I ordered three things from Uber Eats. General Tso's Chicken, Beef Wrap, and, Beef Noodle Soup. I was excited to try the heavily-touted beef wrap. Everything was delicious except the beef wrap was bland, barely had hoisin, and, the beef shank they used was mostly inedible, tough parts of the shank. Little hidden gem in a strip mall..... aren't most hidden gems located in strip malls though... ?! Pretty sure that was what Jonathan Gold said and he knew his food gem locations ! They are currently running their regular menu and a ghost kitchen menu out of the location (the ghost kitchen menu is dumplings, noodles, rice bowls, and bao) Needed a last minute no wait time spot to eat at with the family and this place did not disappoint. Came here with my family and had a decent experience. We arrived around 5pm on a Sunday and were seated immediately. When we left around 6:30pm, there was a line by the door. We ordered the tea duck, which was decent. It came with buns (similar to how Peking duck comes with thin wrappers) and was decently sized. We also ordered the XLB, which, for some reason, was the last of our items to arrive. We had to follow up with 2 different waitresses before we finally received them. They were pretty standard; nothing mind-blowing. We ordered a noodle dish as well (ja jiang mian) which was probably the worst of all the items. The noodles and toppings were mediocre, the sauce was bland, and there wasn't enough sauce, so a good chunk of the noodles were left flavorless. Finally, we ordered the lettuce cups. They were decent but nothing you couldn't easily make at home. The filling had shrimp, radish, and what seemed to be chopped up fried donuts (you tiao). It's been 2 yrs since I visited my aunt in SoCal, she recommended Chang's Garden. We order Dong Po Pork, spicy bean souce fish and stir-fry snow pea leaf since we only had 3 ppl. I can't say I was wowed but IMO the food is not bad because I haven't had much of this Hong-Zhou style Chinese cuisine in recent years. However, My aunt was not happy when paying the bill, she had an issue with how the staff handle her credit card transaction that took more time than it should. It wasn't busy at the time when we dined, perhaps the wait staff needed more training and also she found it really strange where the cc machine wasn't place in a spot where she can clearly see what the staff is doing. She recently had to deal unauthorized charge on her cc so it's understandable how she is quite concern. Hopefully the owner/manager can address her concern in the future. Really nice staff who accommodated our party of six with a complementary hot sour soup and when they noticed we were celebrating a birthday, gave us a free red bean dessert. Pretty good service that is hard to get in a post-COVID world of limited staffing. We enjoyed the food. The beef roll has cucumber in it which makes it more refreshing and crunchy. The pineapple shrimp wasn't drowning in mayo so it stayed crispy. There is outdoor seating available. The private room can seat two tables, about 20-24 people. I am guessing either that they didn't wash the vegetable thoroughly before cooking or maybe the food dropped on the floor and they picked it up and still packed it. Either wsy, it's sicknening! Haven't been back for awhile but recent attempts both disappointed me. Service was great as usual (for all the stars) but something probably changed in the past few months. Not sure if they hired a new cook or what. The rice doesn't appear as fresh and some dishes have meat not fully cooked. The veggies are cut into very rough slices and worse than panda express. Hopefully things would change in the future and better usage of proper ingredients to return to its past flavor. No, it is not my first few experience. I want to start off by giving the Chang's Garden a HUGE SHOUTOUT. We celebrated my wife's birthday and had a party of 12 people! Staff was safe and upheld COVID regulations and social distancing. The staff was really nice and accommodating! The food is hands down fire! My wife and I are a big foodies and we loved everything we ordered. Lunch special is not bad for this Chinese restaurant. My son loves coming here and he's 18mos old. He loves eating the hot and sour soup - I fish out the tofu and egg from it. He also loves the garlic spinach, beef with green onion or triple delight (shrimp, chicken and beef with green onion). The food is decent, price is just like any Chinese restaurant lunch special menu. I give it 3 stars because we come here almost once a wk when we go to the mall but find the food's taste and preparation inconsistent. If you're not that picky with food and it's your first time, it's worth trying. Drive a long way to get this after seeing them prepare some sweet and sour pork. The women who work here were very polite but the food took a little longer than the 15 minutes they quoted us. No biggie, I get it. Friday night. It was good, not amazing, but good. I was slightly disappointed with the beef roll. I work at yogurtland LMFAOO I'm their next door neighbor, ANYWAYS, The first time I went there I got spicy beef noodle soup and i had high expectations because this restaurant and mei mei's restaurant is always packed! My boyfriend and I loved the spicy beef noodle soup! It's a must try, I got it to go and honestly the portions are shareable with at least another person. I went back because I was so impressed with the beef noodle soup that I ordered that, wonton in red oil sauce? ( spicy wonton, in their menu it reads wonton in hot sauce or hot oil sauce LOL ) , and their beef roll! Overall, I would rate this place 3.5 stars. The service here was good (3.5 stars) and the dishes came out fairly quickly. What you'll find here are northen Chinese style cooking/flavors. And, the decor is what you would expect at a nicer asian seafood restaurant, hence the prices will reflect that too. The pork spare ribs wrapped in lotus leaf was my favorite. The pork was tender and flavorful! A must get! The drunken chicken was a popular dish to order and did not disappoint. The catfish in garlic sauce topped with tofu was mediocre only because the fish did not taste fresh. I liked the tofu more than the fish itself. I did not like their green onion pancake - it was too oily and a bit dry on some parts. I enjoyed their rice ball soup dessert and recommend that you save room for that! Not too much to say about this place, I had been hesitant to go back after my first time here as i remembered it as being blan Shanghainese food but it may have just been the company we were keeping at the time and those of whom ordered the food that visit. This time it was good, not great but good, again likely because of the people I came here with this time....yeah you guessed it White People. I ordered the green onion pancake and seaweed fish which were both very good and to my liking. My one friend ordered Suchian Beef to which I replied "this is not really a Suchian restaurant but ok." It turned out to be very good and pretty authentic in flavor just not very spicy. The others had some shrimp fried rice and some house noodle thing that they all liked but bored the shit outta me. They also ordered "MuShu pork" which Deb always asks me what it is and says that its not Chinese when ever we go out and see peeps order it. Food was good, but in all honestly, it was a bit pricier than other places with the same quality. I prefer May Mei a couple stores down. Cold Jellyfish appetizer- Dry and bland XLB- Delicious Wor Wonton soup- Yum, but more than I would typically pay Beef rolls- Needed more sauce and the pancake was a little doughy $38 total without tip. Read a small description of the Shanghai style food at Chang's and decided to give it a try. I ordered the Long Jin (Dragon Well) Shrimp which was stir fried with a very light, transparent ,cornstarch thickened sauce that just coated the shrimp with some green tea leaves added in for a fresh herbal effect. This is a very subtle dish which tries to emphasize the taste of the shrimp, but since you can't expect the highest quality shrimp at $16 a plate, what could have been a masterful dish could not be attained. (I can imagine this dish done with Santa Barbara Sweet Shrimp for magnificent effect, but the price would be astronomical.) I also ordered the Steamed Pork Spare Ribs in Lotus Leaf. It comes 4 to an order for $14. At the beginning you only see cylindrical objects wrapped in lotus leaf, and as you unroll the leaf, sweet, sticky Mochi rice envelops the bony spare ribs. The surprise ingredient is the Mochi rice which adds a stick to the ribs dimension to this dish. The rice had absorbed the marinating sauce that flavored the ribs so this dish has strong fermented soybean flavors, salt, pork fat, and five spice. I ate one of the round " logs", and having eaten the Long Jin Shrimp with rice previously, I was totally full. This dish is one to eat toward the end of the meal if you still feel slightly hungry since eating this will definitely satiate you. The food here doesn't seem to have the "wow" factor. The food is good, but certainly not memorable. Apparently, according to Eat LA, there is a fold out menu written in Chinese which specializes in Hangzhou regional cuisine as cooked in a well known restaurant called Louwailou. That may be the claim to culinary fame at Chang's Garden which I will have to try at some other date. read more

We came here on Easter Sunday with the family, and enjoyed a delicious lunch. If it's one thing I discovered, it's that I can't seem to go more than a couple weeks without eating some type of Chinese food. Because Chinese restaurants in OC don't compare to those in SG Valley, I'll always make an effort to cook some Chinese food at home after hitting up the local Ranch 99. I can't help it, it's in my blood. With a party of six, we ordered a good amount of food. Dishes included the usual beef noodle soup, roasted duck, a shrimp dish stir fried in garlic, and the juicy pork dumplings (xiao long bao). Everything tasted okay, but nothing earth shattering. I've actually had better beef noodle soup down in Irvine, and the xiao long bao don't even compare to Din Tai Fung around the corner. The two dishes that stood out in my mind were the seaweed fried fish and the lotus leaf wrapped rice and spare rib. The fish looks like something that the Incredible Hulk would conjure up, with dark green veins running through the light and crispy fried batter. Once you take a bite, you can taste the piping hot white fish inside. Fresh, well-seasoned, and bursting with flavor, I couldn't get enough of the stuff. In any other lotus wrapped dish, you would normally just find some sticky rice inside, and that's about it. Well this version has the sticky rice, and a juicy, fat, pork spare rib waiting for you inside. Meaty and flavorful, you do have to be cognizant of the slight oily-ness of it all. This is a really affordable lunch spot! The three of us ordered four dishes with rice and soup for $50 pre-tip. Four stars because the smoked tea duck with a Peking duck presentation had a lot of bones in it-usually only the meat is served so you can make little buns with it directly. Also, I felt as if the rice was blatantly someone else's leftovers in the pot-it looked like it was scooped around in. The menu features some classic shanghai dishes as well as dimsum and more Americanized dishes. It has pictures too which is helpful for guests who are familiar with the names. The lunch specials all come with rice and soup, and we were able to substitute the daily soup for another on the menu. Maybe it's just me ... but all things considered, the menu pricing at Chang's Garden appears to be surprisingly on the high side for a Chinese restaurant. Some might simply write this off as merely a byproduct of the relatively high median income of Arcadians, but Tasty Garden is right across the street, and the average pricing of dishes on their menu seems to be on the lower side. In any case, pricing aside, Chang's Garden is not a bad place to dine at. The level of customer service here seems to be above-average for a Chinese restaurant, and the food tastes great. I am particularly fond of their jellyfish, green onion pancakes, Shanghai rice cakes, Shanghai spare ribs, and pineapple shrimp with mayonnaise. The parking lot seems to be chronically packed, so consider yourself lucky if you are able to find a free spot without having to circle around repeatedly like a vulture looking for carrion. Chang's Garden has the best Shanghainese food in the SVG and great service to boot. Admittedly, the fact that I speak the local dialect probably helps, but still... I've been here with my family numerous times. We even "rented out" the back room for my son's 100 day birthday party. There is not a dish here that disappoints. For our past visit we ordered the Shanghai short ribs, beef with onions, shredded pork chow mein, and green onion pancakes. If you want absolutely delicious, flavorful, hit-the-spot authentic Chinese food, this is it. Everything just tastes so fresh. Even the dishes that are pan-fried, you don't taste any heaviness of the oil. The meat is so tender and finely prepared it practically melts in your mouth. There is a sweetness to a lot of dishes here which Shanghainese food is known for but they don't overdo it. I love it! The waitresses are so friendly and attentive. They brought over plastic bowls, utensils and a booster seat for our toddler without us even asking. They checked up on us. They refilled our drinks. They actually came by and tried to play with our kids. They even packed us extra rice to go with our leftovers. This is not the cheapest Chinese restaurant around but in my opinion, worth the money. Jelly fish (4 stars) - Au89 always tells me jelly fish made by him or his mom tastes so good but mine always come out too blech. Seeing the good reviews for this prompted me to order the appetizer. Unfortunately I'm the only fan on our table. It was great, with a hint of green onions, sesame oil and maybe sugar for a bit of sweetness. Beef rolls (4 stars) - Wow. Really good! I only gave 4 stars though because it's pretty sparse inside. The roll looks big and the wrap is pretty thin but if you flatten the whole thing, it'll shrink from 2 inches to 1/2 inch in thickness. Xia Long Bao (4 stars) - Juicy, good flavor, wrap to meat ratio is good. Fried eggplant (3 stars) - The flavor is okay, a bit on the mushy, and the presentation ... Well. Let's say I expected it to come out like a flattened whole eggplant and not a whole pile of mushy dark looking stuff. Fried rice (2 stars) - Not too much egg in it, nor meat, nor seasoning. Sauteed spinach (2 stars) - Bland. Parking was okay. It's in a shopping area and at 7:30 PM on a friday night, I was able to find parking pretty fast. I was pretty disappointed. I usually give reviews when I love places , but I write this in hopes the restaurant may read it and improve. I ordered thru GrubHub and was pleasantly surprised when my order was ready and at my house within 30 minutes. I ordered the TanTan Noodles, Chicken Chow Mein and the Chicken fried rice. The food as very bland, incredibly oily and one of the chicken pieces was undercooked in the fried rice.
