Either we were too cold, or it just didn't have enough Libre to do the job. :P Seriously - this place makes a decent Chileaquiles for what I was expecting to get in Brooklyn! After reading through the reviews I chose 1/2 Roasted Chicken Lunch Special, and it was so wonderful, it is now my favorite dish. And also, the service was amazing and the staff was very welcoming. Horrible service. I walked in for lunch today. I was ignored by the waitress for several moments before another staff member asked her to take my order. Once she did acknowledge me, she never offered me a menu, and proceeded to charge me before I received my meal (Btw, I ate AT the restaurant). As I sat down to eat, I realized that out of all the other patrons, I was the only person who was asked to pay before eating. I was also the only person not offered a menu. I was also the only person of color in the establishment. Coincidence? I don't think so. During my meal, the waitress walked by my table several times but never checked on me once. Castro's is a good place for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. With an outdoor patio - it makes for a sweet happy hour spot also. Lunch special platters are filling. If you told me before I ordered "hey, it'll take 3 hours for the food to arrive, but they'll be nice about it," I would have never placed the order. Castro's is my go-to restaurant in this neighborhood. From their huevos rancheros to their tacos...this place is consistently delicious and always hits the spot. I am Latina and grew up eating this food, and this place reminds me of mami's cooking. And for all those posting critiques because they're from Southern California: being from Los Angeles does not make you an expert on Mexican food. I haven't been to castros in YEARS but I definitely had good memories of the food eaten here before. However, last night I was in the area at a relative house and we decided to order delivery. I would say wait time was not bad or maybe it took so long I just forgot about it. ‍ The order included tacos, a platter of Bistec and sides, quesadilla and tostada. I ordered 1 taco of chorizo and 1 Bistec. Complete disappointment. I had been craving tacos for a few days now and it did not do justice. Chorizo looked like ground beef, there wasn't an spice to it. And the Bistec taco was alright, looked like pure laziness just huge pieces thrown in it. Tortillas were soggy and cold, practically falling apart in between bites. Quesadilla was American. Wack. Not Mexican authentic. My aunt had gotten two tacos of tongue I believe and even she was upset. Not even with hunger were the tacos good. The platters looked decent, pork chop and Bistec with rice/beans and lettuce tomato etc. The green salsa was watery and flavorless. I was told the red salsa was garlicky but at least had a good kick. I hope to give them another chance in the future. Have been there a few times. I have enjoyed my food each time. I actually am a burrito convert because of them. Each time, my kids and I are in the area, we tend to stop in. However, this past weekend, they really disappointed me and I don't think I will be going back. We are in the middle of this pandemic and times are hard for everyone. I ordered 3 of the $10.50 steak burritos. When I was handed my check it was almost $50. I asked why after noticing I had been charged $13 for each of the burritos. The cashier said that they were in the middle of printing new menus, but they had the new prices in their POS system. Seriously? I have been going to Castros for eight years and never had an issue with their service or food. Today I stopped in to pick up dinner and they started using flimsy paper bags. As soon as I got outside the restaurant, the bag ripped. My food spilled and I brought the ripped bag back to the restaurant. They said that they could not do anything for me and were not responsible for the bags. As a person who worked in a customer service industry for years, I found this response unacceptable. Was craving authentic Mexican food so I discovered this place. Ordered over the phone 03/17/2020 at 6:03 pm. My order was as follows: 1 chicken burrito, 1 steak burrito, 1 chicken quesadilla, 1 steak quesadilla, a platter with roast pork, rice and red beans Total: $65 After an hour passed I called the restaurant to see where the food was. The lady who answered the phone stated that the delivery guy had already left and was en route The delivery guy contacted me at 7:38 I gave him $80 he said he has no change they're not supposed to have wads of cash on them understandable but they're supposed to have at least $20 in change especially when my order was $65. No way was he getting a $15 tip from me so i called the restaurant and the lady told me i can use a credit card. Irritated at this point, I tell her if i wanted to do that i would've done that from the beginning. She tells me to send the driver to the store. I told her "how about you contact him and 'send him' to the store being that he works for you. She says "oh yeah mami ok" I go in the hall to the delivery guy and he says he'll be back in 5 minutes he's going down the street to the store to get change 45 minutes later i contact the restaurant and she says "you got you change" i tell her i did not receive my change and if i did i sure as hell wouldn't be calling She placed me on hold and came back and said "oh yeah the delivery guy came here to get change he's coming to you house" why would he go all the way back to the restaurant which is 5 blocks away give or take to get change instead of going down the street to a regular store and getting change? A great, authentic, fair priced Mexican meal. You can fill your stomach up without emptying your wallet. Additionally there's probably 200 menu options and you can come here basically all year and still be trying something new. The location is pretty cute and the music keeps me entertained. You can also get your alcohol fix here. A majority of the cooking can be viewed from your seating area which I think is a nice experience. Sit down meals are served with chips and salsa. If I could give anything LOWER than 1 star, I would. I've never been more outraged at an establishment in my entire life. Let me start off by saying, my boyfriend and I were looking for a decent place to eat. We knew Castros wasn't the best (since we had eaten here once before) but it also wasn't the worst and we were starving. Started off with chips and salsa. The salsa was watered down and lacked any real flavor. The guacamole however, was not half bad I had also ordered fresh squeezed orange juice and it was fantastic! ...But that's as good as it's going to get. I decided to play it safe, and ordered a chicken quesadilla.(as did my boyfriend) What was delivered to us, was inedible. I decided to try it regardless and was beyond disgusted. It tasted nothing like chicken and certainly wasn't "fresh". My boyfriend took a nibble out of his, and was immediately disgusted as well. I feel like it's also important to include, we are NOT the type of people to complain unless the food really is downright awful. When we addressed the situation with the waitress and manager, neither was accommodating nor apologetic. They proceeded to charge us FULL PRICE for BOTH entrees that ended up in the garbage. Management was a nightmare, completely avoiding any blame on their behalf. Even going so far as blaming us, for not liking the food we had ordered. Not only was I extremely upset with the way they dealt with this situation, but I ended up getting sick. I had pains in my stomach the entire night. Look at their open-to-the-public kitchen space. The carnitas looked like they were out there for hours or more. The flan looked old old in plastic containers, would anyone choose to order it if they saw it sitting there? Taco shells and sandwich rolls looked sad. Most of the food was blatantly open to the air, eh who cares right? I liked the service. The ambiance was great, but that word makes me cringe. How could I choose a place based on ambiance? kill myself. The beef on the tacos were good and that cheese that topped them looked bright and fresh. Its the best, most bang for the buck, tasty delivery food me and my man will order from the area. The service at the joint is prompt and amicable. My guy loves their fish tacos. I love their hard shell tacos. The beef tongue (yeah yeah... I eat that.. so what? I'm Asian...) was alright. Roast Chicken - yummy, Porkchops - yummy. The chile relleno $5(or basically all tortas section) is like vegetarian cheap ass food haven. They give you white cheese stuffed medium size pepper with sides of rice, beans and salad. This is not authentic Mexico Mexican food, but it's the most authentic California Mexican food I've had in New York. Take the beans and rice for instance. The rice is the correct pale orange color and has the savory chicken broth flavor of my Bay Area childhood. The beans, whole and pinto in the classic Nor-Cal taqueria style, are buttery and tender. My tinga could have been spicier, but the chicken was tender and the sauce was flavorful and complex. Next time, the true test: How do Castro's burritos hold up to Cancun's on Mission Street in SF? I haven't been to many Mexican restaurants in NY, but from what I hear, the spices and flavor aren't the only thing that's weak. The chicken soft tacos were a bargain at $2 a pop... Very filling with fresh toppings. The carnitas, however, weren't as great. The meat that I had tried was good, but there were huge chunks of inedible skin too. Yuck. Recently, a restaurant called Los Pollitos III opened up in my neighborhood, offering slightly upscale Mexican offerings in a contrived sort of yuppie atmosphere. Good enough, but not special. But Castro's! Castro's, the underdog! Castro's, the scrappy fighter! Castro's, the lovable ragtag misfit! I am not Mexican by any stretch of the imagination, but I sense that it is very authentic, and I appreciate that. The atmosphere is warm and even a little intimate, and the waitresses are very nice. I used to only get burritos here, which are strange and a little divisive. But the tortas, sopes, and tacos here are the bomb, filling and delicious at bargain prices. HOT TIP: try the Philly Cheesesteak torta. Sounds weird, tastes great, six dollars. They have beer. They serve you good chips and salsa while you wait. The guacamole doesn't cost an arm and a leg. This place is great! Don't listen to the haters. Pretty much everything on the menu is really, really good. Everyone there is nice. It's super authentic (there are always a few mexican families eating dinner there) and has a new-ish outdoor area. It's an institution and is one of the best mexican places (outside of Sunset Park) in the city. The one thing I've heard is that the food gets a little less good in delivery. Came here with two friends for margaritas and dinner. Worst choice ever. One of us ordered a margarita on the rocks, two of us ordered the mango margarita. First red flag: there was powder in our mango margarita and we could taste it within the first two sips. Yes, you can mke flavored margaritas with powder, is it recommended when you advertise that your restaurant has "fresh juice"? Probably not. I wonder how they define fresh juice. Being that it was a time to relax, we ignored the powder, but if anyone wants to go for the drinks, be warned that the no-powder drink (margarita on the rocks) is a dollar less than the powdery fruit flavored margaritas. Why is the powder $1? I did not know that powder costs so much. The next warning sign--they get my order wrong. I got enchilladas while a friend got flautos and another got fajitas. They gave me fajitas and when I said I got enchilladas the waitress who took our order came back and said that I ordered fajitas. She then said enchilladas had sauce, and I said yes, yes they do. She kept on repeating it and my friendliness slowly started to dissipate. She then pointed to her ticket and said I ordered fajitas because she wrote two next to it. Saying that you wrote down fajitsa does not prove I did, it proves you were not paying attention to me. I made sure that I did not want to order fajitas because I wanted it in sauce and I wanted it to be wrapped. She then rudely stated again enchilladas come with sauce. In case everyone didn't know by the third time she stated it, enchilladas come with sauce. She then asked me what kind of sauce I wanted and placed in my order. Last warning sign, my friend asked for a glasss of water. The waitress said okay and then she gave us two cups of water. So either she gave us two, one for each of my friends and not for me or two because she did not hear correctly. Either way, I was mindful of whether or not there would be spit in the waters or in the food. I am never ever coming here again unless forced to or if it's free. I don't want to pay for rudeness. I have an issue with this fucking place. One day they take my debt card over the phone the next it's "cash on delivery only"! What is this shit?! A 1990's infomercial? They took my card over the phone (for delivery AND pick up) for 5 years prior to this year. Here are a few of my issues... 1. Why does the price of my order change every time I place the order? The exact same items totaled together always ranges from 10-14 dollars. 2. They wont take your groupon or other online coupons so don't waste your money on online gift certificates. Shit's bogus. 3. When I order in Spanish it arrives at my apartment 15-20 minutes quicker than when I speak in English (I am white). 4. Jesus shit everywhere up in that place. VERY offensive if you ask me. I'm not from California, I didn't spend spring break in Cancun, or a semester in Mexico. Maybe I am not qualified enough to write this review... but I'm going to do it anyway. In my book, the food from Castro's is barely passable; if anything, mediocre and overpriced. We paid $11.50 for 8oz dish of guacamole and an enormous bag of tortilla chips. How much is an avocado? $1.50 at the grocer down the street? I'm sorry, but you keep the chips, and throw in another avocado. Maybe if it was the best guacamole in the city and the tortilla chips were gilt gold, sure, $11.50 would be appropriate. If it weren't for the heinous price, the guacamole would be forgettable. How was the chorizo burrito I ordered? I couldn't even tell what meat it was, it was that bland. Even with all the "spicy" sauces tossed in my burrito, it didn't even fancy me one bit. The tortilla had all the flavor and intensity of the off brand at C-Town. Yum. My girlfriend ordered the milanesa torta which she affectionately referred to as the "blandanesa." This was the first time in a long time where I was genuinely disappointed with a meal. How this place garners so many "omg best mexican food in NYC" reviews is beyond me. Honestly, this place reminded me of when I was a child and I would stay for dinner at a friend's house on "homemade mexican night." My recommendation? Try Taqueria Tepango down the street. Tepango may not have the polish and ambiance of Castro's, but the food is much better and more affordable!
