Update: I've been back a million more times and still love this place. My new favorite has become the Baja Fish Burrito (or bowl style). The fish is flaky and tender, and perfectly fried. The mango salsa kicks it up a notch and the crack sauce makes it perfection. I was able to taste the Mango Margarita which is just as delish as classic marg. I also misspoke in my initial review. The ground beef taco is called the Gringo. It typically comes on a hard shell taco but I like to ask for their soft taco instead. Calexico still reigns supreme in my book. read more

I'll be the first to admit - I haven't patronized this specific Calexico location since a Yelp Elite event back in 2015. I'd been to their other locations since, and it's always a great decision. My go-to is always the Baja fried fish taco, which is one of my favorite tacos in all of NYC. Seriously, give it a shot. This time around, I also got a shrimp burrito, which was massive and also delicious. And the gringo (ancho/cumin ground beef), which was great with rice. Oh, here's a pro-tip - you can buy El Yucateco hot sauces from them via delivery services! I'm a big fan of the Chile Habanero, but I just had to try the Black label. Originally thought this was something else, and by the time we were inside and realized we were not in the right place, the plates that had come by kept us in our seats. The taco menu itself goes in a few different directions, so we were interested in what they decided to compose for our dining delight. We started with the fish taco, which was easily the best item had of the night. We had shared everything as we usually do on a first visit, but after my bite my wife almost didn't get this back. The crack sauce namesake may very well be the secret ingredient the way we were acting after trying it. Following that we had the fried chicken taco, a play on a chicken club that was surprisingly good as well. If I had to choose one though, I'd choose the fish taco twice the next time. The margaritas were pretty good, overly salted rims outside however. We forgot twice to ask for sugar rather than salt, as using salt heavily depends on the tequila used(should not be the go to for all). We finished with the shrimp fajita platter and the carne asada bowl. The shrimp fajita platter was underwhelming. The amount of flavor as per the previous dishes dropped dramatically, so we were a bit confused. Similar can be said of the steak bowl, as it was very basic until mixed together with crack sauce. The textures were satisfying, yet it hits like a chopped salad more than a bowl at a place where you expect Mexican food. Expected tortillas on the side that never happened, so I ordered chips instead. The sauce given with the chips was this disappointing mixture of salsa verde that should not be sweet, sour cream, super creamy guac and actually tasty salsa. I would remove all of this and serve them separately, two by request, whatever, just not all at once. Not bad Calexico, may try again soon. read more

I came here with my boo on a random Tuesday evening. They have outdoor seating, which was nice. It is 1st come 1st serve and people (including us) just stood around waiting to snatch a seat. We ordered a $5 texate (they were out of modelo, although it was advertised on the sign outside), and strawberry frozen margaritas for drinks, and the fried chicken taco, shrimp taco and Baja dish taco. Wow! The frozen margaritas were so bomb! All of the tacos we ordered were amazing and full of amazing flavors that worked well and complimented each other. Honestly this location disappointed me a little bit. I am a faithful Greepoint location Calexico regular, but going to the park slope location, just didn't have the same vibe. The food and everything was the same but the atmosphere and vibe wasn't the same as the greenpoint one. Was here last night w/ my friend . We started w/ the happy hour Margaritas, (2 for1) before 6 pm , she got a regular margarita, I got a Mango Margarita for $1 more up charge. Our bartender, she's was nice and we're greeted at the bar were we sat at . She ordered the Cali Bowl .. I ordered the surf and turf . (Shrimp and Steak fajitas) platter, mine come w/ onions, peppers, jalapeños jam , sour cream (4) soft shell flour tacos ; and rice and beans. The platter comes out hot so I had to wait like 5 minutes before making a fajitas taco. The steak is cut up already and the shrimp is on a stick .so I had to slice them off the stick itself. Not to eat the stick w/ the shrimp too. I was hungry so eat about everything I had . I did give her some of my plate to her. You can splint the plate it's really big for 2 people. Alone. The bar is pretty big for about 15 seats and plenty of tables . There give you chips for your next free drink. There are several locations. And i remember when they started in soho in a food cart .the line was like 10 deep . And there had a third person just taking orders to keep up w/ demand , that was probably earlier 2003-04 about. Best tacos and margaritas in Brooklyn!! My boyfriend and I stumbled across this place one day and have been going Atleast 1x a week ever since! The Baja Fish taco *nacho style* is a MUST TRY paired with some chili cilantro fries and a mango margarita and you're all set! Happy hour is until 7pm for 2 for 1 drinks. Which is an amazing deal considering drinks are $12 each during non happy hour hours. You can either use your chip for the second drink that day or save it and claim your drink in your next visit. I pass this place all the time walking down 5th Ave, and have really wanted to try , but I was a little hesitant since it's a chain. I ended up going for brunch on a Saturday around 3pm. I ordered a Cali burrito and wow. It was a great sized burrito, with the perfect amount of filling. It was a little messy with the black beans but so worth it. Both were good not great. I also had a bloodorange margarita that kinda sucked. I had it frozen and it just wasnt mixed well part of it was traditional margarita and the other part was sweet blood orange mix. I really want to give this place 4 stars simply for quality of service, but its really a 3.5 stars and because of all the competition in this genre of food I cant give 4 stars. Grabbed lunch from Calexico on Monday afternoon. A very hit or miss meal, but enough positives that I would return and probably dine-in. Quality: Craving a burrito I decided to order from Calexico. I started with the Guacamole And Chips, which were not my favorite. The guac was massive, but they really loaded up on lime, making every bite extremely citrusy. For my main I went with the Cali-Style Burrito. It comes with carne asada, fries, refried beans, guac, pico, cheese, and sour cream. I wish I got to it sooner, as it was lukewarm when I picked it up. I liked the refried beans in the burrito much more than I expected. However, I was not crazy about the steak, which seemed overcooked. The sauces created good flavor and it would be a burrito I ordered again, though I would likely pick a different protein. Quantity: The Guacamole is massive and easily enough for multiple people to enjoy. The Burrito was large, but only enough for one meal. Value: $13 for Guacamole And Chips. $14 for the Cali-Style Burrito. Ambiance: I visited the Calexico in the Park Slope area of Brooklyn. The space is pretty large, but has a weird setup because of the strange overlapping restaurants on the block. They had a small outdoor seating area, though it is hard to tell where it actually begins and ends. Inside they have a tiny waiting area, then the dining room and bar to the left. It has a little Mexican-style decor, but overall a pretty simple space. Crowd: Only a few people eating lunch on a weekday. It gets fairly crowded on the weekend and evenings. Service: Placed my order for pick-up online and they did not send a message when it was ready so the food likely sat around for awhile. This is more the responsibility of the third party, but it is something the restaurant should address with them. Parking: Limited street parking around the area. read more

Went here last night with my one of my girls and had an okay time. I LOVE margaritas, sadly I was unimpressed by this establishments margaritas. It was as if the margarita was made with tequila and grenadine with no strawberry flavor :( Moving forward, the food was VERY delicious. I had the Queso Dip as an appetizer and the Pollo Asado Bowl with was very tasty. This is a cute place to grab a bite to eat with friends. However the music was very off putting at times. On a Saturday night they were playing "Tired of Being Alone" by Al Green and another sad song that was very off-putting for it to be a Saturday night. My waiter was eh. Whenever we needed something we ended up having to get the attention of another server to get the basics like small plates for our appetizer and sour cream for my meal (which was supposed to come with it but didn't) Overall I'm giving this place 3 stars for the food and the quickness of service. We got the cheese quesadilla for my daughter and you get to chose fries or steamed broccoli on the side. I was going to get a cocktail and after asking our waitress, I decided to get a beer instead. Nope. I don't like inconvenience. First time ordering. I ordered a carne asada burrito, paid $4 extra for guac, $1 for sour cream & $1 for jalapeños. None of which came on my burrito that completely unraveled in its entirety after one bite. Also note: I asked that the driver CALL me and NOT buzz because I have a baby sleeping and he buzzed a million times AND came back and knocked on my door asking if I had already paid when I paid over the phone. But shoutout to Dominique for actually giving the driver CLEAR instructions (thanks girl) he just didn't follow them and woke up the baby. PISSED Anyway, I called. They said they could apply a credit or send out another burrito. I opted for another burrito and then called and just requested a full refund and to send the burrito back. I was told I could keep the burrito and still get the refund and new burrito. However, now, lunch time is over and appetite is ruined. I have been a lover of Calexico since I moved to Park Slope in June. However tonight I had a really unpleasant experience: my boyfriend went into anaphylactic shock after we were twice told that the oil they use did not contain soybean oil. After the second time, the hostess who had gotten the false info from a manager called us back very quickly to say they had gotten it wrong, but by that time he had already taken a bite of a taco and it was too late. I called the hostess back later to let her know that we were at the hospital, and she was super apologetic. However I am appalled that there is a manager there who does not understand the allergen risks in their food. Hoping I hear something from them tomorrow because this could have been a fatal mistake. Ordered a wet burrito (chicken) adding red enchilada sauce on top and my partner got fried chicken tacos. Omg 10/10 the flavour it's there. The quality and presentation is great no complaints. Pretty big serving so left with leftovers to save. The fried chicken tacos is something I've never ever tasted before. The sauce they used never had something like it and was so delicious. Didn't taste too oily or overloaded with batter which I liked bc some places go so heavy with batter and not left with the meat. Loved everything and the drinks. Happy hour from 4-7 looks good, though I was a bit too early for that. My burrito was fine, nothing spectacular. I remember the original Calexico on Union street being much full-filling. My gripe with my meal is that it lacked protein and for the price, honestly you get more at chipotle. I've been coming to Calexico since it opened in the Slope some years back. Must say I always have a really good dining experience.( I did dine at UES location and it was nice but Bklyn is da bomb!) I also love the decor: exposed brick, cool lighting and a really cool bar. What brings me back is the great vibe this place has: the bar is always shaking with interesting folks drinking the latest and greatest cocktail the talented bartenders are spinning( my fave Classic Margarita no salt) and the servers are always professional and accommodating. And of course the food is delicious: my go tos are the Baja Fish Tacos with a crack sauce that cant be beat, the nachos grande, chicken burrito, guac and chips. Tonight I tried the vegetarian enchiladas: the tomatillo sauce was smokin and the enchiladas had a great bite to them. The only disappointment and it's a small one: no dessert. Come on Calexico get me some fried ice cream! For now there is a patisserie not too far and The Chocolate Room is a small hike. This restaurant is great for family night out, date night and girls night out. It's a great place to kick back relax and eat some really good Mexican food. So I came back to visit and I was really happy with dinner and drinks. To our surprise we came in during happy hour. Score!! I ordered a speciality margarita with cucumber and thyme which was really tasty and the bf got a beer and a free round. For apps we ordered the carne fries and wings. The fries were a huge portion. They were delicious full of flavor a little spicy but not over whelming. The wings were tangy super crispy. I was super happy. For dinner we went for the tacos two carne asada with avocado crema, Baja fish fried tilapia with mango I opted for the crack sauce on the side, and chipolte pork which was spicy but good and rice and beans the tacos were really authentic and great. The spice level was def at a normal level this time. I'm glad I came back and gave this restaurant another try. Wait staff was pleasant and very helpful. I was feeling a little thrifty and wasn't sure if dining in would be as good as the food served in the carts. First off, the menu is certainly longer than the cart's. Elote is served and small salads come with the quesadillas-yay! Second, it it took longer to get our food here, the chefs here didn't stand a chance against the speed and agility of those in the cart. Lastly, the food was perfect. The quesadillas were a crispy golden brown, the Crack sauce was highly addictive as usual, and the fried fish in the taco was crispy and the sauce tangy and sweet. It was definitely worth coming in and paying a little extra for tip :) read more

What happened? First we decided to weather the snow storm to get some wings because we checked the menu on their site and wings were on there. When we got there we were really disappointed to find that was no longer the case. Casual shrug from the server when we expressed we had come based on their menu. Anyway we didn't want to bother with walking or finding parking again elsewhere so we ordered one mushroom and one steak quesadilla and the jalapeno poppers. Poppers were hot and good (only reason for the 2nd star) but the quesadillas were bad. I found barely any meat in the steak quesadilla - only tasteless onions. And while the mushroom quesadilla was filled with mushrooms it was bad. The crack sauce also wasnt great as i remembered it. The ambiance of Calexico was really nice. The restaurant wasn't packed; it was busier but there were empty tables and there was no wait time, which was also good. However, that's all this place can offer, and I now understand why there was no wait time. We sat at the bar for drinks and appetizers after the Brooklyn Pride Parade, and the bartender was rude and did not check on us once. We had to constantly wave him down for water and drink refills and to also place our food order. The traditional margaritas were just okay and overpriced - nothing special and they were on the smaller side. The Crispy Brussel sprouts were disgusting and not tasty - they tasted like they were soaked in vinegar and olive oil and then torched with a blow torch - they were burnt. There's a difference between being crispy and flat out burnt, but the chef must think burnt and crispy are the same. The chips and salsa were also just okay - salsa was good and spicy but the chips were stale. I will not be back. With all the amazing places to visit in Brooklyn for drinks and appetizers, I highly recommend you take your business elsewhere. read more

I came here for brunch on a Sunday. It's quite a popular place in Park Slope. The prices are a bit high but the portions are large. We ordered the breakfast quesadilla and the baja fish burrito. The breakfast quesadilla (bacon, egg, and cheese) came with home fries and the baja fish burrito came with chips. The food was fresh, tasty, and not greasy at all. Mexican food tends to be greasy. The only criticism is that the food was lukewarm, wished it was little hotter. They also have a variety of Mexican hot sauces on the tables - 6 bottles of varying spiciness. I really liked the chipotle hot sauce. The service was fast and attentive. They also allow separate checks which was pretty accommodating. Holy hot wings, Batman! Have y'all tried the chicken wings at Calexico yet? These lil' guys are unlike any wings I've had before. Yeah yeah I know there are a lot of places serving up 'hot wings' but these guys are covered in a "Spicy Chipotle Glaze" so uh yeah, the Calexico crew isn't foolin' around. These wings have some serious kick to them. To cool things down they serve the wings alongside of some blue cheese dressing and a salad of celery and apples. I'm not even a wing fan... but these were damn good. Once we got over the high heat of the wings it was time for dinner! Hubs ordered up tacos; choosing (1) of the Baja Fish (w/ spicy slaw, mango salsa, & crack sauce) and (2) Taliapia Fish Tacos - the special of the day. Grand total for all three tacos was around $13 and I was told they were among the best fish tacos he's ever had. I ordered my fav- the rolled quesadilla with chipotle pork. The pork usually comes with pickled red onions but I asked to hold the onion and add a little rice. Rice + cheese + pork + crack sauce. Ahhhhhh. Amazing quesadilla. And I love the fact that its rolled. What guy thought of that? Genius. For those who aren't feelin' a big bad burrito- try the rolled quesadilla. They are so friggin' good and will cost you an average of $8 (+/- depending on the meat you choose). I do wish that there was a bit more meat in the quesadilla... I had a few bites that were nothin' but tortilla. They do include a little side salad which is nice (and is tossed in a delicious vinaigrette) but this gal wants more meat, please!! Besides the delicious food this place has a few other things going for it: + a great atmosphere - very chill, felt very SoCal. + nice decor - warm lighting, lots of wood. + cool and clean restrooms - tiled in this beautiful blue, high contrast to the rest of the restaurant. + plenty of tables for groups of all sizes. + good sized bar + friendly & quick movin' staff - our waitress was so adorable.
