I have a new favorite place to eat in Greektown. My wife and I had been attending the Detroit Grand Prix, and we were ready for our relaxing dinner after several hours in the sun. We walked up to the door and were promptly and politely graded. It's always a good sign when they make you feel like they're glad you're there. We both ordered a cocktail, and in my case I went with a Mojito. Very well prepared and refreshing on a hot day. I took a chance and order a plate of lamb chops. I was absolutely flabbergasted at how perfectly seasoned and tender they were. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say these were the best lamb chops I've ever had. Weeks later I'm still thinking about them. This place is not cheap, but you absolutely get what you paid for. I'm looking forward to coming back someday soon. read more

MATI is a newer restaurant on the Greektown strip. Inside is beautifully decorated. They also have patio seating. We enjoyed plenty of drinks, apps and a few entrees. Most of everything was quite salty. The octopus tentacle was delicious! Perfectly cooked and flavorful. Same with the saganaki. We also enjoyed the trio dip--the feta dip was pretty salty but its feta so we let it pass and even ordered a second plate. The tzatziki was very good and fresh. The lemon rice soup wasn't anything special and was served lukewarm. We also got a seafood pasta which was entirely too salty to enjoy. Our server (Nina?) was very nice and attentive. I was in Detroit with my team for the Siemens Realize Live conference and we decided to explore Greektown one evening. Before we even looked up a place to go, MATI found us -- we heard the music and caught a glimpse of people dancing right from the street and just followed the energy in. We grabbed seats at the bar and the vibe was absolutely infectious. The live music was fantastic -- the kind that makes you want to stay for "just one more round" several times over. But what really made the night was the people. The bar staff was on point -- attentive, personable, and quick without ever feeling rushed. The other patrons and staff alike were genuinely warm and welcoming to a group of out-of-towners. We only stopped in for drinks and the music, but the whole atmosphere made it one of the best spontaneous nights of the trip. If you find yourself in Greektown and hear the music -- just go in. You won't regret it. We'll definitely be back next year if the conference brings us to Detroit again. read more

We sat outside on a perfect day. The food and drinks were delicious. My husband went on his own previously, ate delicious octopus, and raved about the service. Today, the shrimp scampi was outstanding and the mixed grill plate could've fed 3 people! So very good. Our waitress was great, but they were a wee bit understaffed. My wife and I stopped in before a Red Wings Game. The happy hour specials caught our eye so we went in for a drink. The bartender was very nice and we decided to have dinner there. You can dress this up for a formal fun night or just enjoy old school hospitality in super clean and new place. We've eater at other restaurants in Greek Town, but his was our first time having dinner at Mati. We found the food to be fantastic! Any concerns from years ago about overpriced subpar food do not apply here. The Saganaki (flaming cheese) with pitas was delicious. You might think all Saganaki is the same, but we felt theirs was the best we've ever had. The Chicken, Lemon, and Rice Soup was the best we've ever tasted. This alone would be enough to bring us back--but wait there's more! Lamb Shank with mashed potatoes was delicious. The sampler platter was huge and offered a wide variety of tastes. We felt the appearance of French fries was a bit concerning and were somewhat unhappy that they were used fill in the gaps in the platter, but as we started eating they were delicious and provided a break from the meats and other foods on the platter. The Gyro was superb! The portions were large enough for substantial late night snacks. Mixed drinks were a bit expensive, but it's not uncommon or unexpected in a tourist environment. I came here for dinner with my bachelorette party. The girls really treated us for my special occasion, I felt very taken care of and I love the Mediterranean beach club vibe of the restaurant. Every detail seemed really thought out and chic. The food was really reasonably priced for the large portion sizes. I ordered the lemon chicken piccata and the sauce was tart and somewhat light. There were a perfect amount of capers and the chicken and rice were well cooked. Cool little bar with very good vibes. This is in greektown on the corner so you really can miss it. It's been awhile since I've been home and in greektown so this was new to me. But personally I thought this was a really good thing to happen to come across. The bartenders were super cool. I have zero complaints about that. They made drinks that were custom to what I was looking for and they had good conversation. Outside of that. We had a really good time just kicking it at the bar. We actually went back a couple of times on the same weekend. The building itself, all the decorations are beautiful. They have some wine in the back so I know that there's a wine list. That's probably pretty cool. There's plenty of space and plenty of seating outside of the bar even though the bar is actually a pretty decent size. There's actually an upstairs as well, but at the same time the upstairs is only open during certain hours. So keep that in mind. If you come around night time, you'll definitely notice things happening on the top. They have a really good happy hour so I want to make sure I put that out there. First time I went was happy hour, it was really good. I didn't do any food but we did do some martinis because they were discounted. Although I would have paid for a price for them that day too. I would definitely spend a block on this spot. I actually want to go ahead and try upstairs just to see what it looks like and see what the vibes are. Service was good, but unfortunately the food and value were disappointing. The salmon was overcooked and very salty. I mentioned this to the manager, but was given only a small discount and did not eat the salmon. There were also issues with the menu descriptions. The menu photo showed the lamb chops served with potatoes, but they came with rice. The salmon photo showed rice, and although I paid an additional charge to substitute potatoes, the salmon was still served with rice--and I was charged for the potatoes on the bill. First time here since it has been changed from the Delmar. Major upgrade! The ambiance is beautiful and modern with cozy vibes. Perfect for a night out with friends or a cute date night. Let's get into the food: Appetizers: We had the Greek Salad, which we enjoyed the fresh veggies and delicious Greek dressing. The Fried Calamari with Chipotle Aioli. Then, the Trio Dip with Hummus, Spicy Feta, Tzatziki with Pita. All of dips were delicious! Main course: Seafood Pasta: flavorful, seasoned to perfection. You can literally see the flavor. I asked for no octopus but I think they forgot my scallops as well. All I had was shrimp, but it was still delightful. Branzino: buttery, succulent and melts in your mouth! Also, it was interesting to watch the deboning process. Braised Lamb: The lamb was extremely tender and over the mashed potatoes in red wine reduction made it incredibly rich and comforting. It's a great place for groups and small get togetherness. 1. The bartender was super friendly and very accommodating. Ahhh the old Delmar.... You'd never recognize it. You can see every bit of renovation because this spot is absolutely beautiful. Sat at the bar per norm and had my Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest of the year. The music pumping electronic music, the staff buzzing around completing drink orders, and Lions football on the horizon on a crisp early not quite fall day. It was beautiful. The staff was absolutely spectacular. The restaurant was actually ready for the day and was fully staffed, never had to wait for anything. Oktoberfest at my neck and call. Seafood pasta was ordered and seafood pasta was eaten and it was absolutey OMG Yummy!!!!!!! - did you see how many exclamation points? So damn good. Aesthetically pleasing and fantastically delicious. What more could you ask for. They do have a rooftop patio, didn't make my way up there but it looks lovely from street level. My party of four was so looking foward to a relaxing evening in Greektown eating good food and enjoying the company of friends. Unfortunately, we chose Mati as our place to do that and it was anything but the experience we hoped for! While some of the food was fine, the service was atrocious and we had to send an entire entree back because it had been sitting under a heat lamp for at least 30 minutes. In my 50 years of going to restaurants, I've never had such bad service and mediocre food and yet had a 20% gratuity added to the bill automatically. Even our credit card was lost between the table and the cash register. It is impossible to state just how bad the service was. And worse yet, when a manager was requested, she did absolutely nothing. Our drinks were wrong, we had to continually ask for them and there was no accountability at all. If you are in Greektown, steer clear of Mati. The food is ok, but the service is terrible and worse yet, they know it and don't seem to care. read more

We visited Mati in Detroit for dinner tonight for the first time and it was surprisingly delicious! We Sat at the bar and the bartender, Kendall, made the best old fashioned (used the good Luxardo cherries not the cheap ones). It was delightful discussing bourbons and gin with her, as she was very knowledgeable. I ordered the chicken medallions, and they were nice and thin, very tender, and flavorful. It was almost too much for me to finish, but they were so good I didn't want to stop. My husband had the sword steak and said it was fantastic. The place is new, very clean, with a fun casual vibe. Really on the fence about this place. Some food was excellent, some was marginal..and the wait staff varied from pleasant and welcoming to rude and neglectful. We were seated by very upbeat staff (including a nice gentleman who I assume is the manager/owner) at a nice table in a modern, upscale atmosphere. Then we waited an inordinate amount of time for the waiter to take our order and had another long wait to get our drinks, once ordered When the food arrived, the grilled octopus was fantastic--prepared perfectly, as were the scallops...both were excellent! The braised lamb shank, on the other hand, was not: three of us ordered that and three were disappointed with them as they were dry and, in spots, somewhat leathery. The shanks were served on a bed of allegedly mashed potatoes...one of us found a significant chunk of undercooked potato in her plate, which even further detracted from the dish. I've had braised lamb shanks at Greek restaurants across the land and around the world, and these were simply not up to snuff. Our waiter presented as if she barely had time to speak with us, even though the restaurant was not busy at the time. She did not earn the 20% tip that is automatically added to the bill, even for our little 4-top! I get that waiting tables is tough, having done it myself, but this practice, of automatically adding 20% to the meal, rewards mediocrity and by itself is enough to keep us from returning to Mati. Pay your wait staff a living wage and let us decide what the tip looks like. Add in the unfortunate lamb shanks, and you can understand the two star rating. read more

We visited MATI for the first time in Detroit last night. The food was decent, but the experience was overshadowed by staff. Our server came to the table and did not introduce herself nor greet us at all. She simply asked what we wanted to drink. When she came back I asked if she was our server for the night and she blandly said yes. Her poor attitude would not have upset me except for the fact that when we did order she was not the one to bring the food out to us. And once our food came, she didn't come back to our table for 30 minutes. The restaurant had a lot of potential but the staff left my boyfriend and I very disappointed. The bill then had a 20% gratuity attached to it and we realized that is why she was so lazy. Why do your job if you know you'll get the tip no matter what? read more

Our 1st visit to this place last night. The food and service are both great here! I highly recommend it. I had the greek salad and the part i liked the most was the generous, chunky feta cheese! Excellent and Thank-You! The Oompa Cheese appetizer is always a favorite, and was delicious! A friend had the Branzino whole fish. Our excellent server deboned it perfectly and I tasted it. Really excellent. Another friend had the Palomino pasta and loved it, but bear in mind it's spicy. The construction in Greektown is a turn-off but I hope people will persevere. So many great places here, and this is one of them! We parked in the Greektown parking garage across from the Atheneum Hotel. Other than a map, I did not see any parking suggestions on Mati's website, which would be helpful for many. Check this place out! read more
