I loved my experience at Cartel! I went for the first time last week. The indoor cafe is so spacious and the staff are very friendly. I went early enough in the morning that it was practically empty in the cafe so it was such a quiet and peaceful experience. Short and sweet review for one of my favorite local coffee shops in Arizona. Cartel just gets good coffee. Their drinks are always artfully crafted - and there's truly something for everyone on their menu. I stopped by this location twice during my recent week-long stay in Tempe. You'll almost certainly encounter a line at any time of day - but the baristas move quickly, and it's well worth the wait. My go-to order is their Single Origin Cold Brew, which is made in house and can be customized with whatever milk and sweetener you like. They also offer a Nitro Cold Brew if that's more your speed, along with several fun seasonal creations. This location is almost always busy with people studying or working or hanging out - but not so busy that you won't be able to find a table. I love that their decor stays true to that neighborhood coffee house vibe. I especially appreciate that they display local art and ceramics for guests to admire as they're waiting in line ... we loved something on display so much we took it home to Nashville with us! read more

Was looking for a good, not too crowded or small place to study. Was my first coffee shop that I studied in and was a perfect first choice. They do play music so make sure to bring headphones, although I did find myself turning mine off because they had a good playlist. Coffee selections are simple yet good (iced and hot options). I recently visited Cartel Roasting and was impressed by how spacious and inviting the atmosphere was. The service was friendly and efficient, which added to the overall positive experience. However, I was not particularly impressed with the quality of the coffee. It lacked depth and flavor, which was disappointing. The food was okay, but I felt it could have been better. Coffee flavor: excellent (latte and lavender honey iced latte) Size of coffee: one size only ...no large and my latte was a baby size. I would have to get two but at that point it was expensive enough. That is fine if the drink were bigger for the price I paid but ouch. Big big negative! Music: blaring for customers/ and bad timing for me as a customer as well as the toddler and his dad near me. Lyrics in a slow rap "F--k your sister, F---k you mother, F---k your assh---e!" Ummmm listen all you run a public place and from me to you all F you!! A business should be embarrassed to share songs like this to the public. I love Frank Zappa going up but I would never blast his music out to all type of people coming into my store! What are you thinking. Made me angry that you think it is ok. Service: I was asked if my drinks were to go. I said yes. When called up I got open paper and plastic cups but then it was up to me to find the lids and put them on. No drink carrier just move on. Was the feeling I got. Not their intention, but again I am writing a bad review based on First Impressions in hopes that they work harder in doing better. Clear up a few things and you could have a winner. Parking : they can't control but it is tight and didn't see really friendly back there. Staff recommended an iced latte with agave and cinnamon, and I loved it. Inside is nice, and walls are filled with local art, and positive words throughout from under glass tables to the entry wall, love the kind spirit. Only negative is that there is one restroom with one stall, there was a line the whole time, always someone waiting. read more

Cartel never disappoints, the coffee is out of this world, I always get the CCL because it's so unique I have not been able to find something similar at any coffee shop. I've frequented Cartel many times, Tempe and Scottsdale location. The Scottsdale location is much smaller, but offer couple tables, bench seating along with some high tops and small outdoor patio. Though it is intimate, service is friendly, beverages are tasty and the atmosphere is bright and open. Their breakfast burritos are tasty if you're looking for a quick bite and overall a great place to stop by or do some work. Ample free parking is available, being in old town and on the side streets, it's easy to get to and in a great location. read more

Ordered a cup from a tall dude who hadn't shaved his whiskers in what looked like years. Without asking my name or how my day was he shot me with an evil glare and proceeded to process my order and wrote "USA" on my cup... Very strange encounter... Not sure if he was being racist, "or what have you," as I am of Latino decent, however I wasn't offended as I could just tell he had something "dark" on his heart that he wouldn't speak on... My cup was stacked to the brim with ice and tasted pretty terrible... PLEASE proceed with caution into this establishment! On a lighter note the ladies working there were extremely friendly and the atmosphere from the customers were great, but that one tall kid spooked me to the bones. Cartel Coffee wins at ambiance. It's a great place to lounge and do work or meet someone. There's lots of college kids here getting things done or reading. However, the inside is super air-conditioned to the point that I was uncomfortable and the outside seating is covered with flies, so I didn't stay long. Their prices are a little outrageous, but I guess they can do that because they're on a school campus. The 8-oz is almost $6, and it is a tiny cup. Their coffee is pretty good, but it really does not blow my mind. I've tried their almond milk latte a few times now, and it lacks body and foam. It also leaves a sour aftertaste. It's not a bad coffee, but it isn't in my top ten in the city. read more

Ok, I am officially OBSESSED with the Chagaccino beverage at this coffee spot! The Chagaccino is a heavenly mushroom and coffee beverage that includes Chaga, cacao, cinnamon, vanilla, and monk fruit sweetener. I also added skim milk, so all in this drink was less than 100 calories. That's wild because it tastes so decadent it should be sinful to imbibe. The best part is it's also affordable at $5.50 for 12 oz. Unfortunately, the avocado toast I ordered with this drink wasn't as phenomenal. Met up with a friend for coffee and Cartel was the place picked. I haven't been to Cartel in a while outside of the one in the airport, so it was nice to come back and visit. After checking out the menu I went with an iced vanilla latte and it was a the perfect latte. Still dig the vibe of Cartel and they have plenty of seating. I have been a fan of Cartels for years and like I said it's the only coffee shop I visit when I am at Sky Harbor (its in terminal 4 C Gates). I felt like my iced latte was very much lacking in flavor. The espresso flavor was weak and barely there. I could not taste the lavender syrup at all. It tasted like a cup for milk for $7. The modern decor is nice and it's very spacious inside with lots of seating, but I was not a fan of the metallic tables. It was a bit annoying when my iPad kept sticking to the table when I was trying to work. I also wish it wasn't so dark so I could see better while working. I think this isn't a good study spot for me personally, it would be a better hangout spot. I think this could be a good coffee shop for others but it's just not for me. read more

i loveee the CCL! cartel is a staple in my routine whenever i visit arizona. it is such a delicious, reliable coffee spot. it is always busy and consistently pumps out good brews! i was so happy to find out they have a location in california because, now, anytime i'm driving thru palm springs i can happily order my iced latte. overall, highly recommend! my coffee snob boyfriend is a fan and my coffee loving mother was obsessed when we had her try it. the locations are trendy, clean, and tend to have really nice baristas that get your drinks out fast! read more

My first time here and it's so good holy moly. My fiancé and I ordered the Pom tonic and CCL both are extravagant. I can't pick a favorite and will definitely come back and try more! GOOD COFFEE SHOP NEAR ASU I always get a bit confused at coffee shops with simple menus. I asked the barista for a recommendation on what to order, and he recommended a vanilla latte. I expected a better recommendation, perhaps of something more unique to the cafe, but I didn't want to be a Karen and ask the question again. My vanilla latte was good, nothing spectacular though! I appreciate that they have glass cups if you order your drink for "here" to produce less plastic waste. Wow! I never asked for a refund at a coffee shop before but this was a special occasion. I asked if they had any gluten-free options and the girl said yes. So I ordered one. Once she processed my payment she told me that they actually don't have it. Unbelievable. So I had to ask for a refund and then just leave. She had to ask a manager to process it. So the manager came over and did not even acknowledge I was standing in front of her or why I was getting a refund. Some friendliness and empathy would have been nice. Overall the ambience is not very inviting. I expect coffee shops to be cozy. At least cozier than a Starbucks. This was not the case. Also, they are blasting music like it's a nightclub. Why? One of the absolute go-to spots for coffee not just in Tempe but in the whole Valley. The coffee itself is superb and tasty, whether you drink it black or jam packed with sweet stuff. It def can get busy at the normal times you would think, but it's worth the wait and they move pretty quickly behind the counter. Plus the vibe and general availability of diff types of seating for one or multiple always provides options. Parking is kind of tight which is the only reason I'm not giving a five, but for anyone who works on mill ave or attends ASU or lives in the neighborhood it's certainly top notch. read more

Wife loves her coffee and was looking forward to coffee in the AM. We were somewhat disappointed in the sizes and the prices. Two large coffees (6.75 each) almost $15!!? Told my wife we should of went to Circle K (they have one on every corner in Tempe,AZ). They only have two sizes 16oz and 10oz, that's a huge difference. I thought everything was very expensive and prices marked up. My wife got a large coffee with an extra shot, we usually use splenda, but they didn't have it, only raw sugar and Stevia. No heavy cream just half and half. My wife was very disappointed in her coffee and didn't even drink half of it. I got a large mocha, it was good. My thinking is if you going to charge high prices, give your customers more of a choice between sweeteners and cream and throw in a medium. read more
