Savory tomato and herb focaccia- yum!
James L.

Located in the Harwood section in Charles Village, Motzi Bread is my new favorite bakery in Baltimore. Ever since Hoehn's Bakery (https://www.yelp.com/biz/hoehns-bakery-baltimore?sort_by=date_desc) unexpected and sadly closed in September of this year, every time I'm in the area, I make sure to stop by this unassuming shop for some of the BEST baked goods around. We bought a bunch of different items, including a loaf of their challah bread, a few pain au chocolats, and a piping hot savory tomato and herb focaccia. Everything was fantastic. The pan au chocolat had a flaky but not dry texture and the filling was a high quality semi-sweet chocolate. But that tomato and herb focaccia - dang, that was tasty! Super fresh heirloom cherry tomatoes were split, topped with herbs, salt, and a light coating of oil, and then baked to perfection. Even with a load of toppings, the focaccia bread was not soggy. Challah bread was used for breakfast the next day when I was hosting family for brunch, and was enjoyed toasted with a bit of butter, cut and used for a few slices of French toast, and also torn and used to sop up sunny side up eggs. Owners Russell Trimmer and Maya Munoz live directly above the space and I love supporting places like Motzi Bread, especially when you read about their business philosophy and practices: https://www.motzibread.com/about. I also highly admire Motzi Bread's "pay what you can" policy, since this means no patrons get turned away which benefits those members of the community who might be impacted by food insecurity.

Motzi Bread is a lovely, local, bakery offering delectable brown-bread loaves to complement your meals all week long. On the day the bread is baked, its hearty outer crust belies the soft, spongy, even sticky interior. It's amazing dunked in hot soup, spread generously with peanut butter and honey, or even just eaten on its own. While Motzi Bread recently opened a bakery, the grand opening has been stymied by the advent of COVID-19, and so instead they are offering an online ordering system through their website, which can then be picked up from their front porch "Bread Library" directly above the bakery (how cute!). There is a strictly one person on the porch at a time policy, and they have wisely double bagged all breads so you can discard the outer bag when reaching home. Forget the 6 foot distancing rule because I have observed baker Russell staying about double that distance away from passersby as he takes the responsibility of food safety very seriously. It is appreciated Russell! Unsurprisingly, given that example, Maya and Russell, the bakers and owners, are both fabulously kind people, and deserve our every support. They have baking cred, too - Russell formerly led the bread team at Woodberry Kitchen! So far we have tried their baguette (delicious), the rye (tasty), the sesame (yum) and the classic (my favorite!!). Not only is their bread amazing but they also have a social mission, providing frequent donation loaves to local charities, and providing discounts to those who need them. Now there's a cause (and loaf) worth embracing with open arms!

When my wife and I had discovered this gem three blocks away from our house, we decided to do a little more research. After discovering that Motzi has a subscription service, we gave it a trial run with a 3-month subscription back in April, and have since re-upped for a 6-month subscription. The subscription is very flexible; you're basically allotted credits for the time you purchased. You can select one product a week, save your credits, and even donate your products to charity. What is even more awesome is that Motzi has a pay-what-you-can system. Although we pay the suggested price, we love to see the willingness to be flexible in how someone pays. We have tried various products from Motzi, our favorite is the Benny, which is their sesame rye. We usually try to get it sliced, unless they made it really fresh, which they tend to do, but either way, it is so good for that charcuterie board. Another favorite is the family loaf, which can be sliced, and we use it for sandwiches. Another favorite is the blueberry muffins in which they may look small, but they are perfect. The blueberries are plump and not overly sweet. The shop originally did web-based orders only but had opened up to same-day orders within the last couple of weeks. But be prepared to wait in a line as the neighborhood has come out in full support and the shop only allows one household at a time. The shop has played host to a political candidate in recent weeks, allowing the candidate to set up shop right next to the store. They even named a bread after the candidate with part of the proceeds going to the candidate.

We have been subscribers for awhile (since before the storefront opened) and it has been so great to see the shop grow and evolve. The bread is unique and delicious - our favorite is the benne heirloom sesame but we also love the rye 5 ways. Our kids love getting a treat there - usually the chocolate chip cookies or hot cocoa. I can also highly recommend the haldi doodh (golden milk) and chai which have great flavors and aren't too sweet. Motzi has great sourcing practices, great presence in the community, and great customer service. Plus everything is pay what you can! I also recommend their seasonal specialties like the holiday cookie box and rotating focaccias. The line can get a bit long but it moves quickly. Just allow a few minutes to pick up your items and enjoy chatting with the other folks who are waiting as well. I've met some great people in line at Motzi

Matcha crookie was so gluttonous, I'm glad they only do it on weekends otherwise I'd be getting this all the time. Their pineapple coconut croissant is so fresh (summertime pastry). It's within the Johns Hopkins college campus & a neighborhood, so parking is really horrible. I ended up parking in a non spot and putting my hazards on. It's a cute little, but spacious place located next to an airport building. It's on the corner and has a nice little outside seating area with about 5 tables. Inside is bigger than it looks and has a nice amount of seating as well. Since my time was limited, I didn't really get to explore the menu like I wanted, so I ordered a hazelnut latte and a ham & cheese croissant. Their croissants looked so good, I wanted one of each. They also had several toasts on their menu. I'll have to go back for sure! Th service was regular, you order, they tell you how much you owe and you pay. I got in my car and couldn't wait. My first bite was like a bite into heaven. Every bite was the same way, so delicious & delicate. I wish I had two. The latte was perfect, just the right amount of hazelnut. Kanom Cafe is a must try!

Even though the temperature was in the low teens with a windchill around zero, GKs all got ice creams. They only issue any of them had was that the gargantuan sizes were still not big enough; taste was that good. Me, I picked up a sfogliatella riccia to enjoy as a post-theater late-night snack. We also picked up a bunch of Italian cookies to take home. We had to hide them so the GK vultures couldn't get to them early. Vacarro's had a great selection even at 6PM. The bakery aroma was fantastic, seating was plentiful, prices were reasonable, and parking (street and for-pay lot) close by. It's a must-stop destination whenever you make it to Little Italy. Arrived in the afternoon during a busy weekend and decided to take out for desserts. My first visit and was underwhelmed by the service received. Rushed and transactional. Packaging was very sloppy and my napoleons were shoved to the side, making the clear clamshells very messy when I arrived home. If only the desserts were saving grace, but was left disappointed as well. As others have mentioned, the pastries do not taste fresh. The ricotta cream in the original cannoli tasted warm and gritty, the shell was stale. I noticed these were sitting out. The puff pastry in the Napoleons were soggy. The cream puffs shell was stale and chocolate topping was super sweet, unfortunately these were far from heavenly. Maybe another day, Vaccaro.

To be honest the tamago sando was a solid sandwich and maybe i should have toasted it but i was getting it to go to bring while traveling... was nothing mindblowing. however, the guava croissant was AMAZING. the lamination, the texture, that wonderful crunch and fresh guava taste with balanced sweetness brightened up the gloomy day! I happily ate it quite quickly in one sitting after the sando despite how big it was. When I got back to atlanta i tried the chausson aux champignon a bit without it toasted and also toasted and it was TOO GOOD both ways! i enjoyed the mushrooms as they brought soo much good umami goodness to my tastebuds along with the mushroom aioli served with it! I really want to visit baltimore if only for a layover again so i can pickup more delightful pastries! I tried their seasonal brown sugar hojicha coffee latte and that was great as well! and oopsies i forgot to take a picture of the chausson aux champignon but it looks like a turover! although there was a line, i had a lovely conversation with a few nice people in front of me so the wait wasn't bad at all!
