Pros: Very good coffee here. Definitely one of the best roasters in the valley. Space is big with a lot of indoor seating. Even have space to work on laptop if that's your vibe. Cons: It's a little louder than I'd like a coffee shop to be. Don't really dig the industrial space and vibe. They were playing tunes on a speaker, could have done without that, they were turned up to a level that wasn't uncomfortable to have a conversation above, but I had to be intentional about it. I asked for a recommendation on what to get, kind of hoping that he'd recommend his favorite, and it was kind of more of like a "what do you like in a coffee?", I don't know how to answer that question. For it to taste good? I think that's important. He wanted me to have like tasting notes that I enjoyed. That's layers too deep for me man. Especially before I've had coffee. I'm not a sommelier of coffee, I just drink the stuff. read more

This is one of our go-to coffee roasters. I personally like their latte with house made cashew milk, which is nutty and creamy. We've been buying their coffee bean several times and they are still good when we make coffee at home. read more

Cartel Roasting - CCL with an inch of room ‍ - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Tempe, Arizona

Fun rustic coffee shop located near Arizona State University Tempe. There is a small parking lot located on University across the street from Whole Foods. In the parking lot there is a lot of signage routing customers to the shop. The inside of the shop is really cute and it is huge! There is plenty of seating and tables and there is free wifi. Great place to just hang out or study. I ordered two Chai Lattes with oatmilk and an almond croissant. The barista was quick and I waited for just a few minutes. The chai was good, spices were delicious and flavorful. Perfect balance for morning wakeup. The almond croissant was sweet, flakes, and sticky. I am not usually a sweet croissant person, but I would definitely order this one again! Overall this is a great coffee shop with a fun vibe and a lot of options. read more

I went to Cartel Roasting today with my friend. I was definitely satisfied with the industrial ambiance and the service, but the actual coffee I got was quite disappointing. I got the Pumpkin CCL which was a little of an adventurous choice for me but I didn't taste any pumpkin at all. It was more akin to watered down coconut cream with barely any taste of coffee or pumpkin. My friend got the Maple Hojicha coffee and she was satisfied with it and I thought it tasted pretty good, but I was still disappointed with my choice. And it was $20 total for both coffees. I wish the business much success as I like the concept and the service but I don't foresee myself coming back. $20 not well spent in my opinion... read more

This was my first time at Cartel Roasting. I specifically wanted a pour over coffee while visiting family in the area, and they offer it. I was pleasantly surprised with the shop. It offers a variety of indoor seating options. They can accommodate a small group or the digital nomad. The music was a bit on the loud side which made carrying on a conversation a challenge. The coffee is tasty, and the food options, though limited, are flavorful. I opted for the lemon cake. Service was quick but lacked a personal touch. Staff were not rude but were not welcoming either. I'll definitely visit again. The industrial inspired space is part art gallery featuring local artists. Support local :) read more

I love Cartel Coffee. Such a comfy spot to sit on campus. I get the Pumpkin Latte the last few times I've gone. It's so good... it's a house made syrup and it's a really unique fall flavor. Not overwhelmingly sweet, which is hard to find for PSL's. The staff is kind and service is super quick. read more

I dropped by Cartel to grab a couple of bags of beans to take home. We love using their beans in our espresso machine due to them being so fresh. Our shots always pull so beautifully! As a bonus, when you purchase a bag, it also comes with your choice of a free drip coffee or a free cold brew. They have a large space to just hang out or work from on your laptop. They also offer fresh pastries that look delicious! Definitely check them out if you are looking for a good coffee. They have several Valley locations to choose from! read more

Came in only because I needed to go to the loo. But ended up having the best ice latte I've had in recent years!! The prices were surprisingly high though ... paid $6.75 for my latte. I'm visiting from the San Francisco bay area and feel bad that ASU students have to pay bay area prices for coffee :( read more

Service is efficient, in a very spacious and modern feeling setting. The fact that they do single origin cold brew made my day. I wish more places did this. Bought two types of beans to take home. Great coffee shop! read more

I love Cartel coffee and try to swing by one of their Valley locations from time to time. I have been drinking their coffee since visiting this location over ten years ago. Tempe is my hometown and this place is one of my old digs. It is located right down the street from ASU and Mill Ave. I recently visited here for the first time in forever and noticed that they have expanded into a bigger space. Cartel Roasting Co. has a menu that offers a little of everything like their signature coffee drinks, cold brew and teas. They also sell canned coffee drinks. My go-to is usually an Iced Latte, cold brew or just regular coffee. Cartel grew from a coffee cart to multiple locations across the Valley in less than twenty years. They are a Valley staple. I love their products and have always appreciated the smoothness of my Iced latte when I order one. Plus it is nice to support one of our local AZ coffee shops. This Tempe Cartel location has a nice vibe to it with all of the students hanging out and studying. read more

I will say the location is awesome. The inside is such a great space to work, meet, etc. the music vibe is excellent. The staff have a chill vibe hippy vibe. The only reason I gave 3 stars is because the coffee wasn't good. We ordered an iced latte and a mocha. Both were very milky and couldn't even taste coffee. I'll definitely go back to give another shot especially for the vibe. read more

While the coffee was decent I did not find it as good as other reviewers. I had a cappuccino and it was luke warm, milk was not steamed enough. Music was very loud making it unpleasant to stay long. read more

First time checking this place out! inside is very spacious with lots of seating spots. Honestly, a really good spot to go to work and study. The staff are really friendly and quick making drinks. Cartel is definitely a place I enjoy and stop at frequently. Every location is unique and yet similar. I used to live in the Tempe area so this location is a familiar space that is almost 'homey' to me. We had a quick stop and grabbed two cappuccinos to go along with a vegan cookie :) it was so delicious as always. read more

A good place for sitting and studying or a quick date; but a little too pricey for mediocre coffee. That is if you are a sweet type of coffee person like me. I feel like you are paying for the experience of the coffee art instead of the actual taste of the coffee. I asked the barista what the most popular hot latte was and he suggested the Vanilla Latte. I got an 8oz (which is typically like a kids size at Starbucks) and it was $5. So if you sip rather than drink, this is the spot for you. read more

The coffee is good and the pastries are good. The prices, though, are extremely expensive. $7.50 for a Danish, for example. I teach in the same ASU building as a Cartel Coffee branch. I would like to have coffee and something to eat there after teaching a class. Instead, I walk across campus to a competitor cafe across from my office. The quality is not as good but they serve reasonably-priced refreshments. I have a decent income. I don't know how students can afford Cartel Coffee. The cafe needs to look at its price structure. read more

This place was good. Right behind ASU campus which could be easily walked to. It is way bigger on the inside than how it looks on the outside with lots of seating. The menu is also very straightforward. I ordered a vanilla chai which was good nothing crazy. I also tried the latte and it was good not too sharp which I enjoyed. The service was also quick which I liked! read more

Coffee is good, good vibes. music is much too loud to consider this a study spot unless your headphone music is blaring. Having a conversation feels overstimulating as well. Cool ambience, would stay longer if the music wasn't so overpowering. read more

Was visiting Tempe and the only bad thing I can say is that I'm upset I found this place on my last day. The space is big, which you wouldn't assume based on the storefront. The staff are welcoming and this really feels like an inclusive oasis. I had a cortado and a pop tart and brought croissant for my teenager. Cortado was perfect, the pop tart was sweet home made nostalgia and my daughter gobbled the croissant. Lots of locals go here which is also a good sign. will be back if my kid end up going to ASU. read more

Great Coffee & Even Better Burrito - Cartel Coffee Hits the Spot. Cartel Coffee was super convenient since it's attached to Rise Uptown, and it ended up being one of our favorite morning stops during the trip. I ordered the cappuccino (made with oat milk), and it was delicious--super smooth and flavorful, just smaller than I expected. They offer a few milk options, which is always nice: oat, whole, 2%, and even cashew. We tried both oat and 2%, and both were great. Now, the breakfast burrito deserves its own shout-out. It seriously stole the show. The tortilla was perfectly crispy, and the filling--eggs, potato, cheese, and beans--tasted super fresh. It's actually brought in from a catering company called Mi Salsa, and you can tell they don't mess around with quality. I'd absolutely get it again. The drip coffee was strong and bold, maybe a little intense if you're used to something lighter, but it had a really good flavor. All in all, Cartel was the perfect little coffee spot to fuel up before a pool day or exploring the city. read more

The wifi is super spotty. Hard to get work done. Restroom is dirty as hell and it smells moldy. Not coming back.

This location was so charming, especially being right inside the ASU bookstore! The customer service was awesome from start to finish. My daughter and I walked up to the counter ready to order, and I knew I wanted a mocha--but I wasn't completely sure. Hunter stepped right up to the register, already fired up and ready to help. I asked him, "Do you think I want a mocha?" and without hesitation he said yes! We both laughed, and then he suggested adding vanilla, which had me completely sold. Then he started talking to my daughter about a couple of other drink options, and wow--he had me reconsidering my whole order! My daughter reminded me that I don't like prickly pear, but Hunter kindly let me sample it anyway. Sure enough, I still didn't like it--but he made it sound so delicious and refreshing that I almost believed I would! We left already planning our next visit just to see Hunter again. If you get the chance to have an encounter with him, take it! He truly knows the products and how to market them. And most importantly--the drinks were excellent!!! read more

What can I say! Coffee always taste better when you drink it with the Cartel. But seriously I love the friendly baristas and the cool interior vibe going inside. The coffee (in my opinion) is good but not great, and it's overpriced in comparison to other places. I do love the location and the vibe inside is great for a hangout. It was simply ok. Came across this coffee shop on a short visit to Tempe. Staff were not helpful at all & seasonal drinks could not be modified. Which okay I get it but at least take the time to explain to your guest of another alternative drink. Matcha was not it. Overall this shop did not leave a lasting impression. Great open space to hang out or catch up on work. Unfortunately I didn't think the food and coffee were good. Came on a Friday afternoon with my sister for a late breakfast. We ordered a matcha latte, latte, and a breakfast burrito. I felt my latte was on the weaker side. My sister thought the matcha was just OK. The burrito was the most lacking based on the price. Filled with eggs, potatoes and cheese, you needed the salsa to increase the flavors. read more
