I wish they had clearer instructions for newcomers for the ordering system and breakfast availability. I read through precious Yelp reviews but was still a little confused. The group behind us was confused too. You walk inside, wait in line, order, and they give you an order number/direct you where you'll be seated. You can choose between indoor or outdoor. There are limited shaded areas so be aware of that, especially since the summer weather has been ridiculously hot. There's a little sand pit for kids to play in outside too. I was excited to try the blueberry French toast but apparently that (and everything else on the online breakfast menu) is only offered on the weekends. Their daily breakfast offerings are listed on a small chalk board near the register. The regular French toast I got was still pretty good. The bacon was thick and hearty and the potatoes were unique. I don't eat eggs but my boyfriend said his eggs tasted really fresh. Definitely better than typical breakfast food offered at restaurants/diners, even though they were just typical offerings. The ingredients tasted fresh and the food tasted homemade. Everything came out relatively quickly too, which was nice. We'll try to come back on a weekend. First time here and I'm so happy we came in. The staff is so friendly and accommodating. I was in the mood for pasta with chicken and mentioned that to the staff who said while there was nothing like that on the menu, she said she would check with the chef and get back to me. Sure enough she can back and said the chef had a fresh Gouda and wanted to make me a grilled chicken with Gouda macaroni and cheese. When it was prepared the chef himself brought it out with a fresh order of personal version of cheese bread, melted Gouda in warm toasted bread! Needless to say both offerings were outstanding. First timers here so this is for folks who've never been here before. The way this restaurant/cafe works is just bizarre. You enter and someone points to menus and says "grab your menus and order at the counter". Okay...so we do. We order our breakfasts with coffee and I was given a coffee mug. What was I supposed to do with it? Then the printed receipt came and like other reviewers mentioned, I don't enjoy looking at the tip section when I wasn't even waited on so we put down the standard 20%. What a joke as you'll find out. So we're told to sit by table number 26 near the Chaps sign. "You'll see it". Huh? Where? So someone points to the inside of the restaurant so we go looking for table numbers. You don't get seated. We're sitting there waiting for my coffee for about 10 minutes and no coffee, no wait staff. Again, this is weird. I get up and start looking around and find a single coffee carafe and then realized it was self-serve like a gas station. Would have been nice to have been told this when I paid for it. Oh well, at least I got coffee, right? Well, the coffee was awful, IMO. Next came our food. I got the chicken fried steak, he got the cougar gold omelette and we split the buckwheat pancake. The only reason why it's a 2 star and not a 1 Star was because of his omelette which was fantastic. My CFS was just pure horrendous, kinda like eating school cafeteria food. The batter was thick, super fried and hard and the meat was tasteless. There goes my $14.00. As for the buckwheat pancake, how can you mess up pancakes? Well, they did. Pancakes are supposed to be soft and tender. Our's had a thick layer on the bottom so you couldn't cut it with a fork. I had to use a knife to cut it. At no time did a wait staff come over to ask about our meal. You have to get up and grab your own doggie box. So as I said earlier, what's the point of tipping when no one waits on you. Now I know. I will give this place another try one day. The omelette was that good but not much else. At least I know it's not your standard restaurant where they have wait staff so I won't be disappointed in their service. read more

This morning, my wife and I had breakfast here for the first time. It was very busy, but the staff was attentive on checking with us. We shared an order of the Blueberry Muffin French Toast; two big slices of blueberry muffin done as French toast with whipped cream cheese and blueberry topping. The muffin was warm and moist and very delicious with the topping. There were country potatoes, perfectly cooked and with an excellent seasoning. I've been here several times. They are kind of out of the way for me, but it's not too far and it's definitely worth it. I think on weekends they have live music. Service is always great! They're usually nice people. One time my friend's daughter asked if she could have a candy cane from the Christmas tree. They said she couldn't, but instead gave her a giant candy cane stick instead. She was so happy! I am a huge fan of their turkey pot pie! I think it's the best pot pie in town. It's chunky with copious amounts of shredded turkey. On top sits a flaky pastry and their pastries are so good! It comes with a salad made of greens, craisins, candied pecans, light crumble of cheese and raspberry vinaigrette. If you idea of a great place for breakfast on a Saturday, consists of an over priced high school cafeteria, than this is you place. We stood in line for over 30 minutes to order and pay, then we sat at the table for another 20 minutes to get our food. The place has been here for 15 years and I would say they have not cleaned it in that time. The coffee was good, the lemon sugar cook was awesome (hence the 2 stars) but the food was lackluster and poorly cooked. My sunny side up eggs had solid yokes as did my wife's over medium eggs. They forgot to season the chicken fried steak and the gravy. The food looks great, until you dig in. I have had better food at a truck stop. All together, I would not recommend this place for breakfast, the sweets seem pretty good if you want to wait in line for half an hour. read more

I am a sucker for interior/exteriors restaurants and this place was just so unique with their decorations. I enjoyed the food as much as I enjoyed how they had decorated the restaurant. Food: I ordered the bulldog burger and it was HUGE ! It has a pretty thick beef patty and bacon so I had to cut it up just to be able to eat it. I ordered a salad with the burger instead of the fries and it was a typical cesar salad but a bit too soggy for my liking. Drinks: I ordered a mimosa which was pretty pricey ($12) but it was tasty and would order it again. They espresso machines so you can order lattes, italian soda and of course regular coffee. I also tried their regular coffee and it was so good that i had 4 cups before leaving. Service: You order your food and beverages at the counter there is not much interaction with the staff. WOW. Have been wanting to try Chaps for weeks, and finally made the time this weekend for brunch. If I could give this spot 10 stars, I would! The food was fantastic, the atmosphere was cozy and warm, and the staff were all kind and quick to grab whatever a customer needed. I had the Custard Oatmeal as I had send some local Spokane influencers say that this is the best oatmeal they've ever had (so obviously I had to put it to the test)...can they could not be more correct. It tastes as though it has been cooking for hours with strong flavors of brown sugar, warm milk and tart berries. I got to try a bite of my friend's blueberry muffin French toast which had the most delicious creamy topping and blueberry sauce, as well as my other friend's hot and home-y scramble. New owner still using the same system of order and pay at the counter, you are assigned a table number which you will look for in a large restaurant. One cashier, and 22 people waiting in line (I counted). After a 20 minute wait in line, someone is already sitting at my assigned seat. No big deal. Food arrives almost warm, same recipes as previous owners used but less food by about 15%. Prices are higher by approximately 2 to 4 dollars per dish. Would not have minded getting less and paying more too much if it had been served hot, and not have waited in that line. They could use an extra cashier, and just do away with having someone bringing the food, they provide little to no service, just call a number we'll pick it up, bring it to any table hot, plus I wouldn't feel obligated to leave a tip for basically no service. It's a cliche but unfortunately when a restaurant changes ownership it gets worse not better. read more

We stumbled upon this place on a work trip to Spokane and can't say enough great things about Chaps. For starters this place is absolutely beautiful! We came on a Wednesday morning and it was packed, which is always a good sign. You wait in line and the host assigns a table for your party while you wait in line to order food. They have this system down very well and it made for an easy stress-free ordering process. Warning: If you come in hungry you're going to be tempered to get ALL of their pastries, we drooled over them as we waited in line. We caved for a maple scone and it was perfect! So was the rest of the food that we ordered: blueberry French toast and the Florentine eggs Benedict as well as a chai -which the lady at the counter said it would be the best one I'd ever have and she wasn't wrong! This place is a little hidden gem of Spokane and a must try if you're in town! The lady at the counter also happened to be the owner and stopped by our table as we ate and let us know her French toast is her grandmother's recipe and we were delighted to know so much love goes into this place. My boyfriend was very excited to take me here when I came into town so it was sad that I find this establishment just okay. The ambiance definitely deserves more stars if it's based on that alone. When you walk in you first get in line to place your order. A waiter chooses a table for you and gives you a number to look for after you had place your order. The Bataan Death March of Brunch we arrived at cafe at about 10:45am and the line was pretty long the ladies I was with assured me that although the line appeared to be very long, that they were a pretty speedy bunch and it shouldn't be more than 20 mins. This line zig and zagged for miles like a drunk Meth zombie in heat. Once we finally ordered and sat down at a table at 12:15pm PST the food got out fairly quick and was pretty good. But, once the food was dropped off that was the last time an employee would interact with our table or even make eye contact. To be honest even if that chicken fried steak gave me the most mind blowing beej of my life, I would still never consider coming back here again.. and we are outside and there were more flies out here than a fucking dumpster. I really like Chaps for a lot of reasons. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, the baked goods are exceptionally good. No matter where you sit inside or out it's a lovely place to be for a light meal or a coffee and a special treat. Today I went to lunch with a friend to celebrate her birthday. We chose to sit inside at a cozy table by the window where we could watch the birds in the bushes outside. We each choose something on the menu that we thought would be appetizing. I certainly was not disappointed with my fish tacos: lots and lots of different kinds of flavor--sweet-and-sour and salty and spicy. The corn tortillas were very flavorful. She chose the mac & cheese for lunch. She was somewhat disappointed that most of the bacon in the dish was not sufficiently cooked to her taste. She did concede, however, that she will only eat bacon if it has been very very well done and you usually have to let Chef know ahead of time for that to happen. But we both were annoyed and distracted by flies that kept buzzing around our table. Remember we chose to sit inside. Remember we chose to sit inside. I travel to Spokane twice a year and every time I go I make a list of the places I want to eat out- this used to always make the list. I loved Chaps. The decor is gorgeous and the menu is absolutely delicious. It was the perfect place to brunch. However, the service has gradually completely soured how I feel about it. The last 4/5 times I've been here for breakfast, the staff has been unforgivably rude and painfully passive aggressive for no apparent reason. It's been bad enough that the magical experience I used to have at this breakfast restaurant is longer there. The owner used to have a pretty diverse group of people working for her, but now they are all Caucasian, mostly male, hipsters. That could have something to do with it.
