We've just moved here from Portland OR, which is a big coffee culture. I had hopes West Hartford would have a place I could call home: a homey, attractive comfortable environment that wasn't too noisy with great coffee. The Starbucks around the corner was cramped and all the tables were near the cold air coming in the door. So we tried Cafe Sofia; just as small but we finally got seats. The sound of coffee machines were so loud. We tried to get a mild coffee drink for me but after 3 tries in 40 mins - the woman just couldn't provide a milder, less bitter drink. Even my husband pulled a face at the taste. The final straw came when the nice woman making the coffee put sugar in it after I'd told her no sweetener. She seemed unperturbed about my blood sugar issues saying she tried to take away the bitterness. Diabetics beware. We left with no coffee for me; we didn't request a refund because she tried; she just wasn't a barista. Giving up hope of finding somewhere here. read more

Wow! The lady who works behind the counter is rude, disrespectful, and tactless. Unfortunately, their food and coffee are mediocre, at best. I've been there a few times the last 7 years and found their food to be underwhelming. However, after today's customer service, I'm never going there again. I'd rather go to The Hartford Baking Company, or even Starbucks, if I have the choice. I'm all about supporting local businesses, but definitely not this one! read more

I stopped in with my daughter after checking out a few shops in West Hartford Center. They had me at the coffee sign in the window. I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and the very kind woman that cashed us out. I'm guessing she might be Sofia. I decided on a crepe after seeing all of their options. THIS WAS THE BEST CREPE I HAVE EVER HAD. I'm not going to lie, I savored every bite. Coffee was great too. The staff were so sweet and I loved the frames with the money from all over the world wishing Sofia luck on her business. Wishing Sofia luck! Cool place to grab a coffee or espresso. Had a biscotti but it didn't have much flavor, could be spoiled because I make my own though.

I've been here twice and the coffee is very good. The first time I went I had a good experience with the barista, the second one was a little more rude. The second time I had forgotten to mention that I wanted skim milk so when I did say it she looked at me and answered with a pretty rude tone "but I already put the milk in." I went with it and its really what ever about the milk, I just disliked that she said it so rudely, where she could have said it in a nicer tone without the attitude. read more

Got a lemon/brown sugar crepe and it was good. But not enough for me to rattle on and on and on about for all of eternity. Call me a traveling snob, but after chomping on crepes on Parisian boulevards late at night and getting them made before my eyes in a matter of nanoseconds, the wait here was interminable. Nice service by the two ladies at the counter, but crepes to-go are served in a styrofoam take-out container, rather wrapped in a cone-like formation to ease the task of eating the thin pancake while strolling WHC. read more

Went in for dessert and coffee after dinner. Very cute decor and good amount of seating, the place was very busy on a weeknight at 9:30pm. Hubby ordered the hot chocolate which had whipped cream on top. All we could taste was whipped cream and couldn't taste the chocolate in the drink. I had the Mexican mocha which had coffee, chocolate, milk, honey, amaretto, and cinnamon. Sounds delish right? All I could taste was bitter coffee w/ gritty cinnamon floating in it. The crepe was good, just your standard nutella with fruit and powdered surgar. I think maybe because it was closing the drinks were not as good as we were hoping. All you need to know is the woman with blonde hair (assuming the owner?) is extremely rude and unkind. And the food is inconsistent and mediocre. Please read all the negative reviews for more on this woman and her bad attitude. We arrived today at 8:10 - they open at 8am - and the first thing she says is "you know you'll have to wait 10 minutes". The first thing I was hoping to hear was "good morning, what can I get for you?" I tried to engage her in light conversation in hopes she'd lighten up and crack a smile. No luck. She seemed very annoyed that we came in that early and that she had to cook for us. Hello?!?! Isn't that why you're there? Her poor attitude set the tone for an all around bad experience. The crepes were overcooked and my coffee was just ok. When you are consistently rude to customers (read the reviews!) and serve subpar food, it may be time to rethink your career choice. read more

This review is not about their food because I I didn't even get as far as getting the food. I have been in restaurant/ food industry for over 10 years now and here are the basic rules that went wrong at cafe Sofia today: 1. Do not argue or belittle your customer from the counter and across the dining room. 2. If you have more that one person dining then do not send their food half an hour apart. They might be looking forward to eating together and the fact that it takes half an hour longer to make savory crepe is not customers problem. 3. If you take customers name while taking the order then you might want to call by that name to avoid confusion otherwise it is pointless to take the name down. By the end of going through above mentioned hurdles I ran out of patience to wait for my food. One star for existing. read more

I can't believe I just discovered this place today. I am always looking for places with good, strong coffee. This place has a very cool vibe. I was also pleasantly surprised by the prices. I got a medium red eye which was fantastic. The size was even bigger than I thought it would be. They had tons of different coffee options. Crabby nasty and rude staff. I can't comment on the food or coffee because before I could order anything the older skinny blond lady started yelling at me something about how this isn't Starbucks and I should have asked her to use her bathroom. Do not give them your business is the advice from us, longtime customers. We routinely have introduced new friends and family members. NOT anymore! Six of us met up there, after dinner, to have coffee, tea, and crepes. We always liked to give business to this establishment because it was privately owned AND because they were open later than the French Bakery on the same street (which also serves European crepes). This time, it was different. The owner was RUDE. We were there still consuming our coffees and desserts (as were several other customers) when a woman, who believe to be the owner, abruptly started cleaning the tables at which we were sitting. WIth rudeness of a hand gesture (as if shoeing flies from her face) she said "We are closed." Admittedly, it was a minute before closing time. We get it. We are reasonable and understand. But that's not the point. The point is she was horribly rude and she GRABBED an unfinished 1/2 glass (already in a to-go cup!!) of iced tea and 1/3 of a crepe out from under one friend and took the the drink of another who was in the bathroom! !!! We were so dumbfounded we didn't react quick enough to stop her and then we collectively thought "to heck with it!" She has outdoor seating in front and back of the store. She couldn't have tried???, "We are closing in a minute, can I get you anything ready to go?" OR "Hi All, would you like to finish your drinks and food outside?" Did I mention that when we arrived at 9:10 PM, she was packed with customers and we were told we would need to wait for our crepes...as they were backed up! We patiently waited for them but in the end we were "dirt under their feet." Total disrespect that I wouldnt do to ANYONE--let alone a paying customer! The quaint, family-owned, European Cafe in West Hartford Center has lost its charm for sure! We will tell everyone we know. Its time to find new places to spend our money and time. Cafes are supposed to be relaxing--NOT stressful at the end of a nice evening. Go elsewhere, please. read more

I love that there are still little independently owned places like this in West Hartford Center, which is increasingly being taken over by the big chains. They take coffee seriously here, and I've heard that the owner has fresh baklava and other pastries delivered daily from New York City. It's a small but cozy environment that seems to encourage hanging out. I got a belgian waffle to go, which was big and delicious, but a bit pricey at over $9. (But hey, it's WeHa Center, so that shouldn't have been a surprise.) read more

Went in to meet a friend for coffee on a Monday afternoon. The inside is slightly cramped, but cozy. Sofia has an great selection of different baked goods and macaroons (!!) that set it apart from some of the other cafes in the area. I had a medium mocha to stay and 2 macaroons- lemon and coconut. The macaroons are delicious, but served on a styrofoam plate. Wish they had non-waste dishes for eat in customers! The mocha was good, but you definitely pay a premium. 2 macaroons and a mocha ran me over $10. read more

The only reason this didn't get one star from me is because the food and coffee is actually very good. Unfortunately the service is not. The two women who work here, I'm assuming they are the owners, are rude every single time I come in here for no reason at all. For awhile I put up with their attitude and just tried to ignore it because I really enjoy this cafe. It's opened late (unlike other cafes around), and it's in a great area. Unfortunately, this will be the last time I give them my business. Multiple other people I've talked to have complained about the same thing. Amazing crepes. Just add Nutella and proceed to drool. Good espresso and coffee options. It's always packed here. I have not had any of the savory options for food choices, or ice cream (lactose intolerant) but it all looks amazing. It's a super small place. You may have a hard time finding a table on a busy day/night but it's worth coming by anyway. read more

Wonderful coffee and ambiance, convenient location, free wifi-- an independent alternative to Starbucks. You can imagine my disappointment, then, when I was ignored by both the barista and woman at the register due to the arrival of two regular customers, who were treated to immediate special service at my expense. I might add that all three of the staff people behind the counter (including a man who seemed like the owner?) were assisting these regulars ahead of me, and not because the customers themselves were pushy or at all demanding. I was overlooked intentionally, without any apology for the neglect or delay. I will think twice before returning here again in the future, and at the time I was furious (though didn't speak up about it). I judge a coffee shop as much by its service and inclusion of newcomers as I do by the quality of its beverages / food / setting, which explains the disappointment and low rating. read more

I was on a crepe kick for a while and this was by far, the best location to get one. They always have fresh fruit, and crepes are cooked perfectly. The espresso is great. The 2 girls running the place are awesome. They even have seating out back for those of you that are worried about how small the place is. read more

Eh, I don't know. The coffee I had was fine and the pastry was ok. The service was, well, disinterested, but that's not too important. I just got a feeling of meh, nothing great or awful about here. Beyond exceeded our expectations. We came in on a whim one day (we were previous regulars of a crepe spot down the street) and asked the server for her recommendation. She created a crepe straight out of heaven for us. My boyfriend described the crepe as one of the best meals he has ever eaten. Additionally the coffee was strong and good. Why would you go to Starbucks when you have a family owned business across the street that serves better coffee?! I've never tried the Crepes here but they look delicious. Cute little coffee shop right on Farmington Ave in West Hartford. They've got a wide selection of coffee and tea (tea is really good). They also serve fantastic crepes, either sweet or savory. Portion size is great as well, very reasonably priced. Can't wait to go back :) read more
