The thing that stands out the most about this place is the red lighting, once you acclimate yourself you notice all of their decorations. It's kind of like cinco de mayo all year around. Oh Cha Cha... What can I say? I LOVE the decor as always. Wherever you must walk down a flight of steps to get to, usually has a good "hidden scene" vibe to it. And it's a good place to enjoy your cheap beer and relax after a show or work (or both!) Bartenders always been friendly to me. This lounge is definitely an industry bar. Which is a part of their charm and their downfall. Most of the people around you are people who just got off working behind the bar OR are enjoying their day off so you know the conversations will be legit. It's honestly a hit or miss on the crowd though. I have been here where people are not so friendly and very clique-ish but it's the same everywhere on the hill. Go on a Wednesday or Thursday around 6pm when no one is there and they play Frank Sinatra. I love the lucha libre (mexican wrestler) theme. When visited, I caught a glimpse of multiple local musicians each performing and the bar area was perfect in diameter to host such an event. The dual bar between Cha Cha and Bimbo's is brilliant - you can bounce back and forth depending on how claustrophobic you get. My experience at the Cha varies greatly depending on the people I'm with. The bar itself rates from blah to mehh to yuck. It's safe to just order beer, but cocktails -- don't even think about it. Especially when it's super busy and packed. + The red light helps make most people look better, which is definitely an advantage sometimes. + The foosball table helps in situation when you just have nothing to talk about or it's too loud to really have a conversation. + The back smoking 'cage' area is a nice plus for smokers like me. __But it's small, cramped, and ghetto looking. To all the out-of-towners/ dbags who are starting to frequent this place-- and you know what I'm talking about: the khaki, clean cut white (and popped) collared men with their annoying, Louboutin wearin counterparts -- Stop ordering shots of jager and PBR! Who the hell drinks jager? Nearly certain that all of cap hill despises Jager and YOU! And just because you order a PBR with your jager does it make you cool/hip/in-the-moment. Nasty ass! Yeah, I agree...if you can't stand the "hipster" vibe get the fuck out! Go to a bar in Belltown or UW District. Quit complaining about the people or the crowd that go here and write a real review on the type of service you receive, how good your drink was, the staff, the music, the ambiance. I wear tight jeans, I have bangs, I have a couple of tattoos, and I happen to walk around with a bit of a pretentious vibe under my belt. So fucking what. Not returning to this place. The bartenders are rude and disrespectful. I get that you deal with loud drunk people all the time, but what happened here went too far. My friend got a little too drunk. At the end of the night, I took her to close her tab. As she was closing out, she began yelling at one of the bartenders. I stepped in and tried to difuse the situation and helped get her out of the bar. She told me that as she was talking to the bartender, he got mad at her and wrote something on her arm. We looked, and written on it was "You're Drunk." I was shocked to see that a complete stranger would do that to a patron of the establishment, even if they were drunk. Appalling. Never coming back. This place wasn't as hilarious as the last stop, but a highly worthy addition to the evening. The bizarre decor of tiki bar meets mexican souvenir factory after a hurricane was interesting and laughable both. The gruff bartenders, that look like hipster versions of the cast of Grizzly Adams, were either really strung out, on wellbutrin, or actually androids. In any case, they had no personalities whatsoever. One thing in particular that we talked about was the glasses. If you are standing and you order a cheapassed beer, you get it in a plastic cup like you were at someones house party. If you are seated and ask for a beer, you get a plastic glass like you might find in a 1970s kitchen. If you order something not a beer, you get a regular glass. Weird. The whole Cha Cha experience was very thoroughly weird. I hear that They (you know, the all powerful Them That Do Things) are going to remodel this place with a bulldozer soon. No matter if it's raining or hailing, light or dark, there's only one color for this dungeonous paradise: Red. With masks adorning the walls and a cabana serving drinks, you've just arrived at the trippiest bar in all of Seattle. The drinks are awesome (they have the El Hefe Hale Brewery Heffeweisen on tap). Several books in one where final outcomes were determined by choice, these books would provide endless hours of entertainment. To follow the cat turn to page three. To ignore the cat turn to page five. Thanks to the Cha Cha Lounge I can relive the pleasure and joy those Choose Your Own Adventure books once provided. The Cha Cha lounge is a Choose Your Own Adventure book come to life. Always amused by the ebb and flow of patrons, I am happy to be in a place where all walks of life collide and mesh over strong cheap drinks. The bar is quite the sociologic delight. Granted some people may want a drink and relax. I wouldn't recommend Cha Cha for such motives. The stereo alone hinders comfortable conversation. Cha Cha is a see and be seen kind of place for the ironic set, the meet-up pre/post gig set, and the trust fund set. One can easily determine who comes in to test the waters and who regularly laps the channel at Cha Cha. The bar is also a great opportunity to entertain oneself and their friends who are of the same mindset. Choose the appropriate attitude or create an avatar for the night and dive on in. The anti-discrimination warning in red latex letters near the door is reserved for the obvious no-no's but will not prohibit one from staring or mocking the apparel choices of the patrons...thank God. Laugh it up. All the outfits one would die of shame if anyone ever caught them in after the trend died twenty years or so ago are on display nightly. The clothes are just as laughable now as they were then and perhaps even funnier since the one modeling the outfit actually hunted it down. It's been a while and we should all know better now, but anyway, it is all part of the fun and without it Cha Cha would be so very lame. Cha Cha can be the joke that falls flat or the one that has the audience rolling. To get the joke open the door. To ignore the joke pop on over to Linda's or any of the surrounding watering holes. This bar succeeds at what other bars have not even really attempted. Cha Cha's has a pretty cool atmosphere, dim-lit with interesting decor. It also has a pretty fun crowd. I just do not like the service at all. I don't mean that it's hard to get a drink, but the servers (usually all very young) all have that "bouncer mentality". You know, when the bouncers think they are cops. They call last call at 1:30, and I've seen them grab drinks out of people's hands by 1:44am while yelling "You gotta get the fuck out of here." Then they all kind of form a gang up and aggressively force the patrons to the door. Nostalgia, Cha Cha Lounge took me back to the old college days. Anyone that went to WSU might know the direction I'm going in already. This place really reminded me of Mike's/Valhalla structurally. The basement was huge, hot and muggy with the heat deriving from the dozens of people mingling and drinking. Guy Night 2.0 was sent here after our incursion into Belltown drinking tallies of PBR on the way up. Cha Cha was a welcome reprieve from the cold and wet night that ever fickle Seattle weather was nice enough to share Saturday. + Drinks: I have been reading on here that others had problems getting drinks. We came here at 10:30 in the middle of a huge rush of people and had no, I repeat, NO problem getting drinks in a timely fashion. It also really really helped that they had plenty of water ready to go and the prices were cheap. +/- Crowd: The people here were really friendly. We spent a good portion of the night playing foosball and mingling with random people near us. The crowd was huge for sure which caused the problems with the temperature in the place (I had to take a few layers off to manage) but otherwise the place featured some of Capitol Hill's finest and more typical audience: the young and a lot of hipsters. + Location: I really like the flavor of this place. You didn't have that shithead DJ Goldfinger blasting some top 40 BS. Very dingy red lighting downstairs added to the appeal. A random assortment of graffiti, pictures and lighting fixtures strewn throughout many of the walls. I believe my next trip to Cap-Hill will involve another stop here. True story: Was in there the other night with lots of friends. We needed a table and saw a bunch of people getting up to leave. They had a booth with two other tables connected to make the area bigger. We took it over and had a good time for a few minutes. Then this busboy with short dreadlocks comes up to me (I was standing) and goes "We need to move these tables back to where they belong." Okay, no problem. I start telling my friends to get up because the tables have to be moved back. Maybe 2 out of 4 of them get up and Im still trying to get the others to move (oh, alcohol). Then he comes back to me and goes "HEY. I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU TO DO SOMETHING. NOW MOVE THE F@#$ING TABLES!" I just answred "I don't WORK HERE! And anyways we found these tables like this!" So he throws down his tray covered in empties that hes holding onto another table and just has a meltdown "I guess I'll F!@#$ing HAVE TO DO IT MYSELF THEN!" And starts maniacally moving the tables. I end up at Cha Cha Lounge because my friend wants to show me where she met her on-again, off-again boyfriend. Unfortunately, this is the same brand of Cha Cha as in Los Angeles, and there is a reason I avoid this place...coughhipsterscoughcough. Fortunately, this location is homey with sombreros and paintings of Mexican wrestlers on the walls. There's a weird homage to Peter Criss, the least-popular of the original Kiss members, painted on the wall as well. It's, like, 5pm, and the bar is empty except for a bartender, covered in tattoos, dreads down to his knees, and eyes like a puppy dog. His name, Joe, and I instantly become smitten. After downing a couple vodka cranberries and shooting the shit with Joe for twenty minutes or so, we head upstairs for a burrito at Bimbos. Thirty minutes later, we come back downstairs to discover a gang of new patrons have arrived, stealing Joe's attention from us. We make some new friends, I guess they're plumbers. I should say when I first came here, I really expected to hate it because I had been warned that it is the capitol of hipsters in Capitol Hill (conveniently the capitol of hipsters in Seattle), and I kinda loathe hipsters. Perhaps my expectations were set remarkably low, but I actually enjoyed my visit here and will be back. The good: First, to my surprise the Cha Cha Lounge had a decent mix of people. As advertised, the dominant force there was hipsters (I'd estimate 50-70% of the bar), and the rest were mostly normal folks (including a shocking amount of cute gals--this isn't meant as a dig on the wonderful ladies of Seattle, it's more a dig on hipster ladies). More importantly the the hipster folks weren't too cool for school, everybody seemed generally unconcerned or amiably chatting with their neighbors. I also noticed that everybody here seemed to be really enjoying themselves, that made me enjoy myself more... I also was generally pleased by the cheezy hula/tiki decor (but that may be related to my love for all things that are tiki, no matter their level of kitsch). The bad...as noted in other reviews: the music is too loud and the service is slow. They also only have Rainier on tap...and at my advanced age, I don't feel the need to save money on beer at the expense of good flavor, so this was a negative for me, but apparently it's cheap. All in all, I had a good time...I really tried to dislike it, but I didn't, which is impressive given my cynicism and dislike for hipsters...Did all the liquor I had consumed previously have something to do with my opinion? maybe... will I go back to test the waters again? Everyone of these reviews are true in what the atmosphere here is like(minus the one about Margaritas, that girl's stupid)! The service sucks and there's a bunch of hipster fuckheads, but you know what? This place is awesome! Red-lights and a photo-booth! It really doesn't get much better than that. Sure maybe the wait in line to use one of the two bathrooms is excessive because some ass clown is too shy to do coke at the table, but it is one of the few bars in Seattle where lame-o west-coasters crack out of their shell and talk to people who they don't actually know, or at least that has been my experience (but I don't look like a serial rapist or that guy in Seattle who looks like Slash and is clearly on heroin...at least I don't think so). Ohhh Cha Cha, where do I begin? Some people find the whole asshole vibe to be charming. Me, not so much. Especially when the DOOR GUY finds enough time in 10 seconds to be a dick, but whatever it was my last night in town and my first time at the Cha Cha. The place was packed so they must be doing something right, I thought. Took about 10 minutes to get a drink and the lighting was dark and RED. No need for drunk goggles when you can only see in red, I wasn't even drunk and I couldn't decipher 'babe' from 'absolutely not'. I liked the cabana style bar and the tacky wall decorations (from what I could see in the lighting). Anyways, some bizarro foreign exchange students were dancing to music one normally doesn't dance to. That gave me and everyone within 10 feet some entertainment. I was having a decent time. What killed a perfectly fine night for me was the way this place approached last call. Completely obnoxious girls/guys screeched out of a mic repeatedly that it was last call. Yeah, we got it TEN MINUTES AGO. Not all of us are drunken idiots at 1:40 am. The last 3 songs were death metal songs intended to piss everyone off. I swear, you would've thought they hired the most annoying 6 year old to come close down the place 20 minutes early. Ohhhhh Cha Cha. I doubt a ton of people are reading Yelp reviews before they drunkenly stumble in here during a night out in Capitol Hill, but I'm gonna write a review anyway. I'll keep it short and to the point with minimal anecdotes. Simply put, it's fun and it's a quintessential Capitol Hill experience. The drinks are as strong as you could hope for (well drinks are 90% spirit, 10% mixer as a general rule of thumb) as well as inexpensive, the bartenders are nice and patient and the people are fun to watch if nothing else. The crowd can get a little out of hand on a Friday or Saturday night. So be prepared for waiting and the inevitability of being pushed while enjoying your drink. The dank, infrared lighting in the basement makes for an interesting experience. It definitely hides the paleness of my office-dwelling face pretty well. The bathrooms are a disaster, however. There's a decent chance you'll get an STD if your genitalia accidentally touches any surface in the bathroom. So keep a close eye on everything while you're handling your business. Now, this is not something I've experienced first hand, but I wouldn't be shocked if someone came forward with that story... It's not my favorite way to go drinking, but it certainly serves its purpose and it has generally provided a good time for my friends and I. I was totally overstimulated at this place- all the crazy decor, loud music, and low ceilings kind of stressed me out. It was dark to the point of being uncomfortable and I had to yell to talk to my friend across the table. That being said- it's a great place to take a blind date because if you don't want to talk you don't have to and there are a ton of distracting things to look at during awkward moments. read more
