It's been a few weeks since I had any pocket cash to go out to eat... so I decided to pick a food source at random for a Saturday afternoon, and I'm SO GLAD I did... You know how they say one of the best things about Mexico is the food? I have to admit, I would honestly wouldn't know and just have to trust the stories I've heard, as I've never been lucky enough to go to Mexico.... But all my life I've heard stories about people who go and basically remind you.. NEVER hit a restaurant for _authentic_ Mexican food. You want to hit the street vendors. Well, St. Louis has a fantastic surprise.. Now you can do that right here in the city! Part of a three-restaurant set up, Amigo Sole is the "street vendor" restaurant that's not on the street. (And having met the owner of the full set-up, I'm REALLY hoping i get invited to the grand opening of Jekyll & Hyde) As it was middle of the day Saturday, I didn't ask for anything alcoholic (so i don't know if the reviewer that asked for alcoholic beverages and was told they didn't have any was just unlucky or if it was true.) But I'll take a Mexican Coke over American Coke any day of the week (NO, get your minds out of the gutter.. not that powdered one!). Anyway, I went simple for a quick stop, and went with the Chicken Bomb. at the recommendation of the cashier and he was quick to name this one off.. (and always remember cashiers, have a favorite READY, so thumbs up to the cashier on this one!) . And then to my amazement.. no more than 5 minutes later, HOT, tasty, cheesy, chicken quesadilla style BOMB-diggity! (Ironically this one is not listed on the website menu, only the instore menu? Come on Sole, online is everything today :) ) Absolutely delicious food.. and absolutely messy too, as it literally would fall apart in my hands.. (HEY, that's a good thing!) As for the decor.. 100% true, as Amigo Sole definitely has SOUL! (and lots of soles!). Again Amigo Sole isn't designed to be a 'great sit down' restaurant, it's designed to be street-vendor FUN!!!! and with what decoration they have, it pulls it off fantastically in my opinion. So just based on my meal, what the owner told me about the Amigo Sole, you're getting EXACTLY what you're promised a Mexican street vendor serving fantastic Mexican street vendor food, only with a roof over your head the entire time. During the meal, met again (Who i believe to be) the owner of the store and talked with him about Amigo Sole and how amazing it was to me... and he told me about the three-restaurant combination. (And I apologize sir, but I completely forgot your name when we talked!). even mentioning they share three kitchens when it gets busy (so I was kinda lucky as i think the rain scared everyone out for the day), but I'm still hoping for the Jeckyll & Hyde invitation! I love amigo sole, it's definitely a top pick for when I want tacos. The seating is very nice, especially when with friends and the food is just so good. I don't have photos of everything I've tried there but I really enjoyed the birria tacos, elote, and horchata they have there. The food also comes out pretty quick from my experience. I'd definitely recommend this spot if you want some warm tacos in a chill atmosphere. read more

Amigo Sole has a unique take on several traditional Mexican cuisine. Specifically, birria ramen. Don't see this very often in St. Louis but worth a try. They also have a hot Cheeto burrito and choose your own protein. We also ordered a elote (Corn) with Mexican cheese, cream and spices. Ramen noodles were delicious, however not much meat comes with it. Burrito was good but could've been a little bit bigger. Prices were reasonable and food was pretty good. I think this is one of those places that looks better than it actually was. It was a cute place with a photobooth, and service was fast, but overall, I wasn't super impressed. Got the Hot Cheeto burrito and the burrito especial with chicken tinga. I love hot cheetos, I love a gimmick as much as the next person. In fact, I am a believer that hot cheetos go good on everything. However, in this case, I think they tried to let the hot cheetos take the wheel and the rest of the dish lacked a little bit of flavor. Plus, the hot cheetos themselves were a little bit stale as well. the burrito especial wasn't anything special either. It was a pretty basic burrito with flavors really muted. I feel like like it desperately needed the sauce and but the sauce itself wasn't even super flavorful. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the food was! It's a cute little inconspicuous place on the loop is aw online and wanted to give it a try since there aren't too many birria places around. Both were so delicious. The consomme is so flavorful, the meat was tender, and the hot cheetos gave it a great crunch. This was a quaint little place, but the decor was cute, there is both indoor and outdoor seating, and even a little Photo Booth to take free pictures! The counter staff was very friendly, though pretty adamant we reviewed them on Google Reviews. I tried 2 things, the Birria Tacos and the Sunny Side Up Al Pastor Sandwich. Here are my ratings: Birria Tacos: 6.5/10 - Flavor wise, pretty good, and the consommé was wonderful, but I'm pretty picky about Birria since I have had such good ones in the past. Birria tacos should have more cheese in them, they should be crispy, and they should be folded over and grilled to perfection. The meat in these were good, but they were soft and were lacking in cheese. Al Pastor Sandwich: 8/10 - I loved the flavor of the al pastor, and the egg had an absolutely perfect runny yolk. The bun was plush and sweet, but I wish it had been toasted to add more textural contrast. There was, however, a good amount of slaw inside the sandwich to add crunch and freshness, which I loved. It also comes with a sort of spiced mango salsa which I'm not sure goes super well with the actual sandwich, but has a lot of merit on its own. Not a bad place, and definitely some fun options. Well, unfortunately, my car was out of commission today. So I ordered through yelp for a grubhub delivery. The food arrived ice cold.. and there's no fixing that for this meal. However, I don't hold it against the restaurant. Everything looked like it would have been amazing fresh. I did ask for no cilantro, however, & they put it on everything anyway. That was a bummer. Luckily, I could pick it off the elote (at least) so the flavor wasn't as intense there. But.. It made for a not very enjoyable meal, bc I could definitely still taste it. Ultimately... So googled local birria spots and this restaurant came back with some decent reviews so thought I'd pop in. The location is prime real estate in the loop so I was hopeful that the food would not disappoint. The restaurant has vibrant artwork throughout, wooden tables against the walls with small local eats vibe. The customer service was amazing, I ordered the Tacos Birria & Hibiscus. The food came quickly and then it disappointed just as fast. My tacos were soggy on one side and slightly cooked to crisp perfection on the other. The birria wasn't flavorful and was filled with red onions which was extremely overpowering. I was unable to finish the meal because the taste was less than desirable. To top it off the hibiscus was incredibly bitter. I ended up throwing away 2 tacos and a cup of hibiscus. Needless to say I wouldn't recommend this place and definitely won't be back. Bc read more

Amigo Sole was a breathe of fresh air on the Mexican Street food scene. They have classics like street tacos and burritos but also fresh takes on Mexican fare like the Sunny Side Al Pastor and Ramen Birria. Our food was fresh and delicious. I got the Tacos Birria x 3, the meat was great and you could taste the flavors. My husband got the Nachos Al Pastor, it was very filling - next time will ask for no lettuce and extra jalepenos. My son got the Sunny Side Al Pastor and he declared it the best Mexican dish he has ever had - which is saying a lot. My daughter for the Ramen Birria, which she enjoyed. We also opted to get the delicious Aguas Frescas - Mango was the fave but they also have Horchata and Hibiscus that were delicious as well. Got some carry out from amigo sole. I must admit, the menu is a bit intimidating as many of the items seem pretty unique/experimental. Nonetheless, I opted for the sunny side up al pastor sandwich. Certainly an interesting concept. I should mention I got in for carry out which may have affected things. But, the bun was very soggy and fell apart immediately. On top of that, the amount lettuce on the sandwich was crazy, I love romaine, but it was as if a salad was dropped on my sandwich. I must say, I enjoyed the al pastor. It was sweet and savory. Plus, there was also a good amount of that on there. The grilled pineapple was also a nice touch for the sandwich. I did end up having to basically eat the sandwich as a salad because it crumbled in my hands and the amount of lettuce. It also came with a side of what I think is pineapple salsa. In any case, it was very sour, almost like it was fermented. I was not a fan. I speculate I got a bad batch of the salsa. In any case, Amigo Sole was an average experience for me. Given I ordered something that seems somewhat unorthodox I was expecting them to have the entire sandwich perfected, but I would not say that is the case. This place is so good! My friend and I walked past to give it a try and we are so glad we stopped. We got the birria tacos, queso birria, chips and guac, hot Cheeto elote, with jaimaca and janitors to drink. When I tell you it was so good! We DEVOURED!!!!! I def recommend they haven't advertised much but it's so yummy. Not authentic but the Mexican street food is on par with the real deal. Everything was seasoned amazing and fairly priced for decent portions. The restaurant is smaller and perfect for dinner or lunch with a few friends. I cant wait to come back.
