my husband and I had a good experience purchasing a car from CarMax. we did all of our shopping and research on our own online, scheduled a test drive (without express pickup), loved the car, filled out the application with the sales associate after the test drive, and scheduled our express pickup for a couple days later (based on scheduling). our express pickup was not quite as express as we'd anticipated. after completing the application with the sales associate, we were told to expect documentation to be sent for signatures via email prior to our express pickup appointment. I anticipated this email to come the evening before our morning appointment. I did receive a phone call the evening prior, asking if I needed help with anything, and I asked about this expected paperwork. turns out they dont sent it until about an hour before your appointment. so an hour and 15min prior to our appointment, I received a text from CarMax stating that they needed my husband to upload his DL (they sent an email link), and then they will send the paperwork for signatures. my husband did so, and we left for our appointment about 30min before our scheduled appt time. we arrived at CarMax ~10min early, and still no paperwork. it wasn't until 15min past our scheduled appt time that we received this paperwork, the internet (even on wi-fi) inside the CarMax is absolute trash so it took forever to load, and at this point I'm feeling pressure to run through everything and just sign everything without reading a damn thing. I hope that our express pickup experience is abnormal, and here's to hoping our express drop-off this coming weekend is a smoother process. overall, I would recommend CarMax for purchasing a vehicle. so far, we are very happy with our used car, and we would definitely use CarMax in the future! read more

Absolutely such a smooth buying process with our advisor Illana. My sister saw a Lexus for sale last week and came to check it out at the Fremont location. We test drove it, and everything checked out for us. Illana went through the service records with us and was told that if the car had records, it meant that it was being serviced at the dealership. The car was originally leased and for the year/condition of the car it was exceptional. Illana took the time to answer any of our questions and went through all the CarMax reports with us and any replacements/fixes they had done to the car when it arrived. A week later we came back to the SJ location to have it delivered near us. Illana was actually from the SJ location working at Fremont when we had seen her. She helped us once again and even went further explaining that we can go through a credit union for lower interest instead of sticking with CarMax. Illana gave great tips. I would recommend asking for Illana as she is very knowledgable, knows what she is talking about and provides exceptional service. She was training a new hire when we bought the vehicle as well. ‼ BEWARE - CARMAX SCAM ALERT Date: Aug 13, 2025 Location: CarMax center - Sales rep: Miguel Del Rio Vehicle: Hyundai Elantra 2015 I went to CarMax to sell my car. They took my keys "for inspection" and started the standard OBD reading. Then, the inspector opened the hood and added some unknown oil/substance into the engine bay -- without my consent. A short while later, my car started producing heavy smoke. The inspector then conveniently came back and told me there was "a problem" and that I should expect a much lower offer. For reference: In June 2025, CarMax had inspected the same car and offered $7,000. Between June and August, the car was driven less than 50 miles and kept in covered parking. This time, after their mysterious "oil top-up" and the smoke, they dropped the offer to $3,000 -- claiming the smoke reduced its value. The next day, I took the same car to Carvana. Guess what? Carvana offered me $7,200 -- no smoke, no fake drama, no shady tactics. Bottom line: This is either gross negligence or deliberate sabotage to lowball customers. I never expected such shady behavior from a supposedly reputable company like CarMax. My advice: If you value your car and your sanity, record the inspection process, and think twice before trusting CarMax with your vehicle. read more

I did just that and I sent it to his manager, Marquis Young. Marquis assured me that I would be reimbursed. I wanted to sell my 2022 truck so I looked up CarMax on the ol interweb. Their website is very easy to navigate, you just need to enter in some information about your vehicle and they will give you a quote right then and there and it's good for about a week. After checking a few competitors I found that CarMax offered the highest price for my truck. I called the 800 number and made an appointment at CarMax on Capital Expy. When I arrived for my appointment I noticed that the lot was jammed packed with cars for sale but looked well organized. Walking in I noted that the people were very friendly and were available to answer all my questions. I told them that I had an appointment and they started the process of checking out my vehicle right away. After they checked out my vehicle they offered me exactly what I was quoted over the internet. "Note what they offer you is not negotiable, it's take it or leave it. I did look up trucks similar to mine on their website and found that they were selling for about $4k more then they offered so I felt it was a fair price that they offered" The whole process takes about 3 hours start to finish. They handed me a check that can only be deposited into my bank account "in case you loose it or..." And at the end of the process they even paid for an Uber driver to pick me up and take me home. Bottom line I highly recommend them and I will definitely be using them to buy myself a used car in the near future. Not sure how this place qualifies as a "dealership." Vehicles seem to arrive exactly as they are and get sold exactly as they were no exaggeration. The car we test-drove had stale fries, crumbs, sticky cup holders, coffee stains, and greasy smudges throughout the interior. They ran it through a quick rinse before we drove it, but calling that "detailing" is laughable. Mark, who was assigned to our appointment, showed minimal interest in actually helping us buy a car. He repeatedly disappeared, and after the test drive, he was simply gone... nowhere to be found. Not exactly confidence-inspiring when you're considering a major purchase. CarMax boasts that their vehicles meet "high-quality" standards per Kelley Blue Book or whatever they use and so you can't haggle. But when you point out flaws or cleanliness issues, there's zero negotiation the only response is "we can clean it or fix it." The main dash display was glitching and Apple CarPlay wasn't functioning correctly, and the car had a noticeable pull to the right, yet somehow the alignment was marked as "good." It makes you question how thorough their inspection actually is. Meanwhile, they admit they only have two technicians for the entire site. So much for quality assurance. The staff overall didn't help the impression many looked barely older than high schoolers, poorly groomed, and dressed like they just woke up. It felt like dealing with retail teenagers, not professionals selling $20k-$40k vehicles. We also asked to test-drive another model for comparison and were told there were none in stock. We literally walked the lot and found TWO of them. When we returned to ask, they insisted we'd need a separate appointment since it wasn't the "same vehicle." The logic was baffling. The only highlight was AJ and Daja, professional, helpful, patient, and actually knowledgeable. He got us a second test drive and walked us through financing scenarios, even though we ultimately walked away. SCAM Business I paid $800 on December 27th to have a car shipped from Texas to San Jose, CA. The car arrived on January 4th, but as of today, January 12th, I still haven't been able to see it. They repeatedly claimed I would receive a call, but that never happened--no calls, no follow-ups, absolutely nothing. Their customer service is shockingly poor. Today is the final day of their quoted delivery timeline. When I called again to check on the status, I was told they had no one available to smog the car and that it would take another week or more. If I were the manager of this location, I would personally take the car to get it smogged and ready for delivery. I decided to cancel and request a refund. However, when I called to cancel, the representative put me on hold for 20 minutes, forcing me to hang up. They didn't call back to apologize, address the issue, or offer any compensation for the inconvenience. They simply took my money and ghosted. This entire experience has been a complete waste of time. CarMax cars are already priced well above market value, but I was willing to consider buying from them for the supposed convenience. Sold my car to CarMax. It was relatively seamless except a few things: I received my quote online (highly recommend doing so before coming in). When I checked in to let them know I had an appt and had a quote, I was told by the gentleman at the front to take a seat and wait until someone called my name. Waited 30 minutes passed appt time, to be told from a different employee that I did not need to wait since my I was already quoted online. And person who directed me to waiting area was new and didn't know any better.... I should've gone straight to the business window and checked in there instead. Once you check in @ business, it took maybe 10-15 minutes for someone to take a look at my car and present me with an offer. Offer matched my online quote. If you're willing to take it, you need to go back to the business window to finalize the deal (which would take another 40-45min). By the time I got to the business window, the supervisor said they were no longer buying cars that night because they were 1.5 hrs away from closing and were still in the process of completing paperwork for 6 people ahead of me. I wish I hadn't wasted my time that day cause that meant I needed to drive all the way back to CarMax. Thankfully the offer is good for up to a week. Would recommend CarMax to sell your but, but would caution others not to sell late in the day. read more

Bought my 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon through CarMax and also used CarMax Auto Finance. They make it nearly impossible to make a payment. After changing my phone number with them, they send sign in verification to my old number EVERY SINGLE TIME!!! Or they lock you out of your account constantly so you cannot make a payment. So if I want to make a payment I have to pay MoneyGram a very large fee to do so. I think they do this type of stuff on purpose to make it hard for you, then they can repossess the vehicle and try to make you pay still after they sell it dirt cheap at auction. Won't happen with me though I will file for bankruptcy on it without hesitation. The vehicle will sometimes run in warm weather but after a few minutes every single warning light goes off while driving it. It says the stabilizing system failed, the shifter also constantly locks up and a warning light comes on also stating that the sway bar is all bad, if I turn it off while these lights are on it will not start back up at all even in warm weather, then I have to get a ride home or to finish doing what I have to do then to go home. It sits more than it gets to drive. Auto start NEVER works at all. Overall the vehicle is just a piece of junk. Part of me would rather just let it go and file bankruptcy on it. It would make my life a lot less stressful. I already always have to pay another ride to take me to and from everywhere I have to go. I am really thinking about letting it go now, filing bankruptcy on it and giving the burden to anyone else but myself. It's one of the most stressful ordeals I've dealt with. Just tired and fed up with it. I should have went with Ally Auto for financing so I could at least make my payments with ease. When I went with Ally in the past I was able to make my payments without all of the headache. I never quit paying my loan when I went through Ally either. The absolute worst experience in a long time for trying to buy a vehicle. This location refuses to comply with state law that exempts non resident military from the vehicle license fee. Even when I had the paperwork filled out Alejandro Sandoval refused to even look at it. There wasn't even an attempt to listen to me. But the major issue was that I had been working with them for weeks on a vehicle and they provided me a payoff price to buy the vehicle outright. When I arrived with the check Alejandro Sandoval tried to squeeze out a hidden 500 plus dollar fee. I had spoken to them that day and at no point even though they had a copy of the check did they address any difference. Instead it cost me 110 dollars in transportation to and from San Jose to and from Monterey. When I arrive they "could not find the vehicle" because "someone was driving it" and instead tried to pull a bait and switch and show me other vehicles. I point out the type was different on one and the other the vin did not match and that just because it was the same type was not the vehicle I came to buy. Finally after the run around they "found" the vehicle. But after the drive and inspection is when Alejandro Sandoval stared with the "you need to pay the difference" that came out of nowhere. I pointed out and showed the paperwork they had sent with the payoff amount and that I had a check for the total and would pay what they told me the price was. Alejandro Sandoval responded with "no haggling". I agree I came in there with a check for the amount we agreed on. You started with the price changing- you haggled. Then he walked away and it took me having to go through the store to just get his name. It was like buying a car from Danny DeVito in Matilda. If your military stay away from this location. No way I was buying that car. 2nd and worst experience at Capitol Carmax. I found a vehicle I liked and I took it for a test drive. It was dark and I didn't notice the significant damage to both front and back bumpers until I returned and saw it during the day. Sales they told me that it would take over 3 weeks for them to look at and fix the car. They said they would replace the front bumper, but would most likely just buff the back bumper. I then discovered other issues with the car like the speakers not working. I wanted to test drive it for 24 hours, to see if any check lights come on. I secured an appointment through sales to pick up the car on Friday. I also uploaded all my documents on Wednesday prior to my appointment to save time. Unfortunately, when I arrived at my appointment time 5:00pm, a young guy at the counter checked me in as a walk-in even though I told him I had an appointment set by his employee the other day. The guy said he saw my appointment, but it was for the next day. Their first mistake. I told him well that is wrong and my appointment was exactly at 5:00 PM. The guy then asked for my name and I spelled out my first name slowly to him. The guy managed to spell my name completely wrong. That should've been the 2nd red flag of the evening. My friend was standing right next to me and she asked if I was sure I wanted to stay. I was told that I would be seen between 30-40 minutes max. I told the guy that I had completed everything online so that I could just pick up the car. He told me that none of the sales guys were available. He told me I was fifth on the list. I decided to stay, and my friend left. I continued to check in with different employees since no one was managing the front counter. I soon found out that out of five employees, three of them were already off. It had been an hour. They told me I was second on the list. Some employees left. It was 6:30pm when I was finally next to be seen. More people started to show up and this young guy was checking them in. He looked like he was in training. He definitely did not look like sales, because then he would be helping with sales and not just checking in people. At 6:50pm I decided to approach the same guy hiding behind a desk in the very back. I told him my situation and asked when I would be seen. The guy then asked for my name. I told him my name and that they misspelled my name and wouldn't correct it (even though I told multiple employees). I told him I had an appointment at 5:00 PM. He told me I was not in the system at all! But I could see it from the check in computer. I proceeded to tell him my whole experience there that night and asked to see his manager. I told him that this is unacceptable and unprofessional. I told him I know it's not your fault, it's management, so can I speak to your manager. This guy who looked as young as 20 years old, looked back at me and told me "I am the manager". I couldn't believe it! This guy was the manager and wasn't helping his salesforce. I said since you're the manager then can you help me? I was told by sales all I needed was to sign a form before they bring the car around and give me the keys, since all my information was uploaded on Wednesday. What happened next was very unexpected. The guy who claimed to be the Manager named ZACH, responded "No, I cannot help you because that would be unfair for all the other people waiting who have appointments." I was completely shocked with his response. I had just told him I was there waiting for two hours to be seen by anyone. Appointment or no appointment should not matter at that point. I was next on their list! I told him that I don't even have a ride home. He told me, "no problem. I'll get you a lift." He had nothing else to say to me. I never expected to be given the go around, especially from a Manager! Was this guy even trained?! Working employees overtime (not getting paid very much at all), horrible customer service, I could see this CARMAX as a ship going down. I was looking at a car that would cost me $30,000 by time I walked out of there. That seems like it a lot of money to me to be wasting on bad service and a potential lemon. If CARMAX doesn't care about making a $30,000 sale, I don't think they care about anything at all, not even losing out on the money from one customer. Good Customer service is feeling valued and respected. I would think that management and sales would know that's how you make good deals and profit, by building rapport with your customers, not by degrading them in a public space. read more

They did not appear so busy but my wait time to get paperwork processed and someone to have me sign, was excruciating long. I asked to speak to the manager at the end and they wouldn't even give me his full name ( Josh). Supposedly he was in a "meeting ". We came about 1/2 hour before the appointment time and the receptionist took us to the counter where we gave them our keys and they had a tech go and inspect the car. They came back within 20 minutes and gave us an official appraisal letter and we agreed to the price. It was the same as what was online. We then turned in our title and waited for the next available rep. She came out called our name and we proceed with the transferring of title and signing of the forms then they cut the check and we left. The whole process was less than 50 minutes. Seamless process and all representatives were very helpful. I would sell my car here again. The lobby was quite large, clean and spacious. Thought that selling a car would be easy. I echo other reviewers who noted that despite making an appointment and getting a quote online, the end to end process is very lengthy and communication from the staff is very poor. Spent five hours with my 80 year old dad waiting for them to "process the paperwork." Would have been okay if expectations were managed better and there was appropriate staff for the number of appointments scheduled. Overall, very bad experience. Do not recommend. read more

Salea manager Alejandro Sandoval had a difficult time having a challenging conversation. We were discussing an exchange of a car I purchased from Carmax Capitol Expressway. Alejandro became angry and made a scene in the middle of the sales floor. Alejandro then "removed" himself from the conversation and refused to finsih the exchange he promised, in writing. It seemed that Alejandro was angry because he made a promise to exchange the car... again, in writing. From my experience, this companys San Jose Capitol Expressway location, makes documented promises that they refuse to keep. read more

Just sold my car here, and the experience was better than expected. First, after looking at some competitors, the quote was highest here. Although I was not expecting to get the full quote (almost 1.5 times as high as the Kelly Blue Book value), I did! This was such a delightful surprise, and I'm still smiling about it! Logistically, the process was streamlined throughout. I was even able to get an appointment the same day and didn't have to wait too long for my car to be inspected. If you are selling a car and end up taking the offer, keep in mind processing the transaction and completing paperwork takes about 90 minutes. Thankfully, Car Max is close to shopping centers off Almaden Expressway with some good stores to help kill time (e.g. Costco, Whole Foods, Peet's, Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A).
