Honestly my experience here felt like a fever dream. My partner and I were looking somewhere to eat a late dinner on a Thursday night, and we stumbled upon this place. When we walked in, the place was empty, besides the singular bartender standing behind the bar. She told us to sit anywhere we wanted, so we chose a table near the bar. Then, she politely asked us to move to the bar. She apologized and said she was new and that she didn't know what was going on. We started with an order of chips and salsa and shared a mango margarita on the rocks. Let's just say our marg was missing the rocks. The bartender forgot to add ice, so our margita was warm. She gave us a cup of ice to pour in. The marg itself wasn't very strong and tasted pretty syrup-y. Although the chips and salsa only cost us $2.50, I probably could've gone without. I don't think I would've liked them even if they were complimentary. The salsa was decent, but the chips were saltless and flavorless. We ordered two tacos and the arroz con pollo plate. My tacos came out at different times. Both were tiny and disappointing. I had the Hemp Avenue taco and the Sarah Street taco. The black bean juice was everywhere. The tortillas were dry and fell apart. They brought out a quesadilla instead of our arroz con pollo plate. We were confused, but the bartender insisted the order was correct. Then, a few minutes later, the correct plate was brought out. I guess I can't be mad that we scored a free quesadilla. However, it was quite soggy and the cheese was almost a rubbery texture. While we were there, a DJ started playing. The volume of the music went back and forth between increasingly loud and extremely quiet. None of the other staff members acknowledged us whatsoever. It felt like we weren't even there. I hate sounding so pessimistic, so I will say two positive things: their outdoor patio looks like a fun spot in the summer, and I bet this would be a great option if you've been out partying all night and need some food in your belly. We came here after leaving Just John's. It was a Sunday afternoon. I was in town visiting a friend. We parked for free on the street. There were a few people at the bar and one group sitting at a table. I'm not sure why they were so empty. We did a pitcher of casamigos margaritas that was only $42. That's a crazy steal, I pray for those type of deals in ATL. My only critique was that it was heavy on the OJ. Visited here for the first time following a blues game. It was a Tuesday night, which I presume as to why the place was pretty empty - it started to get a little bit busier as the evening stretched onward which is cool since their open past midnight. Our bartender/server was lovely. My partner and I ordered the chicken nachos to share. Glad we did because it was hefty! Covered in toppings and smothered in cheese. Wasn't in the mood for drinking, but I'll be open for next time. The restaurant itself was beautiful styled. Beautiful artwork along the walls, Tables scattered about the corridor, the bar centralized within the restaurant, and a lounging area to accommodate intimate settings and large groups. I just discovered this little spot in the Grove. I always love to add a new spot to my "late night" eats collection. They serve food until 1:30a weeknights....SCORE. Notes about the spot: if you're paying cash you have to order AT the restaurant(not so convenient) If you order an item online and request an alteration to the ingredients that isn't possible. They will not call you and let you know. They will take it off the order and refund you but most likely will not tell you when you pick it up. The restaurant asks that you call if you have to modify food and ask if it is possible and then place the order online because they do not take orders over the phone. (Not convenient but can be overlooked because they serve food so late.). The ambiance seemed nice and the bar was large. Was craving a burrito, and their Vandaventer (grilled chicken) burrito satisfied my craving! I have pretty high standards for burritos (from Cali) and I thought this one was a litttleee soggy - but that may be because of the guac and sour cream. Otherwise tasted good! I went here on a Sunday evening when there were two tables and at least 10 staff members working, and waited 40 minutes for 3 tacos. The premium margarita was horrible, at $15 a pop. I got the nachos with all three meats, for delivery. It was delicious! All the meats were juicy, flavorful, and it was a generous portion. Only improvement that could be made was the pico, guac, and lettuce portions were all too little...but everything was deconstructed for carry out, so don't know what portions they give in store. La Calle (Spanish for street) was an amazing experience for my wife, kids and me! We were lucky enough to be there the first day being open! From the menu that has the local street names for their items to the AMAZING Atmosphere (with local artists represented on the walls and an incredible patio!) We were already excited for our family night out. Once our food arrived our expectations were far exceeded. Even our picky eater had fun playing with flavors and trying new things (which is NOT normal for her). For the Lou/Grove locals this was the old Novak's! The meat (chicken and steak... yes, I had both, don't judge!) was incredible! Juicy, flavorful, and NOT overly cooked or rubbery!! Salsa and guac were on point as you would want, but the chips were something a bit different. Lite, crispy (but not easily broken in the salsa or guac) and additional salt was NOT needed (like I usually like it). Whether you're going out as a couple, as a family, or a late night in The Grove, La Calle has you covered!! My wife and I (and even the kids...) will definitely be back! I went for lunch on a Friday. The ambiance was 10/10. Very cool interior! I think they were understaffed so we were there over an hour, but the waitress seemed very busy. I understand. The corn had a unique presentation I hadn't seen before and tacos were tasty. It wasn't as much food as I was expecting but I plan to come back and try some other items. We ventured into La Calle to check it out and to get at bite to eat. Being patrons of this area for many years, we were excited to support a newer business. We walked in to find we were the only customers in the entire establishment which was a red flag. But, we really wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. After waiting an awkwardly long period of time, a waiter finally arrived at our table. We each ordered a quesadilla and cocktails. According to the menu, each quesadilla was to have beans and pico de gallo. Each quesadilla arrived with meat and cheese only. The taste was okay, but the ingredients were not as described on the menu. Probably the most disappointing was the drink pricing. They charge you for alcohol then charge you separately for a mixer (Sprite) making the total price of each drink $11.00 (served in a disposable plastic cup). You can literally walk across the street and have the same, exact drink for $5.50. I understand that food costs are likely crazy right now for restaurants. But for below-average service and average-at-best quality food, this is not worth the money. read more

The last 3 times I have been here bar service was terrible. I've never been served quickly or with friendliness. Even when I'm next in line or standing at a mostly empty bar counter I'd be ignored, usually taking at least 15 minutes for someone to wait on me. When La Calle first opened there was only one bartender that seemed to know what they were doing and that was attentive. Unfortunately I have not seen that bartender since. The icing on the shit cake experiences here happened on Dec. 21st 2024 I went there for a friends After Wedding Party and the Groom was the ONLY one of us frisked at the door. The biggest issue with this is he was wearing a kilt and the door guy just reached his hand up his kilt and grabbed his crotch! He did NOT pat down the outside of the kilt, he reached UP and UNDER and GRABBED my friend penis and balls. Last time I checked reaching up someone's kilt or skirt and fondling their genitals is NOT part of a pat down! After that we left. Dishonorable mention the bathrooms have never been clean when I've been here, even when La Calle first open and business was slow. I hate to be writing this review and honestly if the door guy had not violated my friends crotch I probably wouldn't be, I just woulda settled with never going back. BUT the reaching up someone's kilt or skirt is an insane thing to do in this context and most. Went to La Calle based on the good reviews. The food was good but service needs a bit of work. The wait person was polite but not attentive. We sent two glasses of water back. The first one had hair in the glass and the second one had a ant or fruit fly. The waiter never offered an apology but did take the water back to get another one. We were a party of three and despite him repeating the order back to us brought the wrong entre out. Again no apology just took it back. My husband and I went to this restaurant as a date night since it had been awhile since we had ventured out into the city. Overall, the restaurant was super cute on the inside- but the staff was a bit flighty. Our waters were not refilled at any point during our visit, as well as no napkins, salt/pepper, sauces, etc. My husband also ordered a burrito, and they served us the wrong one (I believe the kitchen staff dropped it off at the wrong table). I went to La Calle with a group of friends and it is such a great new spot! The walls are covered with murals from local artists which adds to the uniqueness of the restaurant. Our server, and the owner, Sebastian, was very attentive to us, and was on top of taking care of us, while also making fun conversation. No toilet paper or paper towel and old beers and cigs in a few stalls. Has potential, but def need some sort of training. VIsited on a Tuesday night at around 7pm. No waiter, had to order from the bartender. It was a busy night so not the easiest to get his attention but thankfully it wasn't impossible. They were out of vegan cheese. The Michelada I got was made really weird. First time I got it was a giant mug that looked and tasted like a Michelada. This one was in a regular glass and tasted like it was a mix between a margarita and a Michelada.. very strong alcohol taste which was weird.. definitely not a Michelada. After reading the reviews, I was excited to try this new Mexican restaurant. I got there around 5:30 and there was not a single soul there eating. We decided to eat out on the patio. The ground was littered with wet, napkins and straws. And the tables were a bit messy also. We ordered the chips and salsa and as people have stated before the salsa was a bit spicy but that was OK but the chips tasted as if they were a couple days old. I really, really, really want this place to succeed. It's a great location, the inside space has a great vibe, the food is delicious and the staff is friendly and always hustling. We went for the third time yesterday. The first time was during a festival and they did great by offering a limited menu and serving great tacos to a busy room. The second time we sat on the patio. Yesterday finding a clean table was a challenge. We wanted to sit outside but the patio was scattered and dirty. This place has the potential to win some "best patio in STL" award every year. But it's gotta get cleaned up. I finally got some napkins from the bar and cleaned our own table inside. I saw many people leave because there were no clean tables. They were not busy, there were plenty of tables they were just all dirty. Not thrilled about ordering food at the bar and then getting a number and having it delivered to the table. But it was the model so we did it. We ordered a Premium Margarita while we waited on our dinner. It was served in a plastic cup and tasted like lemonade. It took 45 minutes for our dinner to be delivered to our table. We didn't order another drink. I'm glad the Modelo folks were there handing out free beer so we had something to drink when our food finally arrived. The food was great! Good flavor and great presentation.
