A few friends and I went to Arden to celebrate my birthday. Overall, the experience was a little strange and difficult to describe. First, the restaurant is beautiful. The décor and ambiance are definitely part of the experience. Because I'm limited in what I can eat, ambiance is especially important to me, and Arden does that very well. That, along with our experience with the host, is a big part of why I'm giving them four stars. Our waitress was pleasant, but her demeanor felt inconsistent--very warm and friendly one moment and somewhat distant the next. The service just felt a little off. The food was good, and we enjoyed what we ordered. One thing I found odd: they ask when you make the reservation whether you're celebrating anything, but I'm not quite sure why. We specifically noted that we were celebrating my birthday, yet it was never acknowledged during our visit. Overall, the beautiful setting, good food, and our experience with the host helped make up for the somewhat strange service experience. Four stars. read more

My husband and I had high hopes for this place because the bean dip they served us to start was very delicious. The place is located in a plaza next to Randy's Donuts. There was plenty of parking. It was not too crowded for a Saturday. We were seated immediately upon arrival. The ambiance is really nice and slightly upscale. I ordered the Pollo Serrano, carne asada plate, and the shrimp ceviche. My chicken from the Pollo Serrano was salty and slightly overcooked. The sauce and poblano was good. My husband's carne asada came out overcooked and lacked seasoning. The potato taquitos that came with his plate was also very salty. His guacamole and refried beans were good. The cheese enchilada was okay. Overall, the service was the best here. Our server was attentive and the manager was very wonderful in coming by twice and ensuring that we had a good experience. At their price point, I would expect the food to taste better than it did. We probably wouldn't make the trip here again. read more

I came here last night for my birthday, and unfortunately, the experience was a bit of a mixed bag. The food was amazing--everything tasted great, and I honestly couldn't complain about the quality. I was also impressed with how quickly the food came out. However, the service really took away from the experience. Not having silverware ready when the food arrived was frustrating, especially when you're sitting there with your meal and can't even start eating. Then having to wait for someone to bring it was another disappointment. For a birthday dinner, I was hoping for a little more attention to the overall service and experience. The food definitely deserves praise, but good service is just as important as good food. Great food, fast kitchen, but the service needs some improvement. read more

Calo's can't miss. I usually get the chicken fajitas. I've gotten the burrito before when really hungry because it huge and filling. Today I got the ribeye enchiladas and they were awesome. Then when we had our monthly staff lunch, my staff had such a great time they said let's come back again. They all got the calo's combos. So they had the Mexican corn, the rice, the beans. They just really loved them. Also one of my staff brought her daughter and she had a quesadilla, and she said I had the best time with my mom. So if you come to Calo's, it's good for the whole family and the staff and the team. read more

It's time to update my review. This is actually one of my favorite places. What I like best about this place is that they use only fresh ingredients to make their margaritas. I was unhappy when they changed to a cheaper tequila for my caddies. But they actually have a nice variety of other tequilas to choose from. I started requesting the Fortaleza Blanco which is amazing. They don't always have this in stock. Based on a recommendation, I tried Chinaco Blanco which has a great flavor. There are others tequilas that I plan to try also. So I'm back! The service is excellent! Our favorite servers are Ruby and Elizabeth, who always treat us amazingly! So we are regulars here. We usually sit on the patio. Which is perfect. Some days it gets too hot so we go indoors for the a/c. The booths are ok and sitting at the bar is fun watching your drinks get made. The food is really good but don't expect authentic Mexican food like your abuelita used to make. I only mention this so you don't go here expecting it to be like Los Compadres. Everything is very tasty and they use high quality ingredients. My favorites are the rib eye tacos, the shrimp fajitas, the chili verde, and the shrimp chimichanga. They use jumbo shrimp so any shrimp dish is great. One small complaint: I wish the refried means were more authentic. . For dessert, there are churros and flan to choose from!! read more

Came here for a date night before a jazz concert, and it was the perfect way to start the evening. We started with a Cadillac margarita and a blackberry margarita. Both were excellent, well balanced, and made with quality tequila. The shrimp taquitos disappeared fast and were easily one of the highlights of the meal. For our entrees, I ordered the lobster and shrimp enchiladas. They were rich, creamy, and loaded with seafood. The rice and black beans were seasoned well, which I always appreciate because sides can make or break a meal. My date had the rib eye tacos, and the steak was cooked perfectly and incredibly tender. The cheesy potatoes underneath were so good I had to steal a few bites. What really elevated the experience was our waiter, Anderson. He was an absolute delight. Friendly, attentive, and personable without hovering over the table. Service like that makes a difference. The ambiance was warm and inviting, making it a great date night spot. Even the bathrooms were spotless and well kept, which always says something about how a restaurant is run. We left full, happy, and made it to our jazz concert right on schedule. Came in for a special occasion dinner and it exceeded our expectations. Matter of fact, this is the first bougie Mexican restaurant, we've been to, that we actually dream about returning to. We were recommended this restaurant by some friends and drove an hour to try it out, only to arrive to be told they didn't have a table and that we would need to wait 30-45 min. Here's the crazy part, they had 12 available tables between inside and outside that had no one seated. Not only that, but there was absolutely no one waiting for a table, just us. My cousin was visiting from Florida, so we came here for dinner. Her headquarters for work is in El Segundo, which worked out perfectly! It turned into such a sweet, memorable night. Since it's only minutes from my daughter's office, she was able to join us too. My cousin is a March baby, but we still had to celebrate her birthday! This time, we decided to sit on the patio, and I'm so glad we did. I knew we were going to be deep in conversation, so I asked if we could have one of their nicest, quieter tables and they delivered. It was lovely, with a nice breeze and much more peaceful than sitting inside. The food was to me satisfying. I ordered the two-item combo (beef hard shell taco + chicken enchilada) with rice and beans, so satisfying. They also start you off with complimentary chips, salsa, and beans, which were delicious. My daughter's camarones had HUGE shrimp, and my cousin loved her chicken and asada tacos. Drinks were just as yummy; a lemon drop for me and a pineapple margarita for her. We mentioned it was my cousin's birthday, and the staff kindly helped us celebrate with a belated cake, which was such a nice touch. Caló is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants down here in the South Bay. It's definitely a "treat yourself" kind of restaurant though, as it's pricier/more upscale compared to your typical Mexican restaurants. They're definitely aiming for fancy rather than homey. That being said, the vibes are excellent, with Mexican music playing over the speakers and warm mood lighting; the servers are exceptionally friendly and attentive; and the flavors of the food are nice and bold. The beans here are like crack, I could *not* stop eating them. And the short rib enchiladas were equally amazing, I wish I had more! Desserts are for some reason not listed on the menu, but when my family and I went for my mom's birthday, there was a choice between: churros, flan, fried ice cream, and tres leches. We chose the tres leches, which was everything I could've hoped for in this dessert, and we inhaled it before I remembered to even get a picture! Nice and sweet, soaked in milk, and dusted with a good layer of cinnamon. Overall, Caló is a strong choice for anyone looking for a fancy meal with great ambiance and amazing service. read more

The vibe is definitely the star of the show here. We got to sit outside, and the whole setup made it feel like the perfect spot for either a date night or a casual night out with friends. The staff was friendly, helpful, and made the experience easy from start to finish. The drinks were probably our favorite part they tasted great and were almost too pretty to drink. As for the food, our honest take is that the appetizers are the way to go. The Fajitas Avocado Salad was delicious! I added protein of chicken, that made it more filling. The Salad could definitely feed two people. The taste was great, there were adequate amounts of sweet, tangy and the grilled chicken added a nice fire roasted effect. The service was great, it was a little busy but not a bother as I was attended to quickly. Ambiance was a somewhat romantic and casual setting at the same time. You could come with a couple of friends and have seating on the patio which has a larger area in my opinion. The menu has plenty to choose from and didn't skimp on portion size. Only thing I didn't care for was the placement of my seat that was available. I was seated at a table for 4 that was right near the walkway. Meaning people constantly passing over and near where I was seated. The only other available seat was at the bar which I didn't care to sit at since I choose not to have a alcoholic beverage. Haven't been here in a while and it was definitely just as good as I remembered. Chips, salsa and warm bean dip will always be a winner! Service was spectacular from Crystal. She really was a gem and extremely helpful and attentive. Tried the Beef queso tacos (birria) appetizer and they were quite tasty. Comes with 5-MINI tacos for $28. Based on the taste, I would definitely get them again. Price point wise...I don't think it was worth it. Also decided to share the Smokey Ceasar salad (with ribeye on top.) We were not pleased with this. It was just all wrong. The salad was flimsy and so was the steak. It looked good and based on the description, I thought that it would be full of flavor. It was not! Steak was also kinda rubbery and looked low quality. No one in the party finished it. This also was not cheap, so it was disappointing not to be able to finish it. As far as cocktails go, they don't miss here. The blackberry margaritas are the best I've had. Although it appears that the prices may have gone up slightly since my last visit, the food & drinks are overall good. I'll just stay away from the salads. Two cocktails each, two appetizers and a shareable salad (that we didn't eat), was $200 (pre-tip). A little hefty, so this is definitely a once in a while treat. read more

For $100 for lunch, it was a rip off. $36 for a "taco plate". It was a 3oz piece of rib eye in a pool of meat and cheese grease. The tortillas were too thin to "make a taco". To roll up, yes, but not to hold anything. The rice as overcooked and mushy . The beans needed more flavor. My partner ordered on the ($31) hidden combo menu: 2 chicken enchiladas and 1 shredded beef taco. Neither were available on the main menu. And he approved. The chips with the beans and salsa were good. The chips were superior. The beans were good. The salsa was decent. The service was great. Except the 2nd round of iced tea took way too long. ($12) The waitstaff were friendly. The outdoor seating was good. There was a nice breeze. Inside has nice AC, but it had a hint of cigar smoke . Came here on Christmas Eve w my mother and the staff were so sweet, everyone was very nice and our server Samuel was awesome! What a great personality. Funny guy. It was a lovely lunch and given that it was such a gloomy rainy day everyone else made it better. Okay now the food!! The food was delicious, the potato taquitos were SO GOOD. I was surprised! Great app to share! The nachos also are huge!!!! Mother and I both got the lobster and shrimp enchiladas and my friend got the rib eye enchiladas?? They were both good! I asked for spicy habanero which paired perfectly with my entree and I preferred the seafood over the beef. Both still awesome! Strawberry jalapeño margarita is not spicy at all so ask for some spice if you get it. Oh and ps Samuel made an expresso w whip cream concoction ... it was really good! Ask him to make you one!
