Hurricane Grill & Wings markets itself as an "escape from the ordinary" -- a place where the sun is…read morealways shining, the wings are hot and crispy, and the beers are frosty enough to make you forget whatever storm you walked in with. The website paints a picture of a beach‑side getaway: easygoing, flavorful, relaxed. That's exactly why our visit felt so mismatched. My partner and I ordered the Perfect Storm sampler and 10 bone‑in wings, split between Garlic Ginger and Garlic Parm. The wings came mixed with flats and drums, which was fine, but both flavors were so greasy that we had to wipe them down before eating. And not just a little sheen -- I mean the kind of oiliness that dulls the seasoning and clings to your fingers. The Garlic Ginger had a nice aromatic profile underneath, but the fat muted it. The Garlic Parm leaned heavy, with the grease overshadowing any sharpness from the garlic or cheese. The sampler didn't fare much better. The fries were soggy and limp, the kind of texture that tells you the oil temperature dropped or the batch sat too long. The shrimp and mozzarella were edible, but lacked crispness -- everything felt weighed down instead of bright or crunchy. When fried food loses its structure, it loses its appeal, and that's exactly what happened here. From a food‑critic standpoint, the issue wasn't flavor -- it was technique. Grease is a symptom. It usually means the oil wasn't hot enough, the baskets were overloaded, or the fry time wasn't adjusted. When the oil temp drops, moisture stays trapped inside the food, and instead of crisping, it absorbs the fat. That's how you end up with wings that feel slick instead of snappy and fries that collapse under their own weight. And that's where the disconnect with the branding hits hardest. The website promises "hot and crispy wings with a 100% chance of cold, frothy beers," "jumbo‑sized wings," and "an escape from the ordinary." What we received felt more like a kitchen struggling to keep up -- heavy food, tired textures, and none of the crispness that defines good fried comfort food. The frustrating part is that the service was excellent. Our server was warm, attentive, and genuinely kind -- the kind of person who makes you feel taken care of before the food even arrives. But the kitchen execution didn't rise to meet that level. When the service is top‑tier and the food feels like an afterthought, the imbalance becomes impossible to ignore. Great people, but the food didn't match the promise or the care they put into the experience. We wouldn't return.

Be very careful about where you park…read more I visited Pluckers and the parking lot directly in front of the restaurant was at capacity. A Pluckers staff member told us that we could park in the front of a neighboring business because there was no room in the Pluckers lot. We followed the employee's instructions and parked where we were directed. Unfortunately, my vehicle was later towed from that location, resulting in an unexpected towing expense. I understand that neighboring businesses have their own parking policies, but when a restaurant employee directs customers to park somewhere, I would expect that employee to know whether that location is actually permitted for customer parking--or at minimum clearly warn customers of the risk. I have contacted Pluckers to request reimbursement for the towing expense and am waiting to see how management handles the situation. If you visit this location, I strongly recommend confirming exactly where you are allowed to park before leaving your vehicle. I hope no one else has to bear the payment of a $334.33 tow invoice.

The young lady at the register left quickly when we approached, and when I asked if we could dine in, she told us there was no room. That felt unusual, but we decided to order takeout. While placing the order, she mentioned there were plumbing issues and something was overflowing, which raised another concern about the cleanliness of the environment. She also seemed anxious and unprofessional during the interaction. We were told the food would take about 15 minutes, but it ended up being closer to 30-45 minutes. Unfortunately, the food did not meet our expectations, especially for the price. The oxtails, rice, greens, and macaroni and cheese were around $36. The okra looked like it had been refried, and the chicken wings tasted as though they were cooked in old grease. The greens had an unusual flavor, and the macaroni and cheese did not taste like traditional mac and cheese. The oxtails were messy but not tender. Based on the lack of professionalism, the long wait, and the overall quality of the food, I do not plan to return.

They were perfectly seasoned with just the right amount of vinegar and cooked to that ideal tender texture without being mushy. The fried chicken and catfish were outstanding. Both were well seasoned, incredibly crispy, and tasted like they were fried in fresh grease. Every bite was hot, fresh, and full of flavor. The baked macaroni and cheese was good, but it leaned a little more toward a Velveeta-style cheese sauce than my personal preference. Still a solid 9/10. I also ordered the Peach Passion Fruit Hennessy margarita, and it was superb. Smooth, flavorful, and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The staff was friendly and welcoming, the prices were very reasonable, and the portions were generous. If you're looking for authentic soul food in Austin, The Rolling Rooster is absolutely worth the stop. I'll definitely be back.

I asked Nick if we were still okay, and it wasn't one of those fake "yeah, you're fine" answers. They welcomed us in, took our order, and went right to work like it was any other time of day. That's what stood out to me. There wasn't a shortcut taken because it was close to closing. They didn't grab slices that had been sitting around. They made them the way they're supposed to be made. Crispy pepperoni, bubbling cheese, perfect crust... exactly what you'd expect from a place that takes pride in what they serve. At the end of the day, cooking great pizza is what they're supposed to do. The difference is that 600° does it with the same care at 9:30 at night as they do at lunchtime, and that's rare. Huge shout-out to Nick and the team. Great people, great pizza, and absolutely worth the drive every single time. Tue vibe is so chill !! I love it!!

Thoughts on food - The buffalo chicken tasted less like well buffalo chicken (what I'd imagine more on a wing sauce) and more just like a chicken pizza. I'm not sure how to describe it but I think the sauce missed the mark for me. The Margherita was good, I am a veggie lover so I just wish there were more tomato's and herbs on that side, otherwise it could be a bit dry. The Greek salad was a great veggie item to split, and the tiramisu is better than what you'd get at HEB but I wouldn't put it number 1 on my list either. I wish I had solid pieces of lady fingers in each bite. I'm uncertain given the influx of pizza options in the area if I'd order a whole pie myself, I'm open to trying the slices.
