I recently ordered from Burnett's Food for the Soul and paid $52 for my meal. The food itself looked good, but I was disappointed that I couldn't see the menu beforehand. If I had known what was offered, I probably wouldn't have spent that much. The plate I received had oxtails, cabbage, and greens -- tasty but definitely overpriced compared to what I saw later. Another customer got two full plates for $35, and their portions were generous. That's a much better deal for the same type of food. The flavors were solid and the sides were well-seasoned, but the pricing felt inconsistent. First let me say this: the food is pricey, but you do get a lot of food. I had the fish and shrimp and they both were okay. I'd probably say they both needed a little more seasoning. The greens were okay, but needed more seasoning. The sweet potatoes were the same; they needed more seasoning. Now the dirty rice should be completely removed from the menu. My husband was tied up in an all-day workshop, which left me to my own devices. I reached out to one of my favorite "go with the flow", flexible friend for a late lunch. She suggested Burnett's Food for the Soul after hearing great feedback from social media. I was all in! It is located in Pflugerville, Texas, between Austin and Round Rock, TX where each live. Burnett's awards and recognitions are proudly displayed throughout the restaurant. As we walked in, we noticed a few unexpected items, including video game machines near the entrance and a display of fitness shoes. After scanning the QR code menu, we discovered that the entree prices were on the higher side. Darius Burnett, the owner, said prices are going up from his suppliers, so he has to pass these costs to his customers. My friend ordered wings, candied yams, mac and cheese, and cornbread, while I chose the fried catfish with candied yams. The catfish was lightly breaded, nicely fried, and packed with flavor. Darius shared that many of his seasonings come from Chicago, Illinois, his home city, adding a unique touch and depth of flavor to the dishes. I always like trying out new places especially when they are small hole in the wall kind of restaurants, and when you consider that having southern food as a lure, I am 100% down to try. Now that being said, unfortunately, this place was not for me. The pictures of the food on their adverts did not match the quality nor how the actual food even looked (and I think a lot of the pictures are not even food from the restaurant). The prices are way too high for what you get (comparing to other restaurants in general). Aarroun, who I believe was the owner was super polite and well mannered which is not something you come across a lot but also cocky. My staff and I were told about this little out of the way soul food spot from the staff at the Plantation house so we came to try it. You'd never know this was what people thought of this place!
