My friends and I had been traveling all day (I had driven over 6 hours), and the last thing we wanted to do when we arrived in LA was to search for a restaurant. We were staying near LAX and I didn't want to drive too far, so we stumbled upon this Mexican spot in the cutest little downtown area ever. El Segundo, you are THAT b*tch! We arrived around 5:30 on a Saturday and were seated immediately (thank goodness). Our server was super duper friendly and even had multiple conversations with us throughout the meal, sharing anecdotes and talking to my tattoo artist friend about getting a tat from her LOL. We quickly ordered some chips and queso (not free) and were blown away by how creamy and tasty the queso was. The tortas were also delicious and easy to scoop a lot of cheese on to. On to the menu, they had a good variety of Mexican dishes, but the price point, man. I thought $4-5 a taco at Barrio Queen in Arizona was steep, but this place charged $7-8 for a single small taco. I would've been okay with any menu item since it's Mexican and nothing under that cuisine could be bad, but seeing each enchilada over $30, made me steer clear of the main entree dishes. I also knew I wanted to try fish tacos, so I just opted for one fish taco and one grilled taco, with a side of mashed black beans. Crazy that some black beans also were at least $5. The fish taco was nicely battered and the guacamole was ripe and creamy, but the grilled chicken taco was nothing spectacular. There was also cauliflower tacos and beef brisket tacos ordered among us. My friend who ordered the beef brisket taco rated it 7.5/10, whereas the cauliflower tacos were rated 9/10. The food also took at least 20 minutes to arrive at the table. Both sauces my tacos came with were extremely spicy so I didn't even touch those. My friends enjoyed their meals, and the side of green rice two of them got was rather tasty. Overall, our server was the best part of the experience. Came all the way out to el Segundo from Denver to give this place a try and also since the company was paying for my trip. But regardless I hear this was one of the best and it was damn good. We started with chips and guac and they brink you those large tortilla whole chips that you get to break apart. The guac was great and very fresh tasting. Now for dinner I ordered the barrio tacos and they came out with two which scared me at first because who only eats two of these things. But they were freaking huge. One afternoon, my sister excitedly told me about a local restaurant serving up some of the best Mexican food she ever had. Living in SoCal, where good Mexican cuisine is everywhere, I was skeptical. So, obviously, I had to try it for myself. On my first visit, I ordered the Queso Fundido with tostadas, salsa, a Grilled Achiote Chicken Tostada, and a Baja Shrimp Taco. The warm, salty tostadas were addictive, and the queso was rich, gooey, and perfectly balanced with the sharp cheddar and milder Oaxaca cheese. The fire-roasted salsa was flavorful without being too spicy. While the chicken tostada was too spicy for my taste, the Baja Shrimp Taco was yummy, with bright lime flavor and cool slaw. I returned on Mother's Day with my sisters and tried the Chicken Pozole and a Barbacoa Beef Taco. The pozole was flavorful, though I wished it had more smokiness and hominy. The barbacoa taco tasted great, but the meat was a bit fatty for my taste. My mom also enjoyed the shrimp fajita plate that came with refried beans, rice, warm corn tortillas, and guacamole. We also ordered a carne asada plate that was also very good. The plates tasted as if they had been grilled over wood and coal to give it that flavor and charred coloring. For dessert, we tried the rice pudding panna cotta, bread pudding, and coconut flan. The bread pudding was warm and comforting with cinnamon and vanilla flavors that reminded me of Christmas but the coconut flan was my favorite. It was velvety sweet with hints of acidity from the pineapple glaze. I would pass on the rice pudding since I prefer a creamy rice pudding rather than solid one. The restaurant has a lively but comfortable atmosphere, is very family-friendly, and the service was polite and prompt. We did not wait to be seated and were served fairly quickly. Was a huge fan of the old pork chile verde that was on the menu so when I found out that it was being replaced I was extremely disappointed. However, I finally tried the new chile verde and I was extremely pleased with the plate. The meat was so tender that it basically came off the bone as soon as you touch it with the tortilla or fork. The flavor (sauce) is the same as the old recipe which is phenomenal. Overall I was very happy. SAUSAL honestly doesn't disappoint. Their customer service is good, the food is good, everything is so consistent every time that it's difficult to go to another restaurant. Bravo to the team and chef once again. This was my first time at this restaurant , we went on a Wednesday night with a large party and it was busy for a Wednesday! The ambiance is dark , moody with good music . All the food was 10/10! We had the appetizers , guac, corn and queso with the fresh tostadas! Every single item felt so fresh and tasteful! I ordered the birria tacos , 10/10! The rice and beans were amazing paired with the birria tacos on the consume . It was a little pricey but worth it for the food. Husband and I came in for date night, it was our second time. First time was with friends and food and experience was so good we had to come back. Second time around was still really good only complaint was my husband and I ordered a lot of dishes because we wanted to try a lot of dishes but everything we ordered came all at once and it was a hit overwhelming, appetizers came out with main dishes. We ordered guacamole with chips, ceviche, spicy tuna aguachiles, empanada, 3 of their taco selections (the potato rajas was my favorite), beef Chamorro all out back to back. Everything was really good I think next time I will ask them to space out dishes. We tried this restaurant on new year's eve for lunch because it was listed as one of the Resy restaurants for Amex platinum holders. It was a rainy day, so the restaurant wasn't packed. We actually ran into another group wanting to use their Resy credit lol Overall, it was a good experience. Service was police and friendly, and the food came out quickly. We loved the chips, guac and salsa. I'm told the pozole soup was great. The shrimp diablo (sauce on the side) was good flavor wise, but the shrimp tasted a bit old. You know that taste and smell when you leave seafood in the fridge for too long? That's what the shrimp was like and the fish in the fish tacos. Other than those bloopers, everything was great. I always enjoy coming here and sitting at the bar. I like chatting with the bartender when the place is not busy. They seem knowledgeable and have been spot on when recommending a cocktail to go with my meal. There's also always a good sports game showing on the TVs. I want to try more from the menu. It's a really great restaurant. Its 's beans and rice is phenomenal. The carne asada gives the "carbon" open fire grilled flavor. It's definitely a step up, from the other grubby Mexican restaurants. Also, exceptional is the Chile Verde and chips and salsa. I'd say, it's the best Mexican in the area. Luckily, we have some really good options here. Jaime Taqueria and Madre, but I'd give this restaurant the nod. All are good though. So, I have a new rating system......I will be write what I feel honestly about an establishment. The hostess said they have happy hour every night until 6pm- we ordered stuff from the happy hour menu and the regular menu and both were solid! To start I go their house margarita and it was strong! Stopped by for dinner this weekend, and Benjamin gave us a fantastic experience at Sausal. Without planning it, we also arrived during happy hour (yes on a Saturday). Benjamin did a great run down of the menu. We tried the chile verde, ceviche, baja shrimp taco, and guacamole. All items were fantastic, but the Chile verde paired with black beans and green rice stood out the most. Their mescal margarita was also delicious. We will absolutely be returning! The ambiance of the restaurant and vibes were awesome, they have wonderful dishes and our server was great. We started off with the ceviche for appetizer which had was made with coconut milk, so good. Our server recommended a margarita with passion fruit for my wife and I tried their Old Fashioned of the month also really good but my only complaint was the noise level was extremely high. Been here quite a few times and it is consistent. It does get crowded on Friday and Saturday night so make a reservation. The last time I was there I got the shrimp fajita plate and it has a good amount of shrimps though not much spice or bold favor to them. Personally, the star of the show for me is there rice and beans. I look forward to it. The drain circade as well. It can get noisy on Friday and Saturday night as they have music going on in the background. Which my older parents found on the louder side. I was pleasantly surprised by my recent dinner at Sausal! My parents were in town visiting and I hadn't been to this spot in over 4 years but had good memories and they did not disappoint. We didn't realize there was a local fair goin on so downtown (including the restaurant) was absolutely PACKED. Even with how exceptionally busy it was we still got sat right away, great customer service from our waitress and food came out in a timely manner. We got chips and salsa to start, my mom and I both got the grilled shrimp salad which was delish and my dad got a taco plate which he also loved. I attended a private group function tonight at Sausal for the first time. It was an educator conference for a local school. I cannot tell you what a wonderful experience it was! The staff was so attentive and immediately offered me drinks from the bar as well as trays of appetizers like empanadas. Next they really listened to what I liked (tequila/mezcal) and made me the tastiest Margaritas. Jose and Karina were especially helpful. They went through the menu with me and helped me pick the best dinner and drink options. Pick the carne asada plate *chefs kiss* They followed up at the end of the night to see if I needed anything and I generally appreciated the care and attention they offered. I love this place so much. I've been there with my boss and other coworkers for our Christmas dinner and we loved the place so I needed to bring my husband for our special day. I only give Sausal 4 stars because our waiter was fantastic and took very good care of us even going the extra mile of intertwining the takeout bag handles to keep the bag very secure. Otherwise 3 stars, as the food was good but not great and the drinks were again good but not great. I tried the enchiladas with cashew mole, but my favorite part of that dish was the rice and beans. A bit of a let down. We also tried the Carne Asada, which was the best dish, though did not have much flare and seemed a bit like a plain jane steak. The chips and queso were the most disappointing. As a Texan, seeing Tex-mex queso on a menu in Los Angeles gets me excited, but is inevitably a let down every time. I would stay away from that starter, though the idea of the chips being whole tortillas you have to break up was a fun gimmick. I enjoyed a delicious fruity margarita with the meal, but all in all I was not blown out of the water by Sausal and have better go to Mexican restaurants that I would rather go to. read more
