First time trying this restaurant. We placed a phone order and that went smoothly. When we went to pick up our order it took about 10 more minutes but the staff was kind, several people made sure we had been helped, offered us water/a drink while we waited. The food was also very good! read more

When I wanted to grab some lunch after church today, I thought about El Maguey. Patience is a virtue for some of the best service from my waitress, Sophie. The environment is very enjoyable and the ambiance is wonderful. I had three hard shell beef tacos that were magical. This wasn't my first trip and definitely won't be my last. Thank you to Sophie and the owners of this beautiful establishment right in the heart of South city, keep up the good work. read more

Great food and awesome service!!! Highly recommend. Love the atmosphere. Treat yourself to one of the best Margaritas. Ask for the awesome blue drink. Yummy read more

Went on a Saturday evening around dinner time with the fam. There were at least several tables open, so we did not have to wait. Service was decent, and our waitress checked on us several times throughout the meal. Chips were fresh and warm and served with generous amounts of salsa. Tacos al pastor were piled high with meat and came with a mystery spicy sauce (watch out for the heat on this!). Also had two tamales which were pretty tasty. Fajita plates came out sizzling and smelled of amazing caramelized onions and peppers. Mexican rice and refried beans were a little generic but fine. Casual ambiance that is good for families and kids. Plenty of parking out front. Overall decent place for your average Mexican food fix. read more

El Maguey - Huevos Rancheros - Latin American Near Me - Saint Louis, Missouri

*Posting for my mom* So yesterday, May 27th, 2025, after a long day at work and a doctors appointment, my family and I decided to have take out. We decided on el Maguey, I called to place the order for pick up. A "lady" answered and when I told her I wanted to place an order for pick up she proceded to tell me, why dont you cook at home. I was taken aback and said I'm sorry? And she replied oh no tell me what's your order. At that point I thought maybe she was talking to someone on her end so I gave her my order then she asked me, are you coming home from work? I was silent thinking for sure she is talking to someone on her end, she proceeded to tell me, very rudely, im talking to you the one whose order im taking, so again im confused as to why the rudeness, but I finished placing my order and proceeded to go pick it up. Once there I said to the greeter im here to pick up my order and I asked who took this order and I asked to speak to the manager. The greeter realized who I was and said oh im sorry i confused you with someone else. I proceeded to insist on speaking to the manager and was told the manager wasn't there and wouldn't be there until 9pm, which by the way is the time the restaurant closes. She proceeded to apologize and said she wouldn't charge me for my habiscus drink (which upon getting home i saw my recipt and saw it was charged) I proceeded to give her some advice that next time she was on the phone with someone to make sure they are who she thinks they are before speaking to them that way. But I know she lied, she didn't confuse me with anyone else because when she asked if I was on my way home from work, she spoke as if to a stranger, she said, Im speaking to you the one whose order im taking, had she truly confused me with someone wouldn't she have referred to said person by their name? Either way that isnt any manner of speaking to someone, a customer of the business you work at, even if you know them, they are still a customer. I wasn't begging for food, I was placing an order, to pay for with my hard earned money!! I will NEVER again frequent this business. If you want rude and horrible service then yes go right ahead and go here. I learned my lesson! *** UPDATE TO REVIEW: I FINALLY GOT TO SPEAK TO "MANAGER" EMMANUEL, TODAY. HE RUDELY INTERRUPTED ME, DIDN'T LET ME FINISH TELLING HIM WHAT HAPPENED AND SAID SHE ALREADY SPOKE TO HIM ABOUT IT. SO I GUESS MY SIDE OF THE STORY WASN'T IMPORTANT, SINCE SHE ALREADY SPOKE WITH HIM. HE TOTALLY STUCK UP FOR THEIR RUDE EMPLOYEE. HE SAID SHE TOLD HIM ABOUT IT AND SAID SHE MADE A MISTAKE. AND THEN RUDELY ASKED ME WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO, FIRE HER? I CAN'T FIRE HER! I CAN'T GO OFF OF A HE SAID, SHE SAID, REALLY?? WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT?? GUESS THAT IS WHY THEIR RESTAURANT IS ALWAYS EMPTY! WHAT'S FUNNY IS SHE TOLD HIM ABOUT IT SO THERE WAS NO HE SAID, SHE SAID. THAT'S OK THOUGH THEY LOST SEVERAL CUSTOMERS BECAUASE I HAVE A LARGE FAMILY AND I WORK FOR A LARGE ORGANIZATION (HOSPITAL) WHERE A VAST NUMBER OF OUR PATIENTS ARE LATINOS. I WILL GET THE WORD OUT, ANY AND EVERY WHERE I CAN!! STAY AWAY PEOPLE THE STAFF AND MANAGERS AT EL MAGUEY ON KINGSHIGHWAY ARE RUDE AND NASTY TO THEIR CUSTOMERS, SPEND YOUR HARD EARNED CASH ELSEWHERE!!! I WONDER IF THE OWNER IS ALSO RUDE OR MAYBE HAS NO IDEA WHO HE/ SHE HAS WORKING FOR HIM/HER!!! read more

We've been several times and haven't really been disappointed yet. The food is always on par for what you'd expect of any american/mexican food. Same food, different location. But I do recommend this restaurant, this location at least. The chips (are warm and fresh) and salsa (not chunky, but not soupy) are really good. The margarita dip is nice with queso, pico, and ground beef. Oh!! This last time I got a few al pastor tacos and they load UP on the pineapple. I had to wade through it a little because they were huge chunks and there was a lot of them. Ok, hold up. Let me tell you about the spicy oil/sauce that came with it. Holy. Shit. I was given a little dish of the spicy pepper oil, whatever it's called and put a little on the first taco. Ok, a little too much. Burned my entire face off. It was soooooooooo good! But unless you can easily handle spicy I say take it easy on your first bite. Again, the rest of the food is as expected. No big surprises. I haven't strayed from the usual food choices, though, to be fair, so I can't speak for the entire menu. Next visits I'll have to try things that aren't ordered 75% of the time. Cheers! read more

The prices! We paid +$60 for two Chimi dinners that only came with a side of rice each since we opted out of beans and a cup of queso. Never again! read more

Oh my my. We stopped for lunch and I'm so glad we did. Prices are reasonable and you get a good amount of food and in this economy that is so welcome. I have been to other Mexican restaurants here in St.Louis but I haven't tried their enchiladas after being dissatisfied at other establishments. Being from south Chicago I know a good enchilada when I taste one. Today I took the plunge again and I'm happy to say it was delicious along with everything else. I will return often. My compliments to the Chef! read more

Their food is unremarkable, but it is close to me so I eat there when I don't want to drive far. Last time was at lunch on a weekday. I had the mixed lunch fahitas and the meat was tasty. The tortillas were soft and warm, but the sides were disappointing. There was a small amount of shredded lettuce with a little sour cream streamed over it and a few grilled onions, no grilled bell peppers, and small amount of refried beans. Not enough of any of it except the meats, and I am a light eater. Most Mexican restaurants serve gracamole with their fahitas, so I asked for some guac. My waitress brought me a hand-sized taco shell of guac which had small diced bell pepper, not cooked, in it. It was not tasty to me and they charged me an extra $5.99 for that. Next time I will drive a little farther because if I'm going to pay over $20. plus tip for lunch, I at least want tasty food. read more

Unfortunately, this was not good. The ranchero sauce was literally pizza sauce. Burrito was bland. Rice lacked flavor. The dip was good and service was good too! We didn't finish our plates and for us that's not a good sign. I think the food quality has gone downhill in the past couple years or maybe it varies by location, but this just wasn't worth it. read more

I had no idea there was another El Maguey location in South City- this location is much larger and cleaner compared to the Watson location. The décor is much more colorful- lots to look at. I went on a weekday evening and the place was dead. Only one other table was occupied while I was there. So, no waiting!! Can't wait to come back in the summer to sit on the patio (something the Watson location can't offer). The menu is different here than what I remember. I didn't see my "go-to" dish on the menu and the waitress was still able to get me what I wanted without second thought. The food was served very quickly and was very hot. Great service and the food was as expected. The only thing that would make this better would be if the food was better- but what do you expect for less than $10/person? read more

We did carry out. Ordered two orders of fish tacos, where's the fish? Literally had to hunt through to find less than one bit of fish. Just a lot of cheese. Nope not doing that again. El Maguey, you need to do better. If someone is paying for a decent item and you neglect to really add the main ingredient. What a rip off. read more

Complimentary chips and salsa were promptly delivered along with some cheese dip (reasonably priced) I ordered when I first sat down. I had more than enough chips, salsa, and cheese dip to last me the meal and then some. Then my chicken fajitas arrived, and the serving size was such a generous portion. I had 3 tortillas full while I was in the restaurant and was able to fill 4 more (same sized tortillas) with my leftovers! It reheated very well and smelled so good, my co-workers were jealous. read more

Do not drop acid and then go to eat at this restaurant. I repeat...DO NOT DROP ACID AND THEN GO TO EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT! You will freak out! Between the neon colored chairs and tables with 3-D sunshines with faces, each one brighter than the next, and the crazy murals (like the life size Native American that looks like it was painted by a 7-year old), it will not go well. That little bit of info was free. You're welcome. I don't know what's going on with this location but it is NOT the El Maguey I'm used to on Chippewa. There's no way this can be the same owners. First off - the prices are out of this world. $9.50 for a combo platter? My El Maguey would never! Also, the food was not the same. I ordered my favorite bean and cheese nachos and they came out with melted cheese on top, not queso dip. Aweful! No spicy bite to them at all. I was excited to have a newer, cleaner El Maguey in my neighborhood, but never again. I'm going back to the original Chippewa location. read more

El Magueyyyyy! The portions be cray. Don't come here if you don't want enough for two+ meals. Their service couldn't be better. Their food couldn't be more affordable. The street tacos are my favorite, along with the beef, pico de gallo, queso dip. That's right my friends, they do that great combo for you. And have a margarita :) they don't skimp on aaanything. Also note that any negative reviews are from, like, 3+ years ago. read more

Pretty average to below average meal here. I ordered a chicken chimichanga which was plated with guac salad, pico, and served with rice and beans. I also had a pork enchilada a la carte. The chimi was only slightly crisp and had more of a burrito texture. It was covered with a small amount of cheese dip. The chicken filling was disappointing, as it was mostly a thick, single chunk of VERY dry chicken breast that was difficult to ingest without large amounts of water. I had to pull it out and shred it myself, then cover it with salsa and beans to eat it. (It was not the expected flavorful and moist seasoned shredded chicken with tomatoes and/or chiles , nor did it taste grilled). The rice and beans were good, as was the salsa, which was slightly spicy, and flecked with cilantro. The pork enchilada was odd. It was big chunks of chewy pork, in a very sweet almost bbq-like sauce. It was ok for a quick lunch, but the quality control here needs attention. There are many excellent Mexican restaurants in the area. read more

I ordered carryout, but I changed my mind and asked to eat-in instead. I chose a table and the person behind the bar brought my food over. At that time I ordered a margarita and that is the last time anyone interacted with me until the individual who seated me brought me the bill for the margarita about 15 minutes later. I was here for about over 2 hours and no one came over after bringing me the bill. Not to mention, they charged me for Nachos Special Mix; however, I did not receive any shrimp on my order. Anytime I eat out I leave AT LEAST a $10 tip, but not this time as there was no one to leave a tip for, since no one thought enough to check on me. I am thoroughly disappointed and will NOT be returning. I will forever be a patron of the El Maguey on St. Charles Rock Road. Go there for phenomenal service and absolutely delicious food! read more

Pretty terrible tasting Mexican food. Got a large carne asada burrito and the meat were in huge pieces so you had to chew through it, underflavored yet tough. The rice and beans tasted old. I've been to this place twice now. The first time my server decided to keep part of my change (the coin part, which was close to a dollar) without asking me first. Strike one. The second time I went, they pressured me to order because they were closing soon (it was still an hour till their posted closing time). My friend was meeting me and running late. They closed the place 35 minutes early, preventing my friend and I from meeting up. Strike two. I also am fairly certain I have food poisoning from my taco salad, which tasted sort of off. Strike three. Other observations: -The service is not great. It feels like the place is run by teenagers, but not particularly responsible ones. -The food is "meh" at best. It's pretty expensive for the quality and quantity. -The margaritas are of variable quality, depending on who happens to pour the pre-mix into your glass. I do not recommend. At all. Drive to U-City to Mi Ranchito if you want good, standard tex-mex for a better price, or go to Mission Taco for roughly the same price for much, much better food. read more

Not my favorite Mexican restaurant near my house but a tasty alternative. Margarita was strong. I enjoyed the quesadilla Jalisco, shrimp quesadilla smothered in queso. Shrimp was cooked perfectly. Guacamole was good with a little kick. Fried rice was good too. They give you a ton of queso so I finished it with chips after my food was gone. My guy had the sampler platter with chile relleno and chicken chimichanga. Chile relleno was delicious. Chicken chimichanga was okay, but the smother of queso was wonderful. read more

Formerly El Toro, I decided to try this place based on liking the El Maguey on Chippewa. Food was extremely overpriced, the salsa was bland to the point that we had to dump Valentina in it, just to add some flavor. I had a cheese quesadilla that was minute and barely had any cheese! They do not have a happy hour on anything other than margaritas, which was exactly the same routine as El Toro, which was extremely disappointing. Place was empty and Judge Judy was blaring no music or ambiance at all. One of the staff members left, walked down to Little Caesars and came back with a pizza - I think that says it all. read more
