I'll start off by saying my food was delicious. I had the lox bagel with capers and veggie cream cheese and it was exactly what I needed. I showed up with some friends and we ordered our food to eat there, hoping that a table would open up by the time our food was ready. We actually all ended up waiting 20-30 minutes for each of our orders. My order was ready first, and when it was brought out, we were still standing there waiting for a table. We figured it was fine, and we could just ask for our food to be put in to-go containers since no tables were available for us. My bagel sandwich was brought out by one of the staff members and it looked SO DELICIOUS, I couldn't wait to eat it. I asked the staff member if I could actually have it to go since no tables were available, and she said ok. I assumed that they would just wrap my sandwich up so I could leave with it, but 10 minutes later, there was no sign of my sandwich. I was getting concerned. Finally, the staff member came back out with the a box in a bag. When I opened the box later, the bagel was completely deconstructed. The cream cheese was separate, as was the lox, onion, tomato, and capers. It was SUCH a bummer because I was really looking forward to eating the sandwich they carried out for me. I guess we were all just confused as to why the sandwich that got brought out to me originally couldn't have just been wrapped up for me when I asked for it to go? Like, why did the original bagel have to be discarded? It was just a strange thing to do. Anyway, I think I would only come back here if it wasn't busy. read more

I have been going to Charmed for 3 years now, it is less than a block from my house and it is so nice to have a nearby coffee shop and I come frequently (morning espresso and a breakfast sandwich are my standbys, both generally are pretty tasty). I'm sad to write this review, but there are just too many things that I cannot overlook any longer. This morning was my last visit to Charmed, I just can't justify the incremental price-gouging and the lack of value for the money any longer. I usually get a glass of soda water from the soda gun with my espresso, but they have started charging $3.60 per glass of soda water. The food can be tasty but EVERYTHING is served on single-serve, throw-away trays with waxed paper, and condiments like salt, pepper and hot sauce are all dispensed in little packets, fast-food style. It's just not pleasant to eat an omelet off a plastic tray with waxed paper, the paper gets wet and dissolves and mixes in with the food, and I am paying $13 for this? I'd hate to see the amount of waste that this business generates through exclusive use of single-use paper and plastic, talk about a carbon footprint! And really makes for an unpleasant dining experience. Bottom line, I hope the owner makes some changes, this could be a really wonderful neighborhood spot, but for now I will be walking a little further to a business that cares a little more for the customer experience, and the environment. read more

A fantastic and very welcome addition to upper Fells Point! From the minute you walk in, you can tell that the food will be delicious. There is typically fresh baked bread on the counter, and throughout our visit, neighbors were welcome by the staff as they stopped by for a load or a cookie. The menu is short (I love this - not overwhelming!) and always has at least a few items I want to order. They have great coffee and also have a liquor license. I have sat outside and inside and absolutely enjoyed both. It's a small operation, the atmosphere is darling, and the food is fresh and tasty. Solid spot! read more

I love this spot. It's just around the corner from my house and the food is delicious and wholesome. The coffee is great. I also love sauntering in for a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine on a Sunday afternoon. It's a daydream to have this spot so close by. Stop in, giggle with the barkeep about politics, chatter with neighborhood younglings who drop in for snacks, enjoy a leisurely brunch on a weekday. Yummy food, reasonable prices, feels like home but with more romance. I've been several times, so you'll forgive my experiences are a bit of a jumble. The carrot chutney on the Day Break Toast is delicious, but very sweet. I ended up eating less of it than was included to balance better with the goat cheese. But it was so good. The meatball sub is lovely and was a great late dinner one night when they were far too kind for us arriving a half hour before closing. The Six-Five is a top-notch veggie sandwich. Tucked away in Upper Fells, this spot meets the need for a neighborhood cafe hideaway. You come to the counter immediately upon entering, with the rest of the space stretching out to the right. I arrived to pick up a takeout order and found myself greeted by a skeptical look from the staff, rather than any sort of hello. Having to explain why I was there, the interaction never improved from there--far from warm and welcoming. I received my order and quickly exited. Service aside, the Day Break Toast was delicious. Toasted multigrain bread with just the right amount of chew is the perfect vehicle for a layer of creamy goat cheese beneath a sweet and savory shredded carrot chutney. Rich, toasted pine nuts add a roasted crunch to the bite, finished off by an added touch of sweetness from the drizzled honey. A flavorful and filling dish to start off the day with! My rating of Charmed varies each visit, sometimes it's a total five star, while others it is a -3 experience. Today is one of the negative experiences. We called ahead to give adequate time to prep the order. We were told 15 minutes, but we gave them roughly thirty before arriving, and the order wasn't ready. Okay, no problem, we all get busy. However... the food was ready and we had to wait on drinks (which seems backwards), but we sat and watched the hot dirty chai's we ordered sit on the machine untouched and come to us cold. Okay, we get it, this happens. But the chai's were wrong and weren't "dirty" (aka add espresso) at all. Extra money paid for extra shots we didn't receive. When we brought our food home, one of the two breakfast sandwiches were completely wrong and came on bread opposed to the bagel we paid an extra $1.50 for. While some experiences at Charmed are 5 star worthy, more often than not they're understaffed and things like this happen. And when I'm paying roughly $10 for a breakfast sandwich plus $6 for a latte, and it comes out wrong, it's exceptionally frustrating. It's very clear - and has been - they are usually understaffed especially in the morning with only one person taking orders (in person and on the phone) and making drinks, and delivering food, etc. read more

Have eaten here many times, and the food quality and service are both inconsistent, hence the 3 stars (half the time it's 3-4 stars and half the time it's 2-3 stars). Good: The beignets with Nutella dipping sauce are great the majority of times we've ordered them! Fair: The Italian sausage and meatball sandwiches are consistently decent. The Caesar salad with grilled chicken is also fairly consistent, though there was one time there were some wilted/browned romaine hearts. Not-so-good: The Maryland crab soup is on the salty side with minimal crab (sometimes none can be identified), and the bread served alongside it sometimes tastes more than a day-old. Breakfast sandwiches are also a hit and miss. A few times when they're busier, the food has taken quite long to come out, and when it did arrive, the soup and hot sandwiches were lukewarm and/or cool. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, so that's nice. There's a 'no laptop policy', so don't expect to bring work or be on your laptop while having coffee and pastries. read more

I think they were not expecting such an influx of customers on a Sunday and ran out of some things on the already small menu. To start off, it is a mix of self and waited service: you order at the counter, pick up the drinks yourself, but the food is brought out to you. Word of advice: grab a table first, especially if it's busy, you might find yourself awkwardly standing around after ordering with nowhere to sit. The decor is really cute, with animal art paintings, huge mirror; its cutesy and pretty small. Food: we came in with high expectations based on other reviews and were kind of disappointed. The chocolate croissant was overall tasty, but the dough resembled a cinnamon roll, not the flaky buttery dough of a croissant; the chocolate to dough ratio was also not in favor of chocolate. The bagel with veggie cream cheese was OK and the grilled cheese was decent. The tea and coffee were on point though, I love me a whole teapot instead of a small cup half-filled with water. Absolutely love this new bakery and breakfast cafe in butchers hill / upper fells! The French-style food and ambiance are so inviting and cozy. The staff is all very friendly, and the food is amazingly delicious. I'm glad we finally have a nice, casual coffee shop in the neighborhood that is classy but doesn't break the bank. They bake all the bread, bagels, and other goodies right there in the kitchen, so it's all fresh and tasty. Stop in for breakfast with a friend, or grab it to go on your way to work. This is my neighborhood spot so I've been giving them the benefit of the doubt. However, I've had a string (5-6 times) of let downs. I know times are tough but a lot of places are doing their best to put their best foot forward and I don't think Charmed has put themselves in that category. I ordered a sandwich tonight (no substitutions/omissions) and when I got home I saw it was literally 3 slices of deli meat with a slice of cheese on a baguette. Honestly, at this point shame on me bc this is probably the 3rd time I've gotten a sandwich recently and had it be basically a loaf of bread or completely messed up. I'm not sure if people in the kitchen are new or just dgaf but I can't pay $14 for a piece of bread and not say anything. Maybe I'll swing by for coffee but I don't think I'll order food again and have recommended the same to others. read more

Perfect breakfast spot in upper fells. It's an emporium for freshly made breads, pastries, and bagels. Knowing they make them in house makes me love their deliciousness even more . They also have a hot/cold drink bar with all the normal options. It seems like they are working towards having an evening menu as well with their beer/wine offerings and the appetizer options available. We went on a Thursday morning to grab a quick bite to eat. The inside is so cool featuring local artists' work on the walls for sale. They also sell the one and only Taharka brothers ice cream, which is a must try. I recommend the honey graham flavor. Another really cool feature is that they not only serve alcohol but have a nice collection of alcohol for sale as well. Really convenient location to grab and go. I have been to Charmed Kitchen several times now since I'm local to the neighborhood and I think that it's a really cute spot. I like their iced coffee and I've had a few pastries that are also very good. I give Charmed Kitchen two thumbs up in terms of food and drinks and ambiance/aesthetic. The reason I've knocked off two stars is only because of the inconsistency in service. Every time I go, I can never be too sure about how long I'm going to wait. Sometimes I'm in and out, and other times I'm waiting 20-30 minutes for a toasted bagel and coffee. I was really frustrated during my latest visit and ended up walking out after 10 minutes of waiting to place my order. A line of about 4 people formed as the barista was making drinks while chatting with another customer who seemed to be a regular. At first, I didn't mind waiting because I figured once the barista was finished making these coffee drinks, she would take my order. Instead, she began making cocktails that the regular customer asked for, even though she was not in line (at least that is how it seemed to me). At that point, I left. In that time waiting, the barista did not once acknowledge the line of 4 people waiting to place an order and instead tended to the regular only. If it was super busy, I'd understand, but there was no one else in the café besides me, the people in line with me, the barista, and the regular. If this was a one-off thing, I would never think to write a review about it. However, this is not the only time I (and others) have had to wait longer-than-average times to place an order or receive an order. Honestly, I feel that the staff struggles when there's more than 1-2 customers at a time, which leads to situations like these. All that said, I will go back because I like the food and drinks. I think this place is a great addition to the neighborhood and I want it to succeed! I hope it can work out the kinks in the service. So thankful that charm'd opened up shop where it did! With Salt closing this neighborhood needed a new local eatery and charm'd answers that call well. The place is small and, like it's name implies, charming. It's new and that definitely shows- the menus are being printed on paper, the dishes are evolving. I think the place is working to find its groove but I'm not mad about it. The food is sooooo good. I got the lobster ravioli- it was 6-8 pieces of ravioli containing lobster and mascarpone. It's all smothered in a tomato sauce with a shrimp ragu. Loved it. Partner got the charmed gnocchi. Like seriously so good! The mushrooms, the truffle, the meat, the *collard greens* all work together in this perfect medley. Did not disappoint! The only thing I would knock Charm'd on is the portion size. Personally when I order pasta I want it to be hearty and plentiful, and I thought both dishes were a little small given the price. Last thing I NEED to mention is the desert. Omg!! The tiramisu is lovely and very coffee forward. I was so into it, but if you don't like you ladyfingers drenched in the dark stuff I'd stay away. The pistachio gelato is HEAVENLY. The texture was so smooth and creamy, the flavor was perfect. I'd go back just for this gelato. Truth be told I am in love with Charmed Kitchen. I have probably been about seven or eight times though they've only been open about half a year. Their bread is really the star of their show, between the country loaf and the bread served with the charcuterie-- it is exquisite! It is flaky and perfect, a work of art fit for the Great British Baking Show! The ambiance is super cute, but small so this is not the ideal place for a massive party. I went with a group of seven and it was somewhat smushed so I would keep your groups relatively small. The best things I have eaten is the gnocchi, sooo well done and immediately put me into a food coma! Also the combo plate which they just introduced is amazing, it is a mix of 4 meats and 3 cheese and then homemade pickles and some olives along with three AWESOME SAUCES. A lemon curd, a housemate jam and a sort of spinach artichoke sauce. Their menu changes regularly so there is always an exciting new possibility to try. I got the charmd grilled cheese; my friend got a toasted bagel, and we split a waffle. Food came out quickly. Mostly just cheese and deliciously toasted bread (which you can't go wrong with), but would have liked a little more pancetta and arugula. Waffle was standard and tasty. Solid food, but nothing really stood out or was super amazing. Would definitely want to come back and try some of the lunch items--some of their sandwiches look really good. read more

After the fifth time returning to this quaint neighborhood cafe, the last straw has finally been broken. Over the last six months, the service (although not great to start - then implied by the newness of the restaurant) has gotten progressively worse. This morning, around 10:30am, my boyfriend and I stopped in for what was supposed to be a quick hour-at-most breakfast choice. Upon arriving, we noticed the restaurant was fairly filled, but most were checking out. It took 20 minutes for anyone to even take our order; and once the server arrived at our table, he seemed confused by what we were saying - even though it was a simple order of cold brew, drip coffee, "Da Waffle, side of bacon" and a lox platter. I had to correct him three times to ensure my order was taken correctly. 40 minutes later, every one of the mere four tables in the restaurant (all of whom had arrived after us), had received their food. It was only upon us asking if ours would be up soon, that the waiter informed us of the waffle machine being "down." He asked if we would be okay with pancakes instead, to which we kindly said was fine. Not 10 minutes later, a different waiter approached us to tell us that the waffle machine was "not down," they were simply "out of cooking spray." He then ALSO asked if we would be okay with pancakes - to which we said the other waiter had already checked that it was fine. Now, the questions ought to be begged - 1. How is a breakfast joint out of cooking spray? And 2, more importantly, would anyone have informed us that our food was unable to be made had we not asked FORTY minutes after ordering? Look, I used to work in food service. I understand things happen, and that there's miscommunication. But once it's addressed that there's an issue, food should be out as soon as humanly possible. It took 20 minutes for our food to arrive post-recognition. That's how long it should have taken to begin with. I mean, seriously, how long does it realistically take to make three pancakes? 10 minutes if you're REALLY pushing it? And how long does it take to "make" a lox platter? When you literally just have to toast a bagel? 5 minutes? Max? Not only did our food take well over an hour and multiple conversations to arrive, but we didn't even get our side of bacon! This visit was so disappointing. I live around the corner, not even a block away, and I can confidently say that I will never be coming back, unless SERIOUS changes are made - nor will I be telling anyone else to pay a visit. At this point, I've referred numerous friends and family, all of whom will be informed of the terrible service we had this morning. All of this to say, every single staff member needs to be retrained immediately. There are countless one-star reviews with the same issues - slow, unprofessional service - well-made food, I'll admit - but who really is willing to sacrifice two hours for a bagel and pancakes that could A) be made at home, or B) spent at another one of the many coffee shops in the area. I really do hope you take this review to heart, instead of it being one of countless reviews that have clearly fallen to the wayside. read more

Got takeout dinner from here for the first time earlier this week! The staff was super friendly, especially as we took awhile to decide what we wanted since it all sounded so good. I got the chicken breast sandwich and my boyfriend got the Da Butch with sides of homemade chips. Both were really good and nice portions. The homemade chips were great with yummy seasoning. They also have a large selection of alcohol and some pantry items which is nice to have! And they have a freezer dedicated to Taharka, so more points for them! I ordered the eggs in a nest and was surprised when my plate came to the table with two eggs on the plate with a bagel and bowl of potatoes on the side. The menu said multigrain bread. The title of the dish had the word NEST in it. I was confused. I asked the person who dropped it off if it was eggs in a nest and she said yes. When our server stopped by, I asked the same question and he said yes that is eggs in a nest. I kept wondering where the "nest"part came in...I guess it was nested when I took initiative and hoisted the eggs onto the dry, plain bagel that came on the plate...and the egg kind of slid into the hole of the bagel..."oh look. a nested egg...not" we laughed. As we got up to leave another server walked by with a plate that had two eggs cooked inside (nested) into two beautiful slices of multi grain toast that looked buttery and lovely. (see photos in other reviews) I wanted to go back and take back the 20% tip I left. I asked TWO different people and they both lied to me. I mean...if it's wrong, just fess up to it. But to just flat out lie...c'mon. When I got outside, I looked at the photos on Yelp and saw the plate with the yummy bread and two eggs cooked inside... I mean...I know it's just eggs and toast. but I didn't get what I expected. And then was lied to. I am a server. I get it. Working brunch sucks. But you don't have to suck as a server. It's not helping your restaurant when guests feel cheated and don't get what they ordered. That is how you lose business. IMO there are plenty of other places in the area that have better menu options and leave you wanting to come back. This is not the case with Charmed Kitchen. read more

i was working near by and wanted their avocado toast. they took it off the menu for some reason but they still have toast and avocados (bad ones). so i decided to get a breakfast sandwich. they have options: egg sandwich, egg and cheese sandwich, then breakfast sandwich where u select a meat option. i chose the breakfast sandwich and selected bacon as my meat option, ordering online on their toast app. i waited 30 mins after ordering to pick it up, but still had to wait at the end of a long long line that took me another 30 mins to get through. by the time i got there i got my cold soggy sandwich. there is no bacon, and the bread is not toasted as promised and the egg is super rubbery. the avocado that i paid extra for was foul. the price was good i thought, it looked clean inside. this is garbage tho im never going back again. read more
