One of the BEST Chinese restaurants in SGV. Period. We've been going to Chang's for years now. True, they're not the CHEAPEST Chinese rest around. But if you want GREAT Chinese food with efficient service, it's hard to beat Chang's. Too often good Chinese restaurants come and go. Staying Power is not one of its virtues. I think a lot of Chinese owners open restaurants to make a quick buck, then 6 months down the road when you go back, you realize the food has changed along with the owners and help staff.
Chang's is NOT that type of place. Mary, the manager (and maybe co-owner?) runs one helluva TIGHT ship at Chang's. Just one glance from her at one of her waiters and they will jump at will. Wait staff is hardly ever doodlin' around. The place is rarely less than BZ (a good sign of its food) and the wait staff is hopping around to keep their customers happy. Hardly the food ever arrives less than piping hot, one of THE "Pet Peeves" of Chinese customers -- gotta have their grub PIPIN' HOT or else HELL will break loose !!
Standout dishes include: "Spareribs in Lotus Leaves" (surprisingly spicy for a Shanghai dish). The Seaweed Fried Fish Fritters (a GOTTA-HAVE ) which has become THE one dish all customers seem to LOVE at Chang's. 9 out of 10 times, this dish arrives looking like it's been soaking in oil for hours, but it's done with a light touch at Changs. There's hardly any oil on the serving plate when the fish is all gone, and it ALWAYS gets eaten up in a frenzy when it arrives at our table. It seems to be THE one dish that is at EVERY table whenever we go to Chang's. Yes, it's THAT good ! The house special Dan Dan Noodles is bland looking, but very HOT if you gotta have your Sichuan fix in a Shanghai restaurant. The Stir Fried Tofu with Beef and Scallions is DELISH ! The tofu is not the soft kind, but fermented and hard, which makes it very suitable for stir frying. This dish is one of my faves at Chang's and goes very well with a hot bowl of rice. If you're on a non-carb diet, be forewarned the Stir Fried Tofu with Beef almost requires some rice to make it wash down nicely. If you're REALLY hungry, go for the Sizzling Rice with Ham and Greens (another Shanghai specialty dish), which arrives -- you guessed it -- SIZZLING in a casserole clay pot. The portion is HUGE and we always have enough left over for a doggie bag. It tastes even more delish the next day when you reheat it b/c the rice has soaked up the flavors from the ham and greens. Yum!
Contrary to what many have recommended, I do not think their "Tung Po Pork" or the requisite Shanghai pork shank dish is one of the standouts. Other Shanghai restaurants in SGV, such as the equally superb "Shanghai Restaurant" on 2nd floor of Tong Lin Plaza or even "Great Shanghai", both on Valley Blvd in San Gabriel, have a big edge over Chang's on this dish. Tung Po Pork is a great test of the chef's skill. It starts from meat selection to cooking time and the degree of heat used to cook the pork. For some reason, this dish arrives looking like a Poor Man's Pork Shank at Chang's. The color is pale and the meat is surprisingly overdone. But their waiters ALWAYS recommend this dish. Well, we learned to say "No" on this one. Madame Sung's Fish Chowder is also overrated. There are few dishes to avoid at Changs, but def the Tung Po Pork. Stay away from that one.
There are two party rooms in the back for special gatherings or for more privacy. Make sure you reserve your room EARLY b/c this place is BZ, and justifiably so. Tables are situated with just enough elbow room between guests. It's not overly tight, but I wouldn't call it spacious either. As a nice touch, they have a large Plasma TV hooked up on the wall that is usually tuned to ESPN or CNN. So if you gotta have your news with your meal......If you do decide to go on Friday or Saturday nite, be prepared to wait up to 45 mins for a table. The parking lot also gets crowded b/c it's shared with other stores in the strip mall and a large grocery market.
We've tried so many Chinese restaurants and always make a point to go to Chang's once a month for good food. They've maintained their level of consistency in their food and service, which is almost a rarity these days among Chinese restaurants in SGV. Chang's has earned their stripes for sure. read more
