We checked this place out tonight and it looks just as the clips do on instagram! A large outdoor patio, indoor bar with the French doors opened -- perfect t for these summer days. They also have an intimate dining space tucked away, I mean the music and mood are different all under one roof. They do offer happy hour on Wednesday through Friday 4 to 7. We opted to sit at the bar as a spot opened up. The bartenders were really busy... our bartender I think felt bad they were so backed up mixing drinks, she got us a shot. The bartender had good recommendations. She made some good drinks- we had the Fuego and Kiwi martini. The kiwi martini is sweet but flavorful. I would get again without that sugar rim. Fuego no complaints. And was not to spicy. The ambience is a summer spot, as I think of summer, I think of this restaurant now. For food, many people were getting the lobster fried rice-- that dish could be shared between 3 to 4 people. For me, the rice tasted a little bit sweet with the truffle and pineapple. And the jerk beef empanada that was a winner!! the empanada was made out of like a puff pastry, and the short rib beef was tender and flavorful he wasn't jerk like spicy. I will surely return, I think I need to have a colorful dress on to enjoy my summer mode at Baru and I certainly will order that jerk empanada!! read more

Absolutely love this gem! They have the best fish tacos I've ever had & the cutest aesthetic. The bar staff is incredible and they have a great happy hour during the week with $10 drinks and bites. I was downtown on a Friday evening and was looking for a happy hour and came across this restaurant, which was unique in its style starting from the outside Terrace to the inside seat. It may be considered small, but it had very unique features the food that they have for happy hour was very tasty bites. I recommend going to this restaurant. Food was actually very good. Empanadas with shredded beef were exceptional as was the lobster fried rice. The drinks were quite good but took a very long time to receive (as did everything). We all decided to order wine since that shouldn't take too long. Wrong. It took 45 minutes. We had to send the beef skewers back since they were essentially made from trimmed off beef gristle that none of use could chew through. When the order was wrong for one of the entrees, they took it back and never brought the correct order. For now, I recommend avoiding this place. read more

Baru is a fun, Instagrammable spot downtown. Nate and I were looking for a place to grab an early dinner before heading to a show so we were able to get a table right away (around 5 pm). Our server was really helpful with recommendations so we ordered the empanadas, a side of Brussels sprouts, fish tacos, and a slider. We got the empanadas first and they were awesome--super flaky pastry with tender chicken and a delicious dipping sauce. I would order these every time! The fish tacos were just okay--the fish itself was cooked nicely but not crispy (kind of damp) and the tortillas were a bit tough and not very flavorful. The Brussels sprouts were listed on the menu as being "crispy" but they were pretty mushy. They had good flavor, though, and it was a large portion for a $7 side. Finally, the slider was very tasty and it came with a side of fries, which was nice. We didn't get any cocktails or desserts, but those all sounded pretty good. Overall it was a good experience, but for the price I was expecting the food to hit a bit better. read more

Tried this fairly new eatery (kiddie corner to Fixins') w my mom on a Sunday afternoon. Perfect weather to sit outside with a slight breeze. I can appreciate the fairly spread out arrangement of chairs, couches, and tables. The patio is lower with lots of things to look at all-around. I don't drink, so I can't speak for that, but I did try the chicken empanadas, guacamole, and sliders. They serve brunch till 3PM and were out of the avocado toast - good sign. Food did not take long, with surprisingly filling portions that seemed small at first. Everything was hot and crisp. I like that there were trees surrounding the patio as this helps with sun beating down on the tables without umbrellas. Service was awesome and he recommended a few things, no physical menu just yet, but staff are obviously working out the kinks of recently opening. I would definitely return here on a nice afternoon/evening for a few shareable places and ambiance! I can't wait to see what their lunch is like and how they manage with more of a crowd. My wife and I came here for Valentines Day and it was a really cool space. We ordered the oysters and yellowtail crudo as starters, both of which were incredible. I ordered the short rib as my main and my wife ordered the grilled whole seabass. I really enjoyed the short rib and loved that they came with plantains and brussel sprouts. The seabass was also packed with flavor. We finished with the tres leches bread pudding, and it definitely delivered. The service was great, especially on a busy night. A group of about 15 of us gathered for brunch here on Super Bowl Sunday. My friend whose birthday it was spoke to the owner or manager before we came in so we were expecting a great experience. Almost everyone got a bottomless drink and they kept refilling the same cup. After so many refills we would have to request new cups. We were not aware of the charge for condiments for the tacos that were very bland. Most of the table complained about the food and left still hungry. We were given the wrong food or it just wasn't made right. They should go back to the drawing board for brunch and really train the staff for it. I would say that maybe brunch isn't their strong suit but they are a great place for lunch or dinner. read more

We took a day trip to Detroit for a concert and gave Baru a try based on their instagram. It did not disappoint. The ambiance was great. The color choices and decorations appealed to me. The bathroom area decor will give you backgrounds to post on your own Instagram. The guava butter cake I had as dessert was delicious, the guava sauce, mixed with the lemon sorbet The blackened salmon was moist and full of flavor. The Crispy red snapper was definitely crispy but the pickled veggies added a nice tang, making the overall dish good. We went to the soft opening a couple of weeks ago. I have been so busy that I haven't had a chance to review. We got to Baru right when they opened and managed to secure a spot at the bar. Within an hour this place was hopping. The bartender made drink suggestions and we were both very happy with our choices. We then asked for food recommendations and the fish tacos came highly recommended. We got the fish tacos and watermelon salad. Both were delicious. The ambiance was what really got me though. So the food was great and the drinks did not disappoint at all. Now you could tell that things are still getting ironed out when I received a dish twice ( tuna nachos) and the bill took about 15 minutes to come after it was requested -ended up with a free shot of tequila. The vibe is chill but more dress up- if you visit. Parking is valet. Z lot or good luck on street. The drinks weren't strong for 18 a pop but Miguel was absolutely wonderful and made corrections. I will add everyone is good looking. And the bartender was too busy talking so he did forget the food and the short ribs took forever. Would come back. We had a wonderful time at Baru last night! It was our first time dining there. The restaurant was beautiful. Service was fantastic! Our food was delicious- you have to get the crispy brussels! They were a big hit! I can't say enough good things about this place. We even got to have a drink in the speak easy after dinner- we almost missed the secret entrance but we happened to catch someone sneaking out! I had the shrimp tacos for my main and it came with grilled pineapple, the pineapple was clearly added on the taco straight from the cooler as it was ice cold. Drinks were good but we waited about 20 mins each time for drinks to come. We were one of three tables in the main dining room and still had to wait 20 mins for cocktails, waters not refilled, and they brought a completely different main dish than what was ordered, then had to wait another 20 mins for the correct one. When we got the bill they added an extra cocktail that was not ordered, and the incorrect dish was still on the bill along with the correct one. They also added an automatic 20% gratuity even tho we were just a table of four. No apology for the waits, the incorrect dish, or the wrong bill. Overall food was good but pricey, atmosphere was nice, but the poor service would make me never go back. Spend your money somewhere else. read more

He said he'd give me a few minutes & never returned to me. A young lady who looked to be working the entrance came to take my order. Took a while for one lemon drop..a water and a Caesar salad with shrimp to arrive. I never got the water & had to stop someone for silverware & was only given a fork. Service was super slow and when I arrived no one else was seated in the bar area. I didn't like the automatic 20% gratuity for a party of ONE. I added an additional $5 only because of the young lady noticing no one was taking my order at an empty bar. It is a shame because I'd like to return to try the full menu but I probably won't based on my bill of $62 for one drink and a Cesar salad with shrimp AND the inferior service.
