~ We went a few days ago and while we were waiting by the hostess stand there were a group of women in the bar that were SCREAMING and CUSSING like I have never heard.We had 2 small shildren with us so my husband took them outside to wait. I asked about it and our waitress said they were there all the time and the management has done nothing about it. The waitress said the bartender is popular but brings in a rough crowd. They didn't take down any of my information aside my name so when we showed up to get the order, we were told items were out. I can admit, Cheddars has some tasty food for a quick buck but my goodness, they have the most unprofessional hostess working there. Just had an attitude all around! Very abrasive and rude. Girlfriend and I decided to get a quick bite to eat before we went to go see Dark Knight just down the street. Our experience at this Cheddars is normally very good although we usually take it to go or sit at the bar. Today, we decided to grab a table. Server didnt introduce himself and quickly took our drink and food order. We each got a soda and Im sorry to say they both tasted flat. Not a big deal. We ordered chips and queso and waited for 15 minutes for it to arrive, but it never did. During this time our server was nowhere to be found. A different server came out with what looked like our entrees, but upon closer examination she delivered someone elses entrees to our table. At this time our server finally made it back over to us and seemed oblivious to the fact that we didnt get our queso. After about five minutes we got our correct order delivered to the table. My burger was burnt to a crisp and tasted like nothing(server never asked how I would like it), well done would have been fine, but it was more like a hockey puck. Our server seemed very out of his element as he apologized for the tilapia(we didnt order tilapia). If we come back to this place we will be sitting at the bar or taking it to go as they never seem to mess anything up there. Cheddar reminds me of Cheesecake Factory --- big portions. The difference though is the price. Its considerably cheaper!!! There always seems to be a crowd here in the evenings, and the bar is always packed. I don't know if its people coming to eat or people coming to kill time since its right next to Tinseltown. I like Cheddar's because it is your typical cafe food (i.e. Chill's, TGIF, Applebees), but its prices are a tab bit lower and you get huge portions. The only reason why I wouldn't bring myself to give more stars was mainly the wait time. Everytime I have gone in, I have had to wait for about 30-45 minutes. I would give Cheddar's five stars, if the service was better. I love Cheddar's. I love their menu, their prices, and the food is AWESOME. However, occasionally the service is severely lacking. One time for our anniversary we went and the rude young man took about half an hour to ask us if we maybe wanted some drinks (like, water? yes?) and he had in his hand a returned pot pie from the people behind us. Never introduced himself. Very unprofessional and it pissed us off. We left for Red Lobster. On the other hand, if you get decent service (even normally it's never really exceptional), the food is the bomb. Chicken tenders are the best in the world. I get double brocolli, or baby carrots, or their delicious broccoli cheese casserole. I wish I could do three and a half stars because the food was really good but the service was just terrible! We were seated immediately under the classic Cheddar's ceiling fans - I've always loved those. Our server came over to take our drink order and my husband was looking at the list of TWO draft beers and he asked her, "Is this all you have on tap? These two?" She said it was but then listed at least four beers and there was one she couldn't remember. Then she said they were out of pilsner glasses but he could have two pint glasses for the same price. Ok, no problem. He ordered a Sam and we ordered an appetizer. She returned with waters and said that the classic Sam was swapped for Oktoberfest and she couldn't give him two pints because that would be more than a pilsner glass (which they were still out of, apparently). He asked what the other beer was that she couldn't remember and it was called Wicked Warrior. We've never heard of it so he ordered that. When she left, we looked it up and it should have been a dark, reddish IPA. She brought back something lighter than Budweiser. He said it was terrible. I got a Texas frozen swirl which was half classic margarita and half strawberry margarita and it was super delicious. I got brain freeze at least three times because it was so good. :) We started with the app sampler and it was really good. The potato skins were a touch under done but they were loaded with cheese and bacon to make up for it. The cheese curds reminded us of the MN State Fair (delicious!). The chicken tenders were great. Years ago Cheddar's had a dish of chicken tenders, potatoes and gravy, and (I think?) corn all mixed together in a bowl. Man, that was good. It's been off the menu for a while now but that would have been great comfort food for this rainy night. I got a sirloin and fried shrimp and both were delicious. Hubby got the New Orleans pasta which came with shrimp and sausage. It looked delicious and he didn't say a word while he ate which I took to be a good sign. :) The server only came back one time to bring the check. She never took the appetizer dishes off the table and never offered refills on our drinks. I don't expect servers to know the entire beer menu and I'm pretty patient, but just the ongoing forgetfulness made this a disappointing experience overall. There was a customer behind us who had a different server and he kind of chewed them out for bringing his entrée before the soup he ordered. Unfortunately, we only have a very short time for lunches during the week. This means that we can't stray too far from Round Rock and if we do stray, the place must have extremely efficient service or we must be willing to pay the consequences when get our tardy selves back to work. Cheddar's is one place that always, always serves us in a very timely and professional manner. There is a lunch time trick to this, however. When you walk through the double doors, immediately blaze past the hostess stand with a smile and a wave, and head for the bar on the left. I prefer to seat myself at the bar, because I know the bartenders at Cheddar's will hook us up. No, not with nice alcoholic beverages at lunchtime on a work day - even though they have tried, but with that previously mentioned speedy service. They are super friendly and after only a few trips will remember you and your strange dining habits. If you happen to be going here for dinner and have a small party and don't have the patience to wait for a regular table (the waits can sometimes be long because this place is popular with the locals and is also located close to the movie theater), this trick will sometimes work. There are a few tables in the bar area that are set up as first come, first served. As a bonus, you get to people watch as everyone comes in and orders a drink while they are waiting for their normal type table to open up. For lunch it is great to order the Ultimate Lunch Combo which includes your choice of three of the following items - Bowl of Soup, House Salad, Loaded Baked Potato, Half of Double Decker Club or a Caesar Salad. If you have more time to spare, consider ordering an appetizer like the Homemade Onion Rings or the Spinach Dip. Anything you ask for here will be consistently yummy. My family and I have been here several times and every time it has been something different. First time the service was super slow maybe 45 mins waiting for food and refills etc. Then the second time our waiter made inappropriate jokes around our daughters and yesterday was the third time. We go because my daughters wanted chicken and waffles --fine. As we go and request chicken and waffles the waitress says we have never had that on our menu, ummmmmmmm yes you did because this is the only thing my family likes here. But tooo move on then the Mac and cheese was cold, our food came out at all different time frames, and the combination of spaghetti and lasagna is just gross. I went about 3 times last week cause the food was delicious. I had 3 different servers each time and had a great time. I love the spinach dip and how hot it comes out enough to burn my tongue. I always alternate getting the raspberry and strawberry lemonade since its umlimited refills. The fish, french fries, and mashed potato are very cheap for its taste. The restaurant is always kept very clean and the people who come here are respectable of not being to loud. Like many other restaurants they do get extremely busy during fridays and saturdays to where you won't find parking in their parking lot and seeing as how its right next to the freeway you can't just park across the street and walk so good luck on those days if you want to dine in or just get it to go while parked somewhere. I'm from out of town visiting family for the summer and thought I'd try the Cheddars out here regardless of the bad experience I had already at a different location. Went with my family and my food tasted like it had been microwaved as it was mildly warm (almost cold). Also the kid who came to our table kept bringing out brown limes even after we requested ones that didn't look like they were rotting. I rarely fall into the "lets find the nearest chain restaurant for dinner" category. But with Cheddars, I actually do sometimes. With a family of 5, it's not easy to eat out and do it for a decent price, and even harder to actually eat food that doesn't feel like it might be killing you. At Cheddar's I can get in and out for under 30$ for my entire crew, and that is without anyone sharing their meal (which they sometimes do). The choices for adults are decent, and their Monte Cristo is pretty tasty. I have also fallen for the catfish and would recommend it. Both are under 10$ and you get a good portion. So when I don't wanna get too adventurous but still want to eat for a reasonable price, Cheddars does the trick. Huge portions of fried greasy food that was left in the frier too long, or not enough (one of my chicken tenders was raw in the center the rest were so grease laden they were slipery). Their beer list if you are some beer swilling frat boy is great, but if you have actual taste buds and like beers with flavor and craftmanship in them, please don't cross this locations threshold. The food could be described as what a broke welfare cousin of Chili's would serve, but at least its better than applebee's so I wont give it one star. Cheddars is a decent place for the most part. I enjoy their salads. The chicken is very tender and not dry like you get at some places. Of course it must be mentioned that the croissant that comes with the salad is basically a dessert for your salad, it is so tasty! My husband loves the spagana and swears by it. Traditional American food. I discovered Cheddar's long long ago while visiting my ex-husband in San Angelo. Back then, I ate beef and was totally in love with their Spasagna--it was really really good. It's spaghetti that's baked and served like lasagna. You can get it with either meat sauce or marinara. I can't vouch for this restaurant's version, but back then it was pretty good. I'm rating this place 4 stars because their broccoli cheese casserole is really good. I had the chicken and shrimp plate. Both were yummy, especially the shrimp. The tartar sauce is also really good. This is a place we visit maybe once or twice a year--not the best place in town, but it's good for traditional American cuisine. I've been to Cheddar's on many occasions and never had to experience the pickup service until today. If I could give a 1-star to the ones who answer the phone for pickup, I would. I tried calling three times. The first time, I was hung up on, the second time, no one answered, and the third time, I was put on hold for a ridiculously long time. I was still on hold as I pulled up to the parking lot! Thankfully, six months pregnant and with a six year old in tow, Donnie, the bartender, made all of my problems go away in an instant. He could see my frustration and took my order quickly. He made sure the food was up to par before adding it in the bag, and was very delightful the entire time. I didn't feel rushed at all. Just okay. I like Cheddar's. They generally have good food and their prices are affordable. This location tends to be a little sketchy though. On our last visit the service was sub-par because our waiter had entirely too many tables. And, both the mac & cheese and the tortilla soup did not live up to our expectations. My family likes Cheddar's for birthday dinners and get-togethers, but this location has a tacky sign at the front saying they won't seat groups. Came in for some lunch with my business partner. First thing I noticed was they were remodeling. We got seated pretty quick and both got the New Orleans pasta. All in all the dish was decent, but nothing too write home about. But the major down fall for this dish was the nasty black hair I found in the midst of my pasta. Really wanted to barf because I had already eaten over half of my plate. After finding that little surprise I was finished. My business partner flagged down our waiter and pointed out my discovery. His first response was that he thought it was a thread. To which my partner responded that it looked more like a pube and that's when the gaging began. Our waiter left us on that note in search of a manager. When the manager appeared, he apologized and asked if I would like another plate! Uh, NO! Another plate of pube pasta was not going to help. It was definitely not up to either of our expectations....especially when you wake up the next day regretting tour decision. I ordered the chicken tender platter with loaded mashed potatoes and broccoli cheese casserole. The plate was prepared sloppy, the mashed potatoes weren't hot due to the fact I had to mix for the butter to somewhat melt and broccoli casserole had some burnt crust in it. My sister wasn't satisfied either with her choice. I am not one to send my food back, therefore I shouldn't be complaining...but maybe this will help Cheddar's to do better. read more
