My boyfriend and I are looking to buy a car and we bought one from Carmax in orange about 5 years ago which went well, today I went to carmax to look at cars and maybe take a test drive. I walked around that place for over 20 min's people saw me and I guess that they decided that I was not worth helping. No one asked me if I needed help or that someone would be with me. I purchased a car here and had a great experience minus one flaw. The salesman was running in and out on personal phone calls which caused me to spend an additional hour sitting in the showroom. The experience however was a highly recommended one, I picked a car online, it was transferred to the location nearest me and I got a call it was ready, went in drove it and signed the papers, I also sold my car, which took an additional 5 minutes at most. read more

So, we have decided to drive to CARMAX Burbank CA to get my sisters car's appraised and maybe sell it as well. the branch is under construction so the place is pretty chaotic and you actually need to go and find a sale person to help you. the guy that was helping us was an older guy he was nice to us but unfortunately not that knowledgeable, so we weren't informed enough on the whole process. that he got all of information and told us its going to be about 45 minutes wait to get the car appraised. which in that time we weren't near the car(we gave the car keys at the same time we signed in) in the mean time you can go around the lot and see if you like anything my wife was with me (we came in 2 different cars, just in case) anyway wondering around one care caught our attention but there was no one around. going back to the office to find our friendly salesperson , waiting for a bit and then he showed up and got my driving license and we took a test drive in the mean time the car is getting appraised. coming back from the test drive sitting down to hear the "Good news" and "fair price" which wasn't the case. we got better appraisal from an actual dealership without committing to buy another one! sorry for the long intro but shortly after my wife got into the car and we headed back she found out the passenger side mirror is missing (the actual mirror) she was freaking out, so we stopped on the side of the road and yes it seams that the mirror is missing! so we called the Sales person again and said that I'll head back to the CarMax branch and the manager will be helping me. so once I got there again needed to wait till the sale person arrived then came one of two managers, then disappeared for a while then came a third manager that explained to me (very slowly) so I would understand it which was upsetting. the guy "Sales manager" didn't took responsibility at all and basically used every theoretic excuse why it happened and why it's not there fault although we took pics of the car prior to bringing it to the branch and it clearly shows it had the mirror there. anyway I've asked the manager to call the appraisal guy, which also indicated he didn't do anything or even test drive the car. they can't proof that they drive the car or treat it rough or any one else there of course. the fact is that we had the mirror there for the last few years its really interesting it decided to flyaway all of a sudden at the same day we gave our car keys to strangers and trusted them with our car. all I've asked in all this long day is to get It fixed and back to it's original condition. another note once I've mention that I might pursue a legal avenue they both stopped talking and told me that they can't talk any further with me and I should contact the customer service department over the phone. people that how this big company handling their customers and I guess future disappointed ones. This was my first time purchasing a car in ten years so I was a little nervous going in to it. I originally went to a couple Kia dealerships and after I was in the lot for close to 45 minutes with about ten men in suits just looking at me and not approaching to help, I decided to take my business elsewhere. I remembered someone telling me to check out Carmax because they were super helpful and friendly to her. Well I had the same experience. I'm giving 5 stars because of AJ who was patient, not pushy, and very helpful as he answered the hundred questions I had. He dealt with me over a couple weeks, even transferring a car from San Diego for me to check out, though I didn't end up getting that one. He was able to find the same kind of car (a white Kia Optima SX) but with fewer miles for me, and I LOVE it. Even after my car purchase, he is still there to answer my texts about things I'm not sure about (such as how to connect Bluetooth ) All in all, I had a great experience, didn't feel pressured, and absolutely love my car, with no regrets read more

Initially, online I made a requested to have a car transferred from Ontario, CA to Canoga Park, CA for a test drive. I made 2 appointments this week to, 'start the process' to have a car transferred from Ontario, CA to Canoga Park, CA. The first salesman, James and I agreed he would call that afternoon at 4 PM. I texted him when I was available (at 4 PM) to let him know I was available. He did not call. Later that afternoon, I received a text the hold placed on the car for the transfer had been canceled. I called CarMax Canoga Park this morning (Wednesday 10/27.20) informing them what happened. I was transferred to South Carolina to, "start the paperwork" to have the feeless car transfer to Canoga Park from Ontario, CA. I told them I already have financing. I have my certificate. He stated the, 'paperwork process would take about 10 to 20 minutes'. I work in the medical field and had to return to work. However, we agreed to an appointment this afternoon at 4 PM PST. The gentleman in South Carolina, CJ Needam, agreed to call at 4 PM PST. I verified the appointment via text and he confirmed. The young man in South Carolina, CJ Needam, never called. They wasted my time and lost my business. I am certain I will have no problem purchasing a vehicle by this weekend. read more

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. These guys will rip you off, guaranteed. This location offered me $3,000 grand less for my car than a dealership. That's right, a dealership! You know, the guys who are supposed to screw you out of money on your car? Yeah, those guys. CarMax also claimed that my car had frame damage, when I know for a fact it has none. They said that was the reason for my low estimate. I have had the car appraised numerous times, never once has anyone found any frame damage. They will lie to your face in order to convince you that their lowball offers are fair. The sales staff even had the guts to say "We still have a good offer on the table", after I showed him the competing offer from the dealer that beat theirs by $3,000. On top of that, I had to wait over 2 hours for my estimate. When I asked to speak to an appraiser about what they found, I was told that I could wait, but it would be a while. I know many people seem to love these guys, but I will never set foot into another CarMax again. read more

I didn't end up buying a car from CarMax, as they didn't have the model I wanted, but it was because of Bob that I found the Honda Pilot brand. I had never considered that car before. This review relates solely to trying to sell a car, and I say try because I was never able to get that far. Instead CarMax committed one of the worse customer service sins - wasting a customer's time - namely mine. First, their reservation policy - or lack thereof. I made a reservation for 11:30am. CarMax rep called me at 11:15am the day of reservation and told me they get a lot of walk-ins on Sunday and I may have to wait despite the appointment. What's the point of a reservation system if walk-ins take priority over appointments? Understand the need for walk-ins but they should always be lower on the wait list than appointments. Service rep said sorry, they prioritize walk-ins and appointments basically equally. Despite the nonsensical nature of this policy, I asked how long the wait would be because I couldn't afford to spend more than 45-60min there. Rep told me wait shouldn't be more than 20 min, in and out in an hour easy. I arrive, and am told that actually the wait will be closer to 90 minutes - sorry. At this point, I'm ticked but just spent 20 min driving there so trying to find a way to make the 90 min useful. I ask if I can walk a block down the street to get lunch and do some work and they can give me a call (they already have my cell) when my car's appraisal has started. The response - sorry, no you must wait here the entire time (i.e., you must waste your time here, even though it's Carmax that's behind and that misinformed me of the true wait time). The only reason this isn't one star is because the rep I dealt with at the actual CarMax location (different than the guy who told me the wrong wait time) was actually quite nice. But I felt bad for him because he couldn't do anything about the idiotic policies outlined above, so he was just left saying "sorry" most of the time. So in short, fix your appointment policy or just don't bother to have appointments (even the DMV has a better system, and that's a low bar), and if you aren't going to honor appointments, at least allow people to go do something useful at that time. read more

If you enjoy gambling in Las Vegas buying a car from CarMax has about the same odds. My daughter just bought a 2010 Corolla for $13,000 from CarMax and two days later took it to her mechanic. After close inspection he found about $1000 damage to the undercarriage. She is in the process of dealing with them. I purchased my Jeep from Carmax three months ago and was absolutely giddy about it. The sales representative I spoke to was Jim and he made the experience as easy as possible. I walked in at 12, spoke with him, test drove the vehicle and drove off the lot a brand new Jeep owner around 3:30. Everything went perfectly. Flash forward three months later to the first major rain we had since I bought by Jeep. My Jeep leaks everywhere and causes electrical problems. I needed it to be inspected as quickly as possible so I took my Jeep to the Jeep dealership. They were very efficient in figuring out what was wrong with my vehicle and inquired about ordering parts, since I bought the extended warranty with Carmax I told them to go ahead and start the repairs. I then get notified that my warranty(that I'm paying $2,000 for) doesn't cover my issue. You can imagine my frustration at this point. After calling the Warranty office and the Carmax office looking for questions I am constantly being put on hold. I leave a couple messages and get no response. Finally I ask to speak to a supervisor who tells me he will call me tomorrow with detailed information regarding my situation. The next day comes and after waiting around till 4PM for a phone call I decide to just head to Carmax. Soon after arriving and asking for the supervisor I spoke to I learn that he was on the floor the entire time, but somehow never had a moment to call me back? After approaching him and introducing myself you can only imagine the look on his face as he struggled to make excuses for why he could not call me back earlier in the day. After talking with many employees and showing them a detailed invoice from the Jeep dealership regarding my repairs they finally decide to take my car in to do their own inspection on it. I finally feel like I'm getting somewhere now. Five days go by and I have heard no response from anyone at Carmax. The Jeep dealership had my car overnight and managed to find every issue wrong with it along with all the repair solutions, yet somehow Carmax techs can not figure out anything about my Jeep despite having it for 5 days? This is absurd! I called in multiple times only to be put on hold for 20+ minutes and then hung up on or to reach a voicemail that has a full inbox so I can't even leave a message. This has gotten way out of hand. I am currently typing this review while on hold right now. I still have not been able to speak to someone and have gone the better part of a week without my vehicle that I've only owned for three months. The Carmax customer service department is a joke! Their 125 point inspection is a bunch of nonsense. Had they actually done the inspection on my vehicle they would have noticed all the issues that the Jeep dealership was able to find in a matter of hours. Don't trust their inspection. Things will be missed and when problems do occur they will try to charge you things that should have been fixed prior to selling the vehicle. This place is a joke! read more

Shout out to Ian (sales manager) who helped me so much with my car even though I didn't buy it from his location. For being such a busy branch, they are really nice to people! My story: I was car shopping and decided to look at this non-transferable car at the Irvine location. I decided on another car that was transferable from Fresno and decided to transfer it to Irvine branch so the sales lady who had been helping me from the beginning could get the commission. After 2 days, the engine light came on and I also realized that the subwoofer was taken out (it was suppose to be part of my car's Beats audio package as advertised). Irvine location said I could take it to the closest Carmax for any problems so I took it to the Burbank branch. Ian took on my case and readily wanted to solve any problems I had with the car. We found out that reimbursement for the subwoofer would need to come from the Irvine location since I bought the car there. Since Burbank location was so quick to help, we just assume it would be the same for Irvine one... Well, I texted my Irvine sales lady and she said she would ask the manager but that she thinks nothing will come out of it. I followed up with her a few days later and she said the manager said no (but by the way she was talking in the text messages I am not sure if she even asked the manager at all. Maybe she just assumed it was a no and told me that). Ian said he knows the Irvine manager there and will make calls for me. Ian got the approval from Irvine right away, no problem. Although the Irvine location was slow to call me to finish the process, Ian kept following up with them and me as well to make sure everything was coming along. A month later, I finally drove down to Irvine to get reimbursed for that $300 subwoofer because the Irvine location doesn't have direct pay accounts with the LA area dealerships unlike the Burbank one (which makes sense but makes it a long drive for me coming from downtown LA). Appraisals expired after 7 days, so after going in to get a second appraisal, the guy named Art expressed how "stupid" it was, and pressured us to sell him the car for cash right there. He spent the entire time belittling us, calling us names in front of other customers, and told us we were wasting his time. Art, you sir are a jerk. If you didnt want a job appraising cars which your company offers as a free service, then you shouldn't be working there, and you DEFINITELY shouldn't be belittling, insulting, and pressuring people who take up CarMax on their free appraisal service. read more

The day after I posted the previous review, I received a call from Fernando so I took my car in that day. Found some odor issues with the initial loaner, so I went back the next day. He managed to get me a different loaner. When I got my car back a week later, the lumbar support was fixed, as promised, and Fernando formally apologized. I am pleasantly surprised. As the response from Jennifer suggests, all issues have been addressed, and Fernando did indeed offer a full detailing of my car. The one large chip that I kept having to look at everytime I opened or closed the driver door was filled in, minor scratches were less obvious, the interior and under hood looks like brand new. Although I did not speak to the service manager, and still have no idea who that is - I truly appreciate the effort the team at CarMax Burbank put in to address those issues previously mentioned. read more

I want to preface this review with stating that I actually did purchase and sell a car here. With that said, the selling experience is painless, that is why it got 2 stars instead of one. On the otherhand, the buying experience is horrible. It started with the feeling of sharks swimming around you as you are walking the lot, then it continues the moment you say you're interested. There is a feeling of pressure, the entire time. I was lucky enough to know what I was looking for and could not be swaded, but I felt as though the people kept trying to get me to buy something else. The pressure continued to mount once my credit was pulled and they verified that I was qualified buyer. Once they established I was qualified it didn't get much better because the only financing option they offered was their own, which made no sense with a credit score in the mid 7's. Fast Forward a year after buying the car and I come to find out that carmax never re-registered the car so I continue to get registration bills for a car that I no longer own. I would recommend to anyone for a quick sell, go see carmax, but if you buying. Look elsewhere. read more

I set up an appointment and they didn't honor the appointment time, Angel(the person that supposed to help) told me that they can only help me after 1 hour. They took in people without appointment and they were running late, and I had to wait another hour to start the appraisal procedure. And then I was asked to speak to a manager(Scott) , and he told me that nothing could be done, if I wanted to get an appraisal, my only choice was to wait an hour. Then I asked what was the difference between making an appointment and not making one; he couldn't give me an answer, all he said was "there is nothing he can do" and in the process of asking a question, I was rudely interrupted by Renard(someone that works there) and he said "there is no difference" SO DON'T MAKE AN APPOINTMENT. You know how when you go to buy a car, you always have like 10 friends who are like "You have to go to my guy at so and so. He's the best!"? Ok, I used to get annoyed (mostly because they would be like "Yeah, he's in Santa Clarita, but so worth the drive." Ok, no, it's not.). Well, now we have a car guy at Carmax in Burbank! (JD, you rock!) First of all, they gave us a fantastic amount for our 2002 Ford Ranger. Way over KBB. Armed with our down payment from the Ranger, we did endless hours of research and settled between the idea of leasing a new Toyota Venza or buying a Honda CR-V or Ford Edge. After dealing with the Douchies at Keyes on Van Nuys, we decided to give up on leasing. Our transfers were ordered within a day and we were at Carmax last night at 6 pm trying them. 3 test drives later, we were torn between 2 different cars. And, our sales person gave us an HONEST answer. With his help, we decided on the less expensive, better gas milage CR-V. We told him we were pressed for time (we had a screening for AFI Fest) and he literally had us out of there by 8:30. Test driving, selling our old car AND buying our new car. We made it to our screening on time and absolutely feel like we made the best choice for our family. The girl who did all of our paperwork even wrote a sweet little note on the card to tell us congratulations. It was a big deal for us. I went there just to see how much my car worth. I have brand new RAV4 2015. Used only for two months, but didn't like it because it is not as I expected to be. So, upon my arrival I've met with Shawnette, she was my sales person. She was really coooool!!! Very nice, funny and at the same time very professional. Just because of her I'm giving 4 stars, because the appraisal process wasn't really good. Appraisals said that my car had frame damage, but frame wasn't damage at all. I'm not sure how they decided that it was damaged, and that's why they evaluated my car in $16000. Really??? Brand new car, no frame damage and from $25000 they drop down to $16000??? My 80 year old plus mother bought a Carmax car several months ago. 10 days later the car had issues. She took the car to a Hyundai dealer nearby for repairs. She fully expected Carmax to reimburse her. The car need new hoses and a new switch. Total bill $1,000. After a discussion, Carmax only paid for the switch, $400.00 not the hoses at $600.00. Mom still had finished ready the warranty when these problems occurred, this is true. But Carmax could have done the right thing and be a stand up company and pay the entire bill. I had high hopes for Carmax as I've been told by multiple ppl that they tend to give you dcent prices for your old cars, especially japanese ones. Unfortunately, such was not the case for me. I brought my old corolla (in mint condition) in to get a quote, and walked out with a quote lower than what the dealership gave me! I came here on 12/30, one of the busiest days of the car selling year. The place was packed. Made an appointment with Samson at 6PM, and he was ready for me at exactly 6PM. I came in only to get an estimate on my car as I planned to sell to CarMax then purchase from another dealership. But as we were waiting, I asked Samson questions about the buying process at CarMax, and he walked me through the various options and showed me open inventory. And he totally did it without being a pushy aggressive sales guy. It was a very organic conversation and he didn't pressure me at all. I was in and out of there in less than an hour. I eventually decided to hold on to my car (for personal reasons not having to do with CarMax), but when I'm ready to pull the trigger I'll definitely give Samson a call--for both selling and possibly buying. read more

My first experience was great. My second, I can barely even give 1 star. My daughter went to buy a car, and was given a horribly low estimate of what her car was worth. When I called to get the date of the supposed accident on her report, so that I could correct it with carfax, I was told that her transmission was messed up. She took the car in to the dealership today to get it fixed, they said no issues at all with it. When I called carmax back to find out exactly what the problem was, so that we could correct it, all I got was attitude. Car dealerships are a dime a dozen, and none of us will ever return there. Who helped me was super cool and understanding on why I was trying to get rid of my gas hog (V8) that I was out if there in no time. CarMax is the professional and efficient company it is because of outstanding and excellent employees like Marlon Beglaryan. Marlon accommodated me when I was running late for an appraisal and cut down time tremendously, provided updates on the process status, offered beverages, was never pushy, and when I asked him for directions for a local food spot, he called me moments after because he realized they might be closed and offered some alternatives ha! What a nice guy. Not to mention the fair value appraised and overall Carmax experience, while a bit sterile is a refreshing change of pace, as long as there are employees like Marlon working there that is. Not satisfied with the service and estimate. I went in to get an estimate on my Scion TC. My Scion has 34,000 miles, and the estimate they gave me was for a car with 55,000 miles! I let them know there was an error on their estimate on the number of miles. They made a correction and said it makes no difference on the estimate. I felt they were in such a rush, so I decided not to discuss my estimate any longer. I left CarMax 1 HOUR LATER ( I had an appt. and they said it would only take 30 mins), tried to get in my car then realized they gave me the wrong keys for another vehicle! I went in, and told them "you guys are really in a hurry, you reported the wrong miles on my estimate, and now you give me the wrong keys for another vehicle" and I just left. I was considering trading in my car and purchasing a car through them, but probably not! read more

Horrible horrible headache. Won't take the car back that doesn't work. Bought it two weeks ago!!
