Wow! I never asked for a refund at a coffee shop before but this was a special occasion. I asked if they had any gluten-free options and the girl said yes. So I ordered one. Once she processed my payment she told me that they actually don't have it. Unbelievable. So I had to ask for a refund and then just leave. She had to ask a manager to process it. So the manager came over and did not even acknowledge I was standing in front of her or why I was getting a refund. Some friendliness and empathy would have been nice. Overall the ambience is not very inviting. I expect coffee shops to be cozy. At least cozier than a Starbucks. This was not the case. Also, they are blasting music like it's a nightclub. Why? Heading to Starbucks now... read more

Excellent flat white, foam was suburb! & their chemical free decaf coffee & espresso was 10 outta 10.

One of the absolute go-to spots for coffee not just in Tempe but in the whole Valley. The coffee itself is superb and tasty, whether you drink it black or jam packed with sweet stuff. It def can get busy at the normal times you would think, but it's worth the wait and they move pretty quickly behind the counter. Plus the vibe and general availability of diff types of seating for one or multiple always provides options. Parking is kind of tight which is the only reason I'm not giving a five, but for anyone who works on mill ave or attends ASU or lives in the neighborhood it's certainly top notch. read more

My first time here and it's so good holy moly. My fiancé and I ordered the Pom tonic and CCL both are extravagant. I can't pick a favorite and will definitely come back and try more! The barista who took our order was so kind and helpful! We asked him for suggestions and he was extremely helpful and definitely recommended excellent drinks! Will be coming back! I also loved the music and vibe in the place! If I lived closer I would for sure study here! read more

If you dont like a strong coffee flavor or coffee flavor period, this is the place for you. Idk if it's the college kids or yupsters here, but the trend seems to be simple. Very light (bland) coffee flavored coffee for more than what their closest competitors are charging is ridiculous. One size may fit all, but the depth of flavor must be there. $8 for a small milk substitute.... ok. You've come to the right place. read more

I just came in for a simple cup of black coffee and it turned into an issue. I waited and waited and then waited some more, ate my cookie, waited again, and finally told the kid working, "I just wanted a cup of coffee man. What is going on?" After staring at each other and tugging on their body piercings, they made me an Americano that tasted like garbage. I just wanted a simple cup of coffee ‍ read more

Bustling coffee shop in Tempe. They have a full coffee menu, some baked goods and breakfast burrito options. I got an iced vanilla latte and a strawberry pastry. The drink was solid. The pastry was very average. Long line but the service was quick without cutting corners. I got mine to go, but there are a lot of seating options if you're looking to chill. A bit expensive- $13 for a latte and small pastry before tip. read more

Best coffee shop coffee in the US, and I've been to some of the best. Pour over was strong enough for me! Plus my husband roasts our coffee weekly and this was amazingly fresh roasted. Well done excellent service from friendly baristas. read more

Awesome coffee and a cool atmosphere! A bit spendy for a small coffee but so good I would go back. I had their dirty chai and it was amazing plus it was raining outside so it helped warm me up! read more

Person at the front register he was very helpful and gave me information. I purchased a bag of their coffee beans. I would describe the coffee as having a sweet flavor versus strong bitter espresso flavor. A little different than what I am used to for espresso. The Batista seemed very busy and I wanted to remake my drink but felt bad since she was the only one. Not too many people inside. Also, not much choice for pastries, cookies, breads etc. read more

I've been going to Cartel Coffee Lab stores since around 2014 and they've always served exquisite specialty coffee that is out of this world! The ambiance of the stores has always exuded cool, industrial, urban charm and coolness. I love being there. For about a year, I visited almost every workday and used it as a remote office while I worked on web design. It was great for that - the atmosphere and even the background hum of espresso shots being pulled and pour-over cups being, well poured combined with the din of patrons chatting happily and baristas cheerfully geeking out with customers when asked about sourcing, roasting, grinding, and brewing for the best taste is so nice to work to. read more

The best coffee hands down. This is one of my favorite places. It's like getting a handcrafted brew. They have several locations in town and I only wish they had a few more. It seems some places have lost the art of creating a coffee with a personal touch and this place certainly has the touch. If you're going to spend as much as coffee cost these days you might as well go to a place that puts a little love and tender care into your cup. Give it a try you won't be disappointed. read more

This is a coffee review so let me say this... The people are amazing!! Super nice and friendly. The place had lots of tables and work space....I appreciated that a lot!! However I don't go to a coffee house just for the workspace and people....I go for the coffee. I ordered a black coffee of which, if the coffee is so-so, I would add cream and sugar. This coffee was so bad the cream and sugar didn't help!! It was the worst coffee I ever tasted. It was bitter and acidic. A cup of Folgers would have been better and anyone who knows me knows how much I hate Folgers!! This is just my opinion.....what I love about coffee drinkers is that we run the gamut!! So I encourage you to try them for yourselves...and then share with me your thoughts. read more

I think the interior is really cute and enjoyed doing some work here but I have to say the matcha I had was probably a 5/10. The bread was nice but I wish it was toasted it. FYI they only have 12 oz cups! The parking is limited and very small, was worried my car would get dinged. But the free wifi and space was a great atmosphere to get some work done:) P.S. the bathrooms are DISGUSTING. I literally couldn't use them. I've been to bars & gas stations with cleaner ones. read more

Slowest coffee shop and not even the best and not friendliest. I was literally the third person in line and had to wait for 20 minutes for a simple latte. Waited patiently and finally decided to check...wasn't made!? For $7 not worth it. Press coffee is way better and friendlier. Never coming back. read more

This is my favorite coffee shop to visit when I'm in Tempe. They always have friendly staff, there is ample seating, and the drinks and pastries are delicious. On my most recent stay in town, I visited two days in a row. Although there were other coffee spots closer to my hotel, I much preferred to walk a little further to Cartel. I don't get anything complicated, usually just a latte or cappuccino, but they're always great with none of that burnt taste that's easy to find at some coffee chains. This place can get busy, but I don't mind waiting a bit for a quality product. read more

My husband is working in the area. He really digs Cartel coffee. They are even open in the morning early enough for him to grab a bite to eat as well. We meet here during his crazy schedules sometimes the girls and I can have a quick mini date with him so he can feel the love during all his hard work. Cartel makes him happy. The girls love to get the organic vegan hot chocolate! Can it get any better than that? I like their Sparkling Prickly Pear or herbal tea. read more

Cartel always has only the best to offer not only in coffee but espresso drinks and yummy treats. They don't have any sit down options right now during covid but have created an amazing walk up ordering and waiting area. The service is always excellent and I never feel like I have to wait long for my beverages. One of my favorites is their chai (great flavor balance of spice and sweet) but their regular lattes are also delicious. Even the plain black coffee is to die for. So many options and they definitely offer only the best. Always a perfect way to end a morning bike ride. read more

Always been a fan of this place since I started at ASU and I will continue to be a supporter. The beans are fantastic for at-home coffee brewers and the experimental menu keeps me coming back to try more! I tried the tonic today, which if you're a fan of citrus/floral forward coffee drinks, this is the perfect drink for you. It really reminds me of Morgan Eckroth's (@morgandrinkscoffee) barista championship recipe, so if that's something you've been dying to get a taste of the tonic is a good starter. read more

My favorite coffee shop in Tempe, Cartel has never disappointed me in terms of their coffee, snacks or ambiance. I think I might've lived here more than my own apartment over the past month, especially when I was studying for big exams, but the workers never made me feel like a bum! I've never had a hard time finding seating, and it's always got good vibes going around. Oh! And they're dog friendly, which is awesome -I haven't brought my pup here yet, but it's nice to know we have a spot to go when it's too hot to sit outside :) read more

I spent a lot of time here during my most recent trip to the Phoenix/Tempe area. The main highlight is the vibe. There is no shortage of seating and a few different rooms/sections to choose. It did not feel crammed at all, and the staff was very welcoming. Now for the coffee: I would quite honestly say it's my favorite coffee in the area. I tried a variety of drinks, but my favorite was the pour-over from Colombia. You have to wait a few minutes, but it's completely worth it. They also offer an americano, although it didn't appear on the menu. The espresso was a little darker than I normally prefer for an americano, but it works well in a latte. I also think they should offer a more geographically diverse set of pour over options. I'm a big fan of African beans, but they didn't have any on the menu. Nonetheless, I would come here everyday if I lived in the area. It's a great place to study and it's open really late, perfect for late-night coffee drinkers like myself! read more

First and last time coming to this place. I'm all for people bringing their pets into eating establishments..patio areas ONLY. The last thing I want is Fido's hair in my whipped cream topped pancake! So this morning we order our coffees and go to the side area to wait for them and see this chick with not one, but two shaggy dogs standing by the ice water area- she's pouring water into the drinking glasses and letting the dogs drink out of the glasses!!!!!!! The employees come over, pet the dogs, and just let the dog hair fly!!!!! I saw only one employee wash her hands. The other one had dishes in her hand, totally put her hands all over the dogs, then rinsed off the dish- no soap. Just some water. Heck no! This is unsanitary and a sickness waiting to happen. How about some hoof and mouth anybody?? This sounds like a job for the Health Inspector!!! read more

I always feel like the oldest hipster when I'm there but it is a very nice place close to ASU. I usually just get a cold brew with lots of room for cream and sugar. Coffee purists probably think that's terrible, but I like my drinks sweet. Came here with a friend who is in college and she thought it was pretty nice. There's plenty of room to sit and do homework if that's why you're there, or just hang out on one of the benches and chat. The caffeine content in that cold brew however must've been pretty high because boy did I feel it afterwards! I have been thinking of getting another one because it was so delicious and I'm glad I didn't. I would have been up all night. Either way the coffee is wonderful, I highly recommend. read more

When I'm in town visiting I always make it a point to stop and try something new from there menu. I have been to a lot of coffee joints but this place tops them all as far as variety and flavor. If you want real coffee this is the place to go. You can actually taste the coffee not like other places that add all kinds of flavoring to make there coffee taste sugary and good but loose the actual coffee bean flavor. This place is kinda hidden of the Main Street. There is a lot of parking. Besides the Coffee you need to pick up a T-shirt or Coffee cup. I have had so many compliments back home in Chicago. Everyone wants one. read more

One of the best coffee places in the valley, hands down! Their coffee roasting is perfect, their branches are each consistent with their espresso and pour-over drinks. For coffee snobs, this place will be a jewel to admire, and for those who are coffee snobs that need to study, this is a great place! There are many tables and outlets, and this location is extremely spacious. It can get a little bit loud, so I would recommend that you have headphones. However, as the time passes, it begins to slow down and becomes much more of a study-friendly environment. The drinks here are mostly all standard sizes with two-shots of espresso, but you can get additional shots if you choose to. Another bonus of Cartel is that they do not charge for alternative milk, which is very unique as most coffee shops tack on a $0.25-$1.00 surcharge. Give this place a try! read more

If nothing else, Cartel serves as a good example of what to expect once you graduate from sugary, drive-through coffee chains. It's got: -Nice hours, in case you wanted to work a bit into the evening -Plenty of seating, so even when it's mostly full you feel as though SOMETHING is out there. There's some spaces where you can stand and work/enjoy your coffee as well. -Coffee roasted on site, prepared in several different fashions. Not just espresso and drip, but cold brew and pour over as well -Relevant equipment if you decide you want to DIY I'm sure it could use a bit of sprucing up in the decor department--it's unorthodox at this point of market saturation for an establishment like this to feel more like an unfinished wood shop classroom than a popular college hangout. Nevertheless, I don't see how anyone (who is not looking for a frap) could leave Cartel dissatisfied. It is worth a visit. read more

Cartel serves a very lovely cup of coffee. I stopped in during a much needed break on a work trip. There's only so much robot made coffee one can consume before slipping into madness. They were roasted beans on site while my pour over was being crafted. This is awesome to see no matter how many times you stop into a coffee roaster. The whole place has a very "North Carolina" vibe to it for lack of a better description. There are very similar roaster/coffee shops in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area and Asheville. Going out of your way for shops like this are an experience worth having. I won't comment too much on my particular coffee since it will cycle as beans come in and out of season, but my drink was as I'd expect for the price and the quality was obvious. I tried the cold brew my friend ordered and it wasn't my favorite, but not withstanding my flavor preferences it had the clean flavor and clear color of a quality product. read more

Okay....I am self proclaimed coffee snob and for good reason. I drink a lot of coffee, make my own, and have to go find corporate coffee all the same...burnt tasting and dull. Not here. Good vibes that speak to "we just do coffee and we take it very serious". I drink coffee black as great beans should be and this was really good. Bright, fresh, and flavourful. Rudest barista ever. She treated my brother and I like we were idiots and inconveniencing her when we asked what beans were available for pour overs. She was full of excuses and tried to get us to order drip which neither of us wanted. So rude. I've been here during the summer and thought that maybe it's set at cold temperature because it's hot. However, that's still the case during winter.
