The food here is basically warmed up cafeteria food. Came here for Valentines Day, and everything we ordered tasted like it was prepared days ago and reheated. Even down to the pickles on the cuban sandwich...they were a soggy unchewable mess. And the WINE tasted like rubbing alcohol. So disappointing. The steak on the fries was precut and microwaved. I've been here twice for lunch and both times it was the highlight of my trip. Having lunch in an actual wine cellar in between barrels is a really cool experience and I would come back just for that. Their food is so good too! Definitely get the fries. They changed the menu and the options were so limited. We got 2 appetizers, the hummus and Greek salad and it was just okay. Nothing special. I got the chimichurri fries & they were pretty dry. They barely put any sauce and the meat was dry. Just not good. Service was awful. We had to wait a long time for everything. We had to say something and the manager came to check on us. We were there for like 2 hours. I was sick of being there. Such a disappointment. Matt was our server and he was great. He did the best he could under the circumstances. My wife and I go a Temecula winery a few times a year for a dinner date. A few months ago we went to Oak Mountain/Cave Cafe. The best part about this place is the ambiance for sure. You are literally dining between wine barrels in a cave with 150 feet of mountain above you. It's almost a little unsettling but definitely an experience worth having. The wine was also solid. We arent super wineo's so dont have much to say besides that it's on par with the other wineries in the area. Our biggest gripe was the food (and the accompanying prices). First, there were very few options and they were all very safe and unoriginal. This would have been fine if not for the fact that the food was also just downright bad. We got the Tomahawk Rib eye and the loaded fries and some bread with oil and vinegar. When we ordered the bread our server gently tried to recommend something else, but we really wanted bread after having probably the best bread of our lives at Ponte on our previous date. But we should have heeded his warning because they literally served us what tasted like they bought the cheapest Wonder Bread, balsamic, and olive oil they could find at Vons. The loaded fries were fine, definitely the best item we ate. But they weren't especially flavorful or interesting. Our real bummer is the Tomahawk steak. It was like $150 and it was horrible. I am a big fan of salty meats but this tasted like they accidentally double salted it. It was almost inedible. Also the meat wasn't dry aged or smoked or even seemingly seared. Just a probably $40 piece of meat they stuck in an oven. For this same price I could eat Orange Hill's (in Orange County) dry aged Tomahawk which is both twice as much food and life changing-ly delicious. Of the 4 wineries in Temecula we've gone to (Ponte, Leoness, Lorimar, and Miramonte) this was both the most expensive meal and the worst meal we had. We gently remarked to our server that the meat was over salted and the bread was bad and he said something about a new chef still figuring things out and comped us for the bread. We weren't going to make a big stink about it and just concluded we will not be coming back. In summary, go here for the experience once. But until they get their food sorted out, probably not more than once. read more

My husband and I came here for lunch while we were staying in Temecula over Labor Day weekend. That weekend had searingly hot temperatures so I tried to find a place where we could escape the heat, and Cave Cafe was perfect. I made a last minute-reservation the same day which was easy to make online. The ambience here is unique and cool, with seating inside the cave where they store the barrels of wine. Service was friendly. For appetizers, we shared the crispy brussels sprouts and corn dip. My husband didn't like the brussels sprouts because he said they were burnt. The corn dip was okay but nothing special, and they were served with a miserly portion of corn chips. My peach salad with goat cheese and blueberries was similarly average. There was a lot that they could have done to spruce up this salad. My husband liked his tuna sandwich though. The place was pretty busy for tastings that day and they had a great view. Got the Bison Burger and it was a bit gamey and salty AF! Fries were ok but not awesome. Flatbread was too small to feed a 2 year old. Apparently the chicken salad sandwich was ok and so was the tomato soup but not $20 worthy. Service was ok, view was nice but I'm a big guy and the chairs were quite narrow and uncomfortable. Place lacked panache. Three of us tried the wines from the winery Oak Creek and they were relatively undrinkable. Not having very good luck with the restaurants tied to the wineries and this was no exception. To add insult to injury the wines were not enjoyable. The Cave Cafe is a great spot for a Sunday brunch. I usually get there right when they open so there are no lines. My friends and I like to sit inside the cave. The atmosphere is nice in the cellar although it can get pretty cold so make sure to bring a coat. We also like to get the mimosas which come with flavored syrup instead of juice. Although the overall experience is good every time I come here I have to deduct a star because the food is pretty standard and the service is slow when in the cave. read more

Wow! We loved this place. The cave is so cool! We love that the tables are tucked into the rows of barrels. The lighting is amazing. Yes you can hear everyone but that's part of the fun. I challenge you to find a cave where that is not the case. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the wine is DELICIOUS! We tried the Red flight and the White flight. I LOVED Ed's Red. To me, it was the perfect red. The charcuterie board was perfect for 2 for lunch. Plenty of cheeses and meats and fun things to add to them. My family of five enjoyed a nice dinner at the Cave Cafe. The ambiance was truly unique sitting amongst the wine barrels in the cave made the experience. It was a little loud due to the acoustics of the cave and you could hear others conversations. We ordered the Margherita pizza, bbq chicken salad, cave burger and the poblano linguine pasta. Food was good, the poblano linguine pasta was different, portion sizes were on the smaller size but the burgers were large. Wine flight was disappointing, wine was mediocre and none was to my liking. We had guests visiting from out of town and wanted to take them to a nice restaurant. A friend recommended this place so we decided to give it a try. What a mistake. From the moment we arrived at the host desk until the check was dropped, it was one disappointment after the next. We had a reservation for our party of 10, but had to go in search of someone to seat us because no one came to the host stand to greet us after we waited quite a while although a number of employees were walking in and out of the building and saw us standing there waiting to be seated. Once we were finally seated (I had to keep my jacket on because it was so chilly inside), our server approached our table to take our drink order but lacked any warmth or friendliness. He offered no insight into the menu or suggestions for what to order. We ordered appetizers to start and they were brought out at varying times even though they were the same type of item that we wanted placed at each end of the table. For the main course, 5 of us decided to split two Tomahawk steaks (priced $140 each and serving 2-3 people each) after reading about the description on their special menu. When the steaks arrived, they were placed down on the table with no accompanying plates or steak knives; apparently, the server expected us to use our tiny appetizer plates. This is just bad service. He had ample time before the steaks arrived to provide dinner-sized plates and steak knives. Instead, we had to flag our server down after the runner had dropped the food to request plates and steak knives and then wait several more minutes until they were delivered so we could begin serving out the food. All of that could have been more bearable had the very expensive Tomahawk steaks been delicious. They were not. In fact, I can't remember the last time I had to chew so much on a piece of steak; the meat was very tough and not nearly as flavorful as I expected. Don't get the Tomahawk - not worth it. The server did not check in on us to see how were were liking the food until we were more than halfway finished. Also, I would have enjoyed a second glass of wine to go with my steak, but because the server was so inattentive, I never had the chance to order one. Because we were a large party, they tacked on the gratuity, but the service was definitely not worth it. Only good thing about the meal was the cheesy bread appetizer. We ordered the brunch enchiladas and the country fried steak and gravy. Our waiter was very nice. The enchiladas were very good and I would get again. The country fired steak and gravy came out cold and was not good. My silverware was very dirty and I had to wait over 5 minutes to get someones attention to get some new ones. What a wonderful experience!!! Decided to grab a Groupon for Valentines Day and used it after to beat the crowds, this one was so worth it in so many ways and more. Plenty of parking and we made reservations for lunch. We were greeted right away and had a perfect table set in the corner of the restaurant. We typically eat inside the cave not on the patio because it is much cooler. They are dog friendly on patio. The food has changed since ownership more flavor and a couple more menu items and slight price increase. They had the pull bread taken off the menu on this visit, also the whites are very sparse. I didn't like the new shrimp pasta, too oily and don't like having to cut the tails off the shrimp, I would recommend the salmon over the shrimp pasta. RESERVATIONS Reservations are recommended, only because you cannot predict Temecula...plus, our concierge recommended reservations because of The Cave's popularity. We found the same, and felt lucky that we were able to squeeze in mid-day. The server was quite friendly after we were called and chilled our bottle in an ice bucket as we enjoyed our food. We started off with the Ahi Tartare - served with a heaping helping of avocado and cabbage along with wonton chips. I'm quite partial to the combination, so this was the highlight for my lunch. The umami of ahi, the sweetness of the dressing, and the crispness of the wontons was quite delightful. I was all about the cold dishes that day, so grateful for it. That said, the Harvest Salad was a delight. You can tell some of the items were locally grown and combined in a tasteful combination of smoked bacon, big chunks of apples, cranberries, figs, blue cheese and, what I enjoyed most, were caramelized butternut squash. It did taste like a harvest salad - where I've been tried to be fooled before. (Just name the salad for what it is for chrissakes! :D) For the entree we went with the Street Corn Flatbread. It was our 'veggie' day - so I think you are seeing a theme emerge. I don't do flatbreads often, so this was a welcome warm entree for lunch. It had plenty of flavor, between the wood fired flatbread, the sweetness of the corn, the micro cilantro and a heaping helping of cilantro lime crema - came together quite well. And, delicious enough later back at the room, along with our Raspberry Sparkling wine. PARKING Oak Mountain Winery is on the east-south edge of Temecula Wine Country - you won't have a problem finding it, with its nice bold signage. There is plenty of parking, just make sure to give yourself enough time if you do have a timed reservation. The parking is tiered and can take a few minutes to navigate. Expect to take stairs to get to the entrance. 36522 Via Verde, Temecula, CA 92592 LAY OF THE LAND Once you are on site, you'll note that most of the facility is localized around its entrance. The Cave is quite deceptive, it starts with a quaint outdoor patio around its entrance (be warned, on hot days, outdoors is likewise hot). The entrance is the wine tasting area - two long bars that run along toward the restaurant. Make sure to make your entrance known, the wine servers are quite busy, so grab a bar top to get their attention. Beyond the wine tasting area is an open format shop and restrooms. Beyond the double glass doors is The Cave. These 'caves' go back in several directions, walled on their sides with wine casks. I do recommend getting up and poking around, it is a bit of a unique layout. Having lunch or dinner underground is a bit of an experience itself. ALL IN ALL To our concierge's suggestion, a wonderful outing on a quiet afternoon, on one of the hottest days of the year down in Temecula - so great call on her part. Mushroom pasta, the braised pork chop with vegetables (fantastic), and, DOG friendly. They had a special meal that you can purchase for your dog that consisted of chunks of chicken breast and bowtie pasta. Our little girl love here meal! That was special. Great unique restaurant on a winery with an excellent view. Ended up walking onto the winery last minute as we got a couch from a hot air balloon experience we had that morning back in March. We put our names down on the waitlist that was 50 minutes, but thankfully there is a speakeasy that is nestled within a church-like building next door along with a wine tasting room with a great view of the countryside. Ended up have some cocktails at the speakeasy and had wine flights at the tasting room while soaking in the view. Ended up getting called back early to be seated by the hostess who had been hustling ever we saw her but was very friendly nonetheless. Ended up getting seated inside in the "cellar" which was a little chilly so I would recommend bringing a sweater or jacket even if it's a warm day. The waiter was attentive and the food came out quickly. Had the chimchurri steak fries, beef short ribs and spicy feta dip which were all excellent! We went to The Cave last year and were looking forward to our this visit....I don't kow what happened, but this year it was very, not good. The charturrite plate they show on their website was not what we got. It took us about 25 minutes to get a glass of wine and then we had to stop a waiting who was practically running past us, to stop and take our order. Don't even think of ordering the fries and some kind of meat. The fries were OK with a chimchurri sauce (not very much of it)...the meat was dried out and tough. You can't beat the ambiance. This place is amazing... We went there for our anniversary because we had been there before for a wine tasting in the cave, and we fell in love with their setup for the cave dining. I ordered their chorizo and cajun homemade pasta, and my husband ordered their steak and mashed potatoes. first of all, the pasta was heavenly, it was pretty spicy (i love me some good spice), and the steak was cooked to the most perfect medium rare. it melts in your mouth. I also ordered their bloody mary and omg it was amazing, my husband also ordered an old fashioned and a flight of their mixed wines (everything was amazing) n if you feel like dessert their bread pudding bites are so yummy, so crunchy yet soft and moist on the inside. Overall, we couldn't have had a better service and meals. This is definitely a must to visit if you are in the temecula area. The best part was the price, we ordered so many things and the bill was just over 100 dollars for two people and a lot of food and drinks. This place is not hyped the way it should be. The cave is great. I been here now to eat for brunch for a wine party bus which is extremely fun if you are with friends. The Cave also has a tour that you have to reserve in advanced and has for dining in you will have to get to call ahead and see how busy they get. I called for a party of 2 and told us that it will be okay. My assumptions is that for a bigger party reservations will be needed. The environment is great with great views inside and out. Outside is great with mist and if you are a people watcher you will see groups coming from the party bus, families and bachelorette groups. We had a great server in Ray and the total atmosphere is super laxed. Chimchurri fries and the cave turkey sandwich along with 3 drinks. 2017 Melbec and blueberry mimosa that was top notch. We took a day to explore wine country with our family. I know, I know...wine tasting with kids...not ideal, right? Wrong. They had so much fun. This is the only winery we actually stopped at. I chose it because I thought the kiddos would enjoy eating 'in a cave' and I was right. They thought it was so cool! And so did I! The ambiance is so unique inside and the cool air felt amazing on a 95 degree summer day. The food was actually really good. A bit pricey, but fairly standard for the area. The chimichurri fries were DELICIOUS! My husband and I shared a mixed wine flight and we really enjoyed them all. The service was very slow to start but our server was very friendly and helpful and brought us each an extra 'sample' of our favorite wines from the flight.
