We stopped by on a rainy Saturday afternoon with the family (4 of us), and the restaurant was surprisingly empty. The first thing we noticed was how freezing it was inside. We asked if the AC could be turned up, but were told they'd have to shut it off completely. My husband works in HVAC, so we knew that wasn't really the case, but we let it go. We started with a pitcher of margaritas, which was definitely the highlight of the meal. They came in the cutest cups, were well made, and had a nice kick to them. I ordered the chicken nachos because I almost always judge a Mexican restaurant by its nachos. The chips tasted fresh and were perfectly crisp, and I appreciated that they used white meat chicken. Unfortunately, the overall dish just lacked flavor, so I ended up leaving a good portion behind. My older daughter ordered a steak burrito and simply requested no onions or peppers. Somewhere along the way there was a misunderstanding because she was served what was basically steak and cheese, with the rice and beans on the side instead of inside the burrito. My younger daughter enjoyed her chicken nuggets and fries, and my husband ordered the fajitas, which he seemed to like. Overall, the experience was just okay. There wasn't anything that made us eager to return. The margaritas were great, but the food and overall experience didn't leave a lasting impression. Stopped in at Mezcal's this past Sunday for lunch after an appointment in the area. I immediately liked the kitschy, bright decor and I was thrilled to know that I was in time for Happy Hour. My blood orange flavored, frozen margarita was tasty with a fair amount of buzz. The glass was cute, with a stem made to resemble a cactus. My appetizer of stuffed jalapeño peppers with shrimp, sour cream and cheese was really filling and served piping hot but it wasn't very flavorful. The cheese was super gooey which I can appreciate but the cook's at Mezcal's use cheese like it's a main ingredient. Overkill. I took my taco salad with chicken main course, to go. I wish I had inquired about the ingredients because they were not to my liking. I was hopeful for dark lettuce, sliced chicken and maybe jalapeños, topped with cheese and/or guac. Instead, I was served a lightly flaky bowl (the best part) with shredded chicken, bland black beans, pale iceberg lettuce, dull looking sliced tomatoes, peppers and onions. It was topped with sour cream and a very unexciting guac, I was truly dissatisfied. If I did return to Mezcal's it would be for a quick Happy Hour drink and the complimentary nachos and salsa which they forgot to mention that they offer. read more

I am sorry to say that this is probably the worst burrito I ever had. The very rustic chopping of the onion and peppers was terrible but more importantly, the pork kinda tasted like canned tuna. I expected something better tasting and authentic for $23! Salsa wasn't even good. Oh and probably the worst rice I ever had with flavorless soupy refried beans. Satisfactory (Tex) Mexican restaurant that has been a staple on Court Street for quite some time. Arriving around 10:30 pm, I was here recently for a quick bite/snack (not a full meal although I've had dinner in the past at Mezcal's). Cute,colorful interior with above average prices considering the authenticity of the food.Their menu included many categories such as starters, specials, tacos, salads, enchiladas/quesadilla and cocktails. Average price for an entree seemed to be around $17. Service was attentive the evening I visited. On this given late night we ordered: *Strawberry margarita--I didn't try it but it looked good *Guac with chips *La Catrina quesadilla The drink was frozen, fruity and from what I was told---satisfying. As far as the quac with chips--it was pretty good. Not a huge bowl but most restaurants serve a similar sized portion. We were told that the chips were made in house and they were actually good. The La Catrina quesadilla was vegetarian with jalapeno peppers, cheese, onions and sauteed spinach. Cut into 4 pieces, it was sufficient and tasty. I really liked it. Overall, Mezcal's is an old reliable pit stop that satisfies hunger and where food seems fresh and solid. It wouldn't be my first choice for Mexican, but it met my expectations every time I visited. I been here many many times pre pandemic and post. If there is something unique about this place is that is a small cozy environment with outdoor patio and the staff for the most part is still the same throughout the years. They don't push, follow up to make sure everything is good and the price is very reasonable, enough to give them a 25% or more on tips. I have tried from meat to seafood and the flavor is just unique authentic Mexican style (not Tex Mex). I love supporting local business that really put their effort on having a consistent great customer experience and Mezcal have failed nailed it in keeping the standards high through their food and service to the clients. I highly encourage everybody to visit this place and try any plate, you will not regret! read more

Went here for a quick bite to eat and saw they had happy hour. The happy hour Margaritas are delicious and strong. I had 2 frozen passion fruit, and one frozen guava marg! Delicious! The food: Nothing to write home about. I had the chalupas appetizer, they were very messy and the tortillas were soggy. It was just a wet plate of food. I couldn't finish it, it began to be unappetizing after a while. So I ordered the taquitos appetizer and that was a bit better but the flavor was lacking. I love Mexican food and this place is one of my favorites in Brooklyn. The space is welcoming and spacious (there is even an outside yard seating area) the lighting is perfect and it feels comfortable. Every time I come here, the service is great. The food is DELICIOUS! I hate to say it, and I'm not particularly a foodie or critical, but this was some of the blandest Mexican food I've ever had. I got the arroz con camerones (shrimp + rice) and it was awful. Tasted like the shrimp had been frozen for years, quickly thawed and stripped of all its flavor. It was chewy and only edible because I was so hungry. The rice/veggie also had no flavor, tasted like a frozen meal heated up in the microwave. I'm only giving it 3 stars because the service was great, environment was nice and drinks were good. Ugh based on the one drink I had, the high prices, and the service I don't think I will be coming back here. I ordered the vampire margarita. The guy asked me if I wanted it spicy. Of course I do that is why I ordered it. I'm expecting to be spicy and it was. Just not in a good way at all. If you are going to melt my throat I wanna get drunk while it happens. Those were the saddest tacos of all time. It's almost like the cook didn't care whatsoever. Perhaps he or she is a nihilist. Perhaps the entire kitchen is in black and white and is French with subtitles. Perhaps there is an existential crisis and that is somehow translating into the food. The tacos were upside-down on the plate, with strips of unseasoned grey steak with what appeared to be STEAMED cilantro. The chef put some sort of orange sauce all over the ends of the tacos. For some unknown reason. Perhaps it was art. There was also no music. Dig if you will, a picture: a silent room with party decorations. You are given a plate of upsidedown tacos covered in sauce. Inside is unseasoned meat and boiled garnish. You pay a man $18, but you are unsure why. Now is the time in Sprockets where we dance. Perhaps this is some next level performance art designed around the concept of reality not meeting your expectations. Perhaps the chef is actually Marina Abramovic and this is all a magnificent gesture towards enjoying our precious moments here on earth, perhaps at another restaurant down the street. read more

The best mole I've ever had. Mole is such a difficult traditional sauce to master that many restaurants don't even bother having it on the menu. I looked up their menu online and prices were decent so I went in. Everything is $6+ more actually though. When I asked about that they just said their menu was outdated. Then their happy hour beer was $6 for cheap Mexican beer. Hmmm. The waitress came up to me over ten times to take my order, all in less than 5 minutes of my being there. When I had a question she would not answer it and said she'd come back when I was ready to order. It was insane!! The food was horrible. I got only bean and cheese items and beans were like soup. Not good. Someone at a table next to me told them the chicken was horrible so they reordered and went with beans as well. I had one cheap beer and the cheapest item on the menu and walked out paying $22 and change before tip. As suspected about an hour later my stomach was killing me. Bad place! Rushed service! There used to be a Mezcal's on Atlantic Avenue near Clinton Street but that closed a few months ago. It's a pity...the food wasn't great or anything but sometimes you just enjoy the atmosphere of a quieter place. I heard the non-vegetarian options are okay...they have a huge menu. Anyway, they have lots of vegetarian choices but I'm going to give you the best one: Vegetarian Fajitas. I believe they call it Chimbombo. They give a generous rainbow of veggies--mushrooms, broccoli, onions, cauliflower, even baby corn--brought sizzling to your table, with bubbly cheese dancing happily on top. It's a lot of food but you can do it and you can probably do it with a pitcher of margaritas too. read more

I have always struggled to find like real texmex food anywhere near nyc. Usually it's a burrito place when you look up texmex on the good ol yelp. Most of them are just Mexican joints, which is totally fine. But Mexican and Tex mex are different. One is a gringo version of the other, and me being the Florida guy I am likes the gringo version better. This one kinda hits both sweet spots. Anyways, they have happy hour every day! Oh you can get these margaritas I speak of and be happy about it for several hours. It takes about .25 of an hour to feel pretty happy about it. If you come during an off time and have a server make your drinks they are A LOT stronger than what the bartender makes. I found that out today. The only reason we tried this nightmare was because Slowteria (an excellent Mexican restaurant one block away) was closed for a holiday break and walking farther wasn't an option. Service was 'begrudging', but as we provided our own entertainment we hardly gave it a thought. But really, the food is awful. My wife couldn't bring herself to finish her Beef Tacos, and I wasn't about to suggest taking it to go. I was so hungry I finished my Taco Plaza (notice: no fish, as we wanted to play it safe), but four hours later I was hovering over the toilet. Listen, please avoid this place for your own good. I've also like the fact that they give us fresh baked nacho chips. *Mmmm* I order the fish tacos hard shell, and we've also order the chicken tacos, and everything was nomnomnom. Can't forget the Pico-De-Gallo, yum, nice and fresh. It is a bit pricey but there is enough food for a meal and a snack (or small meal); definitely share friendly... BEWARE! Just ordered delivery and can't say one good thing about this place. All my friends are now worried about getting sick from the greasy slop we ended up with, because of the lack of integrity of the workers. I should have canceled my order due to the rude person answering the phone. Why would the guy ask me what kind of meat I want in the taco and combo platter if he was going to give me something entirely different ( no taco or convo platter). A MESSAGE TO MANAGEMENT, PLEASE READ THIS: You are squandering a gold mine. You are insane. You are sitting next to one of the busiest and most popular restaurants in Brooklyn where frustrated, hungry people are told they must wait two hours for a table. IF YOU WERE NOT THE WORST RESTAURANT IN EXISTENCE, THEY WOULD ALL COME TO YOU. You could make a fortune if you cared even a little bit. Here's a small, tiny, starter list of things you need to do to scoop up the money you are currently throwing out the window: 1. Redecorate your dining room. No more sombreros and beer signs. Act like you've been to a nice restaurant and do that. Better yet, actually go to one and copy them. You look like your food sucks (it does, I will get there). 2. Totally revamp your menu. You cannot make 230 different dishes well. Instead, you offer 230 absolutely terrible dishes. Truthfully, you offer five dishes with a bunch of different names. I ordered chicken tacos, my husband order pork quesadillas, my friend ordered beef enchiladas moles. We all got THE EXACT SAME DISH with a different sauce poured on top of it. You are insulting the intelligence of Carroll Gardens diners if you think we don't notice what you're doing. 3. I can't make this point strenuously enough. SEASON YOUR FOOD. It's a Mexican restaurant for gosh sake. My "chicken tacos" consisted of bland, flavorless chicken wrapped in a flour tortilla and drizzled with red enchilada sauce (why?). The rice is utterly without flavor, and the refried bans are obviously straight out of a can without even a dash of salt. Where is the cilantro? The lime? The heat of Mexican peppers? The creamy freshness of queso fresco? All of Mexico weeps that you call this Mexican food. Every reviewer that calls this place "authentic" has never been to Mexico, or any place other than Chili's. Disregard them, listen to me. 4. Fire all of your servers. I don't care if they are your brother's best friend or your sister's ex husband. You need servers who can sell your food (ok not YOUR food, the food you are going to serve when you stop doing everything you are currently doing). You need servers who care at all. I was there with a party of 3 at 6:30 pm on a Monday night. We were the only ones there. And yet... the server brought my husband the wrong beer, never brought me more salsa as requested (it was the only edible thing I was served), and generally seemed bothered by our presence. When your food and decor suck, you need to hire some charm if you have any chance of making it in the restaurant world. I AM BEGGING YOU as a neighbor and lover of Mexican food to save yourself. Slowteria (right down the street) serves incredible, authentic Mexican food. But their menu is irritatingly small and sometimes you just want a good burrito for $10 instead of fancy-pants Mexican for $25. You still have a place on this street, but -- and I cannot stress this enough -- YOU HAVE TO STOP SUCKING. A side note to any potential customers reading this: please don't go here. Save yourself the disappointment, and the time it took me to write this review. But most importantly, help me send a message on behalf of Carroll Gardens that we are not morons. We will not be fed canned beans on soggy tortillas for $15. We do not think sangria is made from canned fruit juice syrup. All my friends know I like to focus on the positive. So here is the positive: these are nice folks running this restaurant and the food is ok. There aren't very many sit-down mid-range restaurants in this area. Margaritas are tough to swallow- all sour mix and tequila. Yuck. Nachos supreme, however, are very good. I say B- overall. Don't you hate it when you go to a restaurant with low expectations and you're *still* underwhelmed? Actually, I wish I was just underwhelmed with Mezcal's. I was affirmatively pissed off about the bland, tasteless -- pointless, really -- so-called "food" they serve at this slophouse. The earlier reviewer who said Mezcal's served "overpriced shitty Mexican food" was all too kind to this restaurant. The family and I were having a nice stroll down Court street when we decided we'd like something spicy for dinner. We had not had Mexican for a while. We happened on Mezcal's, which we'd seen in several locations around Brooklyn, but never tried. We figured that, since it was a chain, and aimed at Americans rather than Mexicans, it probably wasn't that great, but at least it would be tasty. After all, they seemed to be doing well. How bad could it be? Yes, it was that bad. My wife had chicken tacos. Bland, bland, bland, bland, bland. Just disgusting. I had the mole poblano. Usually this dish has a "not quite sure if I like this unusual flavor but just can't stop eating it and often start craving it out of the blue" kind of flavor. Here, it was bland, boring, dull, pointless and just a waste of effort to chew: a flattened chicken breast with no flavor at all, with a greasy, watery, bland, and flavorless "mole sauce" slathered all over it. The most exciting part of this dish was trying to prevent my 2 year-old daughter from accidentally dropping her Elmo doll into the enormous plate of watery brown liquid that Mezcal's represents on the menu to be "mole sauce." On top of it all, Mezcal's is expensive for Mexican food, at least in Brooklyn. All in all, I was just offended by the fact that I was put to the effort of having to consume and digest that "food." The place was packed, which I could not figure out at first. Then I drank my margarita. This was actually pretty good and packed an enormous punch. The food here doesn't matter at all. If you want to get sloshed on margaritas, and you just need some swill to sop up the alcohol, then Mezcal's is the place for you! It shouldn't be but the bill is always ridiculous even if you've had a good time in the theme-park version of Mexico. The food is average to good depending on the day but nothing exceptional.
