When we travel, we seek dim sum. Why? It's just our thing. So once our plane touched down in…read moreBoston, we went straight to Chinatown. This place has it all in a great Chinese restaurant: traditional dim sum dishes done well, a little grit, staff who get the job done but aren't the friendliest. The food was excellent. For that reason alone, I'd go back.

Looking for something to eat after landing at BOS airport, my husband and I decided to explore Chinatown. Figured we could do some dim sum for a late breakfast, early lunch (the time was a little after 10:35 am). Found this of one of a few places to have dim sum, we decided to come here since we weren't too far from it on foot. When we walked in, I let the employee know that we are a party of 2. Because this is a smaller restaurant, we were sat at a large round communal table. I am definite not a fan of this style of seating but it's fine (although we had walked passed another dim sum restaurant that was fancier that did not have tables like that and saw that 2 people were just sat at a table by themselves and wished we had gone to that restaurant instead. But didn't see this restaurant until after we had already had our meal). After looking over the menu, we ended up getting: Chicken Feet, $6.99 prior to tax- My husband got this for himself. I am not a big fan of chicken feet and only eat maybe 1 at most. But I wasn't really in the mood to eat it. But he enjoyed it. Choy Shum, $11.95 prior to tax- I love to have vegetables at every meal, when possible. So we ordered these vegetables, which were nice and tender and they were nice. I do like that the oyster sauce wasn't as heavily drizzled on top, which was nice. Shrimp Rice Noodle, $6.99 prior to tax- This came in an order of 3. These were good but standard. Pork Siu Mai, $6.99 prior to tax- I thought these tasted okay, just a little oily. Tea, $1.25 per person- You are charged this fee per person, regardless if you drink tea or not. --------------------------------- (Total= $37.90 after tax, prior to tip) Please note that to order, you just mark what items you want on a paper menu and then the food items will be brought out to you. This is supposed to be the fresher way of food items, since the idea is that it is made to order instead of staying inside a cart that may end up getting dry as it gets pushed around the restaurant. This place supposedly takes credit card, as there was a visa logo sticker in their entrance window. But when asked the employee who gave us the bill if they take credit card, she told us that cash is preferred (which is funny because this one Caucasian family sitting at our table looked a little freaked out because I think they were planning on paying with credit card). My husband ended up paying with two twenty dollar bills. The employee was just standing right next to my husband and asked if we need change. My husband said no (my husband was planning on leaving additional tip on the table before leaving). She then pointed to the bottom of the bill of the suggested tip and seemed rather pushy and insistent that we leave a tip (well a higher tip). So my husband (although feeling awkward), pulled out a few more dollars and gave it to her. She seemed satisfied and then walked away. I have never gone to any dim sum restaurant where tip was pushed upon and that a server would be so pushy and aggressive about it. I have also read from a few other Yelp members that have also experienced the same thing on their dining experience. It is a good thing I don't live in Boston because I would never come back to this restaurant if I did.

Perhaps a tourist menu for us beginners eager to eat, but in need of pictures and descriptions so we can select all these delectable dishes. They brought a pot of hot tea automatically. The Yelp entry says Empire Garden, but the exterior awning also says "Emperor's Garden." They are one and the same. The left set of doors enters the main stairway to the 2nd floor where the large theater dining area awaits you. Despite communication gaps, we managed to point at Fried Chive Wontons, delicious. Steamed Shrimp Dumplings, we think -- so good. Fried Rolls but skinny -- we couldn't tell you what they were (and they couldn't tell us what they were either, LOL). Shumai, which we also did not know what it was, and they just kept repeating it as if we might understand eventually. :) We finally just gave in and got some and they were excellent, whatever they were. Little meaty steamed open-top dumplings. And a GINORMOUS order of pork fried rice that was so excellent. After seeing us struggle with chopsticks like the amateurs we are, they also brought us forks. :) We accidentally got a plate of sweet rolls with some kind of custard filling, because the well-meaning lady really put the Push in Pushcart and kept urging them toward us. Did not know they were going to be sweet but they were tasty and donut-sized. Now, for us, this was all a riot and part of the fun of the experience. Especially since everything was so tasty. All of this food was $58, which seemed a very good price for this much nosh in Boston. In the heart of Chinatown, yet very close to Downtown Crossing and the Paramount Theatre. If you don't speak Cantonese or Mandarin but you're up for a delicious adventure in a terrific vintage dramatic atmosphere that does not need to be updated One Single Bit, give Emperor's Empire Garden a try.

I have had several dishes and they all are so tasty, plated beautifully and it makes your time here a treat! China Pearl was the site of a very special event and the restaurant not only opened their doors to all the guests but they served all of us with a variety of delicious foods! Our server could not have been any more accommodating and made the guests feel welcomed! The area was set up with several cloth covered tables, Balloons, Flowers, to accommodate the many who attended for a wonderful BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION for Quincy's own FIRST TIME ELECTED School Committee Member, " TOM LEUNG ", with a huge sheet cake decoration in Red, White and Blue Frosting and with 250th USA Anniversary and SNOOPY with HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM that fed over 50 happy guests. Quincy's own Ward 2 City Councilor RICHARD ASH came in attendance and a DJUNNA PERKINS, Victory Winner at the Sept 1 Primary for District Attorney of Norfolk County!, were one of the few Elected Officials also in attendance to wish TOM Best Wishes. The guests all sang HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO TOM, and the cake cutting began! CHINA PEARL MADE THIS CELEBRATION VERY MEMORABLE! THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HELP! My parents owned the spot years ago when it was Timmy Cafe. They sold the spot to Laurence's mom and she in turn sold it to him. The space is bright and the food is fire. There's not a lot of seating but there's a steady stream of people ordering to go. Laurence will also host pop up experiences for local chefs. My daughter loves their plain congee. I'm a big fan of the Rubato Fun Fun. The brisket in there tells you that Laurence knows how to make Chinese brisket the right way. They also have an amazing brisket steamed bao. The Fun Fun is loaded with everything you would want on a cheung fun dish mixed together. The highlight for me and keeps me coming back is the bolo fried chicken sandwich. There's so much going on between the sweet, flaky, and fluffy bolo bao, filled with a generous serving of a delectable fried chicken and saucy slaw. You get a complex mixture of flavors and textures in every bite. It can get messy, so lean forward and eat over your dish. I love that Laurence is often in the store and giving time to the fans of his TV cooking competitions. His team are also super competent and kind. I used Rubato catering for an event and the participants are still raving about the spread months later. Don't sleep on this local celebrity spot!

The first item we tried was the HK French Toast Lava Egg Yolk which tbh is always a winner for my husband and I no matter where we get it. The second item we tried was the Cha Siu Bolo Bao. I'm usually not a big cha siu person so it was just okay for me. The bolo bao is also not quite what I expected, it has a different texture to it than most bolo baos. Overall not bad but just not for me. The last item was the salt pepper chicken with rice which we didn't expect much from but loved. The chicken has a nice crunch but also juicy. The seasoning used is also delicious. All in all a delicious meal and we will definitely be back! I'd skip the bolo bao next time though.
