This place is super cool on the inside and the employees were all very friendly. My son and I both had the chicken fried steak. We agreed that the gravy was really thin and had a clam chowder like taste. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the hash browns were good. I also got a pretty solid latte. What I couldn't stand about this place is the business model. You stand in line to order (25 minutes for us on a Saturday morning). Then they assign you a table and deliver your food, think Carl's Jr. So, you better order everything you want or think you might want, otherwise you're waiting in another 25 minute line. I also don't like the whole pay first concept. I have no idea how to tip when I haven't tasted the food or experienced the service. Anyway, this is enough for us to not return. Id probably give closer to a 3.5 rating. Because I want to like this place so much more because the atmosphere is amazing and beautiful and the food has so much potential. The things that I love are watching my grandma enjoy their desserts (I think she had the triple layered lemon cake most recently) and the quality of the ingredients. I've been here at least 10 times (for dinner only) and every time have experienced more than one inconvenience or annoyance with both food and service. Whether it's flavorless gravy, wrong prices on the menu or incorrectly cooked steak. Service is sub par. 6/10 they were happy to accommodate my food allergies. Meh, I hate speaking so negatively but I also noticed some slight unprofessionalism amongst employees. Yet, I continue to come here because I have high hopes. :) Plus Spokane's options are sparse. Amazing food! I ordered the scramble each time I went (Went twice in a row). The menu is pretty small but there's something everyone will like. Although I was disappointed that they don't accept vertical IDs which I found odd and have never encountered. Being the oldest person in the group and trying to get a mimosa was embarrassing. We used to love Chaps. But the last few visits have been horrible. The owner needs to be more aware of the food that is leaving the kitchen. Last three visits....BURNT bacon, BURNT hash browns and runny eggs whites in an over medium order of eggs. We said something this last time and was accommodated but the waitress specifically came back to get the burnt bacon and hash browns. We thought that was extremely tacky. Please do better Chaps. This was our first visit to Chaps. We stopped in for breakfast on our way to Spokane. The seating process was a little confusing, as it is unlike any restaurant we have been to. You must be "seated" by a hostess without actually making your way to the assigned table - instead, the hostess gives you a table number, which you must remember while you stand in line to order. When you reach the front of the line, you tell the cashier your table number, give them your order and obtain your drinks, pay, then make your way to the assigned table... if you can find it. We had to flag down the hostess to ask where the table assigned to us was located. The food was slow coming out of the kitchen - we waited about 20 minutes. The breakfast wrap I ordered was delicious, but had too much egg (no biggie, I just pulled some of it out). The orange juice was room temperature. Glasses of ice water were waiting at the table when we got there. The pastries were fresh and tasty. I think I'll try Chaps again sometime. read more

I snapped a whole photoshoot of Chap's before I could even look at the menu. This place ooooozes with stylish rustic cuteness. Like a little mountain cabin in the middle of a shopping center, I wanted to stay here all day and soak up the vintage homeyness. Tons of sunny outdoor seating, or spacious indoor seating, depending on the weather. Honestly though, I think the ambiance deserves more stars than the food. Pastries & coffee are a solid bet, but my Spanish omelet was lacking. Among the smorgasbord of pastries on the counter, we asked which one was the most amazing. The apple fritter is the "best in town" we were told. Sadly, I thought it was overrated, crusty on the outside but dry on the inside. I'd go with the chocolate babka next time. Fresh flowers on our table complimented the tasty biscuits and gravy with roasted potatoes. The half order was $6.50 and so flavorful! Came here for brunch a few weekends ago and was swept off my feet. Even with a large crowd and long line waiting to order on a Sunday morning, we were still seated quickly and didn't have to wait long for our food. They have the best biscuits and gravy ever. Not too spicy but not too bland. The biscuits boast the perfect flakiness. And their roasted potatoes could not have been more perfect. Again, well balanced spices made for an mouthwatering accompaniment. The selection of pastry items was impressive. I tried the pumpkin french toast which was also delicious and very, very rich. The chorizo omlet was another great pick. I could have ordered one of everything on the menu, it was so hard to choose. Plus, the decor is delightful. Upscale vintage paired with country charm just makes for the nicest environment...not too shabby chic but definitely not overly pretentious either. Loved the blend of styles. A real shame. I wanted this place to be great. Didn't know much going in, liked the environment (charming). Very disappointed. Service was meger to non-existing. Once they have your order, you're to find seat and that's about the extent of it. I ordered thick french toast (bacon & potatoes with), and 2eggs, some sasauge a la carte. What they brought was cake and no syrup. Who eats french toast with out syrup? Likewise, when the busser brought the food he said, they were out of sasauge and they had given me more bacon instead. Why would you give someone who has bacon already, more bacon to replace sasauge? All they had to do was ask. Even toast (hint...hint, french toast) would have been better. I feel a bit ripped off. Considering all that I'd heard about Chaps, I must admit that I was pretty let down. While I understand that most people find the rustic decor charming, I found that torn chairs and wobbly bench to be extremely uncomfortable. A lady sat opposite me on the bench and I nearly teeter-tottered onto the floor. The menu is scant, with few options. The prices are a little high for what you get, and the service was a 6 at best. It's odd to order at the counter and have to include your tip BEFORE you get service...doesn't leave much for the server/busser to work for. A few little things that are annoying - it was extremely difficult to get a coffee or water refill without getting up and getting it yourself. Wouldn't have been a bother if the place weren't so busy. The pluses - the food was tasty, and the coffee is phenomenal. Bumpercrop provides the well-roasted beans and the drip is well worth a few refills! I would try it again, but I can't say it's the best breakfast in town.... read more

We decided to try one of Guy Fieri's highlighed restaurants. I'm not a big fan of breakfast, but it just seems like there are vast breakfast offerings in Spokane (in addition to bars). So we hit the road and ventured south of the city. It was a short drive by Los Angeles standards. Chaps is located in a small strip mall, but it is pretty easy to find. It looks like a converted house, but when you get inside it looks like a tea house on the left an a school house on the right. We sat on the school house side. I was enamored with the attention to detail with the decorations. I was also happy to sit near the fire, which kept me warm, This is one of those places where you order at the register an they bring your items to your table. There is a nice coffee and tea bar with reusable cups. You can serve your own water into mason jars. The wait staff is very attention and available to assist with all of your needs. I ordered the sausage and egg breakfast with only one egg. It came with breakfast potatoes and wheat toast. All yummy. My mom would have love the sausage as it was a patty and not the traditional round sausage. It was an incredible amount of food. My companion ordered the skillet scramble. He liked it, but I would have definitely ordered the gravy on the side. The thing was smothered in gravy, and I was not a fan of the gravy. These breakfasts were surely something to bulk you up for the winter and put some meat on your bones. At the cash register, there were some delightful looking pastries. There is also a full lunch menu. Everything was perfect expect for one narcissistic woman at the table next to us. She literally jibber jabbered the whole time. Such a find! This place was recommended to me by one of my professors. I ordered a cinnamon roll with a side of bacon and two eggs. Everything was wonderful! The bacon was thick and cooked perfectly! You get three pieces for only $3! Really cheap compared to some places. Cinnamon roll was fabulous and they use cream cheese frosting :D This is one of those places where you order first and then they seat you, so no matter how many you have in your party there will more than likely be a wait. I discovered this hidden Spokane gem after living here almost 3 years and I'm so glad I did! It's in an odd location - next to Yoke's and right off the highway - but once inside you're transported to another world. It's an old house that seems as if it was dropped in the parking lot of a grocery store and everything from the front yard to the upstairs bedrooms magically transformed into quaint spaces decorated with an old French farmhouse flair. The decor is incredibly charming, timeless and elegant with many photo ops; the food is well presented and delicious; and the drip coffee tasted great! This is a lovely spot for coffee, brunch or lunch. As other reviewers have said, the oatmeal is to die for...apparently the owner's grandmother's secret recipe. Also had a plain croissant which was huge, buttery and flaky. The cookies are big enough to feed 4 people. And the coffee...I don't know what it is about Spokane coffee but every cup we had this visit, in every venue was fabulous - smooth and never bitter. The same is true at Chaps. They have a beautiful garden patio for dining - we ate inside but it looks inviting. The secret sauce for this place though is the kindness and warmth of the people who work here.
