My husband and I have been going to California Burger since they opened up on 16th street, often stopping there on the way home from A/V Club at Kan-Kan on Mondays. We haven't stopped by for burgers or patty melts recently, but we drove over there specifically to get ice cream a couple of weeks ago. Their fruity pebble shake is unreal. I have gotten it every time I've gone, except for the one time I strayed and ordered a regular chocolate shake (also good, but doesn't beat the fruity pebbles!). Flamin' Chicken & Shakes was another concept of theirs that they had on 38th street and we used to go there before they closed. They had the same dessert menu and I, of course, ordered the fruity pebbles shake each time we went. We haven't stopped in at Flamin' Chicken & Breakfast since they've opened, so I'm unsure if they have the same dessert menu (but maybe not since they are breakfast oriented). Unfortunately I don't have a lot to review. I went through the drive through and ordered a meal with a Dr. Pepper and was told it would be $12. I was shocked it was that expensive for fast food, but I heard it was great so I didn't mind too much. However, after I pulled up to the window and checked my food bag I noticed I only had a cheeseburger inside. I told the woman I had a meal and asked where my fries where. She told me they had only typed in a cheeseburger and Dr. Pepper. They didn't offer to give me some fries or even for me to pay more to get some. If you are going to venture here and give this place a shot then hopefully you phone or iPad is fully charged because you are going to need something to entertain you for about an hour while you wait in this drive through line. I waited about 50 minutes in the drive thru line. They have a broad menu that includes burgers, chicken, fish, and Philly cheesesteaks. The staff was friendly. I ordered the California Knockout Burger with fries and a banana split for good measure. My burger was pretty good. It has a unique taste that is distinct to California Burger and lots of flavor. The fries were ok. They had good seasoning, but some of the fries were a bit hard. I am glad that I got the banana split. It was awesome. It was huge. I could not eat it in one sitting. It traveled well. I had a 25 minute ride before I was able to dig in. It was delicious. There is no doubt that this restaurant has good food. However, you have to ask yourself if it is good enough to wait an hour for. In my opinion, it is not. Fast food is supposed to be fast, otherwise it is just food. So, will I be back. Right off the bat: You need to know that there is going to be a wait. They are only doing drive-thru right now, and the drive-thru line is long. The line snakes out of the parking lot and down the street, at least two blocks into the nearby residential neighborhood. Think about the longest line that you've waited in for food. Now triple that. If we're talking about numbers, I waited 3 hours and 25 minutes, from start to finish, on a Wednesday. I got there right when they opened, at 10 a.m. So you need to ask yourself: Are you prepared to wait three to four hours, in your car, for burgers and fries? Because if you're not, then you're not going to like your experience. But if you are willing to wait, then you will be rewarded with one of the best burgers in Indy. Honestly, I visited California Burger and got in this absurdly long line for one big reason: I'm from Southern California, and the burgers that I saw on California Burger's Instagram looked like they might taste like the burgers at In-N-Out. They also had a lot of items on their menu that looked like what I would see at Yellow Basket, another one of my favorite greasy SoCal fast-food chain restaurants, such as pastrami sandwiches and pastrami chili fries. If there was a chance that I could taste something like In-N-Out or Yellow Basket in Indianapolis, then I had to get in line. The verdict is: California Burger definitely has the best fast-food burger that I've tasted in Indiana. I ordered the Avocado Burger, and the bun was lightly toasted (it was soft, but just toasted and slightly crunchy around the edges), the beef was perfectly cooked and juicy, the cheese was melted completely, the lettuce, red onion, avocado and tomato was fresh and just enough, and the best part for me is that it wasn't super tall! I was able to actually take a bite of it and eat it in my car. It came wrapped in a burger diaper, like In-N-Out does their burgers, so you can definitely eat the burger while you're driving. I could sense a whisper of In-N-Out and Yellow Basket in my Avocado Burger. It was definitely the closest that I've had to anything tasting like something from one of those places since I've been in Indy. I got my husband the California Melt, which is apparently one of their most popular burgers. He loved it, too. I also got a large order of fries and onion rings, and the onion rings came with a side of ranch dressing. The fries were perfect: crinkle cut fries that are crispy when you bite into them, but nicely mealy as you chew. If I had to offer a suggestion, the onion rings could have been a little greasier. They tasted really good, though! I would get them again. If I could offer another suggestion, I feel like California Burger needs to pare down their menu quite a bit. I think this would help with the wait, too, because people wouldn't have so many options, and the kitchen could focus on churning out a thoughtfully curated menu. On the menu, there is everything from burgers to burritos to taquitos to fried shrimp to mozzarella sticks. Then there's an ice cream menu that includes shakes, Blizzard-type treats, sundaes, banana splits, different types of ice creams ... I could go on. Just look at my photo of the menu. Sometimes a lot of options are great, but in this case, because they cook everything to order, I think that their broad menu is contributing to their slow service. They just opened at the beginning of January 2021, so I'm hoping things like the slow service and extremely long wait gets worked out, because I really love California Burger's food and I want to go back! They have daily specials and Saturdays was avocado bacon burger. Comes with fries and a drink for $6.99 The burger is GOOD! It tastes fresh with great flavor bacon perfectly cooked, some yummy sauce too. No complaints! I wanted to try the pastrami but they are out. Fries were perfectly cooked and seasoned but nothing special. I ordered an Oreo twister Bc I felt like I wanted to try a little bit of everything, and was underwhelmed. The ice cream didn't have much flavor. I'll skip that next time. Overall I won't wait again, but will definitely come back when things calm down to try some new menu items. If the 10 car line at 10AM isn't an indication that this place is great then I don't know what is! Luckily my husband and I were first in line this morning, and I can attest that it's worth the wait! We ordered a single combo, single bacon combo, spicy chicken sandwich, and a Philly cheesesteak... and got a free chocolate ice cream because of the wait. The restaurant is currently drive thru only so I can't give it 4 or 5 stars with no customer service interaction. The menu was online so I was able to look ahead at what I wanted. Once you place your order it's only about 5 minute wait. I got the #4 with an Oreo shake. The fries were so crispy, well seasoned, and still warm when I got home. My total time from getting in line to leaving with my food was 1 hour. So was it worth my 1 hour I'll never get back? Yes! My order: Deal of the day - Avocado bacon burger meal with fries and up-charged to an Oreo milkshake California melt with fries and root beer Single bacon burger with fries and root beer Spicy chicken with fries and root beer All of the food was superb. The bun is toasted exactly how I like it and the burger is nice and juicy. The spicy chicken has great flavor. If you like frisco melts, the California melt is better. The veggies taste very fresh. The crinkle fries are seasoned, and I couldn't stop eating once I started. The Oreo milkshake was delicious, I want it again. Waiting for an hour gave us time to figure out what to get. They offer many options on their menu, and a lot of items look appetizing. Prices are reasonable for the amount and quality of the food. Only drive thru is available during COVID times. If you haven't already figured it out by now, I'm not exactly a hipster. I'm not the cool kid who goes to places first. I know. I know. I have way too many "Firsts" to say that with a completely straight face, but it is true that I seldom go out of my way to snag a first. By now, it's no secret that California Burger was all the rage when it opened up in the early Spring. It wasn't uncommon to have a two-hour wait at the drive-thru. Located right on West 16th Street, the poor neighbors of the residential area around California Burger had to be going nuts. I'm not the kind of person who will wait for two hours even with fine dining. Heck, I went to The Iron Skillet recently and the pace of the meal drove me a bit bonkers. There's no way I'm waiting a couple hours for a drive-thru meal. However, I'd had a decent success at work today and decided to reward myself with a meal. I initially stopped by over at The Amp, but nothing there really struck my fancy. So, I figured I'd drive by here and see what the line was like. The good news is that it was nowhere near two hours. I think I probably had 4-5 cars ahead of me in the drive-thru. The wait was maybe 10-15 minutes. That much I'm willing to do. In case it's not obvious, California Burger focuses on burgers with a few other sandwiches available including chicken options and a handful of others. They have some salads, but if you go to California Burger for a salad you might have issues. I think they had a couple dozen different burger options - most were suggested as a combo meal that included fries and a medium drink. As near as I could tell, they did not have iced tea (a definite negative for me). I ended up ordering the #2 - a double burger with fries and a medium mountain dew. The double burger came with the works - I usually special order but opted not to tonight. The employee working the drive-thru was super friendly. As near as I could tell, they are not yet offering dine-in - this surprised me a bit. The food? It's good. The burger? It's not "best of" Indy level, but it's a good burger and probably in the upper tier of fast food. It's a thick, juicy burger and vastly superior to most of the fast food chains. I do wish it had been a bit more done - I prefer medium well and this was clearly medium. However, it was still quite delicious and obviously fresh. Truthfully, I was stuffed when I was done. I usually try to upsize a meal, but I didn't here and I was glad I didn't. The fries were rather crinkle-cut, though they were larger. They were tasty. I'd say they were the definition of "good." The Mountain Dew was fine - again, I really prefer iced tea and the lack of an iced tea option alone would likely make me reconsider stopping here. I spent just under $10 for a satisfying meal. Would this be worth a 2 hour wait? Oh, heck no. Not a chance. I wouldn't even call it a destination burger. It's a solid option for burgers or chicken if you've got a hankering and are on the West side. I will note they also offer ice cream, sundaes, shakes, etc. I didn't order it - I was tempted as the prices were reasonable. But, given how full I am I'm glad I skipped it this time. Will I visit again? If I'm in the area, I'd certainly pick it over a nearby Burger King or McDonald's. However, if I'm in the mood for a sit down, satisfying meal I'd probably skip this place. They serve their drinks in styrofoam cups, as well. I realize this helps them stay cold, but I still find the lack of branding a bit weird. Ultimately, the lack of an iced tea would also be a factor in me returning (they do have fruit punch and I believe another similar drink). Ultimately, California Burger is solid fast food but I'm sure glad I only waited 10-15 minutes to snag my meal. I could probably go a 3.5, but the solid customer service won me over and I'm opting for the 4-star. read more

Now that the dust has settled on California Burger and you no longer have to wait upwards of an hour idling in line for the drive-thru, I'm happy to say that they're still serving up tasty burgers and appear to have improved the regular crinkly fries. Service at the speaker box was pleasant and sure to read everything back to me and confirm I ordered correctly. After ordering, the wait was about seven minutes which is totally acceptable for a great burger. Two single combos with cheese and two kids combos comes to about $35 bucks which is about $10 more expensive than MacDoodles and we'll worth the difference. read more

I was not sure what to expect with the wait time on a Saturday afternoon, but we thought we'd do a drive-by to see how it looked. There were about 20 cars in line, so we said, why not? We didnt see it in the sauce/slaw, so not sure where it was supposed to be. Nonetheless, these were super tasty and we were happy with them. The sides: We saw some mixed reviews about the fries, and thought we'd just go for something different. The Cheese Sticks are really the run-of-the-mill mozzarella sticks, just what you expect. The Mac & Cheese bites were triangular, more soft on the outside than crispy, and the inside was not dry - nice and cheesy. These sides came with 4 each, at $3.49. The floats: Don't they look pretty? The vanilla soft serve is good. I will say that the ratio was a bit off, there was too much ice-cream to soda. What else? They gave us 3 thin napkins. Wish they gave us a bit more. The burgers seem to be wrapped nicely so you don't need a napkin, but the California Melt is a bit harder to navigate without getting your hands a little saucy. They also forgot to include the ranch I asked for with my Mac & Cheese bites, but I wasn't missing it too terribly much (it was on the receipt but wasn't charged for it). I know this is hard to categorize as "fast food" with the wait times right now, but my 4 stars is rating it within that category. I've waited a long time to make this review . After trying to eat at this restaurant several times and failing because of the crazy line, I finally caught the line with less than 10 cars. I would say it took about 30 minutes to get through the line. We ordered the double cheeseburger meal and the California Melt. Whenever I see a restaurant has mozzarella sticks, I have absolutely no choice but to try them out. I also grabbed the strawberry milkshake. The cheeseburger was absolutely delicious. It was hot, the cheese was merry, and the toppings tasted fresh. The California Melt had a strong avocado flavor that I think overpowered the rest of the burger. It would have been nice to taste more of the sauce. The fries were really crispy. Personally, I like a less potato-ey fry. So I would probably opt for another side next time I go. The strawberry milkshake was great and the mozzarella sticks were what you would expect out of a mozzarella stick. Overall, the food was pretty good! I heard all the buzz about this place and finally decided to give it a shot. I lived in California for a bit and was curious if the place lived up to its "In-N-Out of Indy" status. At first, it was really confusing with the drive-through and parking situation - you can't walk into the restaurant AND you can't easily get from the small parking lot into the drive-through line either. I wish there were some signs that would block the parking lot entrance. The wait, like many posted here, was quite long. I spent about an hour on a Saturday. To me personally, the wait was not worth it and if I had to do it all over again, I would pass. However, I wouldn't wait an hour at In-N-Out burger either, although I like it a lot. In terms of the menu and food - the menu was quite large and there were many burgers to choose from + shakes and soda. My order was done fairly quickly and everything was correct. I can't say my burger was close to In-N-Out and those French fries definitely weren't. In my opinion, Five Guys is closer to In-N-Out if that's something you are looking for. And Five Guys would take 10 mins instead of 1 hour. All in all, my food tasted good, but I can't say I would rave about it. Price was ok. I noticed the staff at California Burger was very friendly and attentive. Definitely a big plus and I like supporting local businesses that are trying hard. To conclude - this is a nice spot to visit and food is tasty, but the wait time is just too long to keep coming here. If you're expecting the In-N-Out flavor, I'd say you wouldn't get it here. But food and shakes taste good nonetheless. read more
