This place has its own special kind of food, they have a good lunch special for under $12 , w/ a drink . The service is a bit slow at times especially when there not buzy ! Unless there during togo orders, i definitely would order right away! They have a backyard here but small , definitely not a place for groups but you can sit at tables together' the thing I don't like is a got my BILL and I was hit w/ a service fee , on TOP of a credit card charge, when in fact I paid on CASH and also added gratuity on my bill on top of tax also .. BECARFUL when you get the bill , THE don't tell you ALL this till you get the check . I would use CASH here or expect hidden charges on your credit card statement next time! read more

Drinks here are A1! Food isn't the best but we also haven't tried everything. Not a huge fan of the Elote. Tacos were good, I love the hard shell option. The spicy soup is always really good too. Their hot coco and lemonade also taste amazing. What to know? You walk in, ask to be seated, take a look at their gigantic and extremely expansive menu, order, and either pay up front at their registers or ask the check be brought to you. Bring your appetite!  The food is irresistible and the portions are generous!  I first came here when I was a student at Pratt about 12 years ago and fell in love. It's one of those classic establishments that I'm so grateful is still here and doing well!  Authentic mexican is hard to find in NYC.  They have a huge menu with everything you could ever want including fresh juice and smoothies. Today I had the mole chilaquilles loaded with beef, the sopa azteca, a huge orange juice, handmade chicken tacos, and flan for dessert. Everything was super tasty, warm, and pleasing to the eyes.  The staff was extra nice and the food came out quick. They give you free homemade chips and salsa too.  I sat in the outdoor, heated seating area in front.  They have a nice open air patio too and the inside is cute. I'm actually shocked that this place doesn't have five stars, but reading through some of the reviews it's clear that many who gave lower marks just don't know real mexican food. Someone gave one star because a quesadilla had "crispy edges" and "too much cheese"!?  Literally WTF? You clearly don't know what an authentic quesadilla is. The generous amounts of meat and cheese, and the perfectly crispy and soft cooked tortillas are what I love about this place. And the prices are very reasonable, and certainly just as good as other Mexican restaurants in Brooklyn. They have affordable lunch specials too. You can also blame raising rent and condos, not your local restaurant if you don't like nyc pricing.  So please eat here and leave them a good review too because they deserve it :) read more

Castro's is still amazing, and I hope you check it out. Since moving to the neighborhood 22 1/2 years ago, they have always been great. I want them to always be a staple of my neighborhood, as the hard shell ground beef tacos are the best I've had, even when we have a bunch of fancy overpriced options popping up everyday. I had been putting off ordering from them, as they're so many options. but glad I did! Still the real deal restaurant we need and I hope you give them a shot! CHEAP + LARGE PORTIONS The decor is whatever, dated mexican style eater but the food is good and the portions are big. They have a large menu so whatever your looking for they probably have it in several styles. I don't recommend the fruit smoothies or juices, mine tasted like freezer burn which makes me question how they store their foods. Theres seating in front, out back and in a back yard. I just visited Castro's with my students/players from my Flag football team. And the waitress served my student, who is 15 years old a Henny Colada without asking for ID. Or letting me know that one of them had ordered an alcoholic beverage. None of my students look like they're 21. Let alone 18. And when I expressed this to the manager. I'm giving this place 1 star. Ordered a quesadilla, a barbacoa taco and tamales. I had to throw away the taco because it smelt bad and tasted very gamey - I have no idea what kind of beef was in it. The quesadilla was a half-cooked, hard at the edges tortilla overstuffed with lettuce, sour cream and some chicken - no beans and no cheese (I had to add some and reheat it), and it certainly wasn't pressed like a quesadilla should be (just compare the photos in Yelp with the one I put up). Order a "regular nachos" $10 wow only 5 pieces of nacho a scoop of dry beans a slap of cheese. Sorry but other Mexican restaurant I've been to Regular Nachos consists of Guacamole Pico de Gallo and sour cream I don't know what you call those nachos but it was terrible. Second I order a "Azteca soup" $9 I don't know what the heck was that at Castro 4 pieces of cheese square Tangy taste no flavor what's so ever. One of the best places for lunch in the area. Menu's big, but focus on the tiny lunch specials box right on the cover. Its a big plate of rice, beans, salad and a slow-cooked meat with flavors that make you smile with every bite. I love Castro's. For tacos, I definitely prefer it to the other Mexican restaurant a block down. I didn't really like the bistec, a little dry, but I always get tinga de pollo for my protein and it's amazing, very saucy and flavorful. Their crispy taco shells are great and taste like they are fried in-house, and the portions of meat on the soft tacos is generous. It's so nice to get out of Manhattan and venture out to other borough. My friend bought a brown stone house in Fort Greene near Pratt Institute and I went to visit him. The restaurant is located in front of Pratt Institute. I saw many students walking on the street and in side the restaurant. My friend ordered for me. My knowledge of Mexican foods is mostly limited to my neighbourhood place, Mexicana Mama, on Hudson St. I often get delivered from them. I don't really know much about Mexican food. Nachos & Salsa - this came first. Salsa was watery, bland and no heat at all. I asked for red and green house hot sauces that I saw (see the photo) but they were also watery and almost no heat. Red had a touch of smokey flavor that was a nice. Nachos was kind of thick and hard. I didn't care for. Guacamole - unmemorable. Enchiladas - 3 soft corn tortilla chicken covered with cheese, lettuce, tomato and drizzled with sour cream. It was huge but that was it! The fried beans were good but I've got MSG attack later unfortunately (I am not against using MSG but when it gets too much into my system, I get a heartburn. I can taste what it came from. I know this is disgusting..sorry..but true). The shredded chicken inside of tortilla were tasty. Over all favor and taste were bland. I added red and green hot sauces and salsa with squeezing fresh lime on top but didn't help so I added the hot sauce bottle on the table but still didn't satisfy my taste. Tamarindo (Tamarind juice) - it was interesting and was my first time. My friend had Burrito of some kind. The size was cute and shaped almost square (check photo). Tamales - my friend ordered one with chicken and other with hot peppers with cheese. He seemed to enjoyed them. We were so busy talking that I forgot ask him. Later, I looked their menu and found something interesting dishes. Breakfast looked interesting from soup to burrito and Mexican sandwiches. Rojas con Crema, chili strips in cream from side orders. Sopa de Mariscos, seafood soup and Sopa Azteca. If I ever come back, I will order myself. read more

I am an authority on Mexican food, even though the only time I've been to Mexico was when I accidentally got in the border crossing line in El Paso, thinking it was road construction. Having drugs in the car, I didn't want to do anything suspicious and drive wildly out of line... and no one smuggles drugs INTO Mexico... at least I don't think so... I'm no authority. I've learned a lot about Mexican food from watching that Rick Bayless's show, religiously, "One Day at a Time" or something. Anyone who has ever been addicted to tacos can relate. Everyone knows that tostadas were invented to help you kick the taco habit. You can tell that I'm, anyway, an authority because I eat a taco with one hand while making an orgasm face and waving the other hand wildly in the air like a bull rider. Delicious vegetarian tacos with beans and rice, more beans and rice, and more beans and rice. I love places like this that seem to want to be everything at once, a diner, a taco stand, a bar, a sports bar, a fine yuppie dining establishment, an escape from New York, a secret hideout. Why not, there is usually more than one person involved, rather than a monolithic corporation, and that spells authenticity. I nursed my horchata (which I like to pronounce "Whore-chata" to brighten up my server's day) and waited for my check for about an hour, which they never brought me, which was my final tip-off to the Castro's authenticity. read more
