Spent a gloomy day walking around the Ave when we decided we needed a pastry. We've tried most of the coffee shops on the Ave, so this was a new spot for us. The workers were kind, answered all our questions, and the service was good. It's a cute little cafe just off the main street. The inside is nicely decorated and they even have a cute trinket shelf. definitely come early, as things will sell out (especially on weekends). i've tried a few things from here and liked all of them: the strawberry shortcake, almond croissant, chocolate croissant, pistachio croissant, and pear galette. you really can't go wrong with a pastry from Maillard. the peach punch and darjeeling teas are very good as well. if you usually add sweetener to your tea, peach punch is already quite sweet. the shop is quite small, with limited seating options, but if the weather is nice there are plenty of benches outside. since they close sort of early i always stop in when i'm around Hampden in the morning. read more

I tried one thing here, so this review is based on that! This super cute bakery is extremely small. It's a tight space that doesn't fit a lot of people, but there are two really small round tables that could fit three seated guests. We came for the famous almond croissant, but unfortunately it was sold out by the time we arrived. We ended up trying the pain au chocolat. We opted to sit outside on their bench by their cute logo. Maillard Pastries is THE best pastry shop in Baltimore. I've been coming here since it opened & can undoubtedly say the service, pastries & drinks are unrivaled. The croissants are always *extremely* flaky and I've appreciated how their ingredients match the seasons. Right now, they've got a Tomato, Goat Cheese, Pesto galette that's so summery & perfect. Flaky & savory & the tomatoes melt in your mouth. In the fall, though, they turn to apples & squash. Their apple spiced bundt cake was amazing. My favorite regulars are the Morning Bun, Spinach Snail, and Ham & Cheese. Be sure to check their instagram stories for updated daily menus! I can't omit their drinks/cake menu either. Their house made honey syrup for an iced latte is so unique. Their cakes are gorgeous & always moist. I've been here a few times--the cashiers and bakers are always lovely, and the glass case of pastries always beckons! It's quite small, so I wouldn't expect to get the table unless you go at off hours. Food-wise, it's quite a variety! What they seem to be known for, and always run out of, are the almond croissants. They're quite good, with plentiful frangipane! However, I've also found the croissant itself to be a bit dry, lacking the buttery softness that a perfect croissant exudes. They usually have a collection of hand pies--I was underwhelmed when I tried them. Fine, but unexciting. Likewise for the cakes, which are good and pretty, but certainly not something I would travel for, and are overshadowed by their other offerings. However, I really enjoy it when they offer tarts! Perfect crusts, fillings that tend a little too sweet, but certainly delicious. I would certainly recommend whatever tart they have, regardless of other offerings. I love the savory offerings, especially cheddar rosemary scones, hand pies, and the ham & cheese croissant. Among the sweet offerings, the galettes and tarts are magical. Absolutely amazing! An adorable, quaint little bakery tucked into a brightly painted rowhouse. We stopped here after brunch to pickup some tasty treats for my brother's birthday. I checked their Instagram for what was available, and we ended up getting two boxes of lemon merengue tarts. They were excellent! Each bite packs a tart lemon and sugary sweet punch. Everyone in my family loved theirs and couldn't stop telling me how delicious they were. On top of how insanely good the tarts were, the employees were so sweet (pun intended ), kind, and helpful! Opened for six weeks, Hampden now has its own French pastry place on Chestnut, across the street from newly relocated Common Grounds and around the corner from recently renovated Charmery. Small quibble: Limited hours (Sat.-Mon.!) and food so good, they run out and might close before the 3 p.m. time. Otherwise, a citrus cheese danish and almond croissant I consumed were fantastic! They also have quiche of the day and carrot goat cheese puffs, among other savory categories. This is the real deal, amigos--or should I say mes amis! read more

I've been drooling over their pastries on Instagram for some time now and was super excited when it was announced they were taking over this location in Hampden. It was lovely walking in and seeing a case full of stunning pastries - truly, it was impossible to make a decision, so naturally the right one was to get pretty much one of everything! The financiers - one matcha and one chocolate - were incredible. I would go back daily just to have those alone. But add on the cherry hand pie, which was the perfect sized treat hitting all the right notes of texture and taste. The morning bun and cheddar scone were solid and the pies were just *chef's kiss*. My one and only not so favorite thing was the bostock but really it was a personal preference thing as I am not a fan of orange, which it ended up being. I should have asked when I was there but was simply caught up in the excitement of a fully stocked case that it was a fail on my end only. The person who rang me up was just as friendly and lovely as you'd expect someone working in an amazing bakery to be. I absolutely we will be back regularly. read more

I would say it lives up to the hype. The pastry taste as god as it looks. I tried 4 variety: lemon meringue tart, almond croissant, financier and a creamy mushroom handpie. I really loved the lemon meringue tart- very tangy and tasty. Also the almond croissant was perfect, flaky in each bite. Wished I discovered this store sooner. I would probably go at a weekly basis. Before opening a storefront in Hampden in the last few weeks, Maillard Pastries was a wholesale bakery operating out of a shared kitchen. Now, they're open Saturday through Monday from 8-3 in the old donut shop on Chestnut across from the new Common Ground location. I've been in a couple of times now. They're a pretty classic bakery with a lot of the goodies you'd expect: croissants, pain au chocolat, hand pies, scones, tarts, and more. They also offer a few items that I'm not as familiar with, including their bostok (a French pastry made from leftover brioche)! The offerings aren't the same every weekend, so it's fun to just show up and try a few new things! I've tried a few items now, and everything has been good. The service is great as well. It's take out only (no where to sit), so stop by and take some home with you. Heads up: they do tend to sell out, so come by earlier if there's something you must have. And follow them on Instagram for updates on what they'll have in the bakery over the weekend! Happy to have them in the neighborhood! We'll be by regularly, I'm sure! read more

First rate pastries from this hole in the wall shop just south of the Avenue in Hampden. I had the Morning Bun (I think that's what it was called?) which is basically like a funky looking cinnamon sugar roll and it was first rate. The interesting aspect of it is that because it is wrapped around itself it has an inside that's quite chewy which is less common among pastries. However the outside was just as light and flaky as one could expect and melted in your mouth. Like any high end pastry shop these are made fresh daily and definitely taste as such. Highly recommend and hope to come back here and try some other goodies. The only downside is the hours are quite limited so be sure to check before going. read more

Great new pastry shop in Hampden! It's just around the corner from the Charmery, and it took over the old donut shop. It's a very quaint small location with a cute exterior. They have many pastries in the display case, from tarts to the classics like croissants and cookies. Prices of pastries range from ~$1.5 for the small cookies to $4 for the larger croissants and $5-6 for the tarts. One cool thing they do is give 4 pastries from the day before for $10 in a "mystery bag." I got some great pastries to try including the morning bun, the almond croissant, and the berry handpie. I also got a cookie (white shortbread with vanilla, rose, pistachio) just because it looked so pretty! There's no where to sit inside, but there's a cute bench right outside or you can take it to go as you walk around Hampden. Street parking was not too bad to find around the corner from the shop. Overall, a great new pastry shop in Hampden with a lot of delicious options! read more

Cakes are always so well balanced between cake and icing. I've been pretty much every other weekend since it opened and I have yet to be disappointed by a single item. It's all good. Sometimes it's hard to choose because everything looks delicious. I also really like how seasonal the menu is - fruits when they're in season, that kind of thing. Always something new. The space is super cute, too, and the service is excellent. 10/10 no notes, glad to have them in my neighborhood. read more

Seriously the best pastries in Hampden... I lived in Paris for a little while and Maillard's croissants are comparable to croissants you'd buy in France.
