I had Marissa made a cake for me. It looked very nice outside, BUT super hard!! And the inside was not only not what I wanted it to be, but also the cake itself was uneatable. No one finished their piece of cake and we also had to throw another half of it away. I am going to leave 3 stars just because it looked good. But I would never get another cake from Marissa again. We had very bad experience with Marissa. We ordered the cake for our wedding for 120 people. Which supposed to be four tier. We paid for delivery and Marissa delivered the cake to our wedding hall (two hours before the wedding), but one of the tiers was damaged and we ended up with 3 tiers of cake. She called us and offered 100$ discount, and said that there is nothing she can do to fix it. The cake looked so small and it was not enough cake for all our guests. So we accepted her offer because we had no other choice, or we should've ended up having no cake. $100 discount could not replace our disappointment. VERY BAD business attitute!!!!!!! read more

I was really forcing myself to keep my cool over the weekend after this awful experience I've had with Marissa over a cake I ordered a month in advance, but wow she really upset me after she did not make my vision come true. One word to describe Marissa is unprofessional. When I called after seeing the wonderful reviews on yelp of over 5 stars, I knew she would be the right person to call. However the first conversation we had did not satisfy me, especially because she laughed in a snobby way when i told her my budget was from 50-60 because it was a rather small cake for only 8-10 people max. I decided to ignore her snobby laugh and gave it a chance because it is not easy to find someone who can make a cake with a cat on it without doing a sloppy job. After sending her a photo of the cat and the flavors that I wanted to choose, I thought we were all set . When I messaged her in the morning to confirm her address to pick up the cake, she kinda hinted it out that this cake was not even being done on time, because she said "the later you come the better it is". I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt because I know she has tons of orders on a weekly basis so she must of been bombarded. Oh my god, when I arrived to her house [couldn't even find it in the first place, note to customers it is on a lower basement level], she comes outside to greet me with a look of shame telling me that she did not do the cat cake, she claims she didn't have time this week and that she is going to give me a cake with the same flavors and white trimming for no charge at all because she saw how mad I was and I guess she felt guilty. After trying super hard not to explode because the cake was free of charge, I decided to let it go. You know what, I can't let it go because when I opened the cake she didn't even take two frickin seconds out of her day to write a happy birthday message for my friend. She made it so obvious that she put some cake together last minute or perhaps it was a leftover that she did not want, I was so embarrassed when the cake came out. The only reason I am going to give her two stars as opposed to one is because the cake itself tasted really good, it had the perfect amount of chocolate cream filling, nor was it too heavy or overwhelming, it was a rather light tasty cake that all the guests liked. Too bad the presentation was a joke. If you want to take the risk of using Marissa I am sure she can do good work as listed in other reviews, but does she care about the interests of the customer , um NO. just wow. read more

I can not say enough good things about working with Marissa and the quality of her work. I luckily came across Marissa's page while I was in search of a vendor for my husbands 30th surprise party cake - knowing exactly what I wanted most traditional bakeries tried charging me a ridiculous amount of money and the quality was not worth the price. Once I found Marissa I was hopeful that she would be able to help - when she called to discuss details and prices she really went out of her way to work with me and understand exactly what I was looking for. The day of the party when the cake arrived I was beyond impressed and so happy the cake looked exactly the way I had pictured it & once me and my husband tasted it I knew I could never even think of using anyone else besides Marissa for any type of specialty cake ever again. One, for an author, Marissa made as a book with the cover of his first book in exact detail. She made the second cake, for a cat owner, with the likenesses of both cats atop the cake--statuettes--not surface drawings. Amazing! The recipients were very pleased with both the decoration and delicious cakes within. I can't say enough good things about Marissa's professionalism, talent, and kindness. She aims to please. I felt like I was taking a bit of a chance, in light of the fact that I did not know anyone personally who had ever used Cakes By Marissa before. I chose Marissa purely based off of the other Yelp reviews and the beautiful pictures of the cakes on the website. Well apparently, sometimes its worth taking a chance. The cake was OUTSTANDING!!! First of all, it looked exactly like the one on the website, with the exception of the color. The cake on the website was green. I requested light blue. The shade Marissa used was perfect. In fact, everything about the cake was perfect. I was skeptical about how it was going to taste. I picked a dulce de leche filling. My hope was that it would at least taste half decent because I figured that there was no way the taste of the cake could ever match its external beauty. I was dead wrong. No exaggeration...this was the best cake I have ever had! It was moist and absolutely delicious! Furthermore, the texture of the fondant icing was soft and not too sugary. My opinion was shared by every single one of my guests. They all raved about it, including my finicky best friend, who told me that this was the first dulce de leche cake she enjoyed. She was absolutely floored by its taste. This company is a hidden gem in Brooklyn and I am so happy that I discovered it! I found Marissa via Yelp when I was browsing around to look for a cake for my son in Brooklyn I normally don't search and by based off online reviews I would rather experience at first and then continue to purchase but this was different. I took my chance and I have to say I was not disappointed every Star Marissa has is well-deserved and I'm giving her 5 stars the transaction was seamless I messaged her on Yelp she responded Within a day we communicated in one day of what I needed and cost and didn't communicate again until the day of pickup which is today when she messaged me the actual picture of the cake. Not only was it cake beautiful it actually tasted very good. The fondant did not taste bad at all and her cake was not overly sweet and filled with frosting it was just right for some reason she managed to make it just the way I like it. The only thing that was not the same was the color of the Stars they were a light yellow just a couple Shades off but it didn't matter to me because it did not impact the overall look and it's not a big deal to me she followed everything I requested. I am recommending Marissa and I will be using her again for future cakes for my children read more

Cakes by Marissa was everything I wanted and so much more. I was looking for someone to make a great for my dads surprise 50th birthday party. It was a Casino themed event. I found her on yelp and book her strictly based on reviews online. I have never tired her cakes before nor did I know anyone that has booked with her in the past. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't nervous or unsure what the cake wound look or taste like but once you speak with her, she definitely puts some of the worry off your mind. She's very friendly, listens to every detail of what you want, and gives excellent suggestions or changes that she thinks would be better. Not to mention her Red Velvet with cream cheese filling is AMAZING!!!!! I loved the cake, so did my dad and all our guest. They can't stop talking about how awesome it looked and tasted. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE & MEDIOCRE CAKE!!!!!!!!!!!! Taste was not terrible but far from amazing, appearance also not terrible but I was not impressed at all, in fact I was little disappointed the fondant was lumpy and details were very amateur. She is very unprofessional in every way, I told her my party starts at 4 so I'll need to pick up the cake between 2/2:30 she said ok that will be perfect... day of the party she calls me at 2:14 (while I was 2 blocks from her about to pick it up) and says the cake is not ready please come at 3:30... What a waste of my time... I went back home to finish setting up my party and by 3:30 I could not go get it myself since I had guests in my home so I texted her saying my neighbor is there to pick up the cake she replied still not ready putting a few last details... At 3:54 she texted me its done I'm going to pack it up now and I'll bring it out, mind you my neighbor waited in the car double parked in front of her building for 35 minutes so I was really annoyed with her but I still planned on being polite and telling her everything was good (but never actually using her again) and then she really set me off... The next day she sends a text message reminding me to pay the balance through papal as we agreed from the beginning except now she tells me to use the "send money to friends and family" option as apposed to "payment for goods and services" option this way she won't get charged a fee. I told her I will not do that because then I get charged a fee and as her customer I am not responsible for payment fees. She then asked me to send her a check or drop off money at her home I said no I can not do that we originally agreed to use paypal and so I payed the balance through papal using the payment for goods and services option (which was the correct way to do it) and she informed me in a very nasty way that she spoke with paypal and I will be getting charged a fee for using a credit card. I was not actually charged a fee because paypal doesn't work like that, but the bottom line is that this woman clearly does NOT run a professional business. read more
