I was in Providence and looking for a foodie fun place for dinner with a local friend. We had trouble with finding the entrance to the restaurant at first, but we made it. Reservations were easy to make online and they have a very detailed website. The food was pretty good but not life changing. It seemed to be more on the milder side and was a bit bland. I wanted more flavor. I had the pear chicken, which was very good and my friend had a seasonal bass dish with gnocchi that they did not care for. The wine list was decent and I was pleased to find something by Caymus. My friend had a cucumber cocktail that they enjoyed. The best part of the restaurant was definitely the decor. It is crazy in there. There are animals and statues everywhere, as well as dozens of crystal chandeliers. It is very eclectic and strange, which we enjoyed. The service was good and the staff attentive. We felt like the people are probably what makes this place work. For the price, it's a pretty good value though a touch on the spendy side. CAV is a great local gem that's certainly withstood the test of time. There's a cozy, funky vibe to this place that's accentuated by the eclectic pieces of artwork everywhere you look (some of which are for sale). It feels as if you're eating in an art gallery. CAV seems to have a deep appreciation for art, demonstrated not only by their decor but also by the beautiful presentation of their food. The sesame hijiki encrusted yellowfin tuna, which I almost always end up ordering, is artfully plated with a compact dome of pickled veggies and a elegantly presented vegetable roll. (And yes, it tastes as good as it looks.) The menu itself can lean a little old school. Appetizers like coconut shrimp with Thai chili sauce and walnut-encrusted brie may not be the hippest but they're always executed well and the service is always warm and personable. If CAV is anything, it's solid and consistent with something on the menu for everyone. Pro tip: When dessert rolls around, order the gateau concorde. This chocolate mousse tort with chocolate meringue is to die for and is low-key one of CAV's best offerings! read more

First time going to Cav; had Sunday Brunch. Made reservations beforehand and was seated as soon as checked in. Was busy but not super busy; the service was Great! Our waiter was nice and very quick; we received out drinks and food surprisingly quick. We were in and out quicker than expected. The decor is very different, eclectic, loved all the chandeliers, lights and mirrors. The food was ok, no complaints; i do want to go back and try lunch and dinners. I had waffles and a pineapple mimosa. My friend had an omelette and bloody Mary. I wish they had added whipped cream and more berries to my waffles; it was good but nothing special. I attended a work dinner with a large party of 14. Our server was fantastic and handled the party well. Several appetizers were offered and I tried the shrimp cocktail, bruschetta, and goat cheese balls. The cocktail was large but on the fishier side. Cheese balls were tasty but small- it was on odd presentation of 10 marble sized cheese balls on a large platter. For my entree I ordered the mushroom risotto and added shrimp. It was an odd dish. I've never had risotto where the sauce wasn't mixed with the rice. It was served as almost a mushroom gravy with a giant scoop of rice on top. Again, odd presentation and didn't really care for it. I had a maple bourbon old fashioned which was tasty and a vanilla crème brûlée which was good. Overall an odd dining experience and nothing beyond average in my opinion. read more

He had not been there in many years. First of all, the interior is like no other. There are fascinating pieces of art all around the restaurant. Everyone who worked there was friendly, but above all else, the food was amazing! It is rear that you have a multicourse meal and every single thing is perfect. I was so pleased to try CAV for the first time tonight!! I've heard so much about it and it lived up to expectations. My husband and I came for our anniversary and started with the red curry mussels and they were so delicious, we were sipping the broth afterwards. Then, I had the award winning chicken and pears and my husband had the duck which were both well balanced and super flavorful dishes. After dinner and a few rounds of martinis (super yummy as well, he had lychee I had espresso) we had the chocolate mousse and even though I was so full, we finished every bite. This place was terrific! My girlfriend were visiting Providence on Labor Day Weekend and we found this hidden gem! The appetizers were outstanding, and the lobster bisque that we both had was the best ever. The chef made a bold/genius decision to include a Tahitian vanilla to accentuate the bisque's sweet flavor. Our server was extremely friendly and kind; however the food was lackluster. We started with a bowl of clam chowder which was creamy and salty. I ordered the french toast which was pretty standard and a little too sweet for my taste. I was hoping the apples, raisin and walnuts would add an extra complexity and wasn't impressed. My boyfriend got the poached eggs with bacon and was disappointed that the bacon was overly done and tough to chew. I've been coming to CAV since 2009 and it breaks my heart to leave a review that isn't 5 stars. This place used to be AMAZING but my last two visits have been awful. Most recently was one last week. I will start by saying they have the BEST coconut shrimp. We sat at the bar and ordered some of the shrimp, chowder and a salad. The chowder was served to me cold and coagulated. Not to mention there were no clams or potatoes. So just a cold bowl of thick cream. I mentioned it to the bartender who offered to take it back and put it in the microwave. I hate food waste but that was just not ideal. No crackers served with it and no salt and pepper. The salad was fine but the tuna slices were inconsistent. The staff was MISERABLE. One of these servers actually dropped an F bomb right behind me as he stormed past me mad about something. I know the owner unfortunately passed a few years ago, and maybe there is a new kitchen manager? Not sure but as a once loyal patron I won't be back. read more
