I've been going to Cartel Coffee Lab stores since around 2014 and they've always served exquisite specialty coffee that is out of this world! The ambiance of the stores has always exuded cool, industrial, urban charm and coolness. I love being there. For about a year, I visited almost every workday and used it as a remote office while I worked on web design. I would describe the coffee as having a sweet flavor versus strong bitter espresso flavor. A little different than what I am used to for espresso. I think the interior is really cute and enjoyed doing some work here but I have to say the matcha I had was probably a 5/10. The bread was nice but I wish it was toasted it. FYI they only have 12 oz cups! The parking is limited and very small, was worried my car would get dinged. My husband is working in the area. He really digs Cartel coffee. They are even open in the morning early enough for him to grab a bite to eat as well. We meet here during his crazy schedules sometimes the girls and I can have a quick mini date with him so he can feel the love during all his hard work. Cartel makes him happy. The girls love to get the organic vegan hot chocolate! Can it get any better than that? I like their Sparkling Prickly Pear or herbal tea. read more

The pastry was very average. Long line but the service was quick without cutting corners. I got mine to go, but there are a lot of seating options if you're looking to chill. This is a coffee review so let me say this... The people are amazing!! Super nice and friendly. The place had lots of tables and work space....I appreciated that a lot!! However I don't go to a coffee house just for the workspace and people....I go for the coffee. I ordered a black coffee of which, if the coffee is so-so, I would add cream and sugar. This coffee was so bad the cream and sugar didn't help!! It was the worst coffee I ever tasted. It was bitter and acidic. A cup of Folgers would have been better and anyone who knows me knows how much I hate Folgers!! This is just my opinion.....what I love about coffee drinkers is that we run the gamut!! This is my favorite coffee shop to visit when I'm in Tempe. They always have friendly staff, there is ample seating, and the drinks and pastries are delicious. On my most recent stay in town, I visited two days in a row. Although there were other coffee spots closer to my hotel, I much preferred to walk a little further to Cartel. I don't get anything complicated, usually just a latte or cappuccino, but they're always great with none of that burnt taste that's easy to find at some coffee chains. Cartel always has only the best to offer not only in coffee but espresso drinks and yummy treats. They don't have any sit down options right now during covid but have created an amazing walk up ordering and waiting area. The service is always excellent and I never feel like I have to wait long for my beverages. One of my favorites is their chai (great flavor balance of spice and sweet) but their regular lattes are also delicious. Even the plain black coffee is to die for. I spent a lot of time here during my most recent trip to the Phoenix/Tempe area. The main highlight is the vibe. There is no shortage of seating and a few different rooms/sections to choose. It did not feel crammed at all, and the staff was very welcoming. Now for the coffee: I would quite honestly say it's my favorite coffee in the area. I tried a variety of drinks, but my favorite was the pour-over from Colombia. You have to wait a few minutes, but it's completely worth it. They also offer an americano, although it didn't appear on the menu. The espresso was a little darker than I normally prefer for an americano, but it works well in a latte. I also think they should offer a more geographically diverse set of pour over options. I'm a big fan of African beans, but they didn't have any on the menu. Nonetheless, I would come here everyday if I lived in the area. It's a great place to study and it's open really late, perfect for late-night coffee drinkers like myself! read more

First and last time coming to this place. I'm all for people bringing their pets into eating establishments..patio areas ONLY. The last thing I want is Fido's hair in my whipped cream topped pancake! So this morning we order our coffees and go to the side area to wait for them and see this chick with not one, but two shaggy dogs standing by the ice water area- she's pouring water into the drinking glasses and letting the dogs drink out of the glasses!!!!!!! The employees come over, pet the dogs, and just let the dog hair fly!!!!! I saw only one employee wash her hands. The other one had dishes in her hand, totally put her hands all over the dogs, then rinsed off the dish- no soap. Just some water. Heck no! This is unsanitary and a sickness waiting to happen. How about some hoof and mouth anybody?? This sounds like a job for the Health Inspector!!! read more

I always feel like the oldest hipster when I'm there but it is a very nice place close to ASU. I usually just get a cold brew with lots of room for cream and sugar. Coffee purists probably think that's terrible, but I like my drinks sweet. Came here with a friend who is in college and she thought it was pretty nice. There's plenty of room to sit and do homework if that's why you're there, or just hang out on one of the benches and chat. The caffeine content in that cold brew however must've been pretty high because boy did I feel it afterwards! If you want real coffee this is the place to go. You can actually taste the coffee not like other places that add all kinds of flavoring to make there coffee taste sugary and good but loose the actual coffee bean flavor. One of the best coffee places in the valley, hands down! Their coffee roasting is perfect, their branches are each consistent with their espresso and pour-over drinks. For coffee snobs, this place will be a jewel to admire, and for those who are coffee snobs that need to study, this is a great place! There are many tables and outlets, and this location is extremely spacious. It can get a little bit loud, so I would recommend that you have headphones. However, as the time passes, it begins to slow down and becomes much more of a study-friendly environment. The drinks here are mostly all standard sizes with two-shots of espresso, but you can get additional shots if you choose to. Another bonus of Cartel is that they do not charge for alternative milk, which is very unique as most coffee shops tack on a $0.25-$1.00 surcharge. Give this place a try! read more

Extremely cold. I've been here plenty of times and each time I visit, it's insanely cold to the point it's very uncomfortable and I end up leaving disrupting my studying. I've been here during the summer and thought that maybe it's set at cold temperature because it's hot. However, that's still the case during winter. Cartel serves a very lovely cup of coffee. I stopped in during a much needed break on a work trip. There's only so much robot made coffee one can consume before slipping into madness. They were roasted beans on site while my pour over was being crafted. This is awesome to see no matter how many times you stop into a coffee roaster. The whole place has a very "North Carolina" vibe to it for lack of a better description. There are very similar roaster/coffee shops in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area and Asheville. Going out of your way for shops like this are an experience worth having. I won't comment too much on my particular coffee since it will cycle as beans come in and out of season, but my drink was as I'd expect for the price and the quality was obvious. I tried the cold brew my friend ordered and it wasn't my favorite, but not withstanding my flavor preferences it had the clean flavor and clear color of a quality product. read more

Okay....I am self proclaimed coffee snob and for good reason. I drink a lot of coffee, make my own, and have to go find corporate coffee all the same...burnt tasting and dull. Not here. Good vibes that speak to "we just do coffee and we take it very serious". I drink coffee black as great beans should be and this was really good. Bright, fresh, and flavourful.
