If I could give it a zero I would. I am an executive on business and staying at the Shinola hotel. I had some colleagues visiting with me. We found this awesome place and didn't realize that you need to have a reservation for the bar. The manager on duty was very rude to us for simply asking if we could be accommodated! It is not always the message but your delivery. I have 6 businesses and over 500 employees. No matter if we are short handed or not, I cannot afford to be curt with my guests. We were able to get a spot for 2 people within a half hour on a Saturday night(!), and even though it was pretty busy we didn't feel overwhelmed. The hosts were very engaging without being annoying, and the wait staff was hustling around with purpose. The drinks were great, my partner had the "Perfect Timing" and I had the "Death in the Afternoon" which I'd only recommend to people who like the taste of licorice(Liquorice? stupid Grammarly). Our only critique would be about the music volume level, which made it incredibly difficult to carry on a conversation. However, I personally enjoyed the playlist and song selection. read more

My new favorite bar in Detroit, I am in love! Such an awesome and interesting place tucked away in the new Shinola Ally Way (this is what I am calling it). My boyfriend and I were walking through when we came across the Evening Bar. We popped our heads in and it just looked so interesting and inviting that we just had to go in. We didn't have to wait for a table at 11pm on the 4th of July. The service we received here was out of this world. I wish I got the name of the woman that took such great care of us and made us feel so welcome. We were really able to enjoy our time there and felt so relaxed, kind of like we were hanging out in someones fancy basement or something. Cool underground vibe with spot on cocktails that are meant to be sipped for a while (ie heavy pours of etoh). It's a part of the Shinola hotel but it has a back alley entry that matches the shady feel of the place. Luckily we were able to snag a spot without waiting and got a very expensive but delicious hot dog to soak up the booze and the sadness of having our baseball game rained out. A cool little speakeasy in downtown Detroit (is it just me or have there been more and more of these opening up recently)! This is located inside the Shinola Hotel. The place is dimly lit and great place to go for date night. The staff was super accommodating, we ended up having a few more people to our reservation and they were able to help us out. That being said, reservations are definitely needed as this place is small and pretty busy on the weekend. They had plenty of drink options and all of them better than the next. The drinks were a little expensive when compared to some other places but pretty delicious. read more

We went there on a Saturday evening so it was quite busy but we put our name in for the waitlist and were able to relax in the Shinola lobby in the meantime. I really enjoyed our night not only because I loved my drink (their play on a Moscow mule) but mainly because the service was so nice, both in the lobby and the bar. It made for such a chill and enjoyable atmosphere. The music was on point, loud enough to fill the space but at the same time I could have a conversation and easily hear the other person. It is rather small so if you have a larger group, I recommend making a reservation. The cocktails we ordered were delicious and the food, even better. We got the herb fries and truffle dog only since we had dinner reservations somewhere else. Both were SO good (I'm obsessed with fries and hot dogs) and I wanted to order more. Everyone here was also super nice from the moment you put your name down until you're actually served (unlike some snobby spots that I won't name). It's almost like a little speakeasy because you have to enter from an alley...an alley that looks like a movie set! Literally, everything about the Shinola hotel, including this bar, is gorgeous and sleek. Evening Bar has everything going for it- cool music, attentive management, dark lighting, and stiff drinks. My only issue was the choice of vodkas were limited. I'm not sure if you can eat anything here, but it's great for a nightcap, so long as you like whoever you're with. read more

But was told as soon as I sat down that dinner ends at 955p. So had to go without dinner. If I had know this I would have stayed in my room and ordered room service at 945. My daughter and son-in-law came up from Alabama to spend Christmas with us in the "D"- so we decided to treat them to a day/ night around downtown and booked two rooms at Shinola. We also reserved a table one week before at " The evening Bar" we we arrived "10 minutes " early they said " not a big deal " and to wait in the lobby and they will text us when table will be ready. We waited for at least an hour after our reservation time ! (AFTER I HAD TO INQUIRE TWICE) after we FINALLY got seated- another hour for our four drinks ! We considered ordering some food but soon came to our senses. BTW- a couple came in after we finally got seated and crowbared thier selves into a seat without waiting even 1 minute. We stayed at Shinola Hotel over the Christmas holidays which was lovely. We had a reservation at Evening Bar on Christmas Day for 7pm. My party was myself and my 16 year old daughter. We were brought to a table by a very confused bartender (who thought that my reservation was for 7 people not 7pm) and a female server came over and asked our water preference. Upon her return my daughter asked her a question about the lobster rolls and she VERY rudely asked to see her ID. I inquired why she required ID to order lobster rolls and the waitress again very rudely explained that this was an age 21 and over establishment and that we would have to leave. I asked to speak to the manager who was of little help and was CERTAIN that the restaurant website CLEARLY stated that there was an age requirement for service, which was incorrect. When we arrived there were two police officers at the door so perhaps there were some issues with serving under aged patrons or something similar prior to our arrival. Once we were redirected to the hotel lobby under the guise that we could order all the same items as Evening Bar, I attempted to order the Clarified Penicillin which I was then informed was not available. When I instead asked for a glass of champagne the female server said "Did you mean prosecco? Most people are really just looking for prosecco". I confirmed that I did indeed want champagne and was aware of the difference between the two. We ate a complimentary order of lobster rolls (courtesy of the manager) and a couple of orders room temperature french fries. When I asked to order the stuffed olives, I was informed that they were also not available. We left completely unsatisfied and proceeded to eat the tasty snacks found in our room to round out our "dinner". Thank you Evening Bar, for one of my worst dining experiences to date. To be clear, nowhere on either the hotel website or Evening Bar website does it indicate that service is restricted to patrons of a certain age. It was a humiliating experience to be asked to leave your establishment, and handled so rudely by your completely inept staff. Merry Christmas to you all. read more

Let me set the tone of our evening. Friends were visiting from NYC and we all got together , went to the DSO , dinner at another restaurant not affiliated with Shinola. Our friends invited us up to see the room . All I can say is amazing, beautiful and so very cool . Loved it , we were jealous that we weren't staying there. But here's were the night took a bad turn. The wine in there room fridge had been tampered with and was filled with water . We called the front desk to inform them of this .....pause .....longer pause . No solution was offered. Other than room service. I felt obligated to take care of drinks since they bought dinner and let us check out their amazing room . So I went down to evening bar . Very busy and ultra hip vibe to it , I made my way up to the bar , 3 bartenders dressed very cool and hip just looked me up & down . Gut instinct I knew something was wrong. So I asked if I could get a bottle of wine and couple cocktails? " no standing service " I'm a bit slow so I asked , I'm sorry ? " we won't serve you standing " " get a table " so I made my way to the hostess and asked if I could get table or seat at the bar? " nope we're completely book for the night " I then said all I want it to take a bottle of Wine and couple cocktails up to my friends room . " why didn't you say you were staying here go back to the bar and they will serve you " Now I'm back at the bar , and I'm still just standing, out of the 3 bartenders only one could bring himself to talk to me a second time . I again placed the same order, I got the wine ( never was offered wine list ) I guess white or red is all they need to know . Well I know this is running on but it's so bewildering to me I just have to share. So there I am with the bottle of wine 2 cocktails. Me may I have a tray or carry these on and could you please uncork the wine and not to be a pain could I possibly get 2 wine glasses? He did uncork the wine , I was pointed to the wall behind me to get as many wine glasses as I needed . My take away from this experience is we Are not what Shinola is looking for . My partner and I didn't not mention this to our friends because I Wanted them to have a good impression of Our city . I was so let down and insulted, We were both so excited when we heard you were opening a hotel . Last year I got my partner a Shinola watch , he was so happy to get it to. But what a huge let down , it's ok for me to buy one of your watches just as long as I leave and don't hang out amongst the A list crowd , and referring to your employees. read more

Great interior. Somewhat "hidden" in the back of the Shinola hotel and easier to enter from the alley. The cocktails are mainly in the +$15 range so slightly on the higher end for Detroit. The have several beers on tap as well which is what we had. We decided to try their food and ordered the L'ill Lobster rolls ($15) which were very small, had almost no flavor and to be honest were a complete waste of money.
