You know that one movie? The one with that one actor who wears Texas on his sleeve? I think he has a catchphrase with something along the lines of "For sure, for sure, for sure." I'm pretty sure that's what he says. Anyways, he eats at this burger drive-thru place called Top Notch. Thanks to this movie representing Austin so well, the movie and the restaurant became a cultural touchstone of the Texas capital. Fifty years later, Top Notch opened their second location in the middle of Hutto, Texas. I've been to the Hutto Top Notch location three times now. Once to try, once because of its convenience during an event, and once for lunch with co-workers. Each time, I've left with the same impression: it's alright, alright, alright. That's what the quote was. I remember now. I've only had their burgers. Twice, their cheeseburger, and yesterday, the Top Pick Burger. All things considered, it's a decent burger. There is nothing obscene or wrong with the burger. It's just a burger. The Top Pick Burger seems like it could be fun and special, but it's really just a worse burger compared to their cheeseburger. It's not bad, but I didn't find it a better replacement for a cheeseburger. Their menu has a lot more options than just their charcoal-broiled hamburgers. They have fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, seafood combos, and their Top Dog sandwich. Two hot dogs in a sandwich. Something I'd whip together if I was seeing stars off Benadryl. Their fries are pretty good, though pretty simple: skinny, crispy, and salty. Good fries. Their shakes are thick without it being a fight for my life to drink. I don't know if my lack of intense enjoyment was thanks to recently having Johnny Rockets and being more impressed with their attempts at crafting a retro '60s burger joint, but Top Notch is more or less Middle-of-the-Pack Notch. read more

We stopped by on a saturday afternoon for burgers and fries and the cutest display came in the form of a old car that was the basket fries sit in. my girls took it home as a new "toy". ah kids and their obsession with non toys as toys. I added bacon to my single cheeseburger and it was the star of the show. best, crunchiest bacon i've ever had on a burger. ever. The 2 star deduction came from the burger being ice cold...and we ate there. I almost asked if they could toss it in the microwave for 15 seconds just to help melt my cheese. I'm sure it was the lettuce and tomato that dropped the temp of everything ... but bc the bacon was so great I decided to just leave well enough alone. Coleslaw is terrible...Mashed Pototoes were good. Fries were only ok. Chicken, lacked seasoning. Service was very good. Really cute buildout. Lots of people. Good for kids/families. Absolutely delicious burgers! I've tried the Top Notch in Austin on Burnet Rd and was so excited to see this one that is only fifteen minutes away. Tastes just as good, if not better! Food always comes out hot and delicious. Staff are very helpful and friendly. We received our food a little late once because our ticket got lost, the manager gave us free shake coupons for next time even though it was entirely fine! Parking can be a little difficult sometimes, especially on the weekends since it shares a parking lot with several other businesses. In terms of seating, there's indoor and outdoor seating, both in the front and the back. It's great for kids since there's a big open field out back for them to run around. Had to try Top Notch Hutto cause its new in the Co Op area. This is a nod to the past, including the drive in vibe. The employees were friendly and respectful the place was spotless but sadly it wasn't really anything unique. Similar in character to P Terry's honesty except I don't think the fries are homemade. My Jalapeño burger was good but not particularly special and the fries were crispy but average. I love that Hutto area is getting more dining options and I can't wait for Jack Allen's Not sure Top Notch is a repeater for us but it is better than micky d's. read more

People definitely come here for the experience and covered patio that overlooks the lawn with stage. Kids are able to run around and play. The vibes of this place is nice. They also offer carhop service if you pull into a drive in spot. It is card only out there. Gives you the vintage feel as they play oldies while you wait. Kid's meals come in a classic car. They love it! I have been to this place three times. The service is nice. The people who work here are pleasant. I typically get the chicken tenders or jalapeño burger. Chicken tenders are crispy and meat is not dry. I like to dip it into the gravy along with the toast that comes with it. I spice up my gravy with hot sauce..yum! My latest visit, I decided to try more items. The seafood dinner (mixed fish and shrimp). I went with the combo to try the fish and shrimp. You get two pieces of fish and three fried shrimp. It comes with cole slaw, Texas toast and fries for $13.49. The fish and shrimp were fried perfectly so they were crispy. The fish batter I could not put my finger on the seasoning, but it was definitely a different flavor. I was indifferent about the fried seafood dinner. The fried okra and tater tots were good. The onion rings were a miss for me. The mashed potatoes and cole slaw were ok. My little enjoyed the grilled cheese sandwich and the two chicken drumsticks. While the nostalgic side of me wants to love this place the realistic side of me is not a fan. I do love the ol' school vibe of a burger joint but my issue is food quality. Chili cheese burger with barely any chili or cheese-disappointed. Fried that were so greasy we couldn't enjoy them. The kids meal comes in a little car and that's cute and the malt/shakes are good but for two combos and a kids meal we spent almost $50!! I've been going to the original TN since the 70s, so I thought I would try out their newest location. Like their original location, you can pull into one the 10 spots to order and dine in you car. However, there are no cash orders for outside orders, for cash option you have to dine in. Once inside they'll be playing those oldies overhead. The design inside and out is pretty much in keeping with the original location. I ordered the #4 Longhorn, which is a double cheeseburger combo which will run you about $15. The real turn off for me is facing that big tip screen for placing my own order and picking it up at the counter. They should take a lesson from Hat Creek, P Terry's and In-N-Out because they do not have that last second cash grab. I got here during the Tuesday lunch rush, but it was just myself and one other couple inside the joint the entire time. The burger was pretty much keeping with what their competitors serve and they do give you a generous portion of fries. The burger meat itself looks previously frozen, not fresh and definitely not a smash burger. One thing they offer that their competitors don't, is a can of cold beer. If you're tired of your other burger options and don't mind coughing up a few bucks for a tip, this is a good acceptable lunch destination. Plenty of photos to highlight this review. read more

I was so excited about this new Top Notch location. Hutto is in need of some good, non franchise food joints. I must say I've never tried the original location in Austin. So everything about this visit was a brand new Top Notch experience. The good thing about this place is that it's brand new, so everything is clean and the restaurant looks very nice and inviting. That's about it. The service was awkward, and not as positive, cheery, or knowledgeable as you'd expect a new restaurant to have. I know it's just a burger joint, but if you can find good service at In N Out, Shake Shack, Mighty Fine, etc, then a place that charges these kinds of prices should try and at least compare to that level. As for the food, I tried the Longhorn Special Burger combo. After tax and a 20% tip, my tab was a few cents short of $20...just for my one combo. Without being exaggerated or extreme, the burger was the most flavorless burger I've had in my whole life. Visually, it looked decent. Texturally, it felt fine. But flavor-wise, even McDonald's provides more. The fries are fast food quality at best. At least the soda machine works well. Surprisingly, I still feel that Top Notch is going to do just fine in Hutto. But there's really nothing top notch you're going to find here. read more

I wish I read the reviews before coming here but my husband wanted to check it out. It's a very nice space, large with the car hop stands and indoor and outdoor dining. It is very themed with decor and music playing. We got a burger combo, seafood combo, 2 kids meals = $50+$10 tip. Yikes The longhorn special burger was tasty, however I'm not sure it was worth the $12 price tag for a combo as the fries weren't that great. I got the seafood combo, the fish and shrimp were cooked well but again not sure if the quality equaled $14 for the plate. I felt like the shrimp were overcooked and tasted like the costco fried shrimp you get in the frozen section. The flavoring on the fish was interesting, had a hint of curry IMO. The best deal was the kids meals and they came in cute car boxes. I think we might try it again and get the fried chicken specials. Those looked pretty tasty but I hope they can get their ratios adjusted and food quality and consistency fixed. I'm sure rent is pricey in the Co-Op but the reviews are fairly consistent that it's overpriced here and I'd have to agree. read more

We waited for the crowds to ease up here in Hutto for our Top Notch Burger stop. I also just read the article in a local business magazine about the guy who owns Top Notch so I thought we would give it a try. With the way that things are in the economy right now I like to feel like I'm getting my monies worth. I figure that prices are so high because they have to pay their employees and post COVID that's been tough, I understand. But this wasn't what I expected. $20 bucks for two burgers and a side of onion rings. I don't have to worry about cheating on my diet to get a burger here, if I want to do that I'll head to In-n-Out. I do all I can to support local businesses but I do want to feel like my visit and my money will get me something I enjoy so much I'll be back. This wasn't it. Char broiled burgers, that remind me of Short Stop, but better. Orders of fries were pretty large and cooked perfectly, like Buddy's. We ordered and sat down and they quickly brought out our orders. We finished and decided to get onion rings, not bad. The only change next time I will skip the onions on the burger, seems to be yellow onions but not toally sure, but they are chopped. We enjoyed the OG Top Notch in Austin and were excited that there is one in Hutto. It's nice that we don't have to go to Austin. The food is pretty decent here. I think we just come here more for nostalgia. The burgers are chargrilled and my favorite on the menu. My husband likes the fried chicken. I got the sweet potato fries for the first time, and I enjoyed them. In fact, I think I like them better than the regular fries. The staff is always nice and friendly. There's always plenty of seating inside. The staff does a great job at keeping tables clean. They have a nice outdoor space, but it's always packed. My son is a chef in Austin, and he and I LOVE Top Notch Burgers, but we have always gone to the Austin location. We decided to try the one in Hutto, which was a big mistake. First let me tell you what we love about the Austin Top Notch. We love that the burgers are flame grilled. We love that the fries are fresh cut. The food has always been phenomenal. The Top Notch in Hutto is clean and the staff is nice, but the burger tastes nothing like the ones we are used to. The fries are commercially prepared and frozen fries. For two burgers and fries it was almost $30. We could have saved time and gas by just going to Burger King for a so-so burger. Better still, my son IS A CHEF and creates a really Top Notch burger at home. We should have stayed at home. Very disappointed. read more

Stop pre-cooking your burger patties!!!! Went there last night and the patties weren't hot enough to melt the cheese. Plus, it's as dry as a hockey puck. i can tell by looking at the patty it is pre cooked. The Top Notch on Burnet cooks them fresh and they taste so much better. Id rather wait a few minutes longer for it to be cooked right, then get a pre cooked burger. Plus, it was 35 bucks for 2 burgers, 2 tater tots and 2 medium drinks. This is the second location for Top Notch, inside the new co-op space in 'downtown' Hutto. Food: Your standard fare with burgers, hot dogs, fries, chicken dinner, shakes and malts. The mixed chicken dinner was so-so. A slightly warmer than room temp wing and thigh served with mash/gravy, coleslaw, and a slice of toast for $11.49. Onion rings were great, as was the burger. Service: Counter-style ordering and you'll pick it up when your name is called. Cost: Mixed chicken dinner, a burger combo, and drink addition ran us about $31 after tax. Overall: Still new and getting up to speed on service and all those details such as keeping up with refilling ketchup and wiping down of tables and making sure orders are correct. We read that this restaurant was having an opening today in Hutto. Couldn't resist a great taste of flame, broiled burgers, and fries and malt. I'm so glad that we stopped by. We were met by the manager with a smile and a lengthy line to order. For good reason, the food was delicious and fresh. Enjoyed all the smiles of the staff that greeted us and served our food. Typical diner style restaurant. The layout was very new. No sign outside yet... we just followed the line of cars into the parking lot. The drive in area was in a busy area but convenient, well maintained and the carhop server was great. The proteins were hot when we received the order. The chicken tender dinner was 3 large tenders, fries and Texas toast. The meat was tender but the batter was flavorless. I wanted to like it because the meat was juicy and didn't appear to be a frozen, over processed, and fried from frozen. They would be fabulous with same seasoning! Dipping sauce didn't do it. The fries were warm but also had no seasoning at all. Skip those. Texas toast was white bread barely toasted. Forgettable. The Longhorn burger was better. More toppings than anything and bun was saturated with sauce. Better flavor than the tenders but not great. Disappointed. read more

What a disappointment. Not even sure where to start. The cashier was so intent on upsetting us I had to repeat our order of literally 4 items 3 times. She was more interested inn what was inn her phone. Had to ask for water cups twice. Nothing but kids hanging out but the kitchen, and every one of them on their phones. Food came and it wasn't hot, barely warm, and the normal charcoal flavor was non existent. No seasoning on the meat. There were only two tables occupied. Wanted to try this place after all the built up hype about it opening. I am not sure if it lived up to my expectations ‍. Might try it again just to make sure since I'm in the area often. The customer service was good, the person taking the order was not happy yo be there but after getting our food and sitting down there were a couple folks walking around and checking on you. They had good attitudes about what they were doing. They get 4stars for that but the food is just ok. My burger was the top pick burger and I had the onions grilled. The burger was nothing special. I'm pretty sure there was cheese on it, just a few shreds. There was way too much sauce that I had to wipe it off the burger with a napkin. The burger itself was just plain, cheap fast food burgers. If I go back I'm trying the chicken or hot dogs. The fries were just plain fries. No salt or seasoning, just seemed like plain fries. I love fries but I didn't even finish these and that's rare. The outside patio is really nice. It is right next to a stage and would be a great spot to watch or listen to any performance. Come on Hutto, lets put this space to use.
