According to Yelp, this is now my third visit to Calafuria. I've withheld giving my review on purpose. My first visit was a very unpleasant experience. They've recently opened, didn't offer reservations yet, and because of that, we were there for dinner for a total of 4 hours. The wait was just too long. I would've left early on, but it was a 4-course dinner, and we already had the first course (apps), so I had no choice but to wait for the next courses. Was the food worth the wait? No. I remember the pasta being undercooked, and the portions (not necessarily the taste) left me and hubs wanting for more. But, to be fair, I was already too annoyed at this point. I just wanted to get through the rest of the courses and get out of there. I chalked the dinner off to 'still sorting out the kinks' phase, and decided I would give them another try when they've found their rhythm.
Fast forward to a few months later. The concept is still the same ~ 4-courses (antipasto, pasta, entree, then dessert) for $35pp, Fridays and Saturdays only. The menu changes week-to-week, but they publish it on social media so you can check ahead of time. The biggest change is they now accept reservation, which I imagine helps a lot in managing the patrons.
There were 13 in our party. They set up a table for us on the patio which was nice because inside seemed a little too warm on this hot summer night. As the members of our party trickled in, we asked if they could serve some bread, or whatever appetizers they're serving that night. There were 4 kinds of bread (one of them a pizza bread, and another an interesting cheesy triangle), and they served plenty, which made me very happy. There was also a charcuterie plate, a big bowl of salad and some helpings of their home-made sausage. These were all good, and at par with what you could get in similar restaurants. These were also served family-style so we were constantly passing plates along, and because there were quite a few of us, we were getting more of a tasting rather than a full serving.
For pasta, mahB got the mushroom and truffle risotto, while I went for the quail ravioli. I did not enjoy my ravioli at all. It was on the bland side. It made me want to dip it into something to add more flavor. I traded it with mahB's risotto. which was a lot better, but alas, the rice was slightly undercooked. For entree, I had the seared scallops, and mahB had the braised beef shank. There were 3 small pieces of scallops and they came with (supposedly) deep-fried lemon zest. The scallops, according to my friend, reminded him of lemon and the ocean. I liked the lemon zest, as it definitely enhanced the taste of the scallops, without overpowering it. MahB's beef shank was tender and tasty, but just not hearty enough. Somehow, I'm still reconciling the fact that this is supposed to be an Italian restaurant, but the portions are definitely more 'French'. Dessert came which was vanilla cream with berries. I literally had 3 spoonfuls, and that's it. Overall, a better experience than my first visit. Service has greatly improved, so no complaints there. The food is definitely more interesting, but I am just not wowed by it. Would I recommend? Sure. It's a good place to have a light, leisurely dinner. Just make sure to check out their fixed dinner menu for the week.
PS. I also came here for lunch at some point. Had the cinque and cinque. I forgot what's in it, or why I ordered it. But I do remember eating half, and giving the other half away. Hubby's been here a few times (for lunch). He has no complaints. read more
