Fairly decent food at #2. I haven't been to the original El Sombrero, so I couldn't tell you if it's any better or worse. I can tell you this, it's way better than what sits across the parking lot. Located at the end of a strip mall, #2 makes do with what little space that has been allotted them. If you're not friendly with whom you're sitting at the beginning of your meal, you sure will be by the end! Quite intimate are the booths. As I mentioned, the food is fairly decent. I believe that I'm being fair with that assessment. There are some hits and misses, but mostly hits. Like the taquitos. They're big and flavorful, and they come with rice and beans, which are also a hit. I'd take a pass on the ground beef offerings. There's better stuff on the menu. Try the Chile Rellenos, though. They're spot on. You'll get full at "the hat." If you're looking for a place to take the edge off a long day of surfing, or if you've got the munchies, this is for you. The prices are a bit steep, but bite the bullet. It's worth it because they don't use lard. That lubricant can foul up the stoutest of constitutions. Quick Tip: I wonder if anyone has noticed that they serve their Coke in Pepsi cups. read more

Originally I thing this was a pick up n go.or maybe a fast food type of dining, however, there were quite a few patrons seated and it was near capacity. Changing my mind, I decided I'd sit dow and took the last table. After i ordered at the front the cashier and the servers were quite chill bringing me water and chips. I've lived in SoCal almost all of my 40 years of life, and Mexican food is one of my favorite cuisines, so I've eaten at a lot of Mexican restaurants including on numerous trips to Mexico. The meat here tastes really bad. The chips are bland. The salsa is ok but if you order a container of it for take-out, they only give you a handful of chips with it. Taco's were discusting... the shell was okay, but the insides were made up of mostly lettuce and a tiny amount of meat. Even their salsa was mediocre. My dish came with a side of rice and beans and they were okay, but very little in terms of quantity, and for $17+ you'd think I'd get a ton more food. In short, in a pinch, I'd go kicking, but you'd be far better off going to LBJ's in South Redondo, or Tacos El Galoso (which has 2 locations in Hermosa). Long story short, for 2 kids meals and 1 adult meal, it came to almost $38 (no tip price / Fall 2024 prices). Just way too much money for Mexican food, especially given the quantity and quality. read more

El Sombrero has been an establishment in the South Bay for years, and I had to give it a try. I had a fish taco and potato taco, along with a side of rice. The tacos were warm, tender, and very tasty, and absolutely packed with lettuce inside. This is just my personal preference, but I would've liked to have had less lettuce in my tacos. This was my children's favorite restaurant for many many years. It's been probably six months since I've been back here. I had the worst service ever. My meal was $18 plus iced tea 3.00. My friend wasn't hungry so she got a side of beans, she asked for cilantro and onions on it. They charged 5.00 for a side of beans an extra four dollars for onion and cilantro ($9.00 for a side of refried beans ) without telling me it would be a charge and my bill / total bill 33.00 without the tip. Plus i had to ask for more chips 3 times (only needing one refill) i had to ask for the flour tortillas that came with my meal twice. We opted for ground beef taco and we were so happy with our choice--the ground beef was perfectly seasoned and it also tasted like the taco had refried beans and it complimented the ground beef well in the tacos! -unfortunately we didn't like our Chile relleno, enchiladas, Spanish rice, or the wet burrito. The food was delicious when they served it they did warn us that the plate was hot. I had the chicken enchilada and it was very tasty. It could've had a little bit more sauce. They did serve us with chips and salsa before hand. Interestingly enough, I've eaten at another location and that location served us the chips and salsa, but they were round whole chips. The service was very nice and very friendly. The place got very busy suddenly and then emptied out there seem to be a lot of regulars, which is nice to know. it is very casual which is nice if you're looking for good Mexican food, I highly recommend this place don't miss out. read more

I give this location five stars because everything was right. From the customer service given to us by Raul to the portion size to the cost. Raul was very outgoing and down to earth. He gave me the impression that he pays attention to the likes and dislikes of his customers. I ordered a wet carne asada burrito. I don't like guacamole and asked him to leave that out, to my surprise he asked "you don't want sour cream either right?". That impressed me very much and I commended him for paying attention to his customers. I told him no sour cream either. The price in my opinion is equal to the amount of food you recieve. When they feed you, it's not just for one sitting, it's for leftover's as well. I love the way they prepare the "to go" plates. It's prepared in such a way that if you need to reheat it in an oven, no need to look for a plate. Their aluminum foil and pans make that an easy task. By the way, the burrito taste awesome reheated. Nice little Mexican restaurant with standard Mexican fare and good sit-down service. I met a friend here for lunch and was invited to sit anywhere. I picked a booth. The friendly server brought me chip and salsa and filled a drink order while I waited. I ordered the #6 - taquitos with rice and beans. The food was good but not anything particularly special. Our food came quickly, and the server refilled our iced teas more than once. When they bring the bill, you need to take it to the front to pay. Overall, this was a reasonably-priced place to meet a friend and chat. The service was good and the food was tasty. I would have given five stars if the food had been spectacular instead of ordinary. They brought us out stale chips. I sent them back and they brought out warm stale chips. The shrimp on the shrimp cocktail were mushy. They obviously use the night before left overs to serve the next day. The carnitas were legit though. read more
