Took my friend here from out of town on Thursday and she loved it. The drinks were the best we had all night and our server Nick really made our experience amazing! We loved the intimate lighting which created a calm, mysterious vibe. I walked around to find a place to just relax and chill. I end up finding this location. It was not easy to find because the sign was only on the door. I found out that you need reservations excluding the bar. There was a couple of people leaving so we were in luck. This place makes many specialty drinks and the bar people know what they are doing. Located in the Shinola hotel, it's easy to miss when you look for it, and has a cozy speakeasy vibe once you're there. So I found this on a whim and I was not unhappy in my decision. This is a speakeasy type of establishment. It's very dark and dim so it could be intimate so it's not for a turn up type of situation. So now, you have to find street parking because there isn't necessarily free parking downtown Detroit, but we know that. Get out of the car, there's a number place you can walk around. If you seen our reviews before, you know that I like speakeasies and hidden bars so this definitely fit the bill. You come in and it's dark like I said, but it's also pretty beautiful. They have neon lights and couches for seating as well as the bar top. I went with family and I ordered a couple Irish espresso martinis, they came out pretty decent. The bartender actually got to talk to us a little bit. So I appreciated the customer service as well. Overall, this will be a nice little duck off. If you want to find something that's a little more quiet around the city of Detroit. When I go back home I would definitely go back. I feel like we only sat at the bar and got a couple of drinks so I didn't really get to full experience as far as sitting down in the couch and lounge area and kicking back. I liked the Christmas lights addition as the last time I was here it was a bit too dark inside for me. This was a perfect mix. My husband and I grabbed a last minute reservation after a cold and windy Tigers game. The Tiki Pop Up was a surprise and exactly what Downtown Detroit needs in the cold grey winter. The decor felt like you walked into old school Tiki Bar from the 50s, it was perfect. We ordered two rounds of drinks and loved them all. My husband's Favorite was the garage themed one( I'm sorry I can't remember the name) but it came in a CAT oil filter themed Tiki glass. I loved the blue Gin Martini called Model M-Martini. The staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and attentive without feeling rushed or hovered over. We ordered small plates of lobster rolls, and my husband said they were just as good and f not better than in Maine. First they were open on Christmas when we had no where else to go. We shared a lobster roll and the Frenchie burger (which came with fries). Second, I think it may have been the tastiest burger I've ever had. It had raclette, caramelized, onions, and a dijonaisse sauce that was so tasty. The fries were super skinny just how I like them. The drink menu was very extensive... a lot to choose from and I could tell they had a master bartender behind the bar... she was setting fires and all types of foolishness! I had the "root beer fizz," probably slurped that down in a minute... it was excellent. This place elevates and checks off every box. This bar is located in the Shinola Hotel. Gorgeous from the moment you walk in. Ask front staff for directions and or you just might miss the door to enter. Inside is a well Manicured, great vibe of a place that just so happens to make great drinks and solid food. The bar tenders are some of the nicest I met. Thoroughly enjoyed their recommendations and DELICIOUS drinks! I'm still salivating. Smooth, but well balanced. Believe me you feel the alcohol. The food... hit or miss. The lobster rolls were a gross disappoint. Small, lobster was far from fresh, and flavor just meh. Would pass next time. Deviled eggs had crab in it, but wasn't enough me to say it was worth it. The fries, olives, and Brussels were soooo good! Would order again in a hurry. Loved this place. A friend and I were checking out different bars in Detroit. We were excited to try Evening Bar because of the "secret" entrance and feel of the bar. We were slightly disappointed because the door was just open, which took away from the effect. We were greeted by a very nice host and he explained the menu. However he asked if we'd like sparkling or mineral water and we just assumed it was part of the ambiance. One of us got sparkling and one mineral, only to each get a bottle of water delivered to the table. We soon realized no one else had this and they were walking around with pitchers of water. When we got our bill our waters were $7 each. Had we known we wouldn't of gotten it. When I mentioned my frustration to the waiter about the miscommunication he was just like, "okay". Clearly we don't go to places like this often so, am not used to this option. We felt it should've been explained, just like the drinks were. The drinks were definitely over priced too, but we did kind of expect that. The drinks were unique and tasty. I had the Let's be Buds cocktail and it was really good, my friend had the creamy lemonade which was very different but, also good. Stopped by last night with two other couples. Drinks were excellent. Two of our party had the NA Strawberry Soda and loved it!

I went a few weeks ago and was prepared for this to be a new favorite. The ambience of the bar is nice with a dark look, fire place, and little sections that felt like little living rooms with couches and chairs around coffee tables. It could have just been an off night for their team, but I won't be back based on my experience with the drinks, food and staff. Almost all cocktails were not good and our group switched to beer or wine. We sent one cocktail back because it tasted like an ash tray, and nobody in our party of six was willing to drink it. I haven't ever sent a drink back before, but there was something clearly wrong with this one. The other drinks were drinkable, but not good. We tried the eggs, fries and lobster rolls. These were all fine and nothing was wrong with them, but they were underwhelming. Our server did not seem interested in helping us. They initially did not take the drink we sent back off the bill, but eventually told me a number of people send it back. I believe it's called the bitter pop, which I think she said contains every type of bitters the bar carries, although the menu said "amaro rabarbaro, vanilla, ginger ale." It was hard to flag our server down although they were not busy helping others, and they didn't check in on how things were going. For the price, I would instead recommend drinks at Grey Ghost, Selden Standard or Highlands. read more

I typically love this bar, love the high end speakeasy feel. It normally has such a great atmosphere. Unfortunately, They recently turned the beautiful bar into a tiki bar with a straw tiki hut and fake greenery and string light hanging from the ceiling. Totally ruins the feel of the place. Everything I hoped it would be and more! I walked through this lovely little bar in the summer of 2019, but didn't stop for a drink. I've been wanting to go back ever since, but things are so different now thanks to the pandemic. Lucky for me, this gem reopened four days before we went. I couldn't get a reservation and we took our chances. Walked in around 7pm on a Sunday and was greeted by the sweetest man who asked if we had reservations. We, of course, did not. What I didn't know is that there are other tables around the corner from the bar stools. We were graciously sat at an intimate table across from the fireplace. Our server came over immediately and gave us drink menus. The cocktails are well mixed and the bartender (who is a doll) happily went off menu for me. We sipped our drinks and enjoyed the fireplace in the dimly lit room. Loved every minute. The service here is impeccable! What a lovely night thanks to the staff. Cannot wait to return. read more

The first time I tried to visit Evening Bar was as a walk-in during the pre-COVID world, and the host was pretty snooty and didn't even give my wife and me the option to get on the waitlist. I found his attitude pretty off-putting and had vowed never to go back, but some friends insisted on trying it so we made a reservation a couple weeks ago. I'd say that, while the decor is appealing -- dark and sexy -- that's about all that was impressive to me. The drinks were a bit pricier than other popular cocktail bars in metro Detroit like Sugar House, The Oakland, and Two James, but I don't think they were as good. I tried three cocktails: She Don't Want Love (probably the best one I tried, I'd give it an A-), Singapore Sling (decent, but nothing remarkable... C+), and the Rye or Reason (*hated* it and so did my wife... F). It has the same exclusive, "hard to get into," sexy date night vibe as Bad Luck Bar, but the cocktails aren't nearly as good as BLB (which also has pricier cocktails, but worth it). Service was friendly, and relatively quick for a craft cocktail bar, so I'll give them that. Honestly not sure if I'd go back -- maybe once they change their seasonal cocktail menu? Or maybe if a friend absolutely insists? I'd probably tell them to try Bad Luck Bar first, though! read more

Still just not sure what happened here. Great weekend, stayed at the Shinola, soaked up a whole lotta highly-polished Detroit that didn't exist when I lived in a loft above Niki's in the 90's. I couldn't afford the monthly parking, and I ran up quite a debt from parking tickets. Fun to return for a weekend as a tourist with money to burn. Picture this: we slip in the entrance from the Shinola hotel, in back, near the bar. It's later--maybe a little before midnight--and our group spots two friends sitting at the bar. We chat. Music is so loud, we can't hear what the bartender is yelling at us, but he's agitated. I think he says (essentially): "I can't serve you if you are standing in the aisle..." No worries, amigo. We spot a couple small empty tables behind us, so we ask: "Can we sit here?" I think we asked three, maybe four times. We got some hand-waving, some indiscernible shouting, and what sounded like a response of: "I can't serve all of you, if you sit at the table, you'll get a waitress". Sounds good. Our friends leave their stools at the bar and join us at the tables, but we're not done yet. Same bartender is yelling something over and over, but it's even less likely that we can hear him given the distance and volume of the music. He is gesturing wildly, screaming, clearly frustrated. I can't make it out, so I shrug it off, happy to be done with him. A friend walks over to find out what's up. He returns with a hat. The bartender insisted we take "our hat" with us, so our friend took it. It's not our hat. He just wanted to avoid watching this guy have an aneurism right there in front of us. We chat as a group for a couple minutes, when a manager(?) host (?) leans in and says: "I have a reservation for this table." The two spots at the bar are now occupied, thereby screwing our two friends who were unfortunate enough to run into us, so we all just...leave. The Detroit of the 1990's was not nearly as pretty as this Detroit, but it was a whole lot friendlier. read more
