This bar is located on the 3rd floor of The Whitney. We stopped for a drink (or two) while we waited for our table to be ready. Service was awesome, ambiance was amazing, seats were super comfortable and above all, the drinks were perfect! I had the Old Fashioned and my wife had The Witching Hour cocktail. The ghost bar is one of my favorite places to get a cocktail. You can also dine up on the third floor and rooms adjacent to the bar. The menu is different than the Whitney but quite good. The signature cocktails on the menu are delicious so you should definitely try one while you're there. I hear it is haunted, so if you're into that, look around while you are there. We have been to the Whitney several times. I have enjoyed tea and the tour. I have had dinner, I have been to the garden parties. But this was my first time to the Ghost Bar. Currently, the ghost bar is only open to diners. So if you aren't dining there, you can't just go up and have a drink. We chose to come after dinner. It is a small and elegant space. You definitely wouldn't be able to sit at the bar if it were a busy evening. But we got lucky. They do have a special bar menu and a dinner menu specific to the bar, and a happy hour. So, I assume the change is temporary due to staffing shortages because of covid. I chose a new cocktail called "Dressed to Impress" and he stuck with his usual gin and soda. We enjoyed the ambience. A gentleman came over and played the piano. We chatted with the bartender for a bit and he got a can of their signature beer, The Ghost of Whitney" to go. This was the perfect way to end a perfect evening! Birthday festivities are definitely not over though. We have quite a fun June planned! And an amazing summer!! I really used to love this place, but the inconsistent quality of food and cocktails made it a mediocre to disappointing experience. They need a more knowledgeable bar staff to up their game, midtown Detroit is teeming with substantially better establishments with superb cocktails and at much more competitive prices. Unimpressed. After many years of having a trip to the Whitney on my bucket list, this experience was lackluster. The Ghost bar is on the 3rd Floor and is rather small, extremely dark and kind of eerie, hence the name I suppose. On a Saturday evening when we arrived at 7:15pm there was only one other bar patron. We snagged a few spots and was "greeted" by a rather sour cranky old bartender. He was not friendly, welcoming or excited to be there. He never engaged us or really spoke to ya at all. I never understand went people in the hospitality industry behave like this. We ordered our drinks and were disappointed to see that at $14 a drink they were premade! Meaning he opened a jar poured them into our martini glasses and viola! If I am paying $14 for a cocktail it better be freshly made and cold, this was neither. There is absolutely nothing about this experience that would make me want to come back. Which is sad because I've always wanted to come to the Whitney for dinner or brunch. read more

This is a really neat spot for drinks. My friends and I have been at the Whitney for Sunday tea and most recently we returned for drinks at the Ghost Bar on the top floor. Note there is a dress code to be admitted but the ghost bar doesn't require reservations. The drinks were served with impressive presentation. The appetizers were a bit expensive and not great for sharing 4 ways. One came with only 3 servings and then we awkwardly had to decide who gets the short end of the stick and figure out the bill split to be fair as well since it was so expensive. I was so excited to go there with my friends. They have never been to the Ghost Bar. I have been many times I called ahead because it was during Christmas time to make sure it was OK to go. I pay for parking and waited for my friends, I was so embarrassed because they would not let us in even though I had called ahead. We ended up going to Wright and Company because we couldn't get in. Very mixed feelings about the Ghostbar. Awesome place, mediocre drinks and service. The place is amazing. Absolutely beautiful house with rooms full of personality. The wood and decor show that old school class that's so hard to find. Walking in, we were greeted warmly and told the way to the Ghostbar. We take our time taking in the paintings and ambiance. The third floor of home to the Ghostbar. The bar is smaller than you might expect with a few tables for two around it. You might not want to come here with a large party. We were a party of three, so we sat down in an adjacent room--the absinth room. The room was chilly since it jutted partially out of the house and had huge windows. The fireplace in the room doesn't work. We walked over to the bar for drinks, but the bartender didn't seem eager to help us out. We got a little worried that this was not going to go well, but honestly the service was impeccable from then on. I had the "witching hour" and my cousin had the "boulevardier," their version of a Manhattan. I wanted to like me drink but couldn't do it. The drink is sour (not bitter) from the heavy citrus. To compensate for this, the rim of the martini glass is kissed with sugar. The sugar balances the drink, or attempts to. When your lips hit the glass, your get this intense sweet sugar, then you tip and drink this sour cocktail. It just doesn't work. My cousins signature Manhattan was equally awkward with way too much bitters. The one brilliant spotlight was the crab cake. It took a while to get to us, but it was great and different. Your typical crab cake is this hockey puck thing with lemon and tarter sauce. This was a ball like thing with a sweet sauce. You wouldn't think it'd be good, but it was great. Overall, I'm not sure I'd return for drinks. I would like to return for dinner and see what else their menu had to offer. read more

The ghost bar had a cozy atmosphere however the servers were not good at greeting people or going up to tables so we had to get our drinks from the bar. The cocktail with absinthe and champagne is extremely intense and comes out on fire... So beware This bar would be great for a date. They play live music on the weekends and provide tours. read more

Very cool building with lots of interesting architecture and siderooms to explore. Very easy to grab your drink and just explore the place, assuming you can get them. When we went, there were only 3-5 couples and the 2 bartenders seemed very frazzled and stressed for no reason. They were messily pouring drinks, opening and closing cabinets loudly, and it took quite a while to get served. The bar is on the third floor and you can just walk up without really checking in. There is a dessert parlor on the second floor which you can put your name down for and they have pretty delicious creme brulee which is bruleed at the tableside! The bread pudding was enjoyable and unique because they use croissant bread. The carrot cake was a little dry but enjoyable, nothing really distinguishing it from any another place however. Overall, worth a trip to check out the ambiance but not necessarily a place to hit regularly. read more

Tucked away on the third floor of the Whitney, this is an interesting use of space on a floor that I can imagine would otherwise go unused while awaiting private event bookings. It's seat yourself on a first come, first served basis. My party of 6 managed to find seating immediately, but snagged the last area for a group our size. There is a main room with the bar, which has a few tables, and two side rooms. One called the "absinthe room" which is dark and seemed a little too cozy for our taste. We ended up in the other room which sat us and one other party. I really don't think this bar can seat more than 35 people. But we did find a table and had a great time. The service was a little slow, had they been quicker they'd have gotten another round of drinks out of us. They were also a bit clumsy, spilling my drink over the side of the glass and onto my clothes, and bringing my friend a second glass of wine that he didn't order. The drinks were well liked by the group. My manhattan, which I asked to be served up in a cocktail glass, had some ice cube shards floating in it, which was strange, as if the bartender took the lid off of the shaker. All in all this is a great place to grab a cocktail before or after dinner. It's a bit in the middle of nowhere, however. I wish I could walk to dinner, but the only decent restaurant is in the lobby of the same building. I feel generous giving 4 stars, but I'd come back because I could have a casual conversation with my friends. read more

Firstly, this place always shows closed on Yelp. It's not actually closed. It's very much open. This is clearly one of the sweetest finds in Detroit. Whitney is a super fine dining place and the ghost bar is their bar on the third floor. Ambience: the bar is set inside a really old mansion owned by Mr and mrs Whitney. The entire place has high ceilings, antique windows, wooden flooring and walls, and even some clandestine doors which one may discover if one requests a tour of the property. Very classily designed. Drinks: we had the duke of Detroit, which was a speciality cocktail. It was an interesting drink, clearly not for the light hearted. The bar tender gareth has some serious style and he adds a lot of coolness to the drink making process, which he makes interactive with the guests. I took a beer to drown my duke :) (yes they have a whole bunch on tap) Food: we ate the bruschetta and the crab cakes. The crab cakes were very very very good. Price: it's not your place around the corner. It's a proper fine dining place so expect a full priced menu, but trust me, it's worth the money you spend. Oh yes, they have a valet for 6 bucks. The bar stools are quite heavy/bulky making it difficult to move as close to the bar as I would have liked. It made eating difficult, since I was so far from the bar. We visited the Ghost Bar on a night out with friends. This bar is located on the upper floor of the Whitney in Detroit, which is a beautiful building! The atmosphere was intimate and soft jazz filled the air as we enjoyed our time. The bar floor offers various rooms with seating and also includes a delicious looking dessert menu to fit your needs. Drinks are offered as specialty cocktails, wines, beer, and liquor. The drinks are on the higher end for cost; however, they are of good quality and add to the experience of attending the Ghost Bar. Be sure to dress a little nicer if planning to visit, as you are likely to see patrons in suits and dresses in attendance. Tours were also occurring when we were there, as the Whitney holds a unique history to learn about, if that is your type of fun. The restrooms are of particular need to mention, as they include seating rooms with large couches to enjoy your time as needed. What an amazing and beautiful spot! We stopped here for a drink before a performance at the DSO (it was just a couple blocks up Woodward, no more than 5 minutes). We waked in on a Wednesday night and there were plenty of open spots near the bar. There are multiple rooms, all unique and cozy. The place is simply gorgeous, make sure you explore around a little! My husband and I ordered a drink each. I had a gun based drink (can't remember the name) which was a very full martini glass. The boulevardier was one of the best mixed cocktails we've had! Despite the $13 price tag, the drinks were strong and a good portions! We also had an appetizer of calamari. It was nicely fried and paired with a lemon based sauce and strips of red pepper. The only thing taking this from a 5 star to a 4 star was the pricing. Two drinks, an appetizer and a decent tip put us over $50. None the less it was an extremely special place so I wasn't disappointed with our stop. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a unique and historic place! read more

My partner had a fantastically balanced Negroni. Chairs were comfy, atmosphere was awesome, bar tender was chatty but not overwhelming, and there even was an elevator to get up and down. This bar up on the third floor of the Whitney is a very different feel than most modern bars. When you reach the top floor there is an open area where the bar is located but the reset of the seating is off in side rooms. It makes it a great spot if you want to meat up and chart with a small or medium size group and not have your conversation down out by other bar noise. I met up with a group that were regulars, though it was my first time, and the bartender seemed to know them well, was friendly and helpful, and would come in from time to time to refresh people's drinks. All in all a great, and unique spot in Detroit though a little more expensive then I was expecting. read more

This is a really fascinating place in Detroit. The bar is located on the second floor of an old mansion. You feel like you are waking straight into a scene from the Great Gatsby. The prices are not cheap but they won't break the bank. You are definitely paying for the atmosphere but it is totally worth it. If you are in the city an have time I highly recommend it. What an awesome place, I am obsessed! I have been telling everyone about this place since I came and had a drink, and it's funny because no one has ever heard about it, but the Yelp reviews were really good, so I knew it would be a great spot. Anyway, from the outside it looks like an old house/place where they throw events, and I was confused why it was called a bar as it looked like an old historic site/restaurant when I first walked in. As a side note, I did not eat here, but I am definitely interested in eating here in the future. Anyway, we walked up the stairs to the second floor where the bar is located (so there is a bar, ah ha!). I walked around the upstairs and tried to take some pictures, for some reason many of them did not come out right (hmmm). I swore from the second we arrived here that the place was haunted (might be a direct result of the name 'ghost bar'). Anyway, a historic tour was going on, so we caught a few minutes of it before heading to the bar, having a drink and chatting with the bartender. At one point I went to the bathroom and swore there was someone else there in spirit and I'm not even into that type of thing!
