It's a really great restaurant. Its 's beans and rice is phenomenal. The carne asada gives the "carbon" open fire grilled flavor. It's definitely a step up, from the other grubby Mexican restaurants. Also, exceptional is the Chile Verde and chips and salsa. I'd say, it's the best Mexican in the area. Luckily, we have some really good options here. Jaime Taqueria and Madre, but I'd give this restaurant the nod. All are good though. So, I have a new rating system......I will be write what I feel honestly about an establishment. This was my first time at this restaurant , we went on a Wednesday night with a large party and it was busy for a Wednesday! The ambiance is dark , moody with good music . All the food was 10/10! We had the appetizers , guac, corn and queso with the fresh tostadas! Every single item felt so fresh and tasteful! I ordered the birria tacos , 10/10! The rice and beans were amazing paired with the birria tacos on the consume . It was a little pricey but worth it for the food. The waitress was great, it was a large group and made sure everyone had their drinks and the food came out in a timely manner. We will be returning and bringing our friends. We tried this restaurant on new year's eve for lunch because it was listed as one of the Resy restaurants for Amex platinum holders. It was a rainy day, so the restaurant wasn't packed. We actually ran into another group wanting to use their Resy credit lol Overall, it was a good experience. Service was police and friendly, and the food came out quickly. We loved the chips, guac and salsa. I'm told the pozole soup was great. The shrimp diablo (sauce on the side) was good flavor wise, but the shrimp tasted a bit old. You know that taste and smell when you leave seafood in the fridge for too long? That's what the shrimp was like and the fish in the fish tacos. Other than those bloopers, everything was great. Was a huge fan of the old pork chile verde that was on the menu so when I found out that it was being replaced I was extremely disappointed. However, I finally tried the new chile verde and I was extremely pleased with the plate. The meat was so tender that it basically came off the bone as soon as you touch it with the tortilla or fork. The flavor (sauce) is the same as the old recipe which is phenomenal. Overall I was very happy. SAUSAL honestly doesn't disappoint. Their customer service is good, the food is good, everything is so consistent every time that it's difficult to go to another restaurant. Bravo to the team and chef once again. Husband and I came in for date night, it was our second time. First time was with friends and food and experience was so good we had to come back. Second time around was still really good only complaint was my husband and I ordered a lot of dishes because we wanted to try a lot of dishes but everything we ordered came all at once and it was a hit overwhelming, appetizers came out with main dishes. We ordered guacamole with chips, ceviche, spicy tuna aguachiles, empanada, 3 of their taco selections (the potato rajas was my favorite), beef Chamorro all out back to back. Everything was really good I think next time I will ask them to space out dishes. For dessert we ordered their Spanish sticky date cake and Mexican chocolate panna cotta, both very delicious! read more

I only give Sausal 4 stars because our waiter was fantastic and took very good care of us even going the extra mile of intertwining the takeout bag handles to keep the bag very secure. Otherwise 3 stars, as the food was good but not great and the drinks were again good but not great. I tried the enchiladas with cashew mole, but my favorite part of that dish was the rice and beans. A bit of a let down. We also tried the Carne Asada, which was the best dish, though did not have much flare and seemed a bit like a plain jane steak. The chips and queso were the most disappointing. As a Texan, seeing Tex-mex queso on a menu in Los Angeles gets me excited, but is inevitably a let down every time. I would stay away from that starter, though the idea of the chips being whole tortillas you have to break up was a fun gimmick. I enjoyed a delicious fruity margarita with the meal, but all in all I was not blown out of the water by Sausal and have better go to Mexican restaurants that I would rather go to. read more

Dropped by this weekend to celebrate yet another birthday celebration. The service was fantastic, I ordered the barbacoa taco, which I liked enough, though I would probably order something different next time. To my surprise the arroz con pollo as basic as it sounds, was actually so good! The way that they marinate the chicken is perfect. Their aguachile plate was okay, I think if you're a big tuna fan this would be a good choice. This place is absolutely delicious. From the appetizers, the entrees and the drinks! My coworker and I decided to grab a bite to eat at a new place and yap! She got a chicken dish with cilantro lime rice and my goodness it was amazing. I got a Caesar side salad paired with a chicken taco & a potato taco. Even better. The drinks were tasty as well, very flavorful and not "too" strong. The parking is a little tricky, but doable. The service was great as well. Very attentive and professional. I always enjoy coming here and sitting at the bar. I like chatting with the bartender when the place is not busy. They seem knowledgeable and have been spot on when recommending a cocktail to go with my meal. There's also always a good sports game showing on the TVs. I want to try more from the menu. It all seems promising and the dishes that I did try were not disappointing. Even the wings were delightfully flavorful. I normally don't enjoy sauced wings and am a pretty picky when it comes to wings but the wings here were not overcooked and the sauce was pleasantly different (not your normal buffalo sauce). read more

Stopped by for dinner this weekend, and Benjamin gave us a fantastic experience at Sausal. Without planning it, we also arrived during happy hour (yes on a Saturday). Benjamin did a great run down of the menu. We tried the chile verde, ceviche, baja shrimp taco, and guacamole. All items were fantastic, but the Chile verde paired with black beans and green rice stood out the most. Their mescal margarita was also delicious. We will absolutely be returning! My friend and I enjoyed our meal at Sausal. She had the Caesar salad and we shared veggie tacos (potato and cauliflower) and the veggie enchiladas. We also had guacamole and chips. The guacamole and the tacos were really good. I thought the enchiladas were a bit bland but ok. Margarita was also just ok. The hostess said they have happy hour every night until 6pm- we ordered stuff from the happy hour menu and the regular menu and both were solid! To start I go their house margarita and it was strong! Sausal is a restaurant that has excellent food and very good margaritas, the service is usually exceptional as well. Where they fall short (and I mean way short) is the host department. Many weeks ago I showed up (as patrons of restaurants do) without calling and was shocked to find out the entire restaurant was closed and rented out to a private party. The private party began at 6pm and I showed up at 5:15pm. I am usually done eating/gone in about 30 minutes. I was told I had to be "done in 5 minutes" if I wanted to eat (nobody can order/eat/pay in 5 minutes, this was such a weird thing to say to a paying customer at 5:15pm, 45 minutes before the private party was to start. I ended up leaving confused and somewhat sad. I later talked to a manager that informed me this happens from time to time. I then showed up about a month later and they were doing ANOTHER restaurant buyout where the public was not welcome. I learned my lesson and decided I would always call from now on. Today at 4:50pm I called and asked if the restaurant was open to the public today and the host said yes. I then said (to be sure) "ok so I can come in 20 minutes and sit down?" and she said "yes" I then show up and the place is packed, which is probably normal for them on 5-5. What was really disturbing is the 3 people at the host stand saw nothing whatsoever wrong with them NOT telling a customer about the wait on the phone - isn't that the whole job of a host? They even hit me with the "the bar is open seating" jab - but when I glanced at the bar every chair was full and another person was standing behind the chair. I wish the food and service (exceptional) translated to the host stand at this restaurant, because there are some very serious issues with how the hosts do their job and talk to customers. read more

I attended a private group function tonight at Sausal for the first time. It was an educator conference for a local school. I cannot tell you what a wonderful experience it was! The staff was so attentive and immediately offered me drinks from the bar as well as trays of appetizers like empanadas. Next they really listened to what I liked (tequila/mezcal) and made me the tastiest Margaritas. Jose and Karina were especially helpful. They went through the menu with me and helped me pick the best dinner and drink options. Pick the carne asada plate *chefs kiss* They followed up at the end of the night to see if I needed anything and I generally appreciated the care and attention they offered. The restaurant itself is intimate with beautiful decor and has great music. I will definitely recommend and revisit Sausal another day! If you have a special event this is a fun venue. read more

Hosting a few visitors from out of town and they wanted to eat Mexican food for lunch. We were in the El Segundo, did a search on yelp and Sausal looked good. Location was right off of main street. Found street parking. Walking in, everyone was warm & welcoming, the place looks really nice. We picked a high table and dove into the menu. We ordered fresh Guac with massive tortilla, Birrria Taco Plate, Barbacoa, Crispy fish, then had Spanish sticky date cake and Espresso's. Birria was my fav. Excellent Happy Hour menu with food and drinks. Great for groups and very nice space as well. There is street parking and some lots nearby so parking can take some time. The standout dish for me was the Ceviche. It's not on the HH menu but so unique and delicious with coconut cream giving it a tropical vibe. Been here quite a few times and it is consistent. It does get crowded on Friday and Saturday night so make a reservation. The last time I was there I got the shrimp fajita plate and it has a good amount of shrimps though not much spice or bold favor to them. Personally, the star of the show for me is there rice and beans. I look forward to it. The drain circade as well. It can get noisy on Friday and Saturday night as they have music going on in the background. Which my older parents found on the louder side. I was there last night with my husband, we were celebrating our anniversary. The food was amazing the service was great. I don't remember our waiters name but he was so nice to us. I love this place so much. I've been there with my boss and other coworkers for our Christmas dinner and we loved the place so I needed to bring my husband for our special day. I'm really confused about all the 5 star ratings. I got the chicken with rice plate and the cilantro rice had great flavor but the chicken was so bland. The whole dish needed a sauce desperately! I was pleasantly surprised by my recent dinner at Sausal! My parents were in town visiting and I hadn't been to this spot in over 4 years but had good memories and they did not disappoint. We didn't realize there was a local fair goin on so downtown (including the restaurant) was absolutely PACKED. Even with how exceptionally busy it was we still got sat right away, great customer service from our waitress and food came out in a timely manner. We got chips and salsa to start, my mom and I both got the grilled shrimp salad which was delish and my dad got a taco plate which he also loved. The restaurant has a fun indoor/outdoor vibe and this is a great spot to take family or friends or even a date night (but not the 1st date because it gets quite noisy and you won't be able to hear each other ). Sausal is a new favorite of mine! Swung by for Dine LA and thoroughly enjoyed the empanadas and lamb barbacoa enchiladas. The meat was so tender and the tomatillo green sauce was fresh and tangy! I also was surprised at how refreshing their margarita was - citrus forward, not too sweet. I had a good overall experience last night (3/21), but one thing stood out that I think management should be aware of. The bartender had extremely long hair in a ponytail, but it was frequently falling forward and getting in the workspace while preparing drinks. I know California requires proper hair restraint for food and beverage handling, and this didn't feel fully compliant from a hygiene standpoint. It might be worth reinforcing hair containment standards behind the bar. I rarely frequent El Segundo aside from having dinner at Jame (next door) a few times and surprised to find a rare gem. Sausal is an upscale Mexican restaurant located in the old town part of El Segunda. Aside from the tasty dishes here, the service here is superb. We came here for brunch not too long ago. It was fairly empty but then again so is this part of town. The ceviche is refreshing with fish swimming in coconut leche de tigre, lime, pepitas, cilantro and chiles. It's served with frisbee like tostadas. I ordered a chicken pozole soup. Pretty good and nice and tangy. Wish they used dark meat instead of breast which lacked fatty flavor. The fish tacos were freshly made. Crispy fish and house made warm tortillas with charred tomato crema on the side were delicious. Pork chili verde with corn elote was very good. Served with corn tortillas. I only ate half of this dish since it was very rich in flavor and a lot of food. The best dish was the corn, cheese, & broccoli enchiladas with salsa casero de tomate was the highlight dish. No meat and great without. The creamy tomato enchilada sauce was delicious. Actually, this sauce could be a great pasta sauce too. Service here was very attentive and friendly. The hostess here could use customer training though and some warmth and attentiveness.
