My boyfriend took me there for my birthday and it was such a treat. We started with the Rockefeller oysters and my boyfriend had an old fashioned. He enjoyed his drink and ordered 2 of them. He had an 8oz filet mignon with mashed potatoes and I had the blackened salmon. Everything was delicious and service was great. We ended with a coffee and a chocolate torte. The Caucus Club was a restaurant I discovered while doing research to figure out where my friends and I should go out for a dude's night out. I got there earlier than them to survey the dining room, and I was very much excited for what was to come. Beyond tables and chairs, they have a beautiful full service bar and live band with private rooms if needed. I found all the staff to be extremely courteous and welcoming despite the fact most of them were not directly attending to me or my friend's needs. The food from beginning to end was just amazing. The Caesar salad was made right in front of us tableside, so the freshness of the ingredients really came through. Not everything pictured in my review was ordered by me, but I did get to try most of it and nothing really disappointed us. Everything was seasoned perfectly, the meats were cooked to our liking, and the sides were easily shareable and complimented all our main dishes. My only real complaint was with the "Oscar Style' steak enhancement. It was some crab meat with asparagus spears and a creamy sauce. I didn't feel it had much sauce or moisture, and the crab itself was rubbery and added nothing to my ribeye. If anything it only distracted from the beautiful flavors of the beef. I felt as if the zip sauce my friends got for their steaks was a better option, so in the future I will know to avoid the Oscar Style. Beyond this minor hiccup the entire dinner experience was fantastic. I cannot wait to come back, but just know that you will probably spend $150+ dollars individually depending on how you divide the bill and how many drinks you get. We brought my daughter and her husband here to celebrate her passing an important professional exam! Our waiter could not have been a better guy! Entertaining, attentive, and frankly pretty funny! Filet was ordered medium and came rare, server said the it was medium and it was not. Server said she picked largest scallops for my date and they were average size, not large by any standards. Glazed Brussels sprouts and butternut squash was delicious as was the butternut squash risotto, twice baked potato was anticlimactic. Desserts were ok, chocolate torte and key lime pie. Presentation on desserts was lacking, pretty plain Had ordered a 3rd dessert and server forgot it, fortunately wasn't billed for it. Only 1 time did server come by to refill our waters, and our bar drinks were empty for sometime before we were asked if we wanted 2nd round which we declined. Bill came, and didn't add up, there was -100 for the deposit and then a -70 that didn't factor into the bill at all which is confusing. Just very disappointing for a valentines dinner for 2 with an $77 tip and a total bill of $430 with OK service, OK food not outstanding, and a valet service where 3 other couples who came out after we did were delivered their cars before us totaling a 20 minutes wait. Would not recommend the Caucus Club. Place had nice ambiance, decor and good music, but the food and service just does not match the price point. Dinner for 4 at the Highland at Ren Cen with drinks and desserts, outstanding service and better quality food was $650. I first came here for the Auto Show Charity Preview in 2019 and had a great (crowded, fun, loud) experience. I have wanted to come back since then for a "normal dining experience" and now that COVID has eased up a bit and we're vaccinated, it was time to check it out for an anniversary dinner. My first advice - please dress up. People who wandered in off the street in shorts or jeans really looked out-of-place. The sign on the door says business casual or better, and it helps the ambiance if everyone respects that, even if they don't technically kick you out or refuse service. We showed up half an hour early (6pm) because we wanted to sit at the bar and try a cocktail. The bartender was an absolute delight - I can't remember the name of the bourbon drink I tried, but it was excellently prepared and presented, and strong enough that I didn't need wine with dinner. I hardly set down my empty water glass (parched from a Riverfront walk in the 84 degree weather) before the bartender refilled it. First-class service. We moved to the dining room close to our reservation time and were promptly seated. I was surprised it wasn't packed at 6:30pm on a Saturday night! (Although it was almost packed by the time we left at 7:30pm) We were famished, having skipped lunch because we had a list of things we wanted to try. We split the lobster bisque and an order of calamari. Both were amazing. The bisque had pieces of lobster, was decadent and creamy, and salty without being overpowering. I would order it again in a second. The calamari was a generous portion for the price, soft and flash-fried, with a delicious caper-based sauce. My entree was lake perch. I know this is primarily a dry-aged steak restaurant, but I'm trying to limit my red meat intake and lake perch is my favorite seafood of all time, so I had to go with it. The presentation was phenomenal (my photo doesn't even do it justice), and the flavors were fantastic. If I were to list qualms, neither of which is worthy of deducting a star, it's that the caper-lemon-butter sauce was almost identical to what was on the calamari, so I got a repeat of some of the same flavors, and the haricots verts (fancy speak for green beans) needed seasoning/salt. My partner ordered crème brûlée and it was fantastic. The server, John, was friendly, charismatic, full of information about the menu, and checked on us with just the right frequency. One mark of a well-oiled machine is that all courses show up just when you start to wonder about them, and this was true with Caucus Club. The live music was great! Piano player and a singer who could scat sing. Nice gentle background for our delicious dinner. It's a pricey dinner. But if you didn't know that, why are you on their page? We spent about $120 for dinner (with 2 appetizers & dessert), and $180 total including drinks and tips. I think the experience-to-cost ratio was about right, so no complaints there. The next time I am fortunate enough to find myself downtown with the right attire, I plan to revisit Caucus Club and try one of their steaks. read more

Stepping into the Caucus Club is like stepping into a time machine, and there's a good reason for that. The Penobscot building where the restaurant is located was built in 1927. Stepping in off the street, you go through a revolving door. There is hardly anybody here, which isn't hard to believe. Besides being a relic from a bygone age, there's nothing at the street level to draw you in. And, that's a real shame. There is really a lot to like about this place. Everything is immaculate. There is an army of smartly-dressed workers to attend to your every need. Jazz plays over the speakers. It all works to transport you back to the 1950s. As for the food, know this: butter is your friend. Any vegetable you get will be swimming in it. The mashed potatoes are nicely buttered. The dauphinoise potatoes are a glorious symphony of Parmesan cheese and butter. And, you start out with freshly baked bread - still steaming hot - and a side of butter. The lobster bisque is thick and creamy and nicely seasoned, but had only two tiny flecks of actual lobster. The Scottish salmon has a gorgeous bourbon glaze, but the rice with walnuts is an acquired taste. It seemed overly sweet at first, but we grew to like it. The halibut is perfectly cooked and seasoned, but a bit on the small side. The buttery vegetables are a nice compliment, however. Prices are steep for the cocktails; my wife got a beautiful drink that set us back $14. Beer was reasonable, however, ranging from $6 to $8 a pint. If you're looking for somewhere you can slow things down a bit, where you can take that special someone for a wonderful dining experience, then this is the place. read more

Nice upbeat piano accompaniment for our meal tonight. The paper menu is ours to keep. We were seated at a half booth on the back wall. Karen is waiting on us. She seems pleasant and is double masked, has a cool and shiny, blingy silver mask. I started with a mojitoesque mocktail, goat cheese truffle, table side Caesar, half oysters on the half shell, lobster bisque, calamari, crab cakes and blackened Scottish salmon is what we ordered for our meal tonight. The warm bread was out shortly after our apps and starters were ordered. It's chewy, soft and billowy and tasty, carb worthy for sure. The 3 goat cheese balls, toast point and salads is delicious. The dressing and salad is refreshing, slightly tart from the vinaigrette dressing. The lobster bisque is creamy, delicate, flavorful and beautiful. I also like the hint of chive garnish too. The tableside Caesar salad was average, dressing is a bit flat, bland and not enough bite from the lemon, may have been better with some achovies, shot of hot sauce or worchestershire even. The salad wasn't worth the $28 for the two of us. The romaine lettuce leaves are a bit brown and burnt too. Karen asked how the salad was. I told her it was okay, that the dressing is bland and the lettuce is brown too. She replied oh. The east coats oysters are clean, smooth and lovely. This was my favorite part of my meal. The calamari is nicely flash fried, slightly chewy, sauce is a bit tart and refreshing. The breading a bit heavy but not bad. I do love the capers, it adds a unique taste and balance. The Scottish salmon was perfectly cooked, the rainbow Swiss chard is a nice meal balance too. The crab cakes were quite good, crispy and crab filled. Would have liked a more flavorful sauce than the tomato based sauce. Even the sauce for the calamari sauce tastes better to me than what it came with. JQ was an impeccable, talented and timely waiter who made the best table side caesar salad we've had in years! I had already told him it was a place that had a dress code and he came in a NICE shirt and pants BUT no collar, so thus the jacket. That put a damper on things. For an extra special Valentine's date, I headed somewhere historic with the beau to celebrate the day. Rather than face the chaos of going the night of St Valentine's, we deferred until we could enjoy a relaxed evening and headed to the motor city. He picked out the Caucus Club, a place that is experiencing a renaissance along with the city of Detroit, and which may be most famous for helping Barbra Streisand get her start. We arrived for our late dinner and were promptly seated. A pianist played some jazz-inspired music and a pleasant din of conversation and cutlery pervaded the atmosphere. Our friendly server, Kelsea, took our drink orders, and we were also ready to order food by the time she came over. I went with a filet mignon and a side of the creamed spinach. While we waited for our meal, we enjoyed some tasty hot bread. My filet was cooked to a perfect medium, and flavored just right. I tried to take the smallest bites that I could to savor it even longer! The creamed spinach was a size enough for two, and we enjoyed splitting it between us that evening. Neither of us had room for dessert, but we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at the Caucus Club. I hope that I will be lucky enough to return sometime soon! read more

The Caucus Club is very special to me. 36 years ago I proposed to my wife at the Caucus Club. We frequented the place in the late eighties and early nineties when we worked downtown. It was fabulous then. It's a shame it was closed for many years but it reopened better than it used to be. My wife and I celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary there. It was amazing. From cocktails to appetizers to the classic table side ceasar salad to entrees to dessert everything was the best. We were treated so well from a special anniversary card and dessert. The service is phenomenal, the food is phenomenal, we could not have had a better experience. I would strongly recommend this place to everyone. read more
