    Carne de Res for two
    Amy W.

We had an amazing time and a wonderful dinner at Leña! This has been on our list for a while now. I did make reservations, however on a Thursday at 5 pm they were not necessary. We were able to sit right at the bar which is our preferred spot anyway so it was a win for us. The menu is set up to share dishes. Which is perfect because I never eat all of my meal anyway. We started with the Pintxo de Txampis which was sauted onion and mushrooms with goat cheese on a grilled baguette. For our main dish we chose Carne de Res, which was strip steak with onion rings and little pear onions. Both were delicious. Definitely enough for two and enough to take home. The service was impeccable. We both chose to get wine with our meals. The Spanish wine was a bit to sweet for me but the Malbec was just perfect. We enjoyed everything about this place and would definitely recommend other give it a try.

My friend and I stopped by to try Leña for an early dinner a while back. While the service and atmosphere was stellar, the food was just okay and nothing to rave about. It might just have been what we chose and not an indication of their food overall. However, the croquetas were exceptionally good and worth a try.

    Croquetas. Very good.

A truly excellent meal. The enselada de manzana (apple salad) and the grilled half chicken with red kuri squash puree were exceptional. The croquetas were very good as well. You'd be wise to order the bread service early. Service was excellent all night, Theo in particular. We will return.

Beyond disappointing. We tried 4 different items, typical when my boyfriend and I try a new restaurant and we truthfully couldn't even enjoy one of the items that were given to us. At the fourth item we had to let the server know that the fish was way too salty and we were not interested in anything else that this restaurant could offer us. I was really looking forward to this, as my parents gave us a gift card to come visit this place and many people had positive recommendations, but when we came and tried it, we couldn't even enjoy one of the four dishes that we were given to us. The people were kind and they tried their best to accommodate us, but honestly, the food was not even close to matching the price. We would not come back again.

Everything was fantastic! Very creative cuisine, perfect flavor balance. We got the charred bets which was probably the best dish. Also the picked tuna which was really unique and delicious, the main course was a deep fried octopus which I've never had prepped like that. Incredible! The aioli, tapenade, and Plantain mash were a perfect accompaniment. The dessert was an almond custard (basically marzipan) on short bread tart. So unique! They validated parking too. GO!!!

It was okay. The service was underwhelming along with the food and value. Not a fan of newer restaurants with all the charm of an office lobby.

What a wonderful restaurant! My girlfriends and I ventured to Leña on a recent Monday night, and I kid you not, we ordered just about everything on the menu. Leña is located in Brush Park not too far from Ford Field. When you walk in you immediately see a large open-air kitchen. To the left is a small bar and a lounge area. To the right are a few high top tables and the main dining area. The restaurant has lots of natural light with floor-to-ceiling window which give it a great open airy feeling with a cool Spanish vibe. Our server, Jacqueline was FABULOUS! She knew the menu backwards, forwards and upside down. We had a ton of questions and she had ton of answers. There were 5 of us and she said the chef could accommodate the dishes for five people (i.e., if a dish came with 2 items, they expanded it to 5). Drink were the first order of business. I started with some bubbles - Carol Valles Perellada Faura 2021. My friends ordered the Él Fuma and one the Herbal Gin & Tonic. Our food fest started with: Bacalao Croqueta - whipped salt cod, lemon oil, potato croqueta Cangrejo en Piquillo - scarlet crab, aioli, pimento, chive Empanadillas - roasted lamb, moorish spice, mojo rojo Crudo del Dia - ora king salmon, orange vinaigrette, shaved onion, caper I loved the scarlet crab. Probably could have gotten a 2nd order! Second course: Brocheta de Hongos - grilled maitake mushrooms, hazelnut romesco Con Remolacha - roasted beets, fresh cheese, horseradish, dill Pulpo a la Plancha - grilled octopus, nora pepper, chickpea panisse, piquillo/kombu conserva The octopus was grilled to perfection. If it's overcooked, it's like eating rubber. Not the case here - it was so tender and delicious! Third course: Chuleta de Cerdo - grilled pork chop, pork jus, apples, brown butter & celery root puree, watercress Bacalao en salsa verde - pan roasted Icelandic cod, salsa verde, steamed clams, fried potatoes Codorniz Rellena - chicken chorizo stuffed quail, salsa brava, stewed chickpeas, aioli 38 Dessert: Flan Tarta de chocolat Tarta de queso (Basque cheesecake) Everything was so delicious. My favorite dishes were the scarlet crab, whipped salt cod, salmon crudo, grilled octopus, pork chop, stuffed quail, grilled maitake mushrooms, cheesecake and flan. That's most of the menu right? lol Definitely put Lena on your list of restaurants to try. You won't be disappointed. Todo es delicisos!! Barriga llena, Corazón contento (Full belly, happy heart.)

Ambiance: Very modern, borderline fine dining with a Detroit flare, I love the open kitchen layout where you can see your entire meal prepped and no stone is unturned. The highlight is the open fire grill top Service: The attention to detail was great and our server had a fun personality, amplifying the experience. Food: I love me some good tapas. Each dish had an interesting spin and I would dare say none of them were traditional. We had an array of course that were flavorful and impactful. The seafood was so fresh (save for the canned tuna, which was still fantastic nonetheless). The only miss I would say is the tortilla (?), it lacked the creativity and "wow factor" of the other dishes. Overall, we left very happy and full. Oh, and I can't forget about the delicious cocktails. Can't go wrong with a little bit of sangria!

My first note is that I'd definitely make a reservation if you're planning on coming here! It seems to be a new go-to spot, and was pretty busy when we arrived. But, since we had a reservation, we were seated right away. We walked in and were immediately greeted by such incredible smells! The atmosphere was so welcoming and cozy. We taken to our table and were immediately asked about any allergies or dietary restrictions and guided through the menu. The menu is filled with dishes that are meant to be shared -- our waitress suggested 3ish plates per person -- but we decided to not share and just get 3 plates each for ourselves. I ended up going with the sangria to drink which was absolutely delicious, the cangrejo en piquillo (crab stuffed peppers), hongos a la brasa (grilled mushrooms), calabaza asada (roasted squash), and the queso y mantequilla (cheesecake). I really enjoyed the flavors of the dishes. I think I would get everything again, aside from the squash. I just wasn't super impressed with their entree offerings. Overall, the food was good, the service was great, parking was easy, and I loved the atmosphere. I'd visit again! Pro tip: if you park at 440 Alfred, Leña will validate parking!

It's an excellent establishment. The food is locally sourced and thoughtfully prepared. The service is attentive and I feel like all the employees enjoy interacting with customers. All this and the dining is casual.

Food: Lovely! Lots of great variety of food, what stood out was how delicious they were able to make a simple vegetable taste. The tasting menu was definitely worth it. Service: It was very busy but nonetheless the servers were warm and friendly and we felt taken care of. Ambiance: Love the lighting and the open concept. Everyone looked happy and it was nice to sit near the window on a winter night!!

Lovely service. FYI they do have validated parking but the lot is quite small. Entrance is easy to miss as well. We were greeted graciously and seated quickly (we had a reservation). Overall, everything was amazing. There were quite a few items with nuts ( I have a nut allergy to all nuts) but they were able to make accommodations. My favorite was the habas or the pork collar. The habas looked odd at first but after mixing it, it was delicious. My only issue is that the side order of bread was REALLY small and I wish that there was more bread given with the habas. The pork was wonderfully cooked, tender, delicious. They said the menu changes about every 6 weeks and I'm so excited to go back!

Nate and I stopped in on our most recent visit to Detroit and had a lovely experience. The space is tucked away but had a surprising amount of outdoor space--we were there in January but I'd love to come back in the summer. We were greeted right away and given a spot near the bar. The menu includes cocktails, lots of wine, and several tasty food options. It was quite busy inside, so it took a bit of time for our server to come over to us, but we weren't in a rush. They had ten cocktails on their list and I tried the bullet proof soul and Nate got the negroni alla perra. The ingredients list for some of the cocktails include things I've never heard of, but at a place like this, I just know it's going to be good. Our drinks were perfectly balanced and very tasty. We also ordered the mortadella sandwich to split--this was delicious. It was pretty messy, but worth it. It was perfectly toasted and full of mortadella. Everything on the menu sounded delicious and I would love to try more of the food options. Can't wait to visit again!

Downtown Detroit definitely feels different now, and the crowd has shifted a bit, but none of that took away from what The Standby is. That alleyway magic is still there. Walking in honestly felt like a little blast from the past, and it made me really happy. It ended up being a highlight of my trip home. The food was phenomenal. The crab was so buttery, the waffle situation was amazing, and the overall execution across the menu was impressive. We ordered a lot, basically half the menu and everything hit. * Short rib plate: delicious, rich, and comforting * Chicken schnitzel with curry mustard: WOW. Juicy, crunchy, fresh, perfectly seasoned. The curry mustard was everything, and that little pepper on top? 10/10. This was hands down my favorite dish. * Drinks: They had brand ambassadors for Wild Turkey, giving out free Old Fashioneds, which was honestly the perfect touch. We also had a small ounce pour of a mezcal that was beautifully smoked, super aromatic and smoky in the best way. Service was great too, we had two different servers, and both were attentive and kind. The only miss for me personally was the pastrami salmon toast. I wanted to love it so badly because I love salmon and I love smoked fish, but it just wasn't for me. I actually sent it back (which I felt bad about). I think the slight sweetness, (possibly from the tomato jam)threw it off for my palate. I was craving something fully savory with a bit of acidity. I think a thicker, crunchier toast and a more umami-forward, citrusy or pickled element might have taken it where it needed to go. That said, I know pastrami-style salmon is a thing right now, it just didn't work for me. Everything else? Truly amazing. The Standby will forever be a place I come back to when I'm home. I'm excited to return, see what's new on the menu, and relive that magic again. Highly recommend. 10 out of 10. Will absolutely be back.

Between the two of us we had the beet salad, burger and steak tartare. Burger was good, but not the best smash burger that I've had. Beet salad was fine, however the cream cheese was a bit overpowering against the orange oil. It was dying for some citrus. Steak tartare was a bit dry, meaning that a small dab of olive oil would have added to the richness and overall mouth feel. I did not really taste the egg although I did see a dab of yolk on the tartare. Needed a bit of salt also to enhance the taste Menu was small, but it did cover a cross section of French bistro dishes. All in all, I thought it was a bit overpriced. So I will have to consider returning for a full meal. I would come back for a burger and beer at the bar.
