Came here during the pop up for Spirits of the Bayou after months of watching videos on their channel and had some high expectations. Unfortunately, I felt the experience fell flat for me and felt underwhelmed in general. First, let's start with the little things. It wasn't a a very busy night being the Thursday before Halloween. I had made reservations and was seated right away. I ordered their special cocktail with their mug which was 26 but you get a free drink in it and 50% off the other cocktails. I forgot the name of the drink I ordered but felt it was very unbalanced and too sweet. It as supposed to have dark rum, coconut, tropical flavors and grenadine. The grenadine was the only thing I could taste. I ordered the Mac and Cheeee bites and Cuban sliders. When the first order came, I was brought any napkins unlike other tables and had to finally catch the man who was working the bar as he never came by again after he dropped off the food. The food was disheartening after following videos and seeing pretty plates. The offerings were items I could go anywhere to get. Everything was OK. Perhaps next time I can visit and taste offerings from the normal menu. read more

I came here with my brunch group and it was definitely a vibe with a DJ on the ones and twos! Street parking. More of a slab building. Left side restaurant, middle restrooms, right side bar area. Decorated on a Caribbean vibe. Plenty of seating and couches and chairs . Jill was our server, she was very attentive, friendly, and speedy. I ordered the Caribbean scrambler. It was just ok. It came with all the ingredients I wanted but the seasoning was still lacking. Salt and pepper was applied and it was still bland. I was a bit disappointed but the mimosas made up for it. Grapefruit and Peach was our juice choice and it did not disappoint . Fruit bowl was absolutely delicious and fresh. Restroom was clean and unisex. Came to try the new menu 6/7. We had Fried Red Snapper, Mac N Cheese. And Calamari for a starter. The food was amazing. It took us about 30 minutes after arriving to receive our drinks. It didn't appear to be super busy for a Saturday night. Our food took a bit to come out too. I attributed that to maybe the new menu. That would be my only negative mention. We will definitely be back. The patio has a very relaxed great vibe. With tables to dine. And couches to sit around if you're having drinks with friends. The website does mention mocktails but I didn't see any listed on the new menu. Which could just be an oversight. read more

There is an amazing Halloween Popup at Calypso called "Spirits of the Bayou" and it's an absolute treat! The atmosphere was spooky and festive, with incredible decorations for an immersive experience. The highlight for me was the skeleton fish, which were not only creative but also #stlouispescatarianapproved! Let's get those tarot cards read. What a fun addition! As for the drinks, they were as creative as they were delicious. My personal favorite was the Grim Reaper Margarita. On the food side, everything we tried was excellent. The brains and blood Mac n Cheese bites were creamy on the Janice, creamy in the inside, while the bayou shadow dip had just the right amount of spice and richness. I just stopped in Calypso to check out the "spirits of the Bayou" Halloween pop-up. And it was so neat! They did such a great job with the decorations. I can tell they definitely put a ton of thought and time into the decor. Well worth it. Sitting at the fire pit was super neat. Perfect weather outside on the patio, the drinks were yummy and the food was delicious. I seriously want to go back so I can try all of the other food items that I didn't get to try the first time. I was so impressed. The only negative was that service took a little bit. With the craft cocktails and smaller kitchen, things do take a bit. So just be prepared for that. read more

We bought tickets to their Christmas pop-up event called 'Ornament', I was a little nervous seeing the previous reviews for their events but went in with the expectation of the bar being busy and the staff being overwhelmed, but that was far from our experience! We decided to go at their first time slot at 5:30 and we were seated at our table and brought water and champagne immediately. The wait staff was great and attentive, the time between us placing our order (we ordered drinks, an app, and entrees at the same time) and getting our food/drinks was only 15 minutes! Getting boxes and a check was equally efficient! We ordered the Cajun chicken pasta and the Mac and cheese balls for food. The Mac and cheese balls were the star of the show, but the pasta wasn't super flavorful. It was what you would expect from a bar that serves food! We ordered the toasted marshmallow old fashion and the butter pecan White Russian both were delicious. The only complaint we had was that while waiting for the doors to open, a group of workers had shown up and before entering the building they turned to a group of 3 young girls behind us and loudly proclaimed that they looked beautiful followed by an extremely disrespectful and inappropriate remark that left everyone feeling uncomfortable. I have been waiting to try this restaurant for a long time. I'm so glad I went. I knew it was Cajun themed with a touch of Caribbean and Creole fused together. The restaurant is super cute! It's in Soulard and would be the perfect place to hang out in the summertime for a nice dinner or even brunch! I believe the chef mentioned that they were in the middle of transitioning the menu so I'm not really sure if the food that we had was part of the old menu or the new menu.... either way the food was great. Everything had great seasoning, not too hot, the appropriate amount of heat needed for creole and Cajun food. The portion sizes were huge! The crabcakes were probably the best. I've tasted in a very long time. Everything was just genuinely good. We had so much fun and enjoyed ourselves so much. The chef seems to be very passionate about food and I loved his story about what made him interested in food and the influence of his grandmother! Plantain chips with spicy Apricot jam, nuts, "special" hummus, sweet potato fries with garlic yogurt sauce,chicken wings.. they were all delicious. + Service was fast. My friends and I tried their Halloween pop up. The drinks were okay. I tried my friends pumpkin martini and it tasted a bit watered down. The presentation of the drinks were outstanding and I could tell they put a lot of effort into the way they look, just wished they tasted as good as they looked! Some of the Halloween decor was really cool, but I was hoping for more of a Halloween experience since you had to pay ahead of time for tickets. You couldn't order any other cocktail outside of the Halloween drink menu but they did have 2 canned beer options we ended up getting after our cocktails. This has been the new hot spot in STL and I couldn't wait to try it. Their small plates menu was perfect and the cocktail menu was off the charts! I ordered the Caipriñha and the "You're Killing me Smalls" cocktail. Both had such a different flavor and were absolutely delicious. We only stayed for a few drinks so we ordered the Sweet Plantains and we're so happy with our choice. The Cajun spice packed a nice punch to the sweet plantains. Updating a previous review: I stand by my statement that the cocktails are outstanding. I'm updating to say: if you're in a hurry or you're an inpatient person, this might not be your place. We've been here multiple times now, and it takes foooooorever to get a cocktail. Way longer than it should. Several times, I've waited 10-15 minutes to get a simple cocktail such as a Manhattan. You're almost better off to order 2 at a time, because it's difficult to get anyone to come back to your table. Staff are so very friendly. I was really excited to check out the Spirits of the Bayou pop-up by Calypso. And sadly it left me wanting in several ways. The reservation price for a table at this pop-up is disappointing, as it doesn't provide any credit for food or drinks. That would have been a huge improvement, if it was implemented. The staff was friendly, but service was extremely slow. Over 45 minutes to receive our first round of drinks, and well over an hour to receive any food. Our server told us that the ticket machine for the kitchen had technical issues, but a larger party seated after us got their food much faster. The prices are high for what you get (on top of the reservation price). To Calypso's credit, the food is really great. I had the jerk chicken plate and my friend had the wings and fries. We shared the Mac n cheese balls. Seasoning was stellar on all the dishes, but the broccoli with my plate was way overcooked. It felt like mush in my mouth. Again, service did its best with the conditions, but the ambience alluded to in the event description was notably absent. No theatrics to be found, sadly. Expectations aside, it was okay. read more

I enjoyed my chicken wings (hot, tasty, crispy), fries, and to my surprise the #deviledeggs ! I normally don't like anyone's but my own or my mom's. My bartender/server Logan was top tier! Paid for a holiday pop up table last night. Had been told there were fire pits, good ambiance, food, drinks, etc. got there and patio doors were closed, no fires. Only food options were puppy mix and chips/dip. Paid $28 a piece for collector cups that are junk plastic and can't even be washed. Service felt forced, not welcoming at all. $200 plus the original cost for the table. Felt like a total Christmas money grab and rip off. We had to go to dinner somewhere else afterwards and should have just started there and saved the $265 at Calypso. read more

The cocktails were really good and i loved the containers and themes they added to them. The decorations were amazing, definitely could see the theme and the bar entrance from the side was all decked out and looked awesome. I was very excited to try this place. The vibe is immaculate and the drinks were both interesting a good with many high quality spirits. Saying that.... On a Thursday evening it was extremely dead and I can see why..... The FOOD! I'm not sure who created this menu but it's almost like they threw everything from the Black diaspora on the menu from New Orleans to the Caribbean to Africa and none of it was executed well. The worst and weirdest salad I've ever had in my life. Like bagged romaine mixed with trail mix and peppers with hard bread in it (canned pineapple, banana chips, dried apricot??). The NoLa barbecued shrimp was not grilled at all. The bread service, all the bread was hard as a rock, came with a weird mix of cucumbers and mango (which had be cut with onion knife - yummy onion mango). The pepper jelly (store bought) was good. There's no clear thought to creating or executing to this menu. It looks like someone just said let's throw some Black sounding stuff on her cuz it's a Caribbean themed spirit bar. It was a spring afternoon and we were driving around in Soulard looking for something a little different than the usual dive bar. Something with some nice ambience and drinks more advanced than a liquor with a splash of soda. Calypso filled that need and more. They have an extensive variety of liquor. The drinks are a little pricey, but totally worth it. The bartenders are true masters at their craft. We meet the manager and the owner. It's a new place and there are still a couple of bugs to work out. The food menu wasn't quite ready when we were there, but we'll keep going back for the drinks. Weird vibes! Went on a Saturday night and it was dead. The music was super loud. Our waitress left to go smoke multiple times during the evening and was also constantly pulling down her shorts (as, I suppose, they were too short?). Out of plantains....?! My sister decided to take me here for my birthday. What a disappointment! It was their Christmas pop up! The place was decorated really nice but that's all I can say. We ordered spinach artichoke dip which was loaded with huge pieces of artichoke. Once removed, not much dip left but the wonton chips were tasty! We both had chicken pasta which was saucy with not much chicken. My sister packed hers up so she could add chicken at home plus to soak up some of the sauce. We attempted to order two of their specialty drinks (only cocktail that contains tequila) and they were out of tequila. The server was all over the place and mistakenly charged us for the two cocktails that we didn't receive. The prices were pretty steep especially for basic pasta. The reservation fee is ridiculous and should be applied towards your order. I was upset with the money my sister spent. What a failed birthday celebration. Calypso was a vibe! Omg I love this place. If you're looking for a spot to take someone on a date, or meet someone casually over drinks, this is definitely your spot! The vibe was just everything you could ask for, from the low light mood to the fire pits. I had a really pretty drink, but I wasn't a big fan of it, but that's just my taste. I'm usually a fruity drink girl, but it was giving a bit more sophisticated than what I like to go for. My friend got the blue Hawaiian, which is what I would've went for when I tried hers. For food, I got the beef patty and my friend got the sari with spiced shrimp. I felt as though my beef patty lacked flavor, so I'd probably try something different, but the asaro was very flavorful. The service was perfect, they were nice and quick. Again, I think this place would be great for grabbing drinks, and maybe I'd try something simple on the menu. I was SO excited to try Calypso. What better time to do so than their Halloween Pop Up. While they finally posted an FAQ, I wasn't sure what to expect. I purchased tickets for the inside for my bday. We arrived and the Halloween decor was on point. Inside and out. There was a little wait at the check in spot with the hostess. I honestly think she was bussing tables and trying to seat people simultaneously. We were finally taken to our seats. Bar seats to be exact. They were at the far left of the bar. One of us would've been sitting where the bar tender places drinks. Not cool for us or the people receiving drinks. We would've been breathing over them. We were able to move to the opposite end. GREAT! While I appreciated the theme music, it was SO LOUD that we couldn't hear ourselves and it was difficult to get the bartenders attention. To be seated at the bar, the bar tenders were SUPER busy and responsible for taking food orders as well. Needless to say...it took a while. The drinks had very interesting names so I settled for the themed margarita. It was so sweet. I asked for a Manhattan to avoid what I imagined all the other drinks tasted like...sweet. It was the most interesting non-manhattan tasting manhattan. The bartender knew I wasn't happy. At that point I just gave up. We ordered the chicken and pasta dish. The pasta was cooked al dente. PERFECT! The sauce was tasty. The chicken on the other hand had no real flavor. FAIL we decided to order dessert. We ordered the pumpkin cheesecake. It arrived undressed. No whipped cream or anything to make it look presentable. Just cheese cake on a plate. My best friend didn't like the ginger snap crust. Would've been nice to have that in the description. THIS is where I chose to have my birthday dinner. I was disappointed. Oh and to have to pay for seats to experience what really?! Oh it was FREEZING inside and I had a jacket on. So uncomfortable. Went to a fun Halloween themed event. Nice atmosphere me seating was good a we. Patio venue in heart of Soulard.

NOT because of the food. In fact, food was outstanding. We had a brunch reservation for 6. When we arrived, we were the second group in the outside dining area. We were not in a hurry so the slow service wasn't an issue. At first. However, 2 ordered the Calypso Platter which is Eggs, Meat, Potato and a Waffle. 1 ordered the Calypso salad. 1 ordered the Chicken and Waffles. 1 ordered Stuffed French Toast. And, I ordered Plantains with a side of 2 eggs. The salad and chicken n waffles came out 30 min after we ordered. The French toast was next. After 60 min, only one of the calypso platters was served. And it was at this point, I was told that they were out of plantains. I asked for Shrimp and Grits. 90 min later, the final 2 were served. Meanwhile, the first two had to sit and watch everyone wait to eat for the next 60 min. Then our bill came with the plantains and eggs still on it. Couple that with profane laced music blaring from the kitchen, and it made for an irritating environment to relax, eat, and drink mimosas. They may have been short staffed, but there was only one other table with guests. While we sat, we watched at least two couples get sat and then leave without ordering. One can only assume it's because they were never served. Very disappointing considering the food was absolutely delicious. read more

Took my hubby here for Fathers Day. This place was absolutely TERRIBLE! Lets start with the wait, We ordered at 1:03pm and the food sis not arrive until 2:35. We were chatting so we didn't notice until another table left and said they have been waiting 2hrs. Now mind you it was NOT packed. The Food... Shrimp and grits... grits were so hard the plastic fork they gave me broke. Chicken was burnt and crispy on the out side, bloody and juice on the inside YUCK. It was a total waste of time. I wanted to share feedback about an unsettling experience my cousins and I had during a recent visit to Calypso for a Halloween-themed night. We had heard great things about the venue and chose it for a fun girls' night out, especially since we're all busy with our lives as mothers and wives. However, the night turned out to be far from what we expected. While we were initially excited, things took a turn for the worse. The drinks were disappointing, and although the food was okay, it took a long time to arrive. But what really made us uncomfortable was a lady coming over to offer an unsolicited psychic reading, which felt very bizarre and out of place. Shortly after, two men approached us in a way that made us feel incredibly uncomfortable, almost as if we were being harassed. This was the third unsettling incident, and at that point, we felt objectified, threatened, and endangered. The whole situation rattled us so much that we didn't even feel safe using the bathroom there--we left and went to QuikTrip instead. The aggression and strange events we encountered pushed us into a state of fight or flight. We even considered calling the police but decided to leave instead. This is unlike anything we've ever experienced, and needless to say, we won't be returning. I hope this feedback can be used constructively to prevent similar incidents in the future. read more

I honestly don't know how to give a worse review of this place. We paid to reserve a table at their pop up Halloween themed event and to say it was utter garbage would be generous. The tickets promised an immersive event with a haunted history of soulard and instead we got a poorly decorated bar where you had to wait over 45 minutes for a drink and witness the bartender yelling at the server then get a rude non-apology by the manager. Even if this place had been free, it still would have been a rip off. Instead, it's not only overpriced and horrible but downright fraudulent given the promotional promises of an immersive Halloween experience. Go here only if you hate yourself and like dining or drinking with miserable staff and servers.
