I'm a big fan of this place, so it sucks that I have to write this. Late Saturday afternoon (12/21), my family and I ate at the restaurant. Out of the nine people that ate there, five people got food poisoning symptoms, starting that night--three were affected severely and the other two (including myself) on a smaller scale. This is the only place my family went to during the weekend to eat and the only place where we ate altogether. I Yelped my way here in 'Cafe De Olla,' supporting a Burbank, CA local biz being a local tourist. I was so lucky again that I found free street parking not having to circle around looking for meter parking. I ordered their 'Make Your Own,' omelette and their house brew. I liked both items I ordered, but it was just that the whole place was extremely cramped with so many guests. The bathroom gave out an interesting vibe: it immediately reminded me of any airplane bathroom. It was That cramped. I felt like I was on a plane using the restroom here. That and the waiters were all so nice. Maybe if I showed up on a less busier day.....not sure. The wait time for both items I ordered took a bit longer than I expected, so I guess it was first come first serve. This was a toss up cafe for me, I'm not sure if I'll be back just yet....I like having words to read while waiting for an order though. That was a super cool idea. read more

I definitely would not recommend trying to eat here on the weekend as it's nearly impossible to get a table. The last few times we've tried to go, the wait was over an hour for two people so we left and went somewhere else. Today we wanted to try again so I put my name on the waitlist 1.5 hrs before planning to arrive. We checked in 10 minutes before it said we were planned to be seated. We then waited another 45 minutes and decided to check in with the hostess to see where we were in line. She said that we were still 5th to be seated. 30 minutes later, we were still 5th in line. At that point it had been over an hour since we checked in so we decided to give up and order to go. We finally received our food 30 minutes after that and nearly four hours after we first put our name on the waitlist. Unfortunately, the food was soggy and cold. The whole point was to eat at the restaurant because we wanted fresh food that doesn't transport well. I understand that it's a popular place but realistically, it's only feasible if you plan to order takeout. It seems like they just don't have enough space or a proper system in place to accommodate for the amount of people who want to dine in. I grew up on Cafe De Olla, and my friends, after years of trying to find somewhere in LA that makes decent Cafe de Olla, I finally found the spot! Cafe De Olla delivers in more ways than one. The servers keep the cinnamon-infused coffee coming your way, making sure your ceramic cup never empties and that your sugar high sees you past that 3 p.m. energy slump as you try to stay alert during brunch with a close friend, as so happened with me. Five stars for the coffee and servers alone! As for the food... I love sugary brunch over savory, and I love French Toast over pancakes, but above all, I love peanut butter with every ounce of my being--so of course I went with the Peanut Butter-Banana French Toast. Perfection. That's all I can say. P-E-R-F-E-C-T-I-O-N. Totally worth the drive through LA traffic to get to this hidden gem in Burbank. I took my wife here on a Saturday morning to grab breakfast. I wanted to try this place for a while but never had the chance until now. We came a little after they open so they were not as busy yet. I parked down the street since it's basically street parking here. I checked in with the host and we got seated inside. It's a small place and has only like 10 tables inside so be aware of that because they do get busy. My wife started off with their hot cafe de olla coffee and asking our waiter some questions on their chilaquiles, she went with the chilaquiles divorciados because she was able able to pick the green and red sauce. I got the All In One burrito along with asking for the avocado to be on the side. I was going to order a soda but the price was almost the same as getting a appetizer so I just got water. The staff are very friendly here and attentive to us during our dining experience. Our food took a little while to come out but it was t an issue. My wife beloved her chilaquiles but prefer the red sauce more. I thought my burrito was good as well and it filled me up. I ended up ordering the enchiladas poblanos to go for my mom with white bread and fruits. The best thing here is the coffee has unlimited refill. Burritos are good though, recommend it's more of the waiting in the heat, lack of customer service being welcoming and the physical place being so cramped that took away from the experience. The inside only had 5 tables and 1 large table for a larger party. The outside has another 6 smaller tables which can explain why the wait is pretty long. Food review time: Ordered the Del Antojo which is a bolillo roll topped with beans, chorizo, and cheese. It has a side of poblano chilaquiles, beans, and 2 eggs. The poblano chilaquiles were tasty, I wish they would have a little spice to them but that's also a personal preference. They put a good amount of sauce and chips but I wish they would have been more generous with the queso fresco. The chorizo on the bolillo wasn't the best, it was overly salty so I ended up scraping most of it off and just eating the bolillo with beans. Just a note, they charge $3 per substitution which can add up if you have any allergy, vegetarian, or vegan restrictions. A little unfair for those if you ask me considering your removing something for another thing in place of it. For the portion size, found it to be a little pricey. Is it wrong to feel like If I were of Latin descent the service would've been better? Because that was the feeling this restaurant was giving. We ordered their signature coffees iced and they were absolutely delish. My hubs got the chorizo and I got an omelet both were so yummy. But we never saw our waiter after he put the order in, never checked in or asked how was anything. I waved a bus boy down and asked for more salsa to go with the omelet, and he never came back. I do not recommend going there. The person working at the front desk was extremely rude. We waited 25 minutes for a table because we were expecting two more people to join us; initially, they didn't want to seat us, but they eventually did--only to insist that we place our orders via phone. Shortly after, our waitress came over to ask if we were ready to order, and we explained that we were still waiting for the other two people. Three minutes later, the person from the front desk returned to ask if we were going to order, claiming they had other people waiting for a table. I was shocked; I asked, "How is this possible? We haven't even been inside the restaurant for 10 minutes, yet you want to kick us out just because we haven't ordered and because you have other people waiting?" I became very upset, and my sister asked the waitress for the bill for our drinks. When the waitress asked why, we told her that we had been given an ultimatum: "Order, or leave--we need the table." The waitress actually let us stay, even though it was only 2:10 PM and they don't close until 3:00 PM. It was the worst treatment I have ever received in my life. Stopped by for brunch with some girlfriends on a Thursday, the wait was pretty long despite it being the middle of the week but I don't have a problem waiting for good food and a good experience. It's a small restaurant with few tables inside and a few outside, around 15-18 tables total I think. We waited about 40 minutes. The service was quick and we got our food relatively fast once seated. The portion was excellent and my friends loved their food, my meal was good but I didn't feel it was worth the wait but admittedly, I grew up with authentic Mexican breakfast so I'm pretty picky with my Mexican faire. I don't think I'll be stopping in again but I don't live too close anyway. The coffee de olla was absolutely amazing. No need for any added sugar or cream. Has notes of cinnamon and sweetness from the sugar canes. I've been here only a handful of times because every other times we've tried, the wait times are close to an hour. And personally, I'm not waiting that long. The food that I HAVE had here is good? It's nothing "outta this world" but it's also not mediocre. The coffee though is quite good. Even the cafe de olla is good. Not too sweet or cinnamon-y or bland. I'd say their standout dish is their French Toast and chilaquiles. The location offers indoor and outdoor seating but it's all VERY limited as the place is very small. Hence the long wait times. Outdoor seating is best enjoyed during the Spring, Early Summer or Early Fall. Just bring a jacket and some pants if eating outside I learned the hard way lol.
