I'd been wanting to try out Square Burger during my frequent jaunts to Putnam County to handle my father's estate. Square Burger is located in Danville right on the town square. So, it's right on the way to my parents' home and just off U.S. 36. Square Burger was established in December 2024 by Danville residents Trevor/Stephanie Bernhardt and Jordan/Stephanie Yant. Since Square Burger was established on the town square, it's amidst a square of mostly historic buildings. The buildings have been upgraded to varying degrees. This also means some are accessible and some are not. I'd noticed that Square Burger has a step into it. Unfortunately, it's a pronounced enough step that I can't quite safely jump it in a wheelchair. So, while I had tried surrounding restaurants like Mayberry Cafe, the Beehive, and Two Guys Pies along with Danville Dips (ice cream) and a coffee shop, Square Burger had eluded me. I'd reached out via social media to ask about access, but I didn't receive a reply. I had an appointment with a nearby lawyer secondary to the estate and happened to mention accessibility issues. I also mentioned my desire to try Square Burger. Ha. Imagine my surprise when this lawyer arranged it. First, I love seeing local businesses supporting one another. Bravo. Secondly, it was a nice touch from the lawyer and gave me a chance to finally try it out. I ordered a create-your-own burger and just a single. I added cheese, which is rare for me, and noted they had several cheese options. They have several specialty burgers. Kettle Chips typically come with the burgers, though you can upgrade to waffle fries for $1.50. You can also upgrade to a side salad for $2.50 or cheese curds for $3.50. I have heard good things about the cheese curds, thoughne person I knew had already recommended the upgrade as they felt the chips were a bit too crispy. So, I opted for the upgrade to waffle fries. I also ordered my usual unsweetened iced tea. I noticed with the create-your-own option there were other protein options (including pork, chicken). They have a handful of other sandwiches, some sides, and some starters. I noticed that there tea comes from "Tractor Beverage Co.," a company I've never heard of and checked out when I got home. I'm always up for discovering a new tea option. Square Burger also has some juice options. So, was it worth the wait? For the most part, yes. As the estate winds down, I'll likely be spending less time in Danville. However, I've really grown fond of Danville throughout this process. I definitely understand why small town restaurants don't go to the expense of a wheelchair ramp, though I will die believing that universal access is the way to go because it makes it available not just for wheelchairs but for the elderly and anyone who has difficulty with steps. Done well, it's only good. The burger? These are smash burgers. If you like that, you'll be happy. If you hate smash burgers, I doubt this one will change your mind. I do like them and thought this had nice flavor and not too much grease (a frequent complaint I have with smash burgers). The waffle fries? Delicious. I thought the serving size was larger than expected. To be honest, It had been recommended I get a double burger, however, this meal was definitely satisfying. A double, at least for me, would have been too much. I loved the iced tea, though thought it to be a tad smaller than expected. I'm knocking off one star - partly because of accessibility issues - which would be easily resolved here - and partly because of the lack of response on social media. Interestingly, the photo they often use for publicity makes it appear there's no step. Unfortunately, the step/entrance is to the right of the photo. I remember looking the first time and being surprised by the step. Overall, however, this meal actually does make me want to return. I could easily order online (which is an option) and have them bring it to my car. While I prefer dining in, parking around the town square is free with accessible parking allowing for five hours. This is a beautiful town square and there are easily places to sit down and enjoy a meal. You're also within a block of a town park. I'm very comfortable with four stars and hope to return. read more

Tried Square Burger tonight (Apologies forgot to take a pic). My dining partner and I each did a build your own burger. I had mine on their standard potato bun (they were out of pretzel) and she had hers on sour dough bread. Burgers were smash burger style and had a nice char. I had waffle fries which were done nicely and were crispy, while she had the house chips. The chips were good and very crispy (dining partner would have liked them to be a bit softer). We got a to go order as well of a Buffalo chicken sandwich for someone at home, who thought it was good. They said chicken was juicy and sandwich was not overly spicy. Parking is on the square but seemed adequate for the size of restaurant. Choice of fountain or some bottle drinks. Service was quick even though they were very busy. My family and I have visited Square Burger a few times. They have a wide range of burger/chicken choices to choose from, and everything we have tried has been excellent. I love how the food tastes fresh, not just freezer to fryer food like a lot of establishments. I recommend trying a burger with their bacon jam on it or ordering some cheese curds. Missing the mark. No lunch special for the people that work on the "square". Lots of county employees and attorneys in the area. I had a pulled pork sandwich and my husband had a burger. Not impressed. Pulled pork was what you get in a tub from any grocery store and the burger was thin and tasteless. With pork and beef farmers in the county why wouldn't you use their products? Your prices reflect something more than you're serving. Waffle fries are typical out of a bag and deep fried. The young staff did a good job taking orders and getting things out promptly. We stood up front for a bit but wasn't noticed and I saw a kiosk on the wall and told my husband, " guess we need to order here." I'm old and hate kiosks! I was trying with terrible results. I have tried this place two times. Both experiences, I left feeling very underwhelmed. The first time I came, I ordered the Warrior Burger. I was expecting it to be rich and cheesy (from the cheese curds that they place on top of the burger). Rather, the whole burger was dry and bland. Alright. "Well," I thought, "maybe it was just the burger I got last time. So, this second time around I tried the PB&J Burger. I was expecting an explosion of flavors. The burger has bacon jam, jalepeno strips, and peanut butter on it, for goodness sake. And, again, I was left wanting more flavor. It was bland. I could hardly taste the peanut butter. It was a total miss. The food could be immediately improved by 1) making each burger a double instead of a single, and 2) not skimping on the sauces. In an effort to not be completely negative, I will say that their waffle fries are worth the upgrade. They come out hot and crispy and delicious. I wanted to love Square Burger, with it being on the Square in downtown Danville and owned locally. But, I would rather try to make some bold burgers at home. read more

The sauce they use was all over the place. I hate it when the sauce is on top of the bun somehow. Burgers were alright but well done. Seemed like they cooked some of the taste out. The food was great and customer service was so very good in a time where that isn't always the case. Five people from our office went for lunch and all got different burgers. We all agreed that they were among the best we had ever had. Homemade kettle chips were good. Waffle fries were well seasoned. Cheese curds were homemade and very good. The guy brought us our food and thought we needed more fries so he brought us 2 extra trays. Thought someone's burger was too small so brought her another patty.
