I was very apprehensive to go here because of the bad reviews. I can only speak to my own experience which was thoroughly pleasant. It was a slow day there, but I was in and out in one hour. I would highly recommend going during the week and during the day if you can pull it off. Silva admitted that 2-3 hours is possible on busy days and weekends. I had looked up the value of my car on Kelly blue book and a few others ahead of time so I had a ballpark of what I wanted to sell for. My car was a 2007 Honda odyssey with only 47K miles. Carmax bought it for right around what I was looking for, and I didn't need to let several people kick the tires. Purchased a car, weeks later we're replacingso much in car so soon that was "inspected" Now the engine is broken off the mounts, piston, they fix a light and DAMAGED even more items when asked to fix one issue before hand. We've contacted support , given a run around and they are more focused on the bottom line then you're personal SAFETY, the proper thing to do doesnt even come to mind. I had the car transferred to burbank from out of town and the salesman had everything set up for me on a thurs. I go on Monday to finalize the deal and financing papers and they stick me with a different salesman that all of a sudden says I don't qualify for the financing I could have gotten a few days before but the car had to be transferred in so I had to wait. Then they treat me like they didn't care about my business so I went somewhere else and bought another car the same day that was even better than what Carmax tried to sell me. I brought my car here when the engine light came on and my car started ridding rough. The mechanics called me to tell me my engine was dead and there were other smaller problems with my car. They said they could "look around" for a used engine that would have no warranty and be at least$ 3,000. They convinced me that getting rid of my car would be the best option so "why don't you sell it to us?" They apprised my car for $2,000. I knew that was low and figured they were lying to me so I would sell my car. I went to the mechanic place next to Magnolia Auto Sales in Burbank. They agreed with me that carmax was BS-ing me. They said all I needed were some new spark plugs. I got it fixed there and my car was runs perfect! My car was Kelly Bluebook $6,500. My friend had a problem with their "like new" car they bought here. Check engine light on the next day. Comforting right? Not a good place to find quality, honest mechanics. After months of searching their site for the "perfect" car to replace my trusted Mercedes Benz, I found one and it's not in Burbank. I went in with my wife to have our car appraised and we waited a good 30 minutes for an appraisal, not bad especially that they are under major remodeling. I will say for the record though that they don't have the friendliest front desk person. I stood in front of the person on the podium for a good 3 minutes and he simply stared back, I smiled to signal that I am here to make a deal and he simply looked, perhaps waiting for me to speak first. I was giving him the courtesy because he had his headset on and probably listening to instructions or something, anyway that was the worst part so there. We had the car we wanted transferred from Irvine to Burbank and it took 3 days but our sales person had to reschedule our meeting 2x so we ended up waiting a week but it's not that big of a deal. We did our routine test drive ,got our other car appraised and sold (for fair market value). Since we weren't financing the car we were in and out in 3 hours, still a long time but much shorter than dealing with a traditional dealership. The car we found was very low miles. We saw some scratches and dings which were gladly taken cared of by our salesperson and our car was delivered to us the same day in pristine condition. I left a star out for the wait time and lack of "customer friendly" treats, like a decent coffee and bottled water at least. Plus the 3 hours for no financing deal was kinda long. But overall, great service from the salesperson to the closer and the detailing crew. Will definitely shop Carmax for all our future car purchases. read more

Do some research and avoid CarMax. I'm glad I did. Go to Trade In Solutions in West LA (Check their reviews, they are real and I witnessed it myself today). 1) Wait time = I had an appointment at 12 Noon, I could not get myself out until 1:30PM. 2) Employee = Very nice, but doesn't mean anything if you get a shitty price (see below) 3) Offered price = $300 for my 2002 Camry. I was honestly not even expecting anything for this car and ALMOST accepted the offer. A few days later, I went to Trade In Solutions TODAY and got $1,000 (!!!) for the same car, and the appraiser was even careful to tell me this because he thought I would think it's too little!! In and out in 30 minutes with check in your hand as long as you are the title holder (not just registered owner) 4) Ownership = If your car is owned by someone else, like your parents or something, it's still not that hard but CarMax required ME to mail paperwork to my mother, who then would have had to sign AND get notarized. At Trade In Solutions, THEY overnight fedexed all the paperworks to my mother with shipping return label (!!!) requiring only her signatures and no notary!!! The check will be sent to me under my name, I ALSO got a free ride home with Uber they paid for!! Everyone, seriously do your researches. Don't settle for some bullshit you should not settle for. DO NOT risk buying a car from carmax, unless you have a reliable mechanic thoroughly check your car before your brief buyers warranty wears off. First of all, the dealer literally did a slight of hand and used a non- working key to open my car, then the working one to start it. Playing it off like it was no big deal the one didn't work the first time and was switching them around. Sold it to me as having two keys. I was dumb and excited and now I have learned to triple check everything that has to do with car buying, even from a "reputable" company. A couple months later had to pay $200 for a new key because the working one died. They also sold it to me with the radio screaming "Bluetooth unable to connect" in French, saying that was a setting you could turn off. It was not, had to bring it in for repair. Since I bought my car there TWO years ago for $10,000 I have since had to put over $5,000 worth of maintence in. Four months ago after my second big break down I had them estimate it to sell it back, they offered $3,500. Since then I payed $4,000 to fix the timing chain, coolant pump and other miscellaneous things, I brought it back the other day and they offered me $1,500! read more

Don't sell your car to CarMax because, I was told, the car stays in your name until it's sold. So, parking tickets or toll charges it incurs while in another state are sent to you. I'm told that CarMax will take care if it but I've had to call and fax them twice so far. I wonder if liability is also on you and how they're going to fix that? Sounds frightening. Carmax likes to hype the fact that they'll give you more for your car than trading it in at a dealership. Unfortunately, I fell for the hype and wasted my time taking our 2007 Ford Explorer to the Burbank location. A fella named Albert helped us and was very nice. Another fella named Chris did the appraisal and he was equally nice. Albert looked up similar inventory they had that was selling for $15,000 or more, so I was hopeful about what they'd offer us. But despite our car being in pristine condition, checking up in top notch in all areas and having very low mileage at only 54k, they only offered us $7,000. We then went straight to the car dealership where we were buying our new car and without even haggling or negotiating, they offered us $7,500 on the spot, which we accepted. I live just a few miles away - bought 3 cars in total from CarMax - paid top dollar and paid for extended warranty with rental car coverage. AND THE VERY FIRST TIME that I really needed service because one of the cars is not even able to be driven - I was told I had to wait WEEKS for a service appt. OR I could take the car to the dealership and pay the deductible and deal with everything myself. So what was the point of buying a car close to my home and all the warranty? Spoke with Corporate - and truly - you are buying a 3rd party warranty and they could care less. HORRIBLE. Soooo overall my car is pretty dope but this BS that came alone with it isn't. I purchased a 2011 sonata that should have told me red flags from the beginning . First red flag the stereo needs a new subwoofer, no biggie right? Second red flag , AFTER I decide I want to get the car and begin the paper work process im told the car has a recall on the power steering ! ... ummmm huh? No worries since I can take it to the manufacturer... take to Hyundai in Glendale and after fixing my issue the give me a list of all that still needs to be fixed! Third red flag- Sooo I had barely and fluids in my car and my cabin and engine air filters needed replacement ? Ok CarMax , we didn't "inspect" that when buying the car from the previous owner, or before I drove off the lot!? Like come on now at least put some oil in the car you sale! Soooo then take back to CarMax to fix that issue.. and a week passes and my radio will now not turn off when I turn off the ignition.. then driving from work air mysteriously stops working .. all I'm thinking is how fucking great! I've now had the car less than three weeks and I'm taking it back twice !? 4th red flag. In told my car will be fixed in about 2-3 hours and I chose the option to wait since they won't take you more than 6 miles, after waiting about 3 hours I'm told my car will need to be kept there to be fixed ? Now I'm getting pissed ! I'm told I'll get a "loaner" car which is fine since I'm not left stranded but turns out , this car doesn't have air and it's 99 degrees outside ! Sooo now I have to take this car back AGAIN and get ANOTHER one ! By this time I'm yet to curse anyone out because I consider myself a friendly person, but my patience was definitely being tested! So I needed a new compressor for my air conditioner, new shifter, new something for my steering wheel since it made noise, and a new subwoofer. I'm initially told my car will be ready Tuesday 9/13 (dropped off Friday EARLY morning at 7am9/9)then I'm told Friday, then Monday, and finally on Wednesday 9/21 almost two weeks from drop off my car was ready ! Im pissed because I filled that stupid loaner tank up before dropping off and turns out I didn't even need to buy MY car was on E -_- you guys get two stars because I actually like my car but somebody has to do better "inspections" on your vehicles , how are you sending people off with no fluid though ? I took my car here to get appraised after received a low-ball offer from Toyota of Hollywood. I had never been to a CarMax and was expecting the worst. I met Lucy, the associate who helped me with the appraisal. It was pretty painless and we had a great time chatting while waiting for the results. Great news! CarMax appraised my car $3000 more than what Toyota of Hollywood said was their best offer. Pretty cool. I went home and did more research on the cars they have. I found a car that I liked but it was in Buena Park and non-transferable. I drove down there and picked it up today. On June 29th, 2015, I called and Tovmas was very concise and clear when i asked questions and i asked a lot of questions so i wouldn't waste my time or his. He mentioned that someone else was gonna help me when i got there so jordan helped me and he is very courteous and caring from start to finish. He did all he could to help me out but, unfortunately my payment expectation was not met but, I totally understand due to certain circumstance, that's how that goes. The entire process was extremely quick and easy. When I later went to purchase my new car, I found out that I would have gotten more had I returned it to the dealer. In all fairness, I didn't think I would stay in the Acura family so at the time I was just trying to get it out of my hands. I loved my car. I cried for hours during the signing process and even when I left the lot. Gary Kasabyan helped me through it all. He was there when I went in for the appraisal and stayed by my side until I returned my keys. It felt good to have someone there. I bought a Mercedes CLK 350 a few months ago. The Carmax sales guy (maybe Armen or something like that) was nice as ever, but he knew nothing about my car, so he brought out the service guy. The service guy informed me that I had Blue Tooth capability. After I made my purchase, I took the car to a Real Mercedes dealer to have the Blue Tooth hooked up, only to find out that I'd have to pay an additional $2500 to buy the system for Blue Tooth capability installed. Finally got an answwr that it would be 3WEEKS to even see the car to diagnose our car.UNACCEPTABLE!! I called business iffice and spoke to FRANK. He promiswd he would resollve our issues. He said he walked my inquiry over to amanager. There are 10. NEVER A CALL BACK.. I called FRANK. 5hours later andAGAIN he promised me a calll back! . AGAIN NO REPLY!! The next day I reached iut to a sales manager ANTHONY and now I asked for GM Mr. Robinson. ANTHONY a sales manager for a whole 6 months told me that the GM cannot accomidate me with my car as to getting in the service depatment sooner due to severity of my problem. Recently sold our 10 year old SUV here and the process was totally quick and painless. We walked in and was greeted by a person named Chris (wish I remembered his last name...) who was so incredibly professional and friendly - we were impressed and felt like we lucked out with him. After the appraisal we got an offer that was at least $2K more than I expected based on prior research on kbb.com, and double the offer I got from carvana.com. I don't know how they were able to give us such a good offer but I certainly ain't complaining! The whole thing took a little bit over an hour and I even got some work done on my laptop while I was waiting for the appraisal. The waiting area is a bit lacking but the quickness of the whole thing compensated for it. This is my second time selling a car to Carmax and this time the process felt even faster and more efficient than I remembered from a few years ago. This review is on the Service Department... I took in my Lexus RX350 for repair. I was told they needed to find out if the problem was covered by my warranty prior to giving me a rental. I would have to wait 3-4 hours before knowing. Keep in mind that it was on my way to work about 8:30 am ... When I called I spoke to Olivia and she said it would be less than an hour to know. I couldn't wait the 3-4 hours so I had to call a friend to pick me up and take me to work. I was promised a call within 3-4 hours to be notified if I could get a rental. 8 hours later after trying to call them multiple times and no one answering the phone... Linette called me and said I could go back and get a rental. 7 days later around 4:30pm I get a msg from Linette saying I could pick up my car anytime. Just to go to enterprise and turn in my rental and they would drive me back to Carmax. Since it was 4 30 and I wouldn't make it to Carmax in time before the service dept. Was closed I went the next day. Christmas Eve... I got dropped off by enterprise in the Carmax parking lot. When I realized that they were closed. The driver had left and I found myself stranded with no rental and no one at carmax to give me my car. In the message... She NEVER said that they would be closed the next 2 days. Worse experience ever! When I showed up 2 days later and told her... She simply said " I am sorry you experienced that... But your total is this" she didn't even make eye contact with me. read more

Thought I would get an estimate from them - or as they insist on calling it, "an offer"- and this is what happened: They have plenty of parking, and you can even park in their structure, in the shade. Good start. The place has clearly been remodeled recently as it's very clean, open-plan, spacious and has a lot of seats available while you wait to be seen. Still good. I went without an appointment, so gave them my name and my turn came up pretty quickly. Great. This is pretty much where the positives end. The rep, Otis, never introduced himself (thank goodness for name tags) and was a total semi-sleazy salesman the entire time we spoke. The whole time he was just trying to sell me something else, asking why I wanted a quote (sorry, "offer"!), telling me all about their many locations (why do I care?), how they can get cars from many miles around if you don't see what you want on their lot (I don't want to buy anything from you, dude), they also offer maintenance when you purchase from them (though NOT at all free, like some actual big-name dealers), dissing KBB and how their data is "3 years old" whereas CarMax uses "current market data within the past 2 weeks" (but of course, wouldn't name the source of this data), etc. He then takes down far too much information for my liking. And the best part - they take your keys and inspect the car without you being there by the car. Even when I expressed this was not okay for me and I handed my keys over VERY reluctantly and ONLY because he assured me I would be going to the car with them, it became obvious when we got to the car he had clearly already gone by himself, inspected and sat in the car himself before they even came to get me to do the full inspection. I know this because of the comments he made about the vehicle and mileage, and the questions he was asking as we stood by while the inspection was being done by his colleague. NOT COOL!! To then have the audacity and arrogance to joke about "oh, we wouldn't steal your car" really annoyed me. The icing on the cake - and the real reason for this review - was that the "offer" they made was literally $2K under the actual value of the car. Talk about LOL!! The one star here is just for the speed of this totally BS service (maybe I got lucky). I had heard of others getting low offers from them in the past but thought things may have changed, or that maybe each car would be treated differently. If I could give -5 negative stars, I would!! I bought a Hyundai Tucson 2012 with 26k miles on it on July 2nd, 2016. A week later I was unable to start the car and the battery light went on. I didn't give it a thought and had my neighbor jump start the car. Two weeks later, while driving full speed on the freeway, the car just STOPPED DRIVING. I had to be towed by Triple A while managing to get the car to the side of the freeway. It was Friday prior to 6pm and NO ONE picked up the phone at their office. The next day when I called, I was told that even though I pay for MAXCARE, I was unable to get a loan car because my insurance wouldn't cover the transfer to a loan car for the days that my car is in repair. In stead, I would need to rent a car and try to get it reimbursed. Really CARMAX??? Not to say that this all happened within 30 days of the sale, a 20k car that breaks down on the middle of the free way. The best thing of all was that the Business Guy, named Nubar, told me I had to pay for the tow to Carmax to have it repaired. I had to tell him I would take him to Small Claims Court if he wouldn't proceed to pay and organize the tow. Finally they came and now I have to wait - god knows how long- before I get my car back. But my trust is completely gone. NO CORPORATE ACCOUNTABILITY WITH CARMAX. Completely dishonest in what they sell and what they promise. A 26k car of 2012 should not break down on the free way after one month. And they should provide a loan car under all circumstances, given the fact that their technicians did totally overlook very basic defaults of this car.
