have you ever ordered nachos and gotten five (5) chips on a plate? i ordered NACHOS and got five chips on a dirty plate with a spoonful of refried beans, a spoonful of sour cream, and a spoonful of fake guacamole. all for only 8.99!!!!! i've come here before, and i've gotten the supreme nachos, that cost like a dollar more, tonight i came and thought i didnt want old refried beans on my nachos and just wanted a f**** margarita, as i had just been thru a HURRICANE, so i ordered the nachos royal, and i got what is above. surprise! i asked the server and they all blankly stared and said yes, this is what it normally is. so i brought it up with who i assume was the main server, and he immediately began giving me a major attitude, and then he accused me of not letting him know that i didnt want refried beans. which ISNT THE PROBLEM, the problem is that i just got 5 chips for 8.99. we also got the wings, which was a bad move as they tasted microwaved. i am never coming back here. i hate you, mezcal. read more

This is hands down the worst dining experience of my life. My boyfriend and I were going to eat at Buttermilk Channel but due to a wait, and no room at the bar we decided to go next door for a drink. Although it was against my better judgement my boyfriend suggested that we stay at Mezcal for dinner. What a mistake. The bartender barely made eye contact and took no interest in us or our experience while making a strong and undrinkable margarita with cheap sour mix. We told him that we wanted to move out to the outdoor seating area for dinner and when we did we sat there for 15 minutes with no service, no menus, no water until I asked a 10 year old boy for menus. It was probably another 20 or more before anyone took our order. Despite having asked for the salad first it was another 30 minutes until we received our food. The salad was not dressed, the spicy shrimp dish was so spicy that it was flavorless and barely edible, and the seafood in the other dish was overlooked and bland. The waitress didn't come to ask us how things were for at least 20 minutes at which point we both felt sufficiently ill and just wanted to leave. Despite having asked for a check another 10 minutes went by at which point we went to the bar for our check. The check totaling $75 for two margaritas, guacamole, and two entrees was a slap in the face for such shitty service and terrible Mexican food. Furthermore my boyfriend and I spent the night feeling horribly sick. In retrospect if we hadn't wanted to leave so quickly because we felt so sick I might have asked for a manager. An huge selection. Great shrimp dishes. Guacamole is a 4 out of 5 (there are very few places that rate more than a 4 in my opinion), which is still pretty damn good. Their frozen margaritas have a nice kick. This is a great place to pig out on yummy Mexican food. read more

3.5 stars. Good margaritas, decent food. I'm not in love with their salsa, so when I do takeout or delivery I always sub my own. I love the variety of veggies in the Burritos Verduras and the Nachos el Guapo are just the ticket if you're a fan of sour cream. read more

Ok. Before you comment keep in mind one thing. Food is great. Service is only meh if you don't ask for items. Ask for extra tortillas and you get them. Food is always great staff just as wonderful. Margaritas and sangrias are a must. We always get free chips and salsa. I had the Boyero tonight. It's jumbo shrimp cooked with jalapeños, mushrooms, peas, onions in a white wine sauce mixed in rice. So good I had to stop myself from overeating. We also had the flan with was mediocre but hit the spot if you wanted something seriously sweet. We also had the tropedero, steak with onions, jalapeño, and tomatoes. Cooked to perfection. If you find yourself considering this restaurant, it might be time to reconsider that weird frozen stuff in the back of your freezer. Some background -- we're California transplants on the hunt for great Mexican food in NY, and to a certain extent, we've decided to take Yelp reviews with a grain of salt. We've discovered a few good places with less than stellar reviews. When a place is described as "bland," we give it the benefit of the doubt that the reviewer has become accustomed to artificially flavorful Tex-Mex that plagues this coast. So we didn't heed the warnings of other reviewers before we ordered takeout from Mezcal's. Big mistake. Huge. When I said "burrito" they apparently heard "chile relleno" because that's what I found when I got home. Similarly, our requests to 86 the sour cream and lettuce were also ignored. The chile was cooked decently enough, but its cheese was less jack, more white velveeta. The breading was either non-existant or had been completely dissolved into the red sauce. The rice was watery and had a distinct "boil-a-bag" taste. The refried beans were equal parts grease and water, and we're pretty much flavorless aside from the turn-your-stomach red sauce they were mixed with. Our combo plate (burrito, enchilada, tostada) just served up the same slop in stale tortillas. Avoid at all costs. Hopefully stuffing my mouth with Halloween candy will get rid of the residual nastiness of my dinner. read more

This is not fine dining. This is not Buttermilk Channel or Frankies, and it is not meant to be. This place is not hip. It is not cool. It doesn't use trendy locally-sourced ingredients you've never heard of. It is simply the cheap and cheerful neighborhood Mexican place that every neighborhood needs, and I highly recommend it. Nothing on the menu will surprise you, and that is exactly as it should be. It is the basic combo of burritos, enchiladas, tacos etc, but all are prepared well and generously proportioned. Pina coladas are so good. The fish tacos were fresh, tasty and ample and came with rice and beans. Hubby got the shrimp fajitas which was generous on the shrimp and the shrimp were quite big. I stopped by this please last night to have a drink while waiting for a table at Buttermilk Channel. I walked in and was greeted promptly and had a seat. I ordered the Cadillac Margarita and let me tell you it might just be the best one I've ever had! It was strong but nicely mixed. We also had the shrimp quesadilla appetizer with cheese and spinach. I was really impressed with the quality of food. I first ordered guacamole and chips which came with a nice size portion. I would definitely recommend their guacamole, fresh and authentic. Then moved to the garlic shrimp, which were sized jumbo and mouth watering with a garlic butter marinate and served with a rice pilaf to soak up the garlic butter base. FAJITAS were absolutely AMAZZZINNNNGGG! The Fajitas were honestly the best and freshest I have ever had. They were delivered pipping hot sautéed with mushrooms, spinach, chic peas, as well as the traditional fajita fixings. It was a fresh new twist on a traditional classic. I would highly recommend the fajitas with extra tortillas and guac, because the portions were big. I was pleased with the food and the service. I really felt like a guest in their home and I will be going back soon. read more

Hmm. I don't get it. Why would this place add a 30 dollar service fee?!? I love their patio and go often in fall and spring for the quiet and nice backyard vibe. It reminds me of parts of Rome. Suburban Rome. Dining under the sky surrounded by old buildings. The staff know me and always are kind and efficient. Sure, this is total Gringo Mexican so order accordingly. No fish or anything exotic. There is also I think is the owner there. An older señor who I always stop and say hello to. The large TV is great for the people who like soccer. It's low on style all around but that patio is heaven. So stop complaining. Buy local. And I really think that 30 dollar service fee was a huge mistake. This mexican place left me slightly drunk, but otherwise unhappy. The margarita was good. The chicken soup was flavorless. The fajitas etc were somehow simultaneously underspiced - even undersalted, yet tasted like cheap chow mien. Was it soy, or msg? Chips and salsa were fine. And the yard in the back was nice. My friend was in the mood for Tacos. So we walked around look for what appear to be a really decent Mexican restaurant in Carroll Gardens. We happened upon this place. When we first walked in, the hostess greeted us warmly, although the cooks stared at us strangely. My first thought was uh oh. We sat in the back patio. It looked pretty decent a rustic sort of feel. We were seated at a small table and therefore chose to move to a larger one. We are both over six feet tall, long legs. The waitress actually asked us to move back to a smaller table. She gave a lame excuse about it being dinner time and larger tables are for parties of 3 or more. Fair enough, yet there were two other empty large tables open, not to mention the several inside on the main floor and on the second. Anyway, I ordered the Catfish with Collard Greens and Garlic Mashed Potatoes. My friend ordered a Chicken Burrito. We ordered guacamole and drinks. First, the guac was cold and discolored, meaning pre-made and old, as well as flavorless. The drinks OK. The food came out super fast, like within 5 minutes, definitely less than 10. As someone that tends to cook often, I thought that strange. Well, it didn't take long to taste why. My friend's Burrito wasn't made properly, the cook left out some ingredients as listed on their menu. My fried catfish was bland, not seasoned well at all. The collard greens were more stem than leaf, and the garlic potatoes just OK. For the amount of money charged, I expected much better. The waitress tried to accommodate us but the damage was done. This is just not a place for those knowing truly great Mexican food. That was my first and last time eating there. I hope this helps. read more

Oh yeah... fajitas! Be prepared to walk away groaning after ordering the Chinameca fajitas. This scrumptious dish consists of beef, pork and chorizo, but also includes garbanzos, baby corn, peppers and onions on a sizzling plate. This is served with yellow rice and beans. Hate beans? ask for some pico de gallo at no additional cost.. The meats were well seared, nicely seasoned and juicy. Amazingly, the beef was of very good quality, something often lacking at other Mexican restaurants (did someone say Lobo??). The Arriero is akin to an Arroz con Pollo, but with white meat chicken and chorizo. A solid choice for those who are less adventurous, but hungry. A half pitcher of sangria is fine for two people and a very light buzz. The red contained apples, pears and oranges. Service was perfect: cheerful, respectful and truly interested in whether we liked our food. Sit by the large window/door and do a little people watching while you dine. read more

I'm a big fan of Mexican food & food close to my apartment. This hits both. Staff is super friendly, attentive & the food is consistently tasty, of high quality and abundant. Plus, the outdoor space is fun/cute as well. In addition to good food, good service, good location, seating is rarely a problem. If all the tables are full, eating at the bar is just as good. A great neighborhood place where you can sit back & enjoy an easy, fun meal, without feeling rushed out by staff, or stared at by people waiting at the door. read more

I love this place. We always order the vegetarian options, and they're delicious. Fresh ingredients, good flavor, there isn't much else to say. Me and my boyfriend used to come here ALL the time, at least once a week. The food was good and we loved the margaritas. The service was always mediocre. The last time we went there, we received our bill and noticed that there was a 30$ service fee, which was never added to our bill before. 30$ to be added to our bill which was for a party of 2 is a little ridiculous, especially since there was no sign anywhere, and when we asked what it was the waiter had no idea what to say to us, called someone else over and then all they told us was it was a new thing. Considering we always tipped, and we were decent customers we were very disappointed. We wont be back. read more
